In this video, we collect data and test the Federal Punch up against the classic CCI Stinger in Clear Ballistics gel. Punch is touted as a fantastic new round to make 22LR a more viable personal defense option, especially in short barrels. Stingers are the classic super high-velocity, pack-a-wallop rimfire round that can take care of varmints and other critters with ease.

I was a victim of an attempted car jacking and defended myself with a Walter P22 with 10 rounds of Federal Punch. All I can say is it did what it was supposed to do. I’m alive to type this comment the other guys…not so much. Unfortunately. I’m sold on the Federal Punch. It saved my life.
This fake message was Brought to you by the makers of this product 😂😂😂
And then you woke up and had a rough time urinating.
Did the police take your fire arm during the investigation?
These detractors should come with me to the range. My Beretta M9 provided a very tight group 15 round group at 5 yards. Imagine how those
15, or in your case, 10 rounds would stack up at car window distance.
Like the 45 versus 9mm, the 22 versus 9mm, has less recoil meaning back on target immediately. My little old granny wife has the M9 at her desk for home defense. I’m betting her life on it. And if 15 rounds aren’t enough, she’s got 2 more mags to send your way. FYI, she’s a shoot til you go down, not an empty the msg kind of shooter.
Respect ✊🏼
Good testing. They are both good hot rounds. 👍
Definitely got to get Federal credit for the punch, every video I see, it looks impressive.
I like the velocitor better than the stinger. More accurate and hits like a gold dot.
AH HELL YEA!!! I'm on some kind of remfire kick and in the past month have gained 22wmr/mag and several fun guns.
Suppressed 22cb short is so quiet that the action of that revolver seems very loud. Yes, I said revolver, no, I'm not showing it off. With lower calibers, it's easy to cage cylinder gap gasses and force them esleware, preferably through a suppressor. The Downside is your revolver gets a little more dirty, especially in places it never did.
Very interesting Eric, funny I caught this video on a break at home been working on my property have a Ruger Wrangler loaded with the CCI stingers., So I had to watch this immediately LoL might have to pick up some of the Punch ammo looks like pretty good stuff also.
The .22 LR cartridge has been around for literally generations and over 100+ yrs.
It's taken an unbelievably huge list of critters in No. America, especially during the Great Depression, where millions of people were kept fed due to young eagle-eyed kids (younger than draft age) who would scrape up enough ca$h to buy a box of cartridges and proceed to stalk virtually ANYTHING that could pass for a meal for the family. My dad did.
Within the past few years i have managed to pick up some Speer Gold Dots (of all things!) and yet have not seen any tests or reviews.
Is there any possibility there could be a review on these in the near future?
The CCI SGB is also a flat nose solid but it's heavier than the Punch. Is there any chance you might do a comparison of these two rounds using these same guns?
Cci stingers are definitely my go to medium sized varmint round
What about Velocitor?
I never understood the under consideration of a .22lr. It seems to me that it has to be worse than any insect sting and the American 180, the drum fed full auto .22lr was basically a Lead Laser.
Thanks!
Great video
Model 41 with a 7 inch barrel
More people are carrying 22LR handguns. These are useful videos. Please post more 22 LR ammo comparisons.
Punch for 2 legged animals. Stinger for 4 legged animals.
Nice presentation that shows .22 is useful if you use proper ammo.
Thanks for sharing.
Would have never guessed the .22 would still be an evolving round.
Duh
Growing up, my buddies dad had a really good friend that worked at cci. He had a 5 gallon bucket of stingers at all times. I can't tell you how many small furry/feathered/scaly things we killed with stingers. Coyotes to fish. Badgers, gophers, rats at the dump. That is a great round.
It`s been a - while , good to see you back . great video coverage , I liked the Punch performance today , both are great .
I carry an airlite 357, because i like the size, lack of weight, especially compared to a large amount of energy delivery. That said, .22 shaming is a gun snob activity, based in zero facts and science. 22s are kick ass for what they are, which is micro, lightweight, extremely concealable, and extremely affordable.
Well Said
I have many boxes of first year manufacture Stingers from 1975. I still have 9 boxes left from what I found in a 30 cal can I put away decades ago and forgot about. Every year I shoot 20 rounds from what is left to see if they are still reliable. So far 100% ignition and full performance compared to recent production Stingers. Because of that, for long term storage I stick with Stingers for the proven longer than usual shelf life for .22LR. I also have a few boxes of Sears .22LR ammo my Dad bought in 1980 give or take a year. Few of them fire and if you pull the bullet, the powder literally looks and feels like grease. That Sears ammo is a good example for what I usually expect from 45+ year old .22LR ammo. Just thought y'all would find that interesting.
tenho ainda 14 Stinger . 22 de quase 30 anos, uso na Beretta M21 pra viagem . . .nunca mascaram !
I still have 14 Stinger bullets. 22 of almost 30 years, I use it on the Beretta M21 for travel. . .never failed!
Thank you for this half a lifetime of info that I don't have the years left to test! God bless!!!🎉
Dominion .22 is perfectly reliable over 50 years
The Stinger has always been considered the gold standard in .22 LR “defensive” ammunition. Looks like that title might go to the Punch. Good to see the .22 evolving over the years. Truly a fun cartridge to shoot, and can be very deadly.
You should try the CCI Copper 22 it is awesome and very accurate out to 75 yards
Both are definitely good 22lr rounds. I carry a Ruger SR22 with cci segmented hollow points and feel confident carrying this in the hot AZ summers. Beyond Seclusion on YT did a video on the cci segmented hollow points and the results were really impressive.
Even 36 gr. round point will do the trick. Shot placement is everything. That said, if I carried .22LR for self defense I'd be loading one of the two cartridges showcased in this vid. Every little bit helps.
@@BillB23I’m of the opinion at this point that MANY of these .22 rounds provide excellent defensive protection. 40 gr Minimags target rounds for penetration, Aguila also makes several reliable rounds. Inside my house I wouldn’t want the blast of a .223 probably, but I might end up there in shtf despite myself. .22 is extremely accurate and, after seeing so many of these videos, I think it works just fine.
The punch was designed and tested to be fired from a 2 inch barrel 22plinkster has a good video explaining this hot round now I want a RugerLCP 22Lr
On small game, the impact of a CCI Stinger is legendary. It almost turns a standard .22 into a .22 mag. We got a permit to remove some large nuisance birds that were leaving a mess on playgrounds. We used pellet rifles, and subsonic .22 all the way up to Stingers. There was no comparison to the "crumpling affect" of 1600 fps.
Stinger is the best from a rifle hands down but punch is best from a pistol.
A 380 performance video and a 22lr performance video in one day. Thank you Thumb and 8888.
Love 380 for carry
Wow! Federal knocks it out of the park again! That punch seems so well engineered, as do all their self defense rounds. I carry HSTs.
I to! Punch in my SR22 and HST in my p365. I almost never carry my P365. Great firearm. I just never practice with it so I don't carry it.
@@kevinroberts781I'm thinking of buying a p365 to replace my ruger lcp max.
As with any defensive ammo, make sure your ammo of choice will function and shoot reliably in YOUR gun! This is doubly true for 22LR since they are often not the most reliable when it comes to feeding. I can't find any information about the Punch ammo, but Stingers have a longer than normal case and OAL. It probably won't matter for most 'defensive' guns, but I have seen warnings for some guns with match-style chambers to NOT use Stingers because of the case length.
Same case length, same company now, they likely borrowed the design from the stinger.
I kept a 10/22 with a bx25 magazine, flashlight and stingers in the corner for my girlfriend when I worked 3rd shift. We sleep upstairs so if someone ever made it through 2 locked doors hopefully they'd make enough noise for her wake up, get behind the book case and aim that thing at the fatal funnel aka long hallway at the top of the stairs. She's shot it enough to know how to clear dud rounds or malfunctions in the dark.
I can remember using CCI SGB ammo for squirrel hunting. It’s an all lead flat nose round. It made a crazy noise THWAP when it hit its target.
You got it. I’ve got my share of the round too. Good stuff!
Great comparison and I find the results pretty amazing. I never would have imagined that out of a pistol the Federal punch would have a better wound channel than a stinger! Great video with good practical information.
always a good watch with 8888
.22 'rules' in effect
-pretty much no 22 opens up out of a pistol
-pretty much all 22's open up, fragment, or deform in some way out of a rifle
-the performance difference is usually so small that the only thing that really matters is 'Does my gun like it ?"
Well put. I was wondering if those stingers will cycle a 15-22.I’m about to just commit to .22 with good ammo for home defense. I do t wanna be near the blast of a .223 inside my house, but if the threat a gaggle of zombies, i might have to go there.
You don't want a .22LR to expand out of a defensive handgun. If the ammo expanded, it wouldn't be useful for anything larger than a squirrel or rabbit. .22LR lacks penetration. Although almost no available .22LR rounds expand at handgun velocities, they do not all achieve similar penetration. Federal Punch is the deepest penetrating .22LR round and the only one that penetrates 12" in gel even out of a 1⅞" snubnose barrel. It's consistent. The flat nose of the bullet should also cause slightly larger wound channels than the typical round nose.
.22LR penetration has always been marginal. If relying on it to defend your life, it's important to choose the best round. Because most .22LR rounds underpenetrate when shot through a handgun, and Federal Punch doesn't, it's worth buying.
With all "mousegun" handgun cartridges, careful ammunition selection is important to achieve minimum penetration standards from typical short handgun barrels. With .380, .32 ACP, and .32 Long, most non-expanding ammo will penetrate adequately, but expanding ammo won't. With .22LR, .22WMR, and .25 ACP, only the very best premium rounds designed for handgun use will consistently penetrate adequately (to FBI spec minimum 12" in ballistics gel). With .22 Short, no available round will penetrate adequately. Even though there isn't a great difference in velocity out of a very tiny barrel like a NAA mini-revolver, .22LR is a much better performer than the Short because it has rounds like Punch that can decently penetrate.
Underpenetrating rounds can still kill easily if put in the right place, but they also run the risk of not penetrating deep enough into the body of an attacker to stop them from killing a victim. It's happened many times. You want a round that can sink deep enough into the body to do damage. It might need to break through a bone or pass through a large amount of flesh to disable an attacker.
Maybe try a pistol caliber carbine.
Thanks so much for the excellent video. Just bought a new Keltec P-17 and after watching ur video I decided to get the Federal Punch ammo instead of the CCI Stinger 👍
Both me and my GF use 22lr punch in our daily carry. We are very confident in the ammo. Also we have never had a dud so QA/QC probably is higher than stuff in a loose box.
Excellent point... same here on duds...
Wow, the Punch continues to impress me in almost every caliber I’ve seen it in. The 9mm is great too.
Didn’t know it was in any other caliber but 22.
.22 WMR, .22 LR, .380, 9MM, 45 AUTO, .40 S&W, 10MM AUTO, .30 SC, .44 S&W SPL, .38 SPL. Yeah they make a lot.@@whereswaldo5740
Let's call a spade a spade. A .22 pistol is WAY better than a knife, sharp stick, or a club. Delivered energy is not a stopper. Penetration wins in ANY .22 encounter. The Punch's non-expanding bullet wins every time in my book due to penetration. Two thumbs up on this video.
Excellent presentation, Eric has always been great at demonstrations. Looking forward to more on the way. Clear and concise results shown.
WTF is a stinger? You mean Stanger?
I feel that initial damage from the stinger is way better than the punch. I don't think excessive penetration is as important as initial damage in a self defense situation.
I alternate the two if I carry a 22LR but I am going to try CCi's new Uppercut and see if it will be the new CCi to carry and alternate in the magazine with the Punch.
After watching a lot of videos on the new CCI Uppercut, I'm not convinced it would be a great defensive round so I'll just stick with Federal Punch if I ever need to carry using a 22LR pistol.
dude. thank you for taking a torch to the blocks so its actually clear. its takes the mold of the plastic wrap it ships in and so many channels don't bother to do anything about it
I put some PUNCH though my SR22 this week. Ran SUPER smooth! Thanks for the video!!
I have measured the velocity of the CCI Velocitors out of a 2 inch barrel. It is the same as the Punch and The Stinger. The Velocitors are a 40 grain bullet and may be more effective.
I’ve been running CCI Mini Mags for years now. I’m not sure what they look like in ballistic gel but I’m sure it’s impressive from a 10/22.
There’s no way in the world someone’s gonna not feel a 40 grain mini mag cracking through their front ribs going through the lungs and stopping on the back ribs as Paul Harrel has basically demonstrated. There’s just no way.
@@LKaramazov That’s what I’m thinking too.
@@rwdchannel2901 I’ll have to check that video out thanks for the info.
Mini mags are awesome!
Mini mag round nosé funciona mejor en carabinas automáticas y tiene buena penetración.
I'd be interested to see how these 2 do in an inbetween barrel length. Like a Ruger 10/22 Charger or something.
I think Tools and Targets does a few of his punch comparisons using a Charger. It's great ammo
lately i've been doing some more longer distance/ high elevation hiking and keeping the weight down is important, so, ive actually been carrying my S&W mp22c instead of my 9mm. its just soo light for a handgun, ive been thinking about picking up some of the punch to carry in it.
Wow, they have done a nice job designing the Punch, best of all worlds.
Awesome review! Cci is a staple in 22lr but that federal punch was impressive out of a shorter barrel too.
I’m feeling better about having a brick of Punch on hand.
Something to remember, clear ballistics gel doesn't show wound tracks as well as organic 10%, so these are even better on actual tissue 😎
Currently the 22 LR ammo that strikes the best balance of bullet weight and muzzle velocity to achieve the greatest power is CCI’s Stinger 22 LR Ammo. This round has a 32 grain CPHP bullet loaded to a muzzle velocity of 1,640 fps. The hyper-velocity Stinger cartridge boasts a whopping 191 ft lbs of muzzle energy. It furthermore remains supersonic past 75 yards, so it delivers an impressively flat trajectory.
Great test ! I use the Federal Punch as of two years ago !
The CCI stinger has been around since 1977 it’s a good round but it doesn’t group as well as the Federal Punch !
Looks like one should expect a Stinger or a Punch to tumble at lower muzzle velocities. So, a short barrel or long distance will lessen chance of mushrooming, but will increase the chance of tumbling after impact. Either thru tumbling or mushrooming, you get more tissue damage.
OMG! Rimfire finally has a nice defensive round! The Punch is incredible.
I would like to see a test done with the fragmenting 22lr
Both are definitely good 22lr rounds. I carry a Ruger SR22 with cci segmented hollow points and feel confident carrying this in the hot AZ summers. Beyond Seclusion on YT did a video on the cci segmented hollow points and the results were really impressive. Great video thanks.
I carry a SR22 as well. Having practiced with this firearm for thousands of rounds I feel absolutely safe carrying it.
So in an H²O filled milk jug... The Segmented Bullets leave a center exit hole with 3 radiating holes around it... and also EVERY time too...
Those segmented 22's will not pentrate enough or do enough damage on a big dude to shut down the central nervous system or take them out of the fight quickly. Your much better off with the cci stinger or federal punch.
Try a LCP max with underwood ammo.
@coreymoyers thats a badass gun for concealed carry lots of firepower that you can carry in your pocket comfortably and well concealed
Finally ive been looking for videos that gel test .22lr and .22wmr out of short barrels for defensive/hunting reasons. I keep my sons revolver loaded with federal when we are out in the woods and I've used it to kill a hog from about 15 yards with federal punch straight between the eyes drop instantly siezed up and died within about 30 seconds so thats what ive carried ever since and out of the rifle always CCI stinger. My woods gun is a MP 2.0 in 10mm
This is awesome but I really wish y'all would have included the CCI Copper 22 !!!
In my tests the copper 22 outshines them all!
Great test ! I have fired the CCI Stinger for a lot of years now and it performs well !
The Federal Punch is a new round for me and I haven’t fired them just yet !
I got a chance to do an accuracy test yesterday using Winchester super X vs CCI quite. The CCI was much more accurate and very quite! Using Grandpa's Stevens Buckhorn rifle!
GREAT VIDEO ERIC ...!!!!! THANK YOU...!!!! DOUBLE G.... " GARY "
That was a really interesting video. I like the stingers for barn raccoon control. They dispatch so much faster than a regular round without as much of the passthrough ive had with solids or even minimags. Looks like the punch would be great pistol ammo.
Fun video to watch, probably more fun to make, anyway, after watching the impact to the gel blocks I was surprised at how much more impact shock the 16 inch barrel delivered over the pistol barrel. The Stinger seemed to win out on initial shock caused to the gel block when fired out of the rifle. Great job showing the differences.
Great informative video!!!
I been stocking up on the CCI stingers 10.00 for 50 rounds... haven't shoot them yet...now I don't regret buying them and looking forward to shooting them...
Y'all can do what you want, but before i even start the video , I already know the punch will penetrate farther. If we're talking about 22lr self defense , penetration would be my top factor. That being said, 22lr isn't my first choice.
Just yesterday I took my 1022 out and from 30 yards away. I shot these Coca-Cola cans and I went through three of them out of five but the cans were completely exploded outward.
Been wanting to know how good CCI stingers are against some other decent ammo, thanks guys
Yeah, guys that do tests like this allow us to make informed decisions in the ammo aisle rather than shrugging our shoulders and grabbing a box...or 20.
@@flycrewthe only things I wouldn’t trust is winchester, Remington and federal bulk rounds or the like. Any CCI, or Aguila, and these punches, I’d trust completely!
@@LKaramazov Interesting. As far as 22 is considered I'm usually just looking for reliability. And for that, Aquila does just fine for me. Winchester white box and federal blue box on the other hand.....no way. Not in semi autos. At least not in AR 15 style semi autos.
@@flycrew I wouldn’t trust those Rounds not only in semis, but definitely not in my M&P compact.
@L Karamazov My M&P Compact is the only one of my semi-auto 22lr's that absolutely gobbles up Winchester white box. I've got so many rounds of Winchester through that thing with only a single failure to fire. Now, as far as my other 22 semi-autos go, white box is absolutely horrible.
I miss the remington viper and yellow jacket ammo. I can't find it anywhere. That was always my go to for hunting. Thunderbolt for fun the hyper velocity for hunting.
Really? Go online I just bought some but I agree it is hard to find. I’ve been buying a lot of Aguila super extra and super maximum 1700fps shits stupid lol
@@tylerrussell3388 been doing the same myself the aguila. Where did you find the Remington's? We're they yellow jackets or vipers. I used to own the viper rifle the ammo was made for. Great little gun.
In my experience CCI’s have been extremely reliable in every firearm I have. Winchesters have NOT
Just a language nerd point: You should be saying "temporary." Temporal is the opposite of eternal, in a theological sense. Those cavities might just translate the target from the temporal to the eternal. Please keep up the kickin' content and your avid advocacy for our 2A rights. Greetings from near Lithonia.
Caught that too. Made me wince each time. Temporal wound cavities would be interesting to see though.
The flat surface on the end of a bullet is called the meplat. The bigger the meplat, the better the hydrodynamic shack transferred into the recipient body as displayed by the Punch cavities.
What?
The reason why this bullet has a flat point is to help insure straight, nose forward, penetration, nothing to do with the BS made up terms you are misspelling. RN bullets tend to yaw, which cuts into penetration depth.
I think you need to learn a little more?
@@johnwilburn8319 what?
Interesting video. Many thanks for the information and review of the two cartridges. 👍
I wasn't too surprised by the penetration differences between the two weapons though.
I still have half a box of Stingers from the late '80's, as well as some current production. Both are dynamite on armadillos from my old Glenfield Mod 60 22LR. Yet from a 4 3/4" single action revolver not so much...
Marlin model 60! My first firearm! Loved it! It did run stingers quite well! Still my go to rifle round! Punch from my handguns from now on though! We’ll for now anyways!
Of course, the next question is which ammo has the best consistency of performance. Does the Punch exhibit any bad primers or underloads? I've always found the CCI to be remarkably consistent, and everything else is crap. Even federal.
Take about five mags of both brands and with a chronograph, see how many bad primers and underperforming loads you get from each one.
The Red Barron was killed by a shot from the ground, using a .303 British shot from an infantryman with an Enfield rifle. The round hit the side of the cockpit and tumbled through the pilot's body. The estimated cavitation was 8" through his body, liquifying organs as the round exited his body. He lived long enough to land in a field, then fell out of the plane as he said "Kaput" meaning 'over'.
I wouldn't want to be shot with any of your .22 magnum rounds. Any penetration greater than 7" is going out the target's back.
I'd like to see Federal Punch vs CCI Uppercut!!!
Tested both for reliability in my Ruger sr22 3.5" barrel. 100 rounds of each, Punch had zero failures and Stinger had one failure. Both are reliable, in my opinion.
I use 9 mm Federal Punch in my EDC, got it on a good sale and very happy with the performance.
Problem with 22 for self defense is reliability!
That’s not really an issue with premium ammunition. Punch is specifically designed to be extremely reliable. Just stay away from cheap bulk ammunition for defense.
Lmao Eric with the canadips hat is the most American thing I’ve ever seen 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Would have been nice if you could have included the CCI Velocitors as well into your truly wonderful comparison.
God Bless.
Great video, looking forward to seeing the slug gel test. Thanks
Just come out and say it: Punch rules over Stingers.
Try the 22wmr versions of the punch and cci hp + v. That would be a cool video
I don't know why more people don't choose a .22 WMR for defense (assuming they can't use centerfire for whatever reason). There's not too many semi-autos in that caliber, but plenty of revolvers.
Agreed, very interesting results. Indeed. I too believe in Stingers, have for decades. The most effective, best element of the Stinger is sadly no longer present. When CCI decided to end the PentaPoint projectile, it definitely changed the wound channel characteristics. Still an excellent job for the task it's asked to take on.
I am impressed by the Federal Punch in .22LR. Wicked twisted flight of injury from a pistol!!! Wow. Appreciate the info and share. Great work and presentation.
Would you happen to know when they dropped the PentaPoint?
Thanks for the info. Great to share with the wife.
now that these ammos are going overseas to Czechoslovakian Company why would i get either
Stingers for the win. I found that the bullet shape on the punch is problematic in alot of semi autos.
I would like to try and use some federal punch but we can't get them around here yet or it's hard to find any but I do like the stinger
I have not tried the Punch yet but i do love the Aguila Super Maximum, their Stinger load, 30gr at +-1700fps. The Aguila is actually more accurate than stingers in my guns, Marlin 39 Mountie 18", Model 60 20" and 81DL 24". I need to pull my chrono out and do some testing. Thanks for your testing.
I have found that the micro groove rifling on the marlin 39a is not "deep" enough to stabilize the stingers with their reduced bearing surface. Had to go to yellow jackets. Works good lasts a long time.
I was impressed the Punch expanded beautifully in the rifle. To me the Punch seemed superior in both tests.
I tried both on my m&p 15/22 recently . My gun hated the stinger. However federal punch was perfect. No single problem with any 700 rounds I tried. Not much cleaning needed after shooting punch either. The only thing I hated is they come in box of 50 rounds. I need thousands of it bro. Lol
I kind of wonder if the numerous trail of bullets, in the same block, affects the results. It seemed to weaken the gel (as I noticed in the slow motion shots)..the more trails, the more after-wiggle in the block. Nonetheless, good video and interesting results. Thanks for the content - subb'd. Cheers from Toronto
Would be curious how CCI mini mag stacks up to these.
"CCI stinger (perfect 12 inch penetration") that's what she said. Seems like yesterday they was $0.02 a load.
That’s how my wife’s boyfriend described their evening last night
My concern would be feeding those flat point bullets.
THANKS for solving my puzzle Eric! I already have some of each. I just loaded 2 BX25's for my Ruger 10/22 with the Stingers and 4 Glock 44 mags with my Punch.
Excellent ... looking forward to the next one!
Very interesting for sure. Wonder how the velocitor would stack up. May have to get some punch ammo for small game season. We can shoot hogs with a rimfire in Florida. My 17hmr weighs a ton, but my norinco takedown 22 weights nothing.
What happened to the remington viper round and the cci vlocitor round
Sweet video thanks I can't wait to get my hands on the uppercut but just like punch in 22lr and wmr it took months before it was in my area or online
