I was a victim of an attempted car jacking and defended myself with a Walter P22 with 10 rounds of Federal Punch. All I can say is it did what it was supposed to do. I’m alive to type this comment the other guys…not so much. Unfortunately. I’m sold on the Federal Punch. It saved my life.

dude. thank you for taking a torch to the blocks so its actually clear. its takes the mold of the plastic wrap it ships in and so many channels don't bother to do anything about it
Growing up, my buddies dad had a really good friend that worked at cci. He had a 5 gallon bucket of stingers at all times. I can't tell you how many small furry/feathered/scaly things we killed with stingers. Coyotes to fish. Badgers, gophers, rats at the dump. That is a great round.
On small game, the impact of a CCI Stinger is legendary. It almost turns a standard .22 into a .22 mag. We got a permit to remove some large nuisance birds that were leaving a mess on playgrounds. We used pellet rifles, and subsonic .22 all the way up to Stingers. There was no comparison to the "crumpling affect" of 1600 fps.
The Stinger has always been considered the gold standard in .22 LR “defensive” ammunition. Looks like that title might go to the Punch. Good to see the .22 evolving over the years. Truly a fun cartridge to shoot, and can be very deadly.
Both are definitely good 22lr rounds. I carry a Ruger SR22 with cci segmented hollow points and feel confident carrying this in the hot AZ summers. Beyond Seclusion on YT did a video on the cci segmented hollow points and the results were really impressive.
Even 36 gr. round point will do the trick. Shot placement is everything. That said, if I carried .22LR for self defense I'd be loading one of the two cartridges showcased in this vid. Every little bit helps.
@@BillB23I’m of the opinion at this point that MANY of these .22 rounds provide excellent defensive protection. 40 gr Minimags target rounds for penetration, Aguila also makes several reliable rounds. Inside my house I wouldn’t want the blast of a .223 probably, but I might end up there in shtf despite myself. .22 is extremely accurate and, after seeing so many of these videos, I think it works just fine.
Thanks so much for the excellent video. Just bought a new Keltec P-17 and after watching ur video I decided to get the Federal Punch ammo instead of the CCI Stinger 👍
I kept a 10/22 with a bx25 magazine, flashlight and stingers in the corner for my girlfriend when I worked 3rd shift. We sleep upstairs so if someone ever made it through 2 locked doors hopefully they'd make enough noise for her wake up, get behind the book case and aim that thing at the fatal funnel aka long hallway at the top of the stairs. She's shot it enough to know how to clear dud rounds or malfunctions in the dark.
I have many boxes of first year manufacture Stingers from 1975. I still have 9 boxes left from what I found in a 30 cal can I put away decades ago and forgot about. Every year I shoot 20 rounds from what is left to see if they are still reliable. So far 100% ignition and full performance compared to recent production Stingers. Because of that, for long term storage I stick with Stingers for the proven longer than usual shelf life for .22LR. I also have a few boxes of Sears .22LR ammo my Dad bought in 1980 give or take a year. Few of them fire and if you pull the bullet, the powder literally looks and feels like grease. That Sears ammo is a good example for what I usually expect from 45+ year old .22LR ammo. Just thought y'all would find that interesting.

My woods gun is a MP 2.0 in 10mm
Marlin has been making the 39 A for years and I fell in love with one my Dad had borrowed from a friend when I was young. As I grew up my Dad bought the Ruger single shot breach loaded in 45-70 which he gave me when he bought the Marlin 45-70 and I inherited it upon his death , I had the barrel cut to the shorter version and installed the modified lever that allowed you to spin the gun under your arm and load another round into its chamber. I bought the stainless steel version when I moved to Alaska and had taken moose and bear with this gun

Best advice right here. I got eley match on the idea that they're higher quality and should therefore be more reliable and shoot when needed... A few hundred additional rounds of automatch and I'm sold on my tx22 ammo. It doesn't have to be expensive, just reliable
Fun video to watch, probably more fun to make, anyway, after watching the impact to the gel blocks I was surprised at how much more impact shock the 16 inch barrel delivered over the pistol barrel. The Stinger seemed to win out on initial shock caused to the gel block when fired out of the rifle. Great job showing the differences.
THANKS for solving my puzzle Eric! I already have some of each. I just loaded 2 BX25's for my Ruger 10/22 with the Stingers and 4 Glock 44 mags with my Punch.
Both me and my GF use 22lr punch in our daily carry. We are very confident in the ammo. Also we have never had a dud so QA/QC probably is higher than stuff in a loose box.
Currently the 22 LR ammo that strikes the best balance of bullet weight and muzzle velocity to achieve the greatest power is CCI’s Stinger 22 LR Ammo. This round has a 32 grain CPHP bullet loaded to a muzzle velocity of 1,640 fps. The hyper-velocity Stinger cartridge boasts a whopping 191 ft lbs of muzzle energy. It furthermore remains supersonic past 75 yards, so it delivers an impressively flat trajectory.
I been stocking up on the CCI stingers 10.00 for 50 rounds... haven't shoot them yet...now I don't regret buying them and looking forward to shooting them...
I carry an airlite 357, because i like the size, lack of weight, especially compared to a large amount of energy delivery. That said, .22 shaming is a gun snob activity, based in zero facts and science. 22s are kick ass for what they are, which is micro, lightweight, extremely concealable, and extremely affordable.
Tested both for reliability in my Ruger sr22 3.5" barrel. 100 rounds of each, Punch had zero failures and Stinger had one failure. Both are reliable, in my opinion.
That was a really interesting video. I like the stingers for barn raccoon control. They dispatch so much faster than a regular round without as much of the passthrough ive had with solids or even minimags. Looks like the punch would be great pistol ammo.
Both are definitely good 22lr rounds. I carry a Ruger SR22 with cci segmented hollow points and feel confident carrying this in the hot AZ summers. Beyond Seclusion on YT did a video on the cci segmented hollow points and the results were really impressive. Great video thanks.
Those segmented 22's will not pentrate enough or do enough damage on a big dude to shut down the central nervous system or take them out of the fight quickly. Your much better off with the cci stinger or federal punch.
always a good watch with 8888 .22 'rules' in effect -pretty much no 22 opens up out of a pistol -pretty much all 22's open up, fragment, or deform in some way out of a rifle -the performance difference is usually so small that the only thing that really matters is 'Does my gun like it ?"
Well put. I was wondering if those stingers will cycle a 15-22.I’m about to just commit to .22 with good ammo for home defense. I do t wanna be near the blast of a .223 inside my house, but if the threat a gaggle of zombies, i might have to go there.
You don't want a .22LR to expand out of a defensive handgun. If the ammo expanded, it wouldn't be useful for anything larger than a squirrel or rabbit. .22LR lacks penetration. Although almost no available .22LR rounds expand at handgun velocities, they do not all achieve similar penetration. Federal Punch is the deepest penetrating .22LR round and the only one that penetrates 12" in gel even out of a 1⅞" snubnose barrel. It's consistent. The flat nose of the bullet should also cause slightly larger wound channels than the typical round nose. .22LR penetration has always been marginal. If relying on it to defend your life, it's important to choose the best round. Because most .22LR rounds underpenetrate when shot through a handgun, and Federal Punch doesn't, it's worth buying. With all "mousegun" handgun cartridges, careful ammunition selection is important to achieve minimum penetration standards from typical short handgun barrels. With .380, .32 ACP, and .32 Long, most non-expanding ammo will penetrate adequately, but expanding ammo won't. With .22LR, .22WMR, and .25 ACP, only the very best premium rounds designed for handgun use will consistently penetrate adequately (to FBI spec minimum 12" in ballistics gel). With .22 Short, no available round will penetrate adequately. Even though there isn't a great difference in velocity out of a very tiny barrel like a NAA mini-revolver, .22LR is a much better performer than the Short because it has rounds like Punch that can decently penetrate. Underpenetrating rounds can still kill easily if put in the right place, but they also run the risk of not penetrating deep enough into the body of an attacker to stop them from killing a victim. It's happened many times. You want a round that can sink deep enough into the body to do damage. It might need to break through a bone or pass through a large amount of flesh to disable an attacker.
Agreed, very interesting results. Indeed. I too believe in Stingers, have for decades. The most effective, best element of the Stinger is sadly no longer present. When CCI decided to end the PentaPoint projectile, it definitely changed the wound channel characteristics. Still an excellent job for the task it's asked to take on. I am impressed by the Federal Punch in .22LR. Wicked twisted flight of injury from a pistol!!! Wow. Appreciate the info and share. Great work and presentation.
I always appreciate you informative and interesting topic videos. The one thing I like is you are not opinionated. For example; when you gently mentioned that some people wish to carry a 22 for self defense and then gave positives for that subject. Many other videos are bias and over opinionated, sometimes offensive to some viewers. Thank you for your passing along information's to us viewers.
My grandfather usually carried a. .22. I still rock his NAA .22 mag sometimes. The name punch definitely rings a bell. My grandfather was a boxer, and lifelomg hunter. He always said that he would shove thet little gun up their nose if he had to use it. He ended up killing an assailant with a savage .32 ACP. He was 73 yrs old, and on a walk when a guy tried to rob him. He fired two shots, and one was to the nose.
Looks like one should expect a Stinger or a Punch to tumble at lower muzzle velocities. So, a short barrel or long distance will lessen chance of mushrooming, but will increase the chance of tumbling after impact. Either thru tumbling or mushrooming, you get more tissue damage.
The slow-motion shot of the Punch through the rifle showed an incredible ballooning temporary cavity which appeared to exceed that of the Stinger out of either weapon.
USAF base defense, m4 5.56, Beretta M9 9mm (Now Sig M17 9mm), Remington 870 or Mossberg 590 12g. Three basic weapons and calibers. We used them, the cops use them, ammo will always be found for these. Good share Johnny. 👍
I have measured the velocity of the CCI Velocitors out of a 2 inch barrel. It is the same as the Punch and The Stinger. The Velocitors are a 40 grain bullet and may be more effective.
Hi, First I'd like to say,Thank you for your service. In regards to your video I was pleasantly surprised by the ballistic testing into the gel blocks. If you think a part 2 of these tests appropriate, I'd like to see the same bullet/weapons tested for accuracy. Thanks for your videos from a now new subscriber.
I got a chance to do an accuracy test yesterday using Winchester super X vs CCI quite. The CCI was much more accurate and very quite! Using Grandpa's Stevens Buckhorn rifle!
The flat surface on the end of a bullet is called the meplat. The bigger the meplat, the better the hydrodynamic shack transferred into the recipient body as displayed by the Punch cavities.
What? The reason why this bullet has a flat point is to help insure straight, nose forward, penetration, nothing to do with the BS made up terms you are misspelling. RN bullets tend to yaw, which cuts into penetration depth.
Interesting video. Many thanks for the information and review of the two cartridges. 👍 I wasn't too surprised by the penetration differences between the two weapons though. I still have half a box of Stingers from the late '80's, as well as some current production. Both are dynamite on armadillos from my old Glenfield Mod 60 22LR. Yet from a 4 3/4" single action revolver not so much...
Marlin model 60! My first firearm! Loved it! It did run stingers quite well! Still my go to rifle round! Punch from my handguns from now on though! We’ll for now anyways!
Let's call a spade a spade. A .22 pistol is WAY better than a knife, sharp stick, or a club. Delivered energy is not a stopper. Penetration wins in ANY .22 encounter. The Punch's non-expanding bullet wins every time in my book due to penetration. Two thumbs up on this video.

Mega Upvotes !!!! This is the most Real world conversation on these “Poor Peoples’ Rounds “ that most of us shoot every day and train with ! Using both a pistol and a rifle using the 2 most available power rounds ! You have done a most valuable service here ! GODSPEED to All !!
I feel that initial damage from the stinger is way better than the punch. I don't think excessive penetration is as important as initial damage in a self defense situation.
I alternate the two if I carry a 22LR but I am going to try CCi's new Uppercut and see if it will be the new CCi to carry and alternate in the magazine with the Punch.
After watching a lot of videos on the new CCI Uppercut, I'm not convinced it would be a great defensive round so I'll just stick with Federal Punch if I ever need to carry using a 22LR pistol.
There’s no way in the world someone’s gonna not feel a 40 grain mini mag cracking through their front ribs going through the lungs and stopping on the back ribs as Paul Harrel has basically demonstrated. There’s just no way.
I have the punches and upper cuts for my pistol and revolvers. If you read the tags on the boxes, they are made for 2 1/2 inch to 6 inch barrels. They do make a giid defense round or small game/ varmit round but that is almost all 22lrs. I use mine for hunting and self defense when i don't want to carry my bigger caliber firearms.
Thanks for the demonstration and analysis. Impressive results! So, option for backpacking for minimum weight --> AR-7 with Stinger or Punch rounds sounds like a decent choice.
In a survival scenario the stinger or punch out of a rifle could take down larger game like deer or hogs with a head or neck shot at close range. Iv read the most popular round for deer poachers in Texas is the 22 magnum because it's much lower report than large rifle rounds but packs enough punch to dispatch big game.
I have not tried the Punch yet but i do love the Aguila Super Maximum, their Stinger load, 30gr at +-1700fps. The Aguila is actually more accurate than stingers in my guns, Marlin 39 Mountie 18", Model 60 20" and 81DL 24". I need to pull my chrono out and do some testing. Thanks for your testing.
I have found that the micro groove rifling on the marlin 39a is not "deep" enough to stabilize the stingers with their reduced bearing surface. Had to go to yellow jackets. Works good lasts a long time.
I recently tested a ton of 22lr out of a 6.5" revolver and found something very interesting, which I suspect can be attributed to the burn rate profile of the powders in each round. What I found was that I consistently got better performance out of my 6.5" barrel with the mini-mag than I did with the stinger. The mini-mag delivered an average of 15 ft lbs more energy, more controlled expansion, and almost 50% better penetration. Some other stuff I found interesting was that a tie for #1 in energy was the superx hyper velocity(1435), but the superx std(1280) was only 5 fpe behind it. Also the browning bpr, which is rated exactly the same as the superx hyper, was complete garbage. Out of 10 rounds I had a ftf, a near squib that barely made it out of the barrel didn't even register on the chrony, and the rest had an ES of 300fps.
lately i've been doing some more longer distance/ high elevation hiking and keeping the weight down is important, so, ive actually been carrying my S&W mp22c instead of my 9mm. its just soo light for a handgun, ive been thinking about picking up some of the punch to carry in it.
I like watching your videos, you respect the affordability in othes financial status. I'll be watching mire in the future, as I clean my Firearms. VERY VERY educational, love it!, don't stop. The burn offs? Kick ass.
My "always" gun is a NAA 22 too. 1-1/2" barrel. It's in my pocket 24-7. I was carrying CCI mini mags- 36gr hollow points. But I recently switched to the CCI 40gr Velocitors. I did pick up a box of the Punch, but haven't tried them in it yet.
Great comparison. I was not at all shocked that the carbine got less penetration. Crazy analogy here, but the 460 Weatherby runs the same 500 grain bullets as the ancient 450 Nitro Express or the 458 Winchester Magnum but about 400 fps faster. It would seem that the 460 does not penetrate as well because it expands so quickly. But...the same thing happened with heavy jacketed solids which deform at the 2600fps of the Weatherby. I participated in one of these experiments but they have been done many times by enthusiasts, manufacturers, and even some governmental agencies. Our own USFS conducted a pretty comprehensive set of tests to determine the most affective cartridge for defense against large bears in Alaska and the wimpy 458 Winchester out performed the 460. It just all shows that there is a lot more to terminal ballistics than velocity and foot pounds of energy. Great content. Cheers!
Punch for 2 legged animals. Stinger for 4 legged animals.

That said, .22 shaming is a gun snob activity, based in zero facts and science. 22s are kick ass for what they are, which is micro, lightweight, extremely concealable, and extremely affordable.
Well Said
I'd like to see Federal Punch vs CCI Uppercut!!!
I carry a SR22 as well. Having practiced with this firearm for thousands of rounds I feel absolutely safe carrying it.
So in an H²O filled milk jug... The Segmented Bullets leave a center exit hole with 3 radiating holes around it... and also EVERY time too...
Those segmented 22's will not pentrate enough or do enough damage on a big dude to shut down the central nervous system or take them out of the fight quickly. Your much better off with the cci stinger or federal punch.
Try a LCP max with underwood ammo.
@coreymoyers thats a badass gun for concealed carry lots of firepower that you can carry in your pocket comfortably and well concealed
Good information. Thanks for running this test.
Love that shirt! It’s amazing to see how the punch compares to the stinger. Good job putting this together.
always a good watch with 8888
.22 'rules' in effect
-pretty much no 22 opens up out of a pistol
-pretty much all 22's open up, fragment, or deform in some way out of a rifle
-the performance difference is usually so small that the only thing that really matters is 'Does my gun like it ?"
Maybe try a pistol caliber carbine.
Would you happen to know when they dropped the PentaPoint?
Great video, looking forward to seeing the slug gel test. Thanks
Definitely got to get Federal credit for the punch, every video I see, it looks impressive.
Something to remember, clear ballistics gel doesn't show wound tracks as well as organic 10%, so these are even better on actual tissue 😎
That mushroomed punch out the 16 inch looked AWESOME!
Looks like one should expect a Stinger or a Punch to tumble at lower muzzle velocities. So, a short barrel or long distance will lessen chance of mushrooming, but will increase the chance of tumbling after impact. Either thru tumbling or mushrooming, you get more tissue damage.
Good testing. They are both good hot rounds. 👍
Thank you for that info. I've been carrying the Velocitors in my NAA mini revolver. It has an 1-1/8" barrel.
GREAT VIDEO ERIC ...!!!!! THANK YOU...!!!! DOUBLE G.... " GARY "
I think you need to learn a little more?
@@johnwilburn8319 what?
Interesting video. Many thanks for the information and review of the two cartridges. 👍
I wasn't too surprised by the penetration differences between the two weapons though.
Great informative video!!!
This is awesome but I really wish y'all would have included the CCI Copper 22 !!!
In my tests the copper 22 outshines them all!
Glad to see y’all shooting and testing and not just talkin. In a revolver I’m not so against .22LR, no go for a semi IMO though due to rimfire.
After 100's of study, we settled on your channel. Authentic, to-the-point data delivered from an impartial highly respected veteran - This is why we follow - New Empire Approved ✅
I have had some truly SHOCKING results with Stingers, in both rifles and pistols.
I am gonna stay with them. Thanks for posting this.
Same here 😊
Ditto
I would like to see a test done with the fragmenting 22lr
Tools and targets has a complete series on cci punch VS everything, check it out
Excellent ... looking forward to the next one!
Haven’t watched this dudes videos since I was a kid, glad to sees he’s still making relevant content
Loved the old Remington " yellow jacket " rounds back in the day.
I still have a bunch
Very nice video. I didn't expect the pistols would have greater penatration. Thanks.
So glad someone I respect did this! I was torn...
Love videos like these. You could do a whole sub carry gun ammo series or mouse gun series
I still have 14 Stinger bullets .22 LR of almost 30 years, I use it on the Beretta M21 for travel . . . never failed ! 😮😂❤
I’ve been running CCI Mini Mags for years now. I’m not sure what they look like in ballistic gel but I’m sure it’s impressive from a 10/22.
There’s no way in the world someone’s gonna not feel a 40 grain mini mag cracking through their front ribs going through the lungs and stopping on the back ribs as Paul Harrel has basically demonstrated. There’s just no way.
@@LKaramazov That’s what I’m thinking too.
@@rwdchannel2901 I’ll have to check that video out thanks for the info.
Mini mags are awesome!
Mini mag round nosé funciona mejor en carabinas automáticas y tiene buena penetración.
Sweet video thanks I can't wait to get my hands on the uppercut but just like punch in 22lr and wmr it took months before it was in my area or online
I'd be interested to see how these 2 do in an inbetween barrel length. Like a Ruger 10/22 Charger or something.
I think Tools and Targets does a few of his punch comparisons using a Charger. It's great ammo
I have Both and have not tested so Sure Glad you did test them Thanks Eric .My P17 will work close i promise .
I am considering a .22 cal. postal for target practice. This has been very helpful. Thanks.
Would have been nice if you could have included the CCI Velocitors as well into your truly wonderful comparison.
God Bless.
thank you for the video. with all the current events going on these days its good to see you again
Thanks for the info. Great to share with the wife.
Thank you for not making me sit through the velocity testing. That is sincerely appreciated
April 2024 , Punch is near impossible to find. Stingers are easy to find and under $11 per 50 in my neck of the woods. Great video!
I think people will buy both .very good video .
Hey Eric, Nice shirt! I thought that was quite funny. Great video. Keep up the good work, brother.
Great test of some impressive 22 ammo...Thanks sir.
Very interesting. Never would have thought this would be the result.
lately i've been doing some more longer distance/ high elevation hiking and keeping the weight down is important, so, ive actually been carrying my S&W mp22c instead of my 9mm. its just soo light for a handgun, ive been thinking about picking up some of the punch to carry in it.
I like watching your videos, you respect the affordability in othes financial status. I'll be watching mire in the future, as I clean my Firearms. VERY VERY educational, love it!, don't stop. The burn offs? Kick ass.
My "always" gun is a NAA mini revolver loaded with Federal Punch.
Cheers!
