I like his humorous honestly.
Years ago when i was still in LE (10-man local PD in NorCal), i tested Flite Cintrol, Hornady TAP, and the standard Winchester 00 that we were carrying, in my personal 20" 870 with an IC choke tube and a dept 870 with open choke. 2 of the 3 ammo types were at my own expense. Long story short, Flite Control is excellent stuff. It extended the usable range of buckshot to 25 and possibly 30 yards. Out of open bored shotguns, the Winchester stuff was already getting dicey at 15 yds. In my IC choke, it was ok at 15 yds and getting marginal past 20. The TAP was good too, but not as stark as the Flite Control. I already knew that my IC choke tube gave pretty good patterns and very good slug accuracy (rifle sights on my barrel). So we switched to Flite Control right away. For a few years, the mandated load had been 1 slug and 3 buck, also at my suggestion, which i had been doing for many years. We had extras of each type readily available. Slugs generally do not overpenetrate as much as many people believe, and usually break into 3 large pieces, which also helps. The low recoil reduced velocity slugs actually tend to penetrate more due to less expansion. So test your slugs carefully. Anyway, that is my 2 cents. I agree that plated shot often throws better patterns. It is harder and thus stays rounder and does not deform as much upon firing. My house load is #4 buck due to my living situation. When i have more space, i will likely switch back to 00, or very probably #1. STAY SAFE!
Makes sense to have slugs stowed if all you have is a shotgun and no rifle but slugs are a bad defense option compared to keeping a type of buckshot loaded in the tube

Years ago the US Army developed a formula to describe how buckshot compared with a single projectile. They determined that when a highly developed mammal is struck simultaneously with multiple projectiles that it’s nervous system reacts as though it was hit with the square of the number of pellets. That answers the question I had about why small game hit with a few little pellets reacted as opposed to a rifle cartridge with a single higher energy projectile.

How can there be discussion of patterning without discussion of chokes?
WOW, Chris, this was (another) greatly instructive and superbly executed video. MANY THANKS to you and to Lucky Gunner!
I’ve used shotguns for more than 50 years, so I was aware of almost everything you stated, BUT - and this is a major “but” - your presentation was so coherent, concise, articulate, and sequentially-logical that it made reviewing all this information simple and straightforward (I’m certain it would be absolutely ideal for less experienced shotgunners).
I also laud your comments - which I trust will be further emphasized in Part #2 - concerning pattern size. I can’t tell you I how many times I’ve had to explain (and often re-explain) to new shooters that a shotgun’s purpose is NOT to have a huge pattern, so even inaccurate shots will score a hit or two on a criminal-sized target. This is a prevailing - but very dangerous - myth (as you know better than I).
Thanks, again, and I greatly look forward to Part #2.

I have a 20 gauge Mossberg shotgun so I hope this will apply. Doc said the shoulder won't handle 12 gauge any more.
#3 Buckshot in 20 gauge is equivalent to a 12 gauge #4 Buckshot loading. The 12 gauge gives you 27 pellets while the larger pellet (#3) of the 20 gauge still gives you 20 pellets in the standard length hull.
When it comes to Shotguns you typically dont want to be on the receiving end no matter the gauge
It's just as powerful as the 12 only difference is the slug and pellet sizes
🖐 #4 buck over here in my shotgun. If I was using it in an LEO capacity I'd probably go with full power 00 flight control. But I don't need the added range or barrier penetration that comes with that in my home or around it, which is a standard city sized lot with houses all around.
I also have my home defense shotguns loaded with #4 buckshot for the same reasons you noted. I don't need the added range or penetration with #00 buckshot for in the home self defense shooting.
My thoughts exactly
Thinking the same, but want to know more about #1 success vs #4.
00 Flight Control looks too tight and not designed to achieve the goal of higher hit probabilty.
JK 241 depends on the max distance of your encounters and the patterns of your shotgun. My max range in my home is 10 yards. And I know how my 18” 870 will pattern so I choose #1.its very dependent on your home and mission. A side saddle with a different load and training for a swap out could be the thing for you. The best part about a shotgun is it’s flexibility.

I remember your last video about shotgun shells because I have a shotgun, and years ago, you made one of the simplest yet informative videos about shotgun loads.

Reference patterning, one of our officers had a 14" barrel, modified choke entry gun that would reliably place all eight 00 pellets from the Federal Flight Control low recoil load in a 6" group at 40 yards. Had I not seen it myself, I would not have believed it.
Holy shit!
We found a that choke actually briefly grabbed or deformed the shot cup on flight control causing larger groups.
Hell yeah, just did a form 1 on an 870, bought a 14" Remington, bead sight, barrel with a fixed modified choke. That tight group is no exaggeration, does as well with the Hornady Versatite wad. It also hits point of aim with slugs at 30 yards
I have a 590A1 SBS (14” barrel) and I can confirm this. I didn’t believe it until I tried it myself.
@Bo Zo There's so many other loads, not all buckshot stays that tight. My 14" 870, using Federal #4 Buck has an 8" spread at 7 paces, the distance in my living room.
Outdoors I may want the Flight Control Wad, so I keep all pellets on target out to a known distance.
Chris, You're terrific... authoritative... and so appreciated!!! Jack
I use something kinda unconventional for home defense shotguns it sounds unusual but I use frangible breaching slugs. I’ve tested them pretty extensively they average 10-12 inches of penetration in ballistic gel they will punch through 4 layers of denim beef ribs and still disintegrate a pork roast without putting a hole in the plywood behind it. I haven’t shot drywall with them yet but but I have shot plywood spaced 4 inches they go through the first one like a slug punch a fist size hole in the second and almost nothing in the third. A 2x4 will snap in half but the plywood behind is fine. In my opinion based on my own test they are more than capable of stopping any threat that may be in your home with the least risk of over penetrate or collateral damage. so far the only down side I have really seen is they are expensive.
Frangible rounds were sold as Glaser safety slugs in a variety of calibers all throughout the 90s four exactly these reasons and proved fairly effective even in pistol calibers. In the smaller calibers they could result in under penetration but in a shotgun sized round, well let's just say Glaser got the idea from somewhere.
Honestly, I'd do the same but i haven't seen a place with those at a reasonable price and i question whether or not i could find a cheaper slug with similar ballistics and point of impact so i could get some proper training in with them.
the fact that you've tested your theory under likely conditions you'll face at home is so awesome. keep up the gun science my dude and I hope you never have to test the effectiveness of your setup in real life.
@Hohokam Footprints
They're tiny fragments, the point is that they're supposed to be small enough to not be able to cause significant injuries to anything other than eyes and they do nasty things if the slug hits flesh. They also can't get fouled by clothing like some hollow points. They ended up not having enough mass to be reliable though and fell out of favor. A breeching round does sound like it should be an excellent idea though. I'd like to know how much they're selling for these days.
I have some of those too, I don’t keep them loaded but I have some and they are good slugs. I do keep a couple slugs in my side saddle just Incase I need to take out the radiator on a get a way car or something lol
Might want to be wary of possible legal ramifications in certain jurisdictions ie the same ones that ban the use of expanding projectiles. Just a thought.
#4 Buck is perfectly acceptable for most home self defense.

I love how at the beginning of the video you gave a quick recommendation of a good honey defense type of buck shot! That was very thoughtful
I thoroughly agree with you on the importance of a tight pattern and, for that same reason, I agree with you top choice of ammo.
I was the handgun/shotgun instructor for my old agency. We tried out the Flite-Control wad buckshot and I LOVED it! I shot it in Rem870s both 14" modified choke barrels and 20" Improved Cylinder barrels, as well as a few other models, and never failed to be impressed. If you'll pardon and indulge an old story, I was, days prior to my retirement, running a qualification course for a night shift squad. One crusty shift sgt, after arguing with me about even having to qualify with a shotgun he hated and "never would use anyway," dug his issued 20" 870 from his trunk and stomped up to the 50 yard line. I told him this was the slug portion of the shoot (5 shots total, 1@50y, 2@40y, 2@25y). He said he was loaded with slug. So he fired as I instructed, and I saw no big holes in his silhouette target. Looking closer, though .. hmm.. I called everyone to wait and went down range. He had, as I suspected, left his gun loaded with Federal "Tactical" 00B, with Flite-Control wads. ONE pellet was not in the scoring section of the target. ONE! It was a body hit, mind you, just not in the scored section. All the other pellets were in the scored area. Remember, 50 yards, 40 yards, and 25 yards!
Up 'til then I mostly used slugs (especially Federal "low-recoil" slugs as my then issued 14" 870 and my own 18" S&W 3000 liked them). I began stocking up on that Flite-Control wad 00b from then on.
Thanks, this really is an excellent post, with valuable information, and I appreciate it.

Good food for thought here. I've always considered bird shot (7 1/2) to be a good load for home defense in my home. Max distance being maybe 10 to 12 paces. My primary concern has always been over penetration or errant projectiles. Never having shot any ballistic jell, my observations with bird shot on the range, at various targets (milk jugs with water, old doors, etc...) made me comfortable with bird shot at close range. This video might at least make me buy some more ammo... Oh...BTW all those previously mentioned targets were collected and carted off. People, please stop leaving your junk where the rest of us shoot! Thank you to those responsible enough to leave the site cleaner than when you arrived.
Use buckshot
Birdshot - especially the tiny target shot like #7 1/2 - is terrible at penetrating. Pellets that tiny have very little mass compared to their surface area. It's called "bird"shot for a reason; don't count on it to reliably stop a large creature.

"so... don't miss." Indeed. :-)
Michael Ogden, unless you get your self defense advice from Joe Biden... just fire a few rounds wildly in the air!
Looks sadly at 16 guage in safe
Agreed on no love for 16. My wife's Dad pulled an ass-h0le move and had her shoot a 12 at too young an age so she's a bit afraid of it (but would if SHTF) however a 16 or 20 would probably suit her better or assauge her fears of the 12.
@@RustyOpel the 16 really is a great round. Even the buckshot loadings ( if you can find them) aren't bad on recoil. I have a semi auto and you can keep it on target much more easily
Love my 16's
Just hard to find ammo.
@@nativestone1577 if your in new England kittery trading Post has a selection of in stock 16 guage. It's a miracle, even slugs !
Hey she will still fight for you faithfully
The mini shell are for more firepower/more shells in shotguns with tubes.
The Mossberg 12 ga. need an adapter to feed the mini shells to function reliably.
One of these devices are sold by OPSol Mini-Clip & cost about $20 USD.
Liked for the "My kid is gonna need braces soon" comment
Excellent information about the counter - intuitive nature of tight versus wide patterns. Thank you so much for all your great, down to the point, information about ammunition selection and decisions to be made.
00 fiocchi low recoil loaded in my bedside boomstick.
Same. I've been happy with the results.
That stuff has patterned terribly in every shotgun I've tried it in.
The round patterns great at 12 yards in my Mossberg 590 Shockwave used for home defense.
I like my S&B 9 pellets of 00 buck why hell it's for close quarters anyway 10 yards or less !!
Simple and barebones, yet educational and explanatory.
Spoken with basic English with very little jargon and near crystal clear clarity and open honesty.
That’s the traits of a high quality piece of work.
My dad worked for WINCHESTER in the 60s in Geelong Australia, he did alot of overtime to help make buckshot rounds for the USA army, who wanted a million rounds a week for Vietnam 🇻🇳!!😮, cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 😊
So, back in March 2020, I tried to buy a case of Federal 00 buck. Welp, the market was COMPLETELY dry except for this very weird 12 pellet 00 buck from some random Italian company. Literally just this afternoon I cracked open two boxes and gave these Italians a whirl. Let me first say........I'm an avid, avid, avid shooter, love hunting, love sport shooting...etc. I have shot probably thousands of shotgun shells of all different flavors under my belt.
I go to load the shells into my 590 (which is an 8 round magazine).....I'm beyond puzzled when I can only load 7 of these supposed 2 3/4 shells into my tube! lol. I scratch my head, and shrug it off. I let loose the first blast and I'm stunned by the recoil. I mean......absolutely STUNNED. These things slap harder than a donkey on crack. Harder than 3 INCH magnum shells. I honestly don't get it. They are LABLED 2 3/4 but do NOT load the same into my tube and then I compared them to some Winchester XX 00 buck I had laying around which load 8 into my tube and there seems to be ZERO height difference. lol What the hell!
Another excellent video Chris ! Interesting, informative, and I admire and applaud your efforts to present facts that are as accurate as possible (to the best of your knowledge). I've been sport shooting (handgun/shotgun) for almost 40 years, and I do NOT in any way claim to be an expert, but I've picked up a few things along the way. I have a LOT of respect for the individual who says, " I'm not really sure about that, I'll have to look into it". Thank You and keep up the great work.
I've done lots of gun stuff, but I'm new to shotguns. Thank you so much for the comprehensive video!
Great video 👍 My first fire arm is a Mossberg Mavirick 88 I bought in 94. Have always loved the buckshot round and used for practice. OO buckshot is my round of choice before I even know it was a defensive round.
Idk how 00 buck is a go to round, an evidence based approach would lead to #1 buckshot. Penetration, number of projectiles, over penetration, and getting hits at distance #1 buck is far superior. Just type in 00 vs #1 buck into a search engine. It’s like he is he is comparing the cheapest steel cased plinking rounds and saying they are much better at home defense then a +P JHP defense round.
"3" shells are for larger animals." Well, there are plenty of dangerous and wild animals that were released into the wild in the past year. 3" shells it is.
I like 7 1/2 lead shot to prevent over penetration, don't want to kill anyone in another room. It Should do just fine against an intruder. Everyone has an opinion about what's the best home defense load, honestly shoot whatever you want and just make sure it's reliable. That's my opinion.
It will do the job up close for sure 👌
Agreed. 8 shot to 4 shot leave devastating wounds at 0 to 20 feet. Harry Whittington was 30-40 YARDS away from Dick Cheney when he was grazed by a 28 gauge with birdshot and it still almost killed him. The wound itself wasn't terrible but the tiny birdshot entered his circulatory system and started clogging some arteries.
@@HockeyGoon939 I got lucky and found a couple of boxes of high brass #6 for my 20 gauge. I think it would do fine 🙂
Bird shot would do fine close up. For home defense purposes, I would recommend #2 shot, or something from #2 to #6 shot over #7 1/2 (but load what you can get). I would also recommend looking at #1 or #4 buck shot over #00 if you can find it.
@@gunsandpolitics5510 I shoot a 20 gauge so its no problem # 4 buck is pretty mean
I’d feel a little bad for the intruder because all I have is 45.70 and that will cripple a bear or moose so what would it do to a intruder 🤔
I actually do have another gun but it’s just a M1 carbine but if there’s a intruder I want something with some oomph
45-70 would turn a man's mid section into spaghetti.
alan wake my M1 is capable for it but I just wanna get a message across to the thief about breaking an entering and what happens when someone breaks into my house
It would remove the intruder.
45-70 shot at the midsection will fold a man in half like closing a Motorola Razor and send him 10 yards back in the direction from where he came! All the while removing his spinal section like the Predator.
@@SPCWELLS7 They say no small arms can actually blow someone backwards.
But come on, the 45-70 HAS to change the guy's vector at least a LITTLE.
This video is so concise and informative, I love it.
I load my pump shotgun with #000 MAGNUM…. It’s kind of like sleeping with a loaded canon next to me.

ah man, I was hoping part 2 would be pinned at the top of the comments, that would have been helpful
Well here's me doing my part 🤣 part2:: ruclips.net/video/Jf4i8gRTsJs/видео.html
If we’re talking 10 yards or less I’ll take 7.5 birdshot. I’d hate to take a face full or even a gut shot of birdshot at typical home distance which will definitely take out the eyes and cause massive bleeding due to hundreds of pellet wounds. The bonus is they won’t hit your family member three walls away.
I have this stuff and I love it. At 50 yards it kept a pattern of about 3’ with no flyers.
I also tested some Federal 000 buck without flight control. At 50 yards it held a 4’ pattern with 2 flyers each time. The flyers were outside the main pattern by less than 1’ each time.
Thanks for the information, Chris. I always find your videos helpful or at least interesting. Your detailed review of the P365XL was a big part of my decision to purchase one. (I'd still love to see an aftermarket replacement for the manual safety switch.)
Outstanding, can't wait for part 2.
Here's all you need to know about buckshot. You'll most likely only use it (long gun) in home defense mode as its difficult to conceal carry a full on sized shotgun. In this role as home protector just have some buckshot and your fine, period. At home defense ranges it doesn't matter what brand of buckshot or if you use plated buckshot at these close distances. Get the cheapest buckshot you prefer that reliably runs thru your shotgun and your gtg. You dont need fancy boutique loads. Just position the kids beds where they're out of the flight path and family is out of the way and it solves much of the issues.
I have the fancy tactical buckshot I got on a sale but typically I buy the cheap stuff like the lead ball Rio brand. For goodness sake its just #00 buckshot and is a short range to immediate range proposition mostly 5-10 yds is the most likely distances in legit defense situations. Let's not overtime this.
I like the Nobel Sport Italia LE 12GA. One .650" lead ball followed by six #1 Buckshot pellets.
"May even be a vegetarian". It made me crack so hard I farted 😂
I farted too! And I'm a vegetarian!!
You're recommendation is for outdoor use. For indoors with a shotgun, you want to use plated number 4 buckshot. spreads more, doesn't overpenetrate, devestates flesh, 27-41 24 caliber pellets. 00 Buck loads tend to group very tightly at close range. They'll only make a 3 inch hole at 10m with just about any 00 load. With that kind of "precision" you might as well be using a PCC or a Rifle. Number 4 Buck will not penetrate more than 1 layer of drywall. Penetrating beyond 10 to 12 inches is plenty when you have between 30 and 40 wound channels in the target. The more pellet, the more tissue damage. Stopping power is no myth. a magnum number 4 load is the equivalent of about 45 people shooting one person with a 22 pistol at once.
I was a little disappointed there was no clip of #4 Buck going into ballistic gel.
#4 lead buck will penetrate many layers of drywall. Six sheets -- 3 walls -- according to one test.
Finally someone who actually knows what hes talking about. Thank you for the sanity!
I just posted the same before i read your better comments!
“Evidence based...” Thank you.
#4 buck has twice THE PELLETS. 22caliber INSTEAD OF. 32 cal.
What kind of defence loads can I get for a 2 bore?
We gots really big criminals where I live. Can I get Glasser safety slugs for it? Maybe a Claymore would be a saver bet? 🤪
