I read an article by a police officer, in one of the large city's, that compiled all the civilian vs. civilian shooting data he could get his hands on and it showed; almost every time after someone was shot one time the fight stopped. It didn't matter if it was .22LR or 44 Mag.

I almost knew what handgun caliber was used till later when I read about it in the news or was told by PD or ED staff and never could tell in the back if my rig based in the injury. All handgun rounds looked the same. I will say the one I did know ahead of time was a LEO who took 3 rounds to the vest, they where all from a 380 and man the bruising and broken rib did not make 380 look weak that's for sure.

I honestly drew the opposite conclusions from the data presented here. .380 got the job done; all of those shots were put-downs, even if they were less spectacular than the obviously more deadly 9mm's results. Shots that don't exit the target aren't going through walls into my kid's room, or into innocent bystanders. Unless you see yourself facing armored opponents, 9mm seems like overkill, based on what I saw here. Different strokes, I guess?

The .380 meets the first and most important criteria for any participant in a firefight: Have A Gun. It can, properly employed, meet the second most important criteria: Make well placed hits in a vital area. Criteria after those two are interesting, and we spend a whole lot of time discussing them, but after the first two criteria are satisfied, they fade quickly into secondary insignificance.

.380 is the smallest "normal cartridge" that doesn't have some BS like it's rimmed, semi rimmed or rimfire or something. It's rimless, straight walled, it doesn't even have a taper. Beautiful simplicity.

The 380 is no slouch. As another respondent mentioned, the visible results are not as spectacular as the 9mm, but the damage is there. Over penetration means that a good bit of the bullet's energy is spent AFTER THE BULLET exits the target. Not so with the 380 for the most part. It stays inside the target where all of the energy is expended. Also, in Europe, the 380 is called a 9mm Short which is exactly what it is. So, let's not sell the 380 short, pun intended. Beyond this, good demo.

I own several of both, but find myself carrying a .380 far more than the 9MM. My current carry choice is a Ruger LCP Max with a 12 round mag. I like the extra capacity and the slightly longer mag makes it more comfortable in my hand. It's small, very easy to conceal and if pressed into service will do just fine. The key to any weapon is being proficient in its use. Dirtbags normally don't face trained armed resistance. Whether I pull out a .380 or a 9mm I'm in the fight. #hooah #soldierforlife

I personally wouldnt want to be hit with a 22 LR, much less 380.
Also, one thing that people often dont think about calibers that are often considered "underpowered" is that their ordinary factory ammo tends to me subsonic, which is an interesting plus depending on what you wanna do.
Also, stopping power is outdated af, what stops a determined attacker is hypovolemic shock or central nervous system shutdown. Unless you're carrying something like a shotgun, shot placement and volume of fire will always be way more important than how large your bullet is.

You're assuming that accuracy won't be a problem. You don't have to be as accurate with better rounds, because they can turn a near miss of a vital area into a hit.
.380 also has known over-penetration issues, which creates the possibility of doing everything right, and still killing an innocent bystander. The tests these guys do in this video are from a gun that most people wouldn't use (.380 is more popular for pocket pistols) into targets that are "naked." The tests greatly exaggerate the actual expansion of .380 self-defense rounds, perhaps because they are promoting them.

As a pathologist with forensic training (though I don't practice in that field), I was quite impressed with the .380. Yes, I wasn't standing there, but from what I could observe, there was no instance where the 9mm reached a vital organ that the .380 did not. In addition, the .380 frequently (?always} failed to exit the target dummy, sometimes by the slimmest of margins. You didn't test shooting through cover, so it's definitely possible that the 9mm will out perform the .380 in some of those circumstances, but how often does that really occur in a civilian self defense shooting? However, based upon what I could see in your video, I'm going to say that I believe the .380 is superior to the 9mm in crowded urban environments due to it's virtually equal penetration and repeated demonstration of a lack of overpenetration.

He's pretty much covered everything on just about any firearm, any ammo caliber, multiple brands, anything any American citizen can lawfully possess, testing on paper targets, chronograph, soda jugs, and meat targets which typically consist of pork ribs front and back, oranges to simulate lung tissue, covered in leather couch for skin, 4 layers of T-shirts front and back and sometimes winter coats with the new and improved high tech bullet fleece stop so he can catch any overpenetrating rounds for examination. I'm not saying Paul Harrell is the best, I'm just saying to take a look at multiple sources with different approaches to ammo and firearm analysis. One eye opener was his Why Hollow Points Don't Expand. Clogging. I never would have considered that. Anyway, just a suggestion. Oh lastly, regardless of the size or power of a bullet, humans getting shot is way different than animals. Humans perceive and react to pain and injuries differently than animals. .380's biggest issue is over-penetration due to failure to expand. If we're talking about self-defense rounds, .380 is possibly the worst, most dangerous offender.
Check out penetration of .380 FMJ. It penetrates over 20 inches of ballistic gelatin when fired from a tiny gun. You get something like that when a self-defense round fails to expand.
This issue is worst in the short-barrelled pocket pistols. A longer barrel may or may not generate enough velocity for expansion, but I would heavily research that before relying on it, and I know for a fact that the .380 pocket pistols have serious failure-to-expand issues.

A fairer test would be on the control, so firing a 3 or 5 round string or full mag dump and see which is easier to keep on target and make effective hits. If you only have 1 bullet, sure a 9mm is probably more effective, but if you've only got 1 bullet, you're doing (or have done) something wrong. In a real life or death situation, you fire until your target is no longer a threat and most self-defence enagements are at a range of around 5yds. If you can control a 9mm, you'll probably find it easier to get more well-placed shots on a target with a .380

In reality in a defensive situation you don't really care if the other guy dies as long as he stops doing whatever he's doing - immediately. With that being said don't get me wrong guns will over penetrate but unless you are being Mr Hero like the young man at the mall in Indiana. There will most likely be no innocent bystander if you are being attacked and have to defend yourself. So I would say carry what your comfortable with I have everything from .22-.357 and have carried all of them depending on the situation. Any gun will stop someone if you dump enough rounds in them all these gun gurus on RUclips are all ways talking BS about over pen and showing shooting only one time where does it say your only aloud to shoot an attacker one time. Most of them have no real knowledge only what they themselves have learned from RUclips. As an ex service person, I carried first a Browning 9mm High Power and a Sig p226 9mm. I used a my browning a couple times in field. Its topping power proven very good. For the past decade, I have lived in Mexico and Married a lovely Mexican women. As we have a very large 650m2 house, it is very visible to the locals...and so we keep a Sig380 as a weapon for our house security. It is the largest caliber legal by law. While I was away one weekend, a group of 4 men broke into the house and had a truck outside to take all the furniture's. We know people who have had this happen and many die. My wife and daughter were home alone, and she confronted them through the lounge room where they were entering through the balcony door. Distance 6 meters On seeing her with a weapon...the first two immediately rushed her with a machete raised high. She place 4 rapid shots to center mass and the first guy, and went down like a poleaxed steer. This was a BIG dude. She got one shot off to the second guy and hit him upper left thigh. He went down. The other two ran. Our internal security video footage caught all this. The police just said " good kill" and left it at that .... even before I arrived home. The moral of the story...even after being a 9mm shooter my entire life...I have the greatest confidence in a woman ability to stop an attacker with a 380. Id she could...I will have no problems. You need to live this live to understand if it is good or not. Running figures and ballistic gel is not a good indicator of what it will do! I recommend sig 365 380. From experience.

I know from personal experience in 2015 when I was attacked by 4 men in an attempted robbery. I say attempted because after two shots of 380, nobody wanted to rob me nor fight me for my wallet. At point blank range with someone punching on me and reaching back to punch me again unprovoked and without warning, one shot went in between two front ribs, and through the heart had a small hole going in the heart and a whopper of a hole exiting the heart, hitting a lung as that bullet smacked up against a back rib and did not exit with a Hornadny self defense hollow point round. This shot did NOT knock the guy over but did get his attention enough to want to stop the attack. The other shot hit the base top of his ring finger, deformed a lot as it exited out his palm making a Knarly exit wound and continued to the surface of his chest and did not enter his chest cavity and fell to the ground (the bullet) the attacker was able to take a few steps to which it was reported that he did an unmitigated forward face plant to the pavement. This is consistent with a person losing a heart being nonfunctional has about 10 seconds to decide what to do with the short period of consciousness they have left. Ten seconds I would argue is enough time to punch someone enough times with enough force to kill a person, or draw a gun and shoot you back, or even present a knife and start slashing you until they fall over. A 380 needs a head shot to be instantly disabling. A heart shot will kill someone but will not knock that person over unless they weigh less than 80 pounds (maybe) but once they do go down, they are not getting up. With four attackers I only had 7 rounds lcp ruger to begin with as firing only two shots and not emptying my gun I think every trainer in my life would be proud. I would have done two to the chest and finished with a head shot but I had four attackers of which any one of them could have started in punching me if they did not run away after the first two shots were fired. Once the two shots were fired I looked for the other three to shoot, everybody was gone so I stopped firing, got my glasses back on my face and got out of there before the remaining three could come around and attack me again. Oh and this was at night, in a dark parking lot and severely compromised with the first devastating punch by the first attacker in the fight/robbery.
True point…my glasses were knocked off my face making me legally blind and one of the attackers told investigators that he was running up to my drivers door and stopped. The investigator asked why he stopped? The attacker replied, “because there was a gun pointed at him.” He was looking down the barrel of my just fired smoking gun with my finger on the trigger looking for my attackers to shoot them. When i could not see them I stopped firing, just like training dictates. AS I wanted to shoot my remaining attacker(s) I could not see the one running up to me to joinn in the fight I could not see him to shoot him but he could see me with my finger on the trigger and the gun pointed right at him stopping him in his tracks without having to fire another shot. I have since told people that you should never try robbing a complete and total stranger. You should get to know them first and if they are former competitive military shooters, civilian competitive shooters, you might want to buy that guy a beer so that you can live another day. Or just do not rob people.

I never leave the house without my leetle fren, Max, first name ruger. I got an A in statistics so tend to rely on them than some guy who wants to measure his "gun" against yours. First, it is unlikely and a low probability you will ever use your gun in self defense. Second, statistically, if you draw, 98% of attackers flee without you even firing. If you fire and miss even more flee. And if you hit them center mass, and statistically the average shot is 9 feet, kinda hard to miss even under stress, it will stop them one way or another. So all the macho crap is bs. Of course 9 mm has more stopping power. But a 44 has more than a 9 mm. And a 50, hey, there's always that thug on angel dust... that is no longer even around. So statistically, not just ballistically, a 380 is appropriate for the job. My Max is always in my pocket, it's like it isn't even there. My neigbor left his 9mm at home cause just going to the gas station... where 4 "teens" with baseball bats attacked him. I have 3 rounds for each before I do a tactical mag change for 10 more. That would be 5 rounds each. See the youtube home invasion videos? How many does the homeowner fire and the invaders ask, hey, what caliber gun are you using. @@TheDarksideFNothing

Not everyone can shoot often, or get to the range regularly, not many are trained to clear “ stovepipes” and jams. Revolvers are simple and easy to learn. The purpose of defensive shooting is to make an attacker go away and quit attacking…any gun that does that is good defense.

Well, if a 380 is used in a place where there are other people, the lack of exiting the target could be a potential benefit. If anything, I would think a lighter grain frangible projectile with a hot loading, would be best on a bad guy not wearing body armor. The idea being, you want to transfer as much energy into the target with minimal over penetration to prevent injuring other bystanders. I think it's fare to say, regardless of caliber, when you start putting holes in someone where they don't belong, they are going to have a very bad day.

I feel it's safe to say from what we have seen here that 380 is fine to carry if the characteristics of the gun meet your needs in a way 9mm models don't. The advantages like reduced recoil or size, etc.

      @@phigdon3 I agree.
Training can overcome a lot of recoil control issues for most people without health concerns, but not everyone has the time, money, interest, or wellness to put in enough range time to accomplish that, and I'd argue that the same training would have even better results with the reduced recoil caliber.
Unfortunately, the micro 380 form factor being notably smaller than what's possible with micro 9mm negates a lot of the benefits of the reduced total energy of the 380 vs 9mm. The tradeoff being that my LCP Max actually leaves the house in my pocket whereas my PF9 often didn't.
But definitely, if you have an identical form factor and your options are 9mm or 380, there can definitely be advantages to going 380.
A bullet on target is significantly more useful than a miss, regardless of caliber.
I'll take a 380 to the torso of my adversary any day over a 45acp into the wall behind them.

@barrydraper indeed. The important takeaway to me is not that 9mm is more lethal, but that 380 is lethal enough.
Of course 9mm is going to do more damage. But if there are key advantages to comfort and concealability offered by a 380 form factor, the fact that it will still be quite highly likely to accomplish the end goal is the important factor.

I was curious about the durability and protective capacity of my boots, and the potency of my BB gun. I cocked, rested my BB gun on top of my right foot w/ the boot on, and pulled the trigger. The pain that rippled through my foot was excruciating. I wasn't running or even walking after any body. Upon inspection I found the BB embedded in the boot leather. Point? Self-defence is statistically going to be close, and getting out of the situation w/ the least amount of damage is the goal. A big part of that is being the guerrilla fighter. Catch your attacker by surprise. Not letting people know your capability. .380 puts us in a category of handguns that are much smaller. Which means many more undetectable carry options. Also, which is mentioned below, not passing through the body is a good thing. You are responsible for every round you discharge. I'm confident if my BB gun was a .380 handgun the round would have gone through the leather and into my foot. If it got through my foot it might well have imbedded in the sole of my boot. I would have fallen to the ground and been taken to the hospital, and been using crutches for a while.

i'm not really that into firearms but this was super enjoyable to watch. Film and editing are spot on. Charlie is absolutely hilarious.

If you're not into firearms, but like videos about them, you're by definition: INTO FIREARMS.

I carry the S&W 380 Body guard without laser. I like it because fully loaded with an extended mag in goes into my pocket without weight or size concerns. Its just easier and because of the size I never leave home without it. Even in Gym Shorts. Tried carrying the 9mm and I was leaving it a home a lot. Never felt right in my pocket and waist carry was uncomfortable. In Florida you dont wear a lot of clothing for concealment. Always in shorts, tshirt and flip flops. If I go into the boat, take road trips or next to my bed I use the 9mm.

I dated an ER Nurse for quite sometime and she told me basically everyone hit with standard calibers (9mm, .45, etc) the bullet passed through and in many instances survived. The real troublesome shots were when bullets didn't pass through, bounced around or were in pieces or caused erratic wound tracks, like .22 LR. She saw, more people die from .22 LR wounds after the fact than 9mm wounds.

Yep very true, worked with 2 large hospital systems most deaths related to gun shot wounds where 22lr, dealers and criminals who shoot larger caliber like 9mm or 223, for the most part use fmj, they go straight through, with 22 the bullet shatters goes all over the place, patients usually deal with infection related to lead intoxication (plumbism) and or neurotoxicity post surgery bullet extraction, if they survived that far into it.

I think that a 9mm is much more energetic on impact than a .22 LR tho, right? I live in Germany, we can't carry any guns here, but if we could I think I'd pick the option that puts a threat down as quickly as possible - after all I wouldnt really care if the shots are lethal, and I'd prefer an incapacitated person that later on survives vs a guy that got hit with a .22 LR, but still managed to kill me because he didn't instantly go down, only to then die in a hospital later on. Idk, maybe these thoughts are completely irrational, after all I never shot a gun, but I'd like to pick the safer option.

@@neothespankplank5839 A 9mm is superior to a 22LR, but since the FBI switched from .40 S&W to 9mm they train their agents to double tap the target. Two rounds of 9mm will mess up anyone this side of an angry bear, sasquatch, etc.

@@neothespankplank5839it's about shot placement sure if your a bad shot a 9mm to the arm is gonna cause more blood loss quickly than a .22lr but holes of any size directly through the chest and into or through the lungs and or heart will immediately make anyone very quickly forget what they where doing and start focusing on making their peace with god

I’m glad y’all made this video because I always wondered how 380 would do in certain situations. For me I think having at least something is better than having nothing in concealed carry situation

And even just any firearm could be life-saving. I am thinking about those .22lr AR-7 or Henry survival rifles that the air force issued to pilots for emergencies if they crashed and got stranded.

@@Adam_Wilde While I believe the AR-7 was meant for hunting bunnies if you had to punch out of your aircraft, the humble .22 has dropped a lot of bad guys. Stay safe. --Old Guy
