Yep, dem's FBI loads. FBI got 10mm loaded so underpowered that Smith & Wesson just went to Winchester to have the cartridge brass shortened and .40S&W was born from that.
There's a pretty good video from 13yrs ago where a guy used pork ribs, a cow's heart and Jello to demonstrate what a Double Tap 135gr does to cardiac tissue. You should be able to find it with 10mm vs Cow's Heart here on YT.
NYPD has entered the chat. According to their "experts" 9mm was defeated by a Carhartt jacket. In reality... it was more than likely trash marksmanship and 15 pound triggers.
I wanted to give a special thank you! I used to carry 9mm (Tisas PX-9), but after your video and some personal testing, I love my Smith and Wesson M&P 10mm. I seem to shoot much better than I do my 9mm. I think it may have to do with the fact that I focus a lot more on trigger and recoil management. I shoot it really well. So well, I ordered an IWB holster for it.
The slow motion of that first 9mm shot that went back into the gel had to be a 1 in a million catch. I've never seen that happen before. The sound effect was a nice touch too. LOL!!!
Seen it happen in a couple vids, I think Kentucky Ballistics maybe caught a couple of those. One of my favorites is when it exits the block with a little puff of smoke and they add a fart sound. I'm pushing 50, and I don't care, that's always going to be funny.
Alaska state troopers and wildlife troopers switched to the 10mm several years ago not only for two legged stopping power, but four legged critters too. It does great damage to a bear and moose.
I'm so glad that 10mm is making its earned comeback. A lot of people have been skeptical over the round, but man is 10mm the best damn handgun round out there.
Glocks look great and plenty of 10mm Glocks. Otoh, 9mm works fine for humans for a summer gun. .40 is good for winter. 10mm is good for bears 👍 Even .380 works if you’re using Defiant TCX, Underwood Sku 152 90 gr jhp +p, or Underwood 68 or 90 gr +p extreme defender. Bonus points if you’re using a 3.5” or longer barrel. .380 is absolutely great in those situations and has less recoil 👍 9mm is fine with many different ammos such as HST (buy it cheap in bulk, do not pay 2$ per round from Federal or big companies) or if you’re willing to pay for the best, also TCX. If you want the best for .40, 135 gr JHP from Underwood (600 foot pounds energy, .357 sig and 10mm level energy) or Hornady Critical Defense, or HST. In that order. Critical defense is bad for .380 and only marginally decent for 9mm. But critical defense is absolutely beastly in .40 S&W.
This is the kind of testing I've been waiting for on 10mm. The numbers (muzzle velocity, mass, muzzle energy) are incredible, but I was always concerned about overpenetration. Seeing how they dump their energy quickly and don't fly supersonic out the back of the target honestly is all i need to know 10mm is best mm
Everyone always freaks out about overpenetration, but I’ve yet to see a confirmed account of a civilian shooting someone in self defense and having overpenetration hurt an innocent. It just doesn’t happen.
@@DurzaHD Springfield does a compact 3.8" version, meant for CCW, that runs an 11+1 mag by default, but also fits 15+1 mags that have a sleeve at the base to extend the grip. I've heard very good things about it.
This is why I've seen multiple people suggest 10mm as a gun for certain wildlife. I've seen a lot on how effective 10mm can be for bears for people who really aren't comfortable or good with revolvers. I kinda knew that meant ballistics for humans were pretty solid too but this was absolutely fantastic to see!
I visited my Daughter in 2019 when she was stationed in Ak. I saw too many people with 10MM chest rigs to count. My Son in Law immediately bought a Glock 10mm when they got there. Overwhelmingly BIG Revolvers (44mag) are still the standard but 10mm were very common from what I was able to observe of folks open carrying just walking around town, going to the store etc.
I live in Idaho (black) bear, cougar, wolf country and confidently carry 10mm here but I carry a 480 Ruger when in Alaska. Guns are like opinions though…plus the 480 in a super red hawk is super fun to shoot. It is to a 44 what the 10mm is to a 9 more or less.
10MM has been fairly popular in the outdoors/hunting community for awhile. It's the go to bear round for most people. It's like a semi auto 357 magnum with a 15 round capacity instead of the 6 in a revolver. I suspect the underwood 180 grain hardcasts I normally carry for bears and cats would zip right through a human torso and not slow down much at all.
As a hunting sidearm, it makes a ton of sense if it's loaded to the potential of 10MM. But for people carrying as personal defense in the cities and suburbs, it's just asking for over penetration trouble. 9mm is enough for anything on two legs not wearing body armor, and by that point you'd need a rifle anyway. Looking at the way that 135 grain performed, it looks almost identical to 45 Super in ballistics gel - dumping a massive amount of energy and stopping in the first 8 inches. 45 Super is a really bizarre cartridge, but I'd rather have that than 10MM for those effects.
People always give me shit for carrying 10mm or 45 Super.. They still swear that its been proven over & over how 9mm is FAR Superior to both & that the FBI has proved this countless times...
@haroldfarquad6886 over penetration trouble? Considering even with trained shooters most 60% or more of handgun rounds fired in a shootout miss entirely. Over penetration is the least of your concerns when there is loose rounds zipping through the air.
Fun fact: Liberty's 60gr 10mm load leaves a 6 inch barrel at around 2500fps and has defeated every kind of 3A armor i've tested it in. As far as "terminal effects", it's done me well, with several one shot stops on big angry hogs
That Liberty ammo doesn't disappoint. It's been my carry round for over 4 years. In most any caliber, it's hard to argue with light and fast for carrying on your hip, but then those terminal ballistics are insane.
Fun story - the day after watching this video I went to the range with a buddy. I’m a barely proficient pistol shot so was working on fundamentals with a buddy. We were taking a short break after hanging new targets and talked about this video. The range went hot and I was going to take a controlled shot - so I was raising the pistol and yelled “COMMUNISM IS BAD” and took a shot and miraculously took a perfect dead center shot on the target. I’m now convinced those words are magic! I wish I could post a pic of the target!
I still have a S & W in Mod.610 stainless Revolver. 6in.Barrel. l can Shoot anything in 10mm in this Gun. It's a Blast to Shoot. It is Exactly the Same as a .41magnum in Power, Velocity, and Ft.lbs.Energy and it's Lethalness. Try it out.
I loved 10mm enough I built a truck gun chambered in it cus... a glock 20 and full power ammo has a significant amount of recoil.. can't go wrong with an AR pistol in 10mm though
This is a problem I've noticed with 7.62 Nagant aswell, with people are calling it anemic (atleast compared to 9mm). The issue there however is that they're using underloaded target shooting rounds.
There is one 9mm cartridge that bests the 10mm, the 9x25 Dillon Underwood 125gr, 1,700fps, 802ft.lbs or 90gr, 2,000fps, 799ft.lbs. Even Underwood's 10mm loads are not that spicy. The bullet diameter matters less than what the bullet does inside the body when it hits watery tissue, most people die of internal bleeding and tissue destruction not exsanguinating through the hole in the skin i.e. caliber does not matter as much as velocity, energy, bullet construction, and did the bullet behave as expected: expand, plug with clothing, disintegrate, pass through w/o expansion, fragment by design (most handgun rounds are not supposed to fragment that was an improper bullet being used in a cartridge with too high a velocity and the bullet disintegrated).
I EDC the M&P 2.0 in 4", heavier recoil and mag springs for reliable full power performance. My absolute favorite carry pistol. Thanks for all you do guys!
@@Hypno_Llama For some reason S&W put a 17-ish pound recoil spring which is too light and what ends up happening is the slide out runs the spring in the magazine causing failure to feed malfunctions. So the best way to fix it is to get a new recoil spring, usually a 22 or 24 pound spring to slow the slide down and replace the magazine spring to make sure the round is picked up and fed in the proper location and time. This issue has come up in about 3/4 of the produced M&Ps. I'm one of the lucky 1/4 that didn't have the issue. Wolf springs have great after market springs.
Favorite carry as well! 4 inch M&P2.0 10mm is a thing of a glory, perfect size to still conceal carry!!!! Upgraded the recoil spring, meaning to upgrade the mag springs too.
I started shooting 10mm a few years ago and instantly became a huge fan. The ammo is more expensive but it's a blast to shoot. The 10mm is a great round for both pistol and PCC. It feels like the 10mm is the closest thing to a rifle round when fired out of a PCC, compared to other rounds fired from a PCC. You're right about a lot of manufacturers selling 10mm that is barely above 40S&W specs. You have to be careful and look at the specs when purchasing 10mm ammo.
@@spacewater7 too bad almost nobody makes guns for those anymore, and for 9 mm largo specifically almost nobody makes ammo for... 30 carbine at least is still made thanks to the popularity of the m1 carbine. with the popularity of PCC's over the past 10ish years i am kinda sad more in 30 carbine haven't been made
I've been shooting 10mm for 40 years now (good lord, did I just write that? I feel old now). I still have one of the first Bren Tens made in my safe, along with one of the very first Delta Elites made. Anyway, a test you didn't make that is worth while is using the 140 grain extreme penetrator going at 1500+ fps against iiia armor
I’m close at 33 years enjoying the 10mm, lol. There’s a video of the 140 XP punching through thin armored glass capable of stopping other handgun cartridges.
That’s great Don but I still haven’t heard back from you about my Miami Vice reboot idea. In this series you and Tubbs not only reside at Geriatric Acres but you’re fighting the out of control crime like speeding golf carts, residents not picking up after their dogs and residents showing up after 5pm at Denny’s and still demanding the early bird special. Get back to me I think we have a winner!
I carry the 155ex defender in dw specialist or 6” trp…I’m the 10mm guy they make fun of till the 135s@1550 come out…then everyone wants to shoot one…big 200xtp max pressure where you’ll find recoil…way more than 180s and below….lemme talk to ya!..👊🏻
That will never happen. You have to be a fairly big and strong guy to fire 10mm fast and accurately. The military is mostly made up of 160-180 lb skinny guys.
@@gandalftheblonde770 that's good. You must lift weights, though. I'm not exactly sure why some people are very apprehensive to recoil, and some aren't. The first handgun I shot was a Smith & Wesson 386 SC "Mountain Lite" AirLight. I was a 7 shot 357 magnum revolver, that literally weighed 18 oz unloaded. I'm a 220 lb powerlifter, and ex collegiate wrestler, so the recoil never bothered me. After about 150 rounds of full power 357 magnum rounds, it does hurt the thumb muscle a bit. I don't think I shot a semiauto handgun until maybe 15 years after I bought that revolver. I was shocked at the light recoil, because I was used to an 18 oz 357 magnum with no gas blowback system to lessen recoil. The 10mm doesn't bother me at all.
@@gandalftheblonde770 I own a 2011 16+1 round 10mm with a 5.5" barrel and a full 1913 dust cover. I forget how much it weighs, but it's pretty damned heavy. The full power 10mm recoil out of that beast, is significantly less than my concealed carry 9mm pistol with +P ammo. It feels like shooting a 22. If people flinch with polymer framed 10mm pistols, a full size all steel beast will work for them. It just might get tiresome to carry around all day.
This was amazing and so fun to watch. Thank you. The showmanship is top notch. It's the little things that pull a chuckle from me, and you guys nailed it. You brightened my otherwise sh*t day.
@The_Devil_Himself thank you brother! That's such a uplifting response. I honestly didn't anticipate it. I wish you and yours all the best! Life is good, way better day today!
Cmmg's 10mm banshee AR pistol is a freight train for home defense and really anything that doesn't need rifle distance. 8 inch barrel sending full power rounds, 30 round magazines, great recoil control with rapid fire groups and a mounted optic.
10 mm was the first gun I ever bought for myself for self-protection. I bought that 30 years ago and still carry a 10 mm. Things to do a lot of hunting and hiking in Bear Country and that was always my backup. Absolutely love it, and he's right you got to make sure which ammunition you're getting otherwise you're not getting the full performance
The 10mm was originally classified as a magnum class round. Looking at current load specs the are well under the first loads energy level. Looking at an early 90’s energy rating it was between the .41 magnum and .44 magnum
There are still a few factory loadings that meet or exceed the original Norma spec. Double tap, Buffalo Bore, and Underwood all do. Sposedly the resurgence of 10mm has caused some of the more mainstream manufacturers to up the 10mm into its intended form. Really to get most out of 10mm you need to hand load. 1400fps at 180 grain 🤯 is completely achievable.
10mm was never between 41 and 44mag. It was the 41mag Winchester silvertip that the 10mm was around the same power as. The 41mag silver tip was extremely watered down. 10mm can't get above 800foot lbs in a handgun. 41 mag can get to 1200. You need 460rowland to get to where 41mag is.
Mitchalvin nails 10mm to the tee… most don’t know Jack about 10mm and only know the OTC FBI lite that yes, is not much more than .40, however! True 10mm loads like Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Double Tab, and Sig Sauer, make full potential loads, which is what I shoot in my G-20😎👍🏽
I have been a 45acp guy for ever. I picked up a Springfield XDM for when in bear country. You can really tell the deference in the power of the 10mm full loads.
A 45 ACP "Bear Load" has capacity of being significantly more capable than a 10mm Auto "Bear Load." Greater amount of bullet weight for similar velocities, larger meplat, heavier bullet need not be seated deeper with attendant over-pressure concerns.
@@LibertysetsquareJackfor big browns , the faster speed of the 10mm , with similar bullet size is always going to equate to better penetration . There’s been so many tests done , and all say the same - 10mm is a better bear defense round than .45
@@LibertysetsquareJackalso will add underwood offers a 200gr bear defense round for both calibers . 10mm has significant more velocity and muzzle energy . I’m guessing you’re referring to someone’s “custom” bear load , that’s probably over pressured and possibly beyond safe specs . We’re talking about a less aerodynamic projectile in the same weight class but is 5.06 mm wider . Under2/10 of an inch but is also a much different shape and is seated completely different . The misconception here is that the 45 is gonna leave a larger wound channel . It will also under penetrate and with a 1200 lb apex predator , if it expands early “not enough speed so more often than not that’s the case “ , you’ll be on the menu for North Americas deadliest animal .
@@dennismurray4088 It's not about leaving a bigger wound channel, but about the tendency of the bullet to overturn itself, be deflected, and lose momentum. All three contribute to diminished penetration. Velocity is only one factor in penetration, and, especially at practical handgun velocities, is largely insignificant. In other words, we aren't talking the difference between 800 fps and 2,300 fps, pistol and rifle, respectively, or between a 600 fps pistol round and a 1,300 fps pistol round. When we're talking between, say, 1,150 fps for one pistol round, and 950 fps for another pistol round, both velocities factor essentially identically when it comes to penetrative potential into animals. What is more significant are the other factors aforementioned: which bullet will have a greater tendency to overturn itself, have less momentum, and be deflected from striking differential material in the body, e.g. glancing on a bone. With those three considerations, bullets with larger meplats, sharper meplats, more "square" bullet profile (ogive), are "over square" in weight:caliber ratio, and just weigh more overall, will tend to penetrate both 1) more deeply initially, and 2) be less likely to deflect and/or tumble, i.e. maintain a more straight terminal path, which means deeper penetration over time within the animal. If favorable characteristics of pistol bullet P are found over another, Q, in these areas, P will have deeper and more consistent penetration, even if Q is moving up to several hundred feet-per-second faster. That's why the old timers, such as John Pondoro Taylor, accounted for caliber when evaluating cartridges for animals, in addition to bullet weight and velocity. Muzzle energy equations only take bullet weight and velocity into factor, and are then heavily biased towards velocity, because the equation has the square of such. This makes cartridges such as 10mm Auto look superior to others, but without context and the actual terminal behavior of the bullet. So take two premier "dangerous game" loads from the same manufacturer, Buffalo Bore, as example: 10mm Auto "Heavy 10mm Outdoorsman," and the 45 ACP "Heavy 45 +P Outdoorsman." In terms of muzzle energy, the 10mm Auto loading sees a 220 grain bullet developing 1,175 fps out of a Colt Delta Elite with a 5" barrel, yielding ~674 ft./lbs. The 45 ACP load sees a 255 grain bullet developing 960 fps out of a Colt Gold Cup with a 5" barrel, yielding ~522 ft./lbs. So the 10mm Auto loading is 152 ft./lbs., or just over 29%, more powerful. Looking to the Taylor Knockout factor (TKO) however, we get different evaluation. TKO is [bullet weight in grains × velocity × caliber] divided by 7,000. This yields a TKO of 14.77 for the 10mm Auto load, but 15.81 for the 45 ACP. The 45 in this equation is a clear and entire ordinal higher. Comparisons only get more lopsided when evaluating the very high velocity 10mm Auto cartridges many people posture as specifically for large animal defense, such as those using the solid copper (SC) or "mono metal" bullets. The high velocities are obtained with very light bullets, such as a 115 grain SC bullet going 1,700 fps. That yields an impressive 738 ft./lbs. However, that's only 11.17 on the TKO scale, far less than the 15 to 16 of 45 loads. Even old-school 45 ACP from 1905 (230 grains at 830 fps) yields a TKO of 12.33. Again, the reason weight, caliber and weight:caliber were accounted in the old days, and still should be today, is because bullets can do things that negate penetration, irrespective of relatively higher velocity. One of those things is the tendency for the rear of the bullet to "overtake" the front of the bullet, particularly if the bullet is heavier at the base, resulting in tumbling or at least veering from a straight path, both of which cut penetration depth. Another is deflection, which is where large meplat bullets and "square" ("short and fat") have an advantage over round nose and smaller meplat bullets, or bullets that are relatively "under square" ("skinnier"). Ironically enough, higher velocities can also exacerbate these tendencies, such as producing tumbling earlier or deflecting to a larger proportion of vector. Autoloading pistols are already at a disadvantage relative to revolvers in these regards because cartridge OAL must necessarily be shorter per given caliber, dictated by magazine dimensions and action lengths. Autoloaders must also reliably feed over a ramp of some type, and headspace differently than revolvers, meaning that bullet profiles are accordingly less able to be truncated, have less sharp meplats, and must taper sharper from base to nose, more akin to a RN, as opposed to a true SWC or FP profile. The advantage of something such as 45 ACP versus 10mm Auto, is that, within these and other limitations of the autoloading design, the 45 can have a relatively large meplat, less taper to the profile, and be heavier for caliber at acceptable pressures, relative to the 10mm, because the 45 ACP cartridge is designed to sit heavier bullets at lower pressures and is a clear five (5) calibers bigger, meaning larger diameter and ~ 27% greater circular area, yet is not considerably longer. So a heavier, broader, "over square" bullet at functionally similar (i.e. adequate) velocities, and with more meplat and ogive potential. Again, not as much potential in absolute terms as a cartridge designed for a revolver or lever action, but relatively speaking, as an autoloading pistol cartridge, more than the 10mm Auto. And the overall dimension of the pistol is not too disimilar either. It's not like we're talking about a .357 Desert Eagle or something. A Glock 21 still has 13+1 capacity as standard, for example, and with a "normal" sized frame. So I think the mystical or magical aura surrounding 10mm Auto pistols is overblown. Regardless, you went on in your comment to talk about expansion, and in the context of '1,200 pound apex predators.' Really though, it is kinda silly to be talking about bullet expansion potential from pistols, especially from autoloader pistol cartridges, and within the context of taking on large animals, let alone those c. 1,200 pounds. It is going to require several feet worth of straight-line penetration to serve as defense against such animals, and at pistol velocities especially, this means expanding bullets are not ideal at all. Bullets should be made for such purposes so as to have minimal deformation, and maximum weight for caliber at an adequate velocity. A full powered rifle or a shotgun with slugs is really what is in order for such situations, and the pistol is a sidearm. The danger with 10mm Auto pistols is that people are often treating them as a sort of primary weapon against large, dangerous animals, with magical properties. The mono-metal bullets for 10mm Auto in particular seem to have magical qualities ascribed to them, by virtue of being shot out of 10mm Auto pistols, "because velocity and muzzle energy." The idea seems to be that they combine hard bullet material and high velocity, for penetration, with "expansion"-esque terminal performance because of "fluid energy transfer" or whatever, from the fluted design. In reality, these bullets attain higher velocities with the trade off of very light bullet weight, i.e. 115 to 135 grains. On the other side of the coin, the heavier mono-metal bullets move much slower, e.g. a 190 grain 10mm Auto mono-metal is going to be going only 1,100 fps out of a typical (4.5/4.6") barrel, not 1,400, or 1,500, or 1,600+ fps like people want to think. The mono-metals actually will develop less velocity per a given weight because they must be seated deeper relative to a lead bullet (lead is more dense) to stay within OAL (which gets back to the limitations with autoloaders), which is largely why the very fast mono-metals in 10mm Auto are so small (c. 120 grains). Anyway, in both cases, whether tiny and fast or "heavy" (i.e. still light in real terms) and much slower, it apparently escapes people's attention that the "fluid transfer mechanism" is also going to impart force onto the bullet. In other words, there is reaction to every action: people are so in awe of the idea of the fluted bullet "transferring energy into the surrounding tissue" that they forget that the bullet is having a resultant force acting on it too. There is no such thing as free energy. In simple terms, it means the bullet is bleeding out energy and, thus, penetration potential once inside the animal. To get a given mono-metal-fluted to penetrate deeply, velocity must indeed be very high. But again, given the inherent limitations of the autoloading pistol cartridge dimension, that means very light bullets, which are then marginal in terms of all the other factors mentioned so far. So what exactly is all the excitement about? Beats me. I guess if such a thing as a magical bullet existed, I'd be excited to hear of it too; but in terms of actual physics, there is a reason that "magic bullets" are called such: because they exist in a fanciful sense, not in reality. Come to think of it, that's probably why the manufacturers refer to such bullets as "Fluid Transfer Monolithic." If they called it "Energy Transfer Monolithic," then every Good Ol Boy would be saying, "wait uh min'uht...if energy is bein' transferred out, don't that mean the boolit is losin' a lot uh energy in dat critter? Penetration gonna be shallow." Lol, yes.
I'm one of those guys who believe the 45 (pound-for-pound) is a better cartridge as you have explained in detail. I have always believed too the 10mm has been over-hyped for marketing purposes and the FBI had it right all along.@@LibertysetsquareJack
So I’m in the middle of the video and I’m getting the vibe that he’s trying to see if 10mm has more value than a 9mm and i like the comparison. One thing I hope is brought up is it’s value at being a cartridge that is practical for self defense against both humans and dangerous game. Many rural Americans choose a 10mm because it is more capable of engaging things like bear and moose where it’s increased energy is important for 700-1000lb animals.
In my experience, most new 10mm pistols ship with a 19 to 20 pound recoil spring. I install a 22 pound in all my 10mm sidearms. Makes them much more controllable.
The 22 lb springs were having issues cycling range ammo. One of the fun parts of having a 10 was you could use cheaper 40 cal as range ammo, back when 40 was cheaper.
I am a reloader. I shoot only full power. The underwood 135 gr hollowpoints are starting point for me, then I get the projectiles from nosler to load my own. I also do 150gr extreme pen, and 140 gr extreme defense from lehigh. I then use 140 grain berries plated for practice. All full power. And no malfuctions.
Spent the first 5 years of my career carrying a .40 Glock 22; then switched to 9mm because it was easier to shoot and the ballistics had pretty much caught up with the 40 and 45 (within 92%, but offered more rounds for "hits on target". 4 years ago my department flushed all of their .40's and bought new Glock 9's for everyone (I carry an M&P Performance Center and have been carrying 9's for 15 years). That said, I do have a Performance Center 10mm for "bears" and such when I'm hiking. Don't underestimate a good 9mm round. I carry 200 grain Underwood hard cast for my 10mm when I'm in the woods.
I literally just got my first handgun last week (I’ve shot a few handguns just didn’t own one myself) and it was a 10mm S&W M&P 2.0 4 inch barrel. It has been my carry since then and I’ve taken it to the range as well and put some underwood 180 jhp through it, ran like champ. Absolutely loved it. I knew it was a powerful gun and I knew which companies make the best ammo for it, but what I didn’t know or couldn’t find was a ballistic dummy test as to get an approximation on what it would do in a self defense situation. Needless to say, I’m not disappointed in a single aspect of my purchase.
@@unitedwestanddividedwefall3521 I have had very very few problems with mine. I had a couple failure to feed issues with some magtech ammo when it was very cold outside but I haven’t had any problems ever since. Love mine and it’s the handgun I’m the most accurate with oddly enough.
One of my co-workers helped with the Development of the Bren 10. As he related, the original ammo for the Bren was the most powerful 10mm load ever done for a 10mm firearm and was a direct reason for some of it's reliability issues. Every load since then has been weaker in strength.
@@HKBuilderDIY If memory serves me correctly, the Norma Ammunition AB (Sweden) 200gr was the only bullet out there at the time (circa 1983...although Sierra made the 10mm prototypes with Mike Dixon and Jeff Cooper's input, they didn't do full scale production)...I don't think though, that it's the same as Norma's current offerings.
@@HKBuilderDIY The original intended loading was 200gr at 1,200 fps. Double Tap offers a load that slightly edges out said spec out of a 5" barrel with a JHP. The account is right in the sense normally available 10mm is well under spec, but wrong in the sense a few relatively boutique vendors offer rounds that meet or exceed the OG spec.
I love the intro, it's so silly and mr GarandThumb is a bit seriousso the contrast is very good. Loved the video btw, always good to reduce dummies to atoms.
Been carrying a 10mm with underwood 180 grain xtp’s and was about to switch over to carrying a 9mm g45. For about 2 years I’ve been wanting to see a ballistic dummy test with 10mm, Safe to say I’m impressed and sticking with the 10mm
@@smithsmithersen1646i see your point but not everybody is bothered by recoil or anticipates it to the point they flinch and miss thier first shot. They key to achieving that is when training, take enough time to Make Every Shot Count. With enough practice, the speed will come with muscle memory. Conversely, just pulling the trigger a bunch of times and hoping you get on target is not proper training, and just reinforces bad practices. The nice thing about training like I suggested is that is that it uses less ammo (at least till you get really good)- no reason to burn more ammo than necessary to practice hitting exactly where you want to. If you can't afford to train or don't have the time, then yeah, 9mm is your answer especially if you think about recoil when you shoot. Anyway, thats just my take, everybody's different when it comes to when that bang happens.
Love the 10mm. Next time would be awesome see the underwood 115gr xtreme defenders, they are totally insane. Monolithic copper bullets going 1700fps. Also some dangerous game loads, +p hard cast 200 or 220gr. would be interesting to see on the ballistic dummy!
I also carry that 115 underwood ammo. Screams like a rifle around. For the countryside I carry 200 gr. buffalo bore. Perfect counter measure for Large mammals confused about the food chain
@@morgatron4639 yeah probably would smoke through a human thorso without dumping as much energy as an xtreme defender or conventional hollow point. Still would be fun to see for science purposes lol
I've been highly fascinated with this round after Kentucky Ballistics compared shooting a 10mm and a .44 mag into ballistics gell. The .44 will create a larger wound channel, but the 10mm zips through more gel, which is insanely impressive.
We're all just super impressed also that he didn't have to stick an index finger into a 10mm auto hole anywhere on his person . Good job bud ! You're _learning_ ! Like a real boy !
I've been watching GT for a long time now and it's funny to see the evolution of Mike in the beginning he was clean cut and normal build now he looks big af and all tatted out can't wait to see what you look like in another few years love everything you do keep it up
I am glad you finally did a video on 10mm and specifically the S&W M&P10. It's one of my favorite pistols I've shot and fell in love with it after a few magazines and adjusted to the recoil but it's an amazing pistol and round.
Great choice with that 1911. I own a Springfield Armory XDM Elite OSP 3.8 in 10mm. My buddy says that possibly the only 10mm owner in my suburban area. Lol
The nasty thing about point blank shots, is that it's not just the bullet doing the damage...The bullet makes the hole, all that gas EXPANDING right behind it, fills and pressurizes the hole/cavity the bullet has made and blows it out that much worse
One of my most profoundly held hopes is that one day, a majority of gun folk will understand what "point blank" range means. For a middlin' warm 10mm load with a 12" target zone, it'll be 'round 125-150 yards.
You have no idea how happy it makes me to see you use the s&w m&p 2.0 for testing since most people default to the Glock 20. Also it makes me happy because that is my daily carry. I live in bear country
My first handgun was an FN 510 with 200 grain, grain bonded flat nose ammo. Everything else since feels like shooting marshmallows. The 10mm is still my EDC (although impractical for most urban uses in civilian life). The reason I went with 10mm as my first handgun is because I wanted something that could protect me in an urban environment and in bear country. Consequences be damned, I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. I carry my 10mm everywhere. Doesn't matter where I'm going. Been kicked out of a couple places because I carry a fullsize handgun and I'm a thinner dude, so it prints sometimes. That being said, that's one reason winter is awesome. 😃
@@jason200912 Doesn't matter what places and why, they just felt uncomfortable with someone having firearms in their establishment. As a business owner, that is their right. I won't argue with them. I'd be infringing on their rights if I did even if I don't agree with their logic.

Don't wait to get better, start doing things now. Two years ago I got so sick I could barely take a shower and couldn't walk around the block for two months. I decided that I would do everything I could where I was at, and I started pushing myself to the max. Which was not much, I couldn't walk a half mile without stopping and feeling like I was going to pass out. I really believe that if I hadn't pushed myself then, I never would have recovered.
Yeah I got coof earlier this month and barely ate anything for a week and a half and lost 10 fricking pounds, that took me all gd year to get in the first place. It's tough when you're a natural skinny and have a super low appetite. I was able to gain 35 lbs in 2020 when I started lifting, to get me to a point most guys START at lol. FML
Man i hear ya! Had back surgery just over a year ago and still down about 35 lbs! Used to be 225 at 12% body fat. Haven't been this skinny since i was 14!
@@noyea1709 Yeah man I dunno about you but I'm the opposite of almost everyone, it's as hard for me to gain it as it is for others to lose it. I just don't have much of an appetite, don't eat a lot when I do, eat slow. I can get up at 830 for work and go all day working (5 pm) without eating or even thinking about it. I have to force myself. If I could just gain like 20 more pounds from where I am right now I'd be happy. I just need to eat more during the day but it's just tough, like I said I have to remind and force myself constantly, it's just not natural for me. The only way I've been able to gain the 35 lbs i did was drinking the calories; I make epic like 1800 calorie shakes every night lol.
Its enjoyable to see the 10mm presented so nicely. I remember the dark days when only the Bren 10 and Colt Delta 10 was available. Then came along the Witness, Glock and 610 (not in that order) It was a fun time to be a reloader where 200x1200 fps was the goal. 800X and SR4756 where your friends as a loader then Longshot came along and took off. Over the last say 20 years we have so many boutique companies creating great ammo for 10mm like DoubleTap or Buffalo Bore make it tough to beat the power level as a reloader, but we can get close and now it seems like everyone has a 10mm Auto firearms available. It is a great time to love the 10mm! Excellent video and thanks for the review.
I got myself one of these M&P Performance Center 10mm and really love it so much, so imagine my excitement to see GarandThumb use it in a 10mm video😊 Hell yeah, brother!
165 grain gold dot is my favorite for the 10mm in defensive vs humans. Four legged predators, of the large bear format, you may want 200 grain hard cast lead.
Underwood 10 mm 115grain solid copper at rated 1700 fps. It tested at average 1730 for me. For unruly critters. Same mag loaded in 40 for 2 legged critters. Light load 200 grain between 1.125 and 1.250 overall length😁. In same 10mm firearm. The extractor holds round in place
First time watching, love your two's style and info. Just ordered a RIA Ultra FS HC, 16+1 with two mags 49 rounds, woo hoo! Going to walk out distances, 10 yards at a time, and see what kind of range it has. Love 10's, have a couple Glocks, just a good round.
Stoked on this video. I just got an FN 510 MRD a few days ago and it shoots great. Definitely took a couple days of dumping mags to get used to her, but it really feels great once you get the hang of it. Tried several different types of ammo, including a box of 200 grain bear loads that pack some serious recoil 😅
I requested this video a year ago and I’m and finally getting to see the review 🙌🏼 10mm is awesome. Just got a FN 10mm tactical. What I like about 10 mil is that you can get medium power loads or the supped up magnum level power 10mm loads. I’m glad to see 10mm making a comeback and people really realizing what it is.
I carry a Glock 29 and recently added the 135gr underwood ammo as my carry ammo after having carried it with black talons for years- the underwood is spicy and devastating for sure!
I decided on the 10mm for hiking / truck carry here in NW Montana. 15 rounds of 10mm in Griz country gives me better odds on the food chain if I get the drop. Thx for the great content Gents!
My first duty carry as a security guard officer is an M&P 2.0 10mm with no external safety and a 4.625 inch long barrel. I love it. Qualified at the shooting range to carry on armed guard duty.
What state???? 10mm is a no-go for Armed Security in Florida. Not even .357 magnum!! I love the full size 10mm Glock. Going to buy one for myself. And external safeties are for would-be gunshot victims ( good guys who go to return fire with their safety ON). There is a reason that most LE insist on NOT having a manual safety on their duty sidearms. The US Military, however, needs manual safeties on sidearms because bored, young soldiers, Marines Airmen, Sailors etc like to fiddle with their guns.
@@noneyabusiness3253 Yes! I will explain. But first let me tell you that for a supposedly conservative state, Florida has WAY too many bogus laws that protect criminals over law abiding citizens. Armed and unarmed security are HOBBLED by a myriad of terrible laws designed to coddle and protect the bad guys and RUIN the lives of Security officers should they go against the Liberal Agenda. I could speak for hours how my first security job in LOSS PREVENTION was the worst job in my life because of laws that favored ONLY the criminals. When my Florida armed G license finally came six weeks later, I dropped the Loss Prevention job, NEVER to return to it!!! We can only carry guns we have personally qualified with at a shooting range under the auspices of a K license (instructor) holder. We can carry a .357 Magnum, but ONLY when loaded with .38 specials. Never a magnum round. The ONLY other calibers we can qualify with and carry are: 9mm Parabellum, .380 ACP, .45 ACP, and .40 caliber. NO 10mm, EVER! What a crock of BS. Getting caught breaking these laws can ruin your life. While the worst scum of the earth is coddled and protected. It is so bad, I am leaving the security field. I understand it is even worse in fake states like Kommifornia, but way better in true conservative states. Florida LOOKS like a Red state, but we have HUGE populations of Blue DemonRats around every major city, including Tallahassee where laws are made. Broward (Fort Lauderdale, where I live), Dade(Miami), and West Palm Beach counties are SOLID BLUE DemonRat run. The population is DOMINATED by voters who just want "free shit" and don't want to be held accountable for most crimes. The Demographics are so bad now, I am moving West to Utah, Wyoming, Dakotas, Idaho etc. Thirty foot RV with my two motorcycles in a garage in the back. Bye bye Florida. I stuck with you for 30 years. Even Ron DeSantis cant change the demographics.
As a hunter and fly fisherman in the West, if I'm outdoors I'm carrying my S&W 2.0. With the right backstrap installed it's very controllable, and there's a lot to be said for a handgun of this power that comes red dot and flashlight ready. It's enough gun for anything while being incredibly easy to shoot compared to revolvers or Deagles. If I could only own one handgun it'd be this one. Very grab and go without much to think about, especially with the 1,000 lumen light on it. Just does what I need it to.
I would actually love to see a video showing the differences of, and reviewing the pros and cons of carrying a full-power 10mm, .45 ACP, and a .357 Magnum/.357 SIG because I've always had a bit of an internal debate with myself about it; so being able to look at some hard data on it would be very insightful.
I agree that it would be informative, but one of these is not like the others. Rather than 45 ACP, I'd say 44 mag. Still a "for giggles" comparison, but at least it'd be in the same league.
.44 magnum is on a whole nother plane of existence to both of them. 10mm is great in terms of auto rounds, but studying ballistics data and numbers .44mag is stronger by a large margin then all of them.
Bought a 1911 in 10mm awhile back. Noticeable recoil difference, but not unpleasant, just more muzzle rise. Very fun gun. I need either the Smith or Glock in 10mm for carry. I hear a lot of people have gone to 10mm for bear guns too. Old enough to remember the Miami Vice Bren Ten.
I have a g20 gen 3 with a compensator it's nice but if you have a comp you need to make sure the grain is enough to cycle I've had issues where some 10mm auto isn't powerful enough to cycle it. Likely cause it's cheap and underpowered.
@user-ty6lt8xp8t I have three 15 rnd mags two of which have plus 2 extensions so with one in the chamber and full mags I have 50 rnds on my person at one time
Thanks a lot, guys! I was seriously thinking about buying a 10mm, but had almost talked myself out of it. Thanks to you, It looks like I'm spending more money on ammo in the very near future. I parked my .40 in the safe several years ago, but held on to it because of the sheer multitudes of ammo I have for it. I started carrying 9mm because it was cheaper to feed, actually allowing for more practice.
There's still time to continue your previous train of thought. Very few people "need" a 10mm. If you more disposable income than you know what to do with, by all means.
They're both nice caliber, idk if they make any small 10mm for conceal carry, but they make tons of 9mm for that an like you said the ammo is cheaper an easier to keep on target, they're both proven man stoppers too most people go down in just a few bullets 3 or less usually definitely less with 10mm but if you look around especially on less savory websites, you see alot of people killed with 9mm or 45s an it don't take much shooting unless they totally bungle the hit.
Congrats, ya'll just got your man cards endorsed, thx for joining the real mans club. Been a 10mm fanboy since the early 80's when Col. Cooper invented it. An I have 3 of them that I practice with, 2 glocks an a 1911 to boot. Looking to add more of them to the stable to. 10mm is my winter carry, an 9mm is my summer carry. If I had to go to war an defend my life on a battlefield, you can bet a 10mm would be on my side. Even .380 works if you’re using Defiant TCX, Underwood Sku 152 90 gr jhp +p, or Underwood 68 or 90 gr +p extreme defender.
9mm in aprticular is known for overpenetration. this is one of the reasons the FBI came out with .40@@haroldfarquad6886

3:32 I am so glad you mentioned this point. I see a lot of 10 vs 9mm comparisons where they basically just compare a 9mm to a 40sw

Just got one literally yesterday.. same one as you!! M2.0 10mm... beast of a gun!!

But there's 9 Largo and .30 Carbine.
@@spacewater7 too bad almost nobody makes guns for those anymore, and for 9 mm largo specifically almost nobody makes ammo for... 30 carbine at least is still made thanks to the popularity of the m1 carbine.

Ok let’s walk that one back. 9mm didn’t perform terribly, the fbi performed terribly.

So take two premier "dangerous game" loads from the same manufacturer, Buffalo Bore, as example: 10mm Auto "Heavy 10mm Outdoorsman," and the 45 ACP "Heavy 45 +P Outdoorsman."
In terms of muzzle energy, the 10mm Auto loading sees a 220 grain bullet developing 1,175 fps out of a Colt Delta Elite with a 5" barrel, yielding ~674 ft./lbs.

What places and what did they say to get you out
I am also invested
@@jason200912 Doesn't matter what places and why, they just felt uncomfortable with someone having firearms in their establishment. As a business owner, that is their right. I won't argue with them. I'd be infringing on their rights if I did even if I don't agree with their logic.
What state do you live in? Here in cali, 10mm is kind of rare due to our handgun roster

I absolutely love my S&W 10mm! It’s been an amazing pistol! This was an awesome video!!
did you get the 4inch barrel? i want to get it in the fde color way but ive heard mixed stuff about it & that the smaller barrel seems to have several duds
@@Miguel-dl3pp just get the 5.6 performance 10mm s&w, less recoil and easier handling
@@saintskillerdntfkwth is it that much better with the ballistics and accuracy? i might end up getting that one honestly its just i like the fde color on the smith. but if its that much better ill get the comp one
Thank you Doctor Grandthumb! Love your content. Keep it up and stay rugged!
Loved the dad advice!! Been trying to put more muscle on the past couple months but I got sick recently and I'm still trying to get over it, but I have big plans for after I do. Get strong my dudes.
@@clamum9648I feel that bro keep pushing 💪
Wow Mike, great moves, keep it up, proud of you
Lol thanks Michelle

Great round! Carried 10mm every day while in Alaska. You should rest how much further you can shoot 10mm accurately.
165 grain gold dot is my favorite for the 10mm in defensive vs humans. Four legged predators, of the large bear format, you may want 200 grain hard cast lead.
Thank God here in Indiana I don't have to worry about bears. 😆
225 grain hard cast underwood
@@stevenpostorino2755 😮 I bet that's pretty spicy
The RPG 7 is more effective against all apex predators & bank vault doors, so I heard!.
About time for a 10mm video! You definitely have to test out some of the xtreme series projectiles on those dummies!
Love the graeme barret clip you added. That guy is an absolute legend!
I requested this video a year ago and I’m and finally getting to see the review 🙌🏼 10mm is awesome. Just got a FN 10mm tactical. What I like about 10 mil is that you can get medium power loads or the supped up magnum level power 10mm loads. I’m glad to see 10mm making a comeback and people really realizing what it is.
you guys somehow make an amazing original intro every video and its the only channel on YT i watch them on. Love the content!
Damn 10mm was super impressive. Train regularly and dry fire daily. 👌🏼 Great episode guys!
@@imcacklinghere8693why is it a no go in Florida? Do they limit calibers with the licences for security or something?
It was not listed but I can use 40 S&W in it so it passes. Apex makes a Failure Resistant extractor that adds reliability.

Yes!
Those poses during the slo-mo with the 9mm had me cracking up haha awesome video its always interesting to see what these different rounds do
As a hunter and fly fisherman in the West, if I'm outdoors I'm carrying my S&W 2.0.
Yeah, that's fair. They're definitely very different animals.
10mm was designed around .357. Very similar ballistics.
.44 magnum is on a whole nother plane of existence to both of them. 10mm is great in terms of auto rounds, but studying ballistics data and numbers .44mag is stronger by a large margin then all of them.
@wes4465 yeah, 44 mag is on another level. 44 mag semi auto options are also scant and massive in physical size.
Likely cause it's cheap and underpowered.
bear gun for sure. 10mm with some hard casts with the extra mag capacity can’t really be beat.
@user-ty6lt8xp8t I have three 15 rnd mags two of which have plus 2 extensions so with one in the chamber and full mags I have 50 rnds on my person at one time
Dang it! Now I’m shopping for a G20….. blue label price is pretty good though.
@ghettomedic9971 I don't know how it'll run for you with ammo brands. But I've never jammed on my g20 but I load my own hot 10mm
Me, too! I may have to get a 10mm now to get some power in a pistol.
Sell your .40 and .40sw ammo for more money towards your 10mm and ammo.
Cool study and thanks for showing how much of a deadly ammo 10mm is.
Colion Noir doing a review of the FN 510 and Sig coming out with a 10mm P320 has me eyeing this caliber lately, so this video was well-timed.
