A military serviceman will use the slugs to breach followed by suppressive fire which is extremely capable of making people duck with its 30 round mags however I like a .308...but that’s all I’m saying. I would buy both...I do own both haha stay safe y’all!
I freaking love this round..... and thank you for giving us such a detailed review of this round. I love seeing the same round being shot into different targets.
I am well impressed with the brenneke.....I own an Remington 870 12 gauge...I was shooting at 40 yards...my target was an 8 inch thick tree...with my pond being my backing....I fired a simple 2 3/4 inch reminging slug...the slug penetrated about only 2 inches...then I loaded a brenneke black magic 3 inch mag slug...I fired the 3 inch brenneke slug...the slug penetrated the 8 inch tree and hit the water.....I love it!!!

As for slugs, I left the Army 49 years ago. Before I left I worked a deer check station with the MPs in Fort Campbell Ky. Deer hunting with firearms on Federal property was with shotgun slugs only. We processed 186 deer in three days. I remember precisely because the results were, for me anyway, so remarkable. I found four slugs in the deer that were checked in to be removed from Federal property. All four slugs were 20 guage; every 12 guage slug was a complete pass through regardless of the wound placement or size of the deer. The 20 guage slugs were the Forster type as I recall. I do not remember ever seeing a second shot used. Nearly all of the animals just collapsed in their tracks. There were likely some short barreled shotguns used but the only ones I remember seeing were standard 26 or 28" length types such as Remington 1100s or 870s, that sort of thing.
Now that was simply impressive! I am so glad you make these scientific videos to visualize which are effective. I can see home defense in a thin walled home would be a concern of over penetration. Very interesting and well done.

This is the Slug that we Load-up with when hiking in Grizzly Country.Yes, it will kill a big-bear, but keep shooting till the bear goes down and then shot the thing 2 more times!
+GlockMod23 Correct, no gun under a .50 BMG is likely to stop a grizzly in it's tracks, even in .50 BMG I wouldn't want to use a single shot rifle, still no guarantee.
Phill Huddleston I'd like to think that a 30mm depleted uranium shell from an A10 warthog could stop any bear with one good placed shot. That would kinda be a unfair matchup though.
Last year I shot a deer at about 100 yards with one of these and I got a complete pass through and took down a sapling too. the deer didn't even make it 10 yards before he fell.
I have one I recovered that went through the length of a three year old buck. It stopped under the skin just beyond it's heart. Hit by lightning. Ordinary foster slugs are fine. I still prefer Brennekes.
Here in the uk we get the OPALMAGNUM slug, a rifled brenneke slug with a 3" 12ga case that shoots a 1 1/2 oz slug at 1615 fps with a 20" barrel giving it 5184 j/3825 lb ft of energy, 20 lb ft more than the magnum crush that is the most powerful in the USA but that is a sabot slug, the opal is the most powerful 3" slug in the world never mind rifled. Also has more energy over range than magnum crush
Excellent video, it helped me settle on this slug for my poor man's double rifle to be used for camp security in grizz, wolf, mountain lion and Sasquatch country. I can present a formidable defense against apex predators or slip in some birdshot and have partridge, grouse or rabbit for my Dutch oven.
Great informative video as always!. I'd like to see a 12 gauge Hornady Critical Defense 2 3/4 00 Buckshot (8 pellet 1600 FPS) ballistic gel test. I think it would be interesting due to the increased muzzle velocity.
I've been using the brenneke classic magnum slugs in 20ga for deer for 30 years, probably taken an excess of 25 deer with them, they hit harder then any of those fancy smancy sabots, accuracy is more then acceptable on them too. Love brenneke slugs
Nice. My favorite firearm is my 12 gauge. Always has been. Why buy all these different guns for hunting when you have one gun that can do it all? I know others like different things, but I always get close to my target so my shotgun always shines!
+Todd Klekotka It all depends on where you live. On my property the woods are so heavy and hilly a seventy yard shot would be about as long as you will get but some areas are far more open.
Very true. I've always hunted in MI or OH. But now that I live in NE, having a rifle is a must, lol. Its easy to make a 600+ shot out here. Then again the waterfowl and turkey hunting is awesome here, but yes it does matter where you live and what game your hunting.
Shotgun slugs tend to penetrate walls with ease, so there's a chance you might hurt someone in the room behind the treat. If that's not a concern (like if you live on a ranch all by yourself with nothing but fields around and don't mind having to repair your walls) then the slug really is a great option for home defense, but most seem to preffer large to medium sized buckshot. Also buckshot recoils less and isn't as loud, normally. That's what I could think of, I'm sure there's more.
The Breneke creates a larger cavity than the Foster because it is flat in front which pushes flesh in front of it whereas the rounded Foster the flesh isn't held in front of the projectile as it penetrates, but slips through it if that makes any sense.
Thank you tnoutdoors9. Great informative review. Have you done a chrono test on this round? Just curious about the muzzle velocity. Not a round that I'd use in the house for self defense but against big game or bad guys in a vehicle I think that it would be a good round. I'm going to get some of these to feed the Mossberg 590SP with 20" barrel.
I ordered a box of these online a few years ago. I can't remember the website, but that had the muzzle velocity advertised at 3014. I had to see what a 12ga slug faster than a 3006 would do. I kind of figured it was a mistake on their part, but it was worth the money. Awesome slugs.
Frank Napolitano pretty much. It's a no brainer for when you are hunting or need something to put a big animal down. You can also argue that it'd work if you live in a very rural area where you're very far from other inhabitants in a situation where you might need to use this powerful slug. Now the problem with over penetration is that you're pretty much asking for a lot of trouble (both moral and legal) if you use it for HD in a dense or moderately urban environment. You MAY take down a bad guy, but there's a big possibility that the powerful round will go through the bad guy, the wall behind him, and maybe other walls beyond that. Not even to mention if you miss the bad guy, then lord knows where that bullet is going to go. That brings up the big possibility of hitting innocent people, something you're actually trying to prevent in the first place. There's of course another side to the argument that worrying too much and compromising too much to avoid over penetration might end up working against your favor in a situation where you can't afford one, but a good balance and planning + common sense is the best things to take into your consideration for a HD ammo choice.
+Ja C It's not a good choice even in a rural area unless you are the only one who lives in the house.Secondly any energy spent after passing through the person is wasted so you are better off stopping power wise using ammo that barely penetrates. However if you are concerned about bears attacking you this would be great ammo choice.
I run a very similar PMC slug. Brenekke style that looks almost identical to that one. They hit realy hard. 3 inch. 36 gram, 1 1/4 ounce @ 1600 fps. Had them full pass through 230lb wild pig shoulder. Through the plate, both lungs and stopped under the skin on opposite side. Too big for home defence, unless its against a big bear or such lol.
WOW!! I had heard the Brenneke slugs were the type to use for bears or hogs where you look for penetration rather than expansion and this video showed that in spades. I have used foster slugs on deer before and they cause a lot of damage but even on deer they tend to come apart. Anyway, thanks for the great video.
I love these slugs. I used "regular" Winchester foster slugs deer hunting in 2012. Budget reasons and I knew I would be close up anyway... My deer ran about fifty yards. I thought I had missed! With these Brennekes, deer have always stumbled flat on their nose. I had one go lengthwise through a Minnesota buck from the hip, through the heart. It stopped under the hide in the front of the chest. Hardly deformed at all. Boom. Lights out. I'm going back to these next year.
Antimony is what's added to lead to harden the lead for certain uses. The higher percentage of antimony in the lead, the harder it gets. Check out Brenneke "Special Forces" slugs. So hard that these slugs can go through steel engine blocks. At about $20+ per box of five they are expensive.
there is one thing you guys who do slug shooting videos seem to forget . slugs are for hunting big game so you wont stalk wild animal until you are 30 feet , use reasonable distance maybe 50 to hundred yards then your results will be valid.
What you dont take into account are these are european slugs (german). There hunting is done usually by a large group of hunters split in half, with one half waiting and the other half flushing/scaring the game towards them. As such most shots are taken from a very close distance at a running animal with an unscoped shotgun shooting slugs or an unscoped rifle (for dangerous european game such as wild boar). In europe the only game which is really hunted in the american fashion of stalking with a scoped rifle is rarer mountain game such as ibex, bear, and occasionally dear and elk.
These slugs are some of the most powerful you can buy. These aren't designed for hunting big/dangerous game they're made for defense against big/dangerous game (like stopping a charging bear at 25 yards.) If you're going to be hunting dangerous game you need a rifle chambered in an appropriate cartridge (like .375 H&H) slugs are so large that the amount of wind resistance they create just slows them down too fast for them to be good at hunting at range (at 100 yards most slugs will have lost over half of their kinetic energy.)
I hate to say it but I think the low shot compromised the test. Although I don't doubt the massive power of this round, in my experience low/side shots are always a little more dramatic because there is less weight and resistance met on the bullet. Not only that, but the energy is not absorbed by the table but rather bounced back into the block, making an exaggerated wound track as well as giving the "jumping" display off the table as it is shot.
The 590A1 has a much heavier barrel and is purely smoothbore with no choke option. 500 and 590 barrels are different and will not crossover. The 590A1 was designed for the USMC. They dont make a barrel for it longer than 20.5"
For people wondering about the accuracy of these slugs, Brennekes are known to be a very accurate shotgun slug IF your gun likes the load. All guns are like this, so you will have to shoot them at the range and see how they group. But if you have good gun sights and are a half way decent shot, these slugs should group under 2 inches at 50 yards and around 4-6 inches at 100 yards.
You can take the penetrator out of a 50 AP round and put it in a 12 gauge round and it will out perform any factory made slug. The reason to cut the copper jacket away from .50 AP and API rounds is to take off excess wieght and length from the projectile. You can use a 45 sabot as the penetrator is less then 45 caliber and push it out to some high velocity using load data for the projectile wieght. Some companies sale the actaul .50 tracer and AP rounds in a 12 ga round and one company loads a penetrator made of steel which it claims is from a .50 round but it does not match any one I have seen....
At this point, if someone's gonna' shoot at me, I'd still consider myself "medium-game", but a few more slabs of ribs at Corky's should bump my bathroom scale up into the "big-game" category. What a great setup and demonstration! These slugs hit like a Mack truck!
a few years back I decided I would use these slugs for deer hunting ,well I had a decent buck come to about 35 yards from my stand and I hit him hard right in the "boiler room " well he jumped crazy high and ran about 40 yards sideways to me and stopped so he was still 35 yards and I thought I better hit him again just in case ,well I put another in him in the same spot then he ran straight away to about 100 yards where it appeared he went down so I got out of the stand and I looked and he was up and running ,well I knew where he was headed so I ran over there and sure enough he came right by me at 20 yards and I put 3 shots into him ,looked like he went down so over I go and wtf he is up again so I put 2 more into him and down again I through a couple more in the gun and over I go and the SOB is up again !! 2 more @ like 15 yards and finally hes was down for good now that's 9 slugs all at pretty close range ,so I gut him out and there is no damage inside ???? get him home and skinned him and the slugs dropped every where and NOT ONE SLUG penetrated into the deer past the skin so yeah no more brennekes for me ------shot another that year with 1 oz Winchesters and blew half the deer away at 60 yards 1 shot so I saw no reason to look for a different brand!! and that's the gods honest truth I swear to it !!!!
Bullshit. Did u even watch the test? This thing penetrates like crazy. So your telling me these well known bear stoppers wouldn't penetrate a deer? And somehow your shitty Winchester "blew half the deer away." The brenneke black magic is made out of a harder lead and has better ballistics, so it would be impossible for your Winchester to penetrate better. There is no way in hell a slug like a brenneke isn't going to blow thru a deer. And a shotgun slug can't "blow half a deer away." Your so full of shit it isn't even funny. I shot my first buck with a 1 ounce Winchester, and it fragmented and barley reached the vitals, we had to track it almost 400 yds. Next season I used a brenneke green lightning to take 2 deer, both dropped within 30yds and both times the slug penetrated straight thru. I swear to it!! Now you have a real account making your story look silly. Your just a Winchester fanboy and I'm calling you out on it.
well its very unfortunate there are dumb punks like you in the world I gave you a very true account of a hunt I had some years back I dont for a minute think that a brenneke slug wont penetrate a deer you dumb ass im telling you they sure had a quality control issue that day . a brenneke slug is nothing its just another slug it certainly isnt a better slug than any other if you think winchester just isnt able to make a slug as good as brenneke can you just plain stupid and ya know im not even a winchester fan I do have 1 winchester gun -22 auto its a piece of crap cant empty a clip without jamming i hate it about the only reason i even get winchester slugs is because they were cheap at a time when I didnt have much $$$$ and they seem to work just fine and you can get them for 3$ at walmart and i dont want to bother resighting my guns for somthing else that will work just the same on the other hand when i used the brennekes I was looking for a premium slug and the brennekes let me down on that particular day look I dont know wtf happened all I know is I shot at that deer 14 times and when it was all said and done 9 slugs came out of him and most if not all of those shot were inside 50 yards if you choose to not believe me but when you call me a liar and stupid now we have an issue
george lens Srry I was being very rude, I apologize. But none of them going past the skin? that's crap! A brenneke is antimony hardened. The only way your comment would be believable would be if you used a brenneke ko or sabot. I'm srry bud but a bear proven round is going to fail on a deer. What type of brenneke was it?
I've fired a few of those rotweil rounds and they have a nasty kick to them. When the buttstock hits the shoulder leaving you a nice bruise. That's some really cool stuff. Kind of pricy but makes a toy more funner lol!
I use Brenneke slugs for black bear hunting. I haven't got to hit one yet, but I'm pretty sure it will be effective. I LOVE 12 GAUGE POWER!!!!!! I did some tree trimming, just the other day, with my 12 gauge. Good times...
I've used Brenneke Gold and 3" Brennekes. They're about the same as this. The plastic wad which travels with and stabilizes the slug is included in the slug weight figure. The flat nose and plastic wad are very unaerodynamic. It whistles through the air like a badminton birdie and doesn't have much penetration at 100 yds. I hit a medium sized 8 pt at 100 yds and it didn't enter the rib cage. It made a foot long tunnel under the hide and exited straight up vertically. Ridiculous. But at 50 yds it makes a wound so nasty I could always see the red spot in the scope.
I'm all for one-shot stopping power, but for self-defense, that Brenneke 12 gauge slug is like using a 16 pound sledge hammer to drive finishing nails. It'll get the job done, but GEEZ!
The Brenneke is reputedly the premier bear defense slug in Alaska and such places. The weight and lack of expansion should give it excellent bone breaking power, which is just what you need. Love the humor too

I think you should try testing the clear ballistics gel
Excellent video TN, those slugs are freaking hard! I was very surprised how little deformation there was in the pine board test.
Phill Huddleston There is a video here on youtube of a guy dropping a big Alaskan brown bear in his tracks with his Smith & Wesson 460XVR revolver.
Chris Strobel We are talking about 100% guarantee of dropping a bear every single time. Nothing short of a 40 mm grenade will do that.
Phill Huddleston I'd like to think that a 30mm depleted uranium shell from an A10 warthog could stop any bear with one good placed shot. That would kinda be a unfair matchup though.
For good measure hunt with a friend.Backup fire.
I took a large buck earlier this year with one of these and WOW..first deer iv ever put down in his tracks...didn't move 5'...unbelievable cavity
You were using the black magic?
Last year I shot a deer at about 100 yards with one of these and I got a complete pass through and took down a sapling too. the deer didn't even make it 10 yards before he fell.
I have one I recovered that went through the length of a three year old buck. It stopped under the skin just beyond it's heart. Hit by lightning. Ordinary foster slugs are fine. I still prefer Brennekes.
Get some!
I live in a state that does not allow standard rifle calibers, 30-06, 308 ect. this slug seems perfect for deer out here.
@@silvirhunter3607 live in iowa do ya?
@@abrahamcerda76 Minnesota is the same way, too.
***** yes, especially in a light shotgun...
These are the Shells I keep in my shotgun, great to finally see them get to poke through some media!
+Todd Klekotka I wish I could rifle hunt. your neighbor in Iowa.
Silvirbullet what? Iowa does not allow rifles for hunting?
+Todd Klekotka sadly no. they claim it's too open for full power rifles. so we're stuck with slugs for deer. can't even use buckshot.
I really appreciate all that you've done. It is helped me make some educated decisions about EDC and also educated the public. Thank you very much.
5:07 - 5:14 That death scene had more drama and realism than anything Mr and Mrs Will Smith have yet managed to achieve in their acting careers.
Thanks again for another great video! How does the recoil compare to other slugs?
The Breneke creates a larger cavity than the Foster because it is flat in front which pushes flesh in front of it whereas the rounded Foster the flesh isn't held in front of the projectile as it penetrates, but slips through it if that makes any sense.
"...freaking air torpedoes for your shotgun."
LMAO Love it.
Nice to see something fully penetrate the block. Thanks for the vid.
Can’t find em anywhere
GREAT review! Very informative! Thanks for all your hard work putting this review together!
A Bear's, Dogman's or Bigfoot's WORST Nightmare...
I understand. Thank you for taking the time to get back to me
oookaaay... so I'm gonna seriously fortify my fences. My 20 inch sandbags are a little thin....#sigh#
:)
I ordered a box of these online a few years ago. I can't remember the website, but that had the muzzle velocity advertised at 3014. I had to see what a 12ga slug faster than a 3006 would do. I kind of figured it was a mistake on their part, but it was worth the money. Awesome slugs.
This looks like a good load to me, especially for home defense . . . especially for those gunners with poor marksmanship and thin walls.
James Maxwell 😂
Good advice, right, Chris?
😂
This slug is what I keep in a remington 870 police magnum s,ooth bore as defense in bear country.
If the Brenneke has more stopping power than a Foster slug, why not use it for home defense ? Is over penetration the issue ?
Did ya watch the video?
+Phill Huddleston Correction , when I said "barely penetrates" I meant exiting through the person or animal.
Thanks for another excellent video. I find yours to be the most informative and comprehensive of their type.
Are you using a steak thermometer to point at the Ballistics Gel cavity? Lol
luis cuellar YES
***** haha nice man.
***** how much was a 5 pack of those?
I run a very similar PMC slug. Brenekke style that looks almost identical to that one.
They hit realy hard.
3 inch. 36 gram, 1 1/4 ounce @ 1600 fps.
Had them full pass through 230lb wild pig shoulder. Through the plate, both lungs and stopped under the skin on opposite side.
Too big for home defence, unless its against a big bear or such lol.
but TN, a shotgun can't be more powerful than an Assault Weapon in 5.56 :|
WOW!! I had heard the Brenneke slugs were the type to use for bears or hogs where you look for penetration rather than expansion and this video showed that in spades. I have used foster slugs on deer before and they cause a lot of damage but even on deer they tend to come apart. Anyway, thanks for the great video.
hey make a 9mm penetration test with FMJ ammo please !
Do you use the black magic?
Antimony is what's added to lead to harden the lead for certain uses. The higher percentage of antimony in the lead, the harder it gets. Check out Brenneke "Special Forces" slugs. So hard that these slugs can go through steel engine blocks. At about $20+ per box of five they are expensive.
i wonder what a phesant would look like what hit with that
If a pheasant was hit with that you would be like what pheasant
totally agree
Red Mist.
Great vid. I would love to see the same video with the Brenneke "Special Forces Maximum Barrier Penetration" slug. I'd imagine others would as well.
there is one thing you guys who do slug shooting videos seem to forget . slugs are for hunting big game so you wont stalk wild animal until you are 30 feet , use reasonable distance maybe 50 to hundred yards then your results will be valid.
Florin Giuvara so whats your point? German slugs are weak, the shooter has to be close to a target?
These slugs are some of the most powerful you can buy. These aren't designed for hunting big/dangerous game they're made for defense against big/dangerous game (like stopping a charging bear at 25 yards.) If you're going to be hunting dangerous game you need a rifle chambered in an appropriate cartridge (like .375 H&H) slugs are so large that the amount of wind resistance they create just slows them down too fast for them to be good at hunting at range (at 100 yards most slugs will have lost over half of their kinetic energy.)
Very well said.
Damn, bakani! He told you!!!!!
Well I know what I'm taking with me when I go hunting and run into a dog man or run into a Bigfoot
The 590A1 has a much heavier barrel and is purely smoothbore with no choke option. 500 and 590 barrels are different and will not crossover. The 590A1 was designed for the USMC. They dont make a barrel for it longer than 20.5"
3:39 giggity
Got to visit Outpost Armory 2 weeks ago on a trip to the Boro. First time I've ever seen 8 Barrett rifles at once. Nice gun store.
I know the squatch tried to kill me. It will pay.
Been waiting for this test for a while! Thanks, dude!
Greeting, taofledermaus send me :)
+boedhaspeaks I seen this before but I needed a refresher :P
+boedhaspeaks Same. I think I'll like it here!
Powerful slug. As always, great video and test.
That block was twerkin.
For people wondering about the accuracy of these slugs, Brennekes are known to
be a very accurate shotgun slug IF your gun likes the load. All guns are like this,
so you will have to shoot them at the range and see how they group. But if you
have good gun sights and are a half way decent shot, these slugs should group
under 2 inches at 50 yards and around 4-6 inches at 100 yards.
"Freaking Air-torpedo", LMAO.
Fucking hell!
Seriously people this has to be one of the dumbest stories I've ever heard. It has bullshit written all over it.
the bomb
agree with you the first deer i shot was with a 20 gauge and it went threw a shoulder and the spine out the other side .
well its very unfortunate there are dumb punks like you in the world I gave you a very true account of a hunt I had some years back I dont for a minute think that a brenneke slug wont penetrate a deer you dumb ass im telling you they sure had a quality control issue that day . a brenneke slug is nothing its just another slug it certainly isnt a better slug than any other if you think winchester just isnt able to make a slug as good as brenneke can you just plain stupid and ya know im not even a winchester fan I do have 1 winchester gun -22 auto its a piece of crap cant empty a clip without jamming i hate it about the only reason i even get winchester slugs is because they were cheap at a time when I didnt have much $$$$ and they seem to work just fine and you can get them for 3$ at walmart and i dont want to bother resighting my guns for somthing else that will work just the same on the other hand when i used the brennekes I was looking for a premium slug and the brennekes let me down on that particular day look I dont know wtf happened all I know is I shot at that deer 14 times and when it was all said and done 9 slugs came out of him and most if not all of those shot were inside 50 yards if you choose to not believe me but when you call me a liar and stupid now we have an issue
george lens Srry I was being very rude, I apologize. But none of them going past the skin? that's crap! A brenneke is antimony hardened. The only way your comment would be believable would be if you used a brenneke ko or sabot. I'm srry bud but a bear proven round is going to fail on a deer. What type of brenneke was it?
Thats gotta be the highest "high brass" I've ever seen! Man, I bet that thing POPS!
Dang these things are insane!
