My thumbs were having serious nerve problems after a repetitive strain injury. I had to get a .22 LCP. I definitely don't regret it. I like to try out different ammo in .22LR because very few people consider it for defense and they can't seem to comprehend that sometimes your hands can be messed up enough that you need to be able to safet run something without your thumbs, which is a massive challenge with anything more than .22LR for most people. There's the EZ 380 but if your thumb gets stuck down like mine would the grip safety will give you issues.
If you ever have to extract a dud round, be sure to grip the LCP22 by the extractor and squeeze it while racking the slide. Most LCP22s can't extract unfired cartridges from the chamber while loaded or with a mag in the gun due to a very badly designed extractor. Be sure to check if you have one of the rare ones that can extract, because if yours can't, you won't be able to do a tap-rack-bang unless you give the extractor a good squeeze while racking.

Fascinating test, Sam.👍 Useful data here. Of course, with any autoloader it’s reliability that comes first. But assuming one’s gun will run both well, you’ve given us real help in choosing.
I think they publish their rated velocity the same way the auto manufacturers calculate EV range. 🤪 Probably going to need a 24-inch barrel and bolt action to get their ratings. Only other loads I know of that are "hot" .22LR are Winchester Super-X Hyper Velocity 40gr, and Remington Viper 36gr (1410 fps). Remington just released a new load called "Ranch Hand" and it's 38gr rated for 1340 fps. Edit: After some research, found some more hot rounds: Browning BPR #B194122100 40gr 1435 fps. Remington Viper #21239 36gr 1410 fps.
Heck yeah! Glad to see these being tested and out of both barrel lengths. I recently purchased a new 10/22 and a Henry survival rifle and the Henry in particular says to use high/hyper velocity ammo in it. To my surprise, both of these rounds perform incredibly well out of both rifles both in terms of reliability and accuracy. Happy to see the velocity and gel tests.
Thanks for your genuine ammo tests, Sam! Had kind of an unwarranted aggressive response from one of the other channels that tests ammo frequently, all because of a genuine question I had. Your tests have always been A+++ and provide informative responses. Much appreciated. Would you ever consider testing the CCI subsonic hollowpoints and segmenting hollowpoints? I've had good luck with them, as well as the CCI quiet 22 semi-auto, but I'd be curious to see them in your tests!
Thanks for watching. Yes, I probably will at some point test all that stuff. Was looking last night at Winchester subsonic 42 gr ammo, some of their HV segmenting and CCI's version. It's realistically why I got this rifle, as it cost about $80 to $100 to do a single video the way I normally do, but rifle VS pistol in .22 LR I can do for less than 20 bucks. BTW I try not to be aggressive towards people, the only time I ever am is when people start off by asking questions like "this guy's an idiot" or "flawed test, redo it". As long as people are nice about the way the comment, I am all for them saying anything. Like when I have something negative to say I will do it differently on other people's channels. Like I once was like "I really like the test.....but, just a note if you snap that cylinder closed enough you won't have that cylinder stop anymore" as opposed to how trolls often will say things like "this guy has never handled a revolver before, idiot". As a fan of CCI ammo, I'm a little disappointed that they didn't perform better than Aguila. I've always though of Aguila as the cheap ammo I grab at the range to save a little money. My current EDC uses 380 auto, but if I was carrying 22LR, I would be considering the Interceptors after seeing this. Speaking of rifle barrel length, I'd love to someday see someone do a test of 22LR at 16" 18" and 22" barrels to see if it really makes a difference. My own 22LR rifle has a 24" barrel, but it's a 60's rifle so they probably didn't consider that kind of thing as much back then.
My 1911-22 is loaded next to my bed with Interceptor 22's my range test at 25 yards fiund it fed better and was more accurate than the velocitors. Keep the 22 video's comming friend.
Waaayyy back in the day,I ccw'ed a S+W mod.34 with a 2 in. bbl and loaded w/Yellow Jackets. My reasoning was it was shoulder stablized and therefore would penetrate better than roundnose or hollow point .22 lr ammo. Mind you, this was approximately 45 years ago. Plus it was far better than the. 25 acp Raven (the only other ccw friendly firearm that I had).My Raven was extremely reliable and had "minute of bad guy angle of accuracy "LOL!
The interceptor I’ve bought has some serious issues with bulging the rim convex and actually blowing holes in the rim on occasion, several boxes out of several firearms, both rifle and pistol and revolver, as well as my friends rifle, I’ve talked to others with this issue and I’m gonna contact Aguilla with the cases etc.
The Intercepters definitely crack louder on camera too. Also heard a couple ‘hotter’ ones on that rifle string! Never knew my Velocitors were that far below the rating but oh well, still love ‘em!
Nice Gun Sam, I havent kept up with 22LR stuff so this is nice new info. I do love my Taurus TX22 , My 1st Taurus and a great pistola! Ill have to pick up some Aguila Velocitor, I have been keeping CCI mostly and it has been fine thru most anything but a bit more from a pistol is a bit more! Thanks GS.
Banana Ballistics recently tested a wide selection of 22LR rounds out of a T/C R22 16" carbine and Ruger 22/45 with a 4.4 barrel. The Aguila 40 grain Interceptor averaged 1535 FPS (209 ft/lbs) and 1252 FPS, respectively, making it the hottest load. The fastest load was the 30 grain Aguila Supermaximum which managed 1624 FPS (175 ft/lbs) and 1340 FPS.
There's definitely something wrong with that 1,535 FPS. Not saying he didn't get that if he has some special firearm, but I never heard of anyone else getting anything even close to that.
@@GunSam No two chronographs agree. Other potential factors can include tightness of the bore and location of the chronograph. Even temperature and humidity can affect velocity. He got high readings with some other loads as well, but I don't know which of you has the most accurate data.
@@Paladin1873 It's probably a correct number. I am just hinting to the fact it's a Thompson, and that definitely could change things up because of the quality. I don't think most rifles, even 10/22's can match that. Reminds me of when I got my 3" Ruger LCRx in .22 WMR. I ran several back to back chronograph reads with various ammo in the 3" LCRx and 4.75" Heritage Rough Rider. Even though the LCRx has a barrel 1.75" shorter, it had velocities HUNDREDS of FPS faster than the Heritage.
@@GunSam Looks like you may have a new topic for review, comparing the velocities of different handguns of similar barrel lengths and identical calibers. If you decide to run such a test, I suggest you use a set of feeler gauges to check the barrel-to-cylinder gap of your revolvers. A wide gap can have a greater negative effect on velocity than how well the bores are cut.
@@GunSam Weatherby mark XXII got ~1500 but that is a match barrel 22 bolt action, 300 win mag federal was shot on the same day and got 2960 just like the rated box velocity within 5 minutes of the previous and regular .22 subsonic all getting ~1070-1100 from the same XXII before the velocitors were shot, they get about box velocity of ~1400 with an old CBC .22 bolt actions on different days too.
The Interceptors velocity and penetration out of the handgun was pretty darn good. Great video. BTW I don't know how to pronounce "Aguila" and don't really give a damn. Heck. I'm still not 100% sure about "Mosin Nagant" and "Sellier and Bellot" and a lot of other stuff. Some people just troll. I would just block A-holes like that.
The velocitor is designed for hunting, controlled expansion and penetration in a rifle. It is the king of 22 LR for that purpose. Thanks for the video.
The Interceptor edged out the Velocitor in my opinion. I use the Velocitor at home in a revolver with a 6" barrel but never tested it to see how it would perform. After this test, I will be switching to the Interceptor. In rifles, they both seem to perform adequately but the advertised velocity in the box is too optimistic.
Wish I could ever find Interceptors on the shelf. Would have to go online for them. Good test. I wouldn't mind if you just tossed 1 classic Remington Thunderbird in the gel after the initial gel shots -- just to directly compare if the extra costs are worth it.
I have some of that HV ammo but my 10 22 shoots standard stuff very well. Seems to be more consistent. I use it for target load HV at night for defense. The SV does the job and much more inexpensive.
The Browning BXP 40gr JHP anchored a lot of raccoons and other varmints when other brands wouldn't. If you could test some I'd appreciate it, they use Winchester 40gr projectiles with the same velocity as these two loads.
When the rounds are that far off the rated speed, it could be the ammo, gun or the combination. Good excuse to buy more guns and ammo, if you do not have other 22 lr options. And please keep testing and taking us along.
I only have so many guns lol. Sometimes people think I am a professional with sponsors, rather i'm just some guy that is running out of safe space trying to fill requests. I do have a 2.68" (I think) Heritage Barkeep that might work for shorter barrel testing. The barrel is a tad slow so realistically it's about as slow as a better quality 1.9" barrel.
@@exothermal.sprocket Thankfully I have a few hundred rounds of Punch. But I am concerned about "only" 29 grains vs 40. From what i've heard, heavier is usually better.
Given the feet per second fluctuation in both rounds. I'd like to see 3 shots from each round into the gel, and look at the average penetration. I don't think one shot from each tells the whole story. Maye it does, but I'm not so sure. Good video, thanks for sharing it. JT
ballisticsbytheinch got 1401fps for the Velocitor out of a Kimber Classic, 22" barrel. Seems to be a round that benefits from a longer barrel, to a point. That same rifle got 1430fps for 33gr Yellowjacket, 1569fps for 32gr Stingers.

Aguila had a round called the Super Maximum with a 30-grain solid point bullet with an advertised velocity of 1750 fps and 204 feet pounds energy. Barrel length is not mentioned on the box.
I'd like to see how these do in an AR pistol chambered in 22lr. I have a Kel-Tec, and Mossberg just kinda curious about an 11in barrel. Theres a lotta ppl use them in bug out bags, plinking, etc.
Disappointing velocity from CCI. Aguila as well but they are made in Mexico. I've always sort of turned my nose up at Aguila ammo but I guess I should rethink that. At least for inexpensive .22lr plinking ammo. I don't use .22lr for self defense but the information you provide is good just in general. Thanks for making these videos!
About a week ago, off camera after finishing up filming, I shot some of the Aguila Super Extra and got a nasty squib that backblasted into my face and eyes a bunch of powder, burned my eyelids. I am not saying that means Aguila is bad as i'm sure that can happen to any brand, but it's the only brand i've had that happen to as of yet. Interesting fact, the rods that hold my chronograph shades are smaller than .22" lol
@@GunSam Wow, glad you're ok. I guess I'll continue to avoid aguila. The rods on my chrono are pretty small as well but it didn't stop me from accidently shooting one with a .45 Colt 😖
So, I have a little perspective on this... .22lr is a "long" cartridge, which is a throwback to the first black powder cartridges. Rimfires were (until recently) predominantly loaded with black powder, as it's more sensitive to the primers than smokeless. This may be why there's a difference in smell between the CCI and Aguila. I dunno about Aguila, as I put a lot of stock in CCI due in no small part to reliability, but CCI is FFFg black powder in most .22lr cartridges they offer. I used to use a Marlin model 95 in the desert for survival hunting, and so I can attest to Velocitors being the creme of the crop as far as .22lr is concerned for a 22 inch barrel in a rifle. It kept me from starving. Of course, I am the exception, not the rule- I've always been a bit of a stickler for accuracy where .22lr is concerned. Also, I have always been a student of anatomy, and as such, my results are not typical. What's more, I will put myself out there by saying that I used to use a Navy Seal trick on my bullets to create four-petal hp's for hunting, for surity of humane kill. Again, this changes the performance of the bullets dramatically. I don't recommend anyone try this, as it is not something that is generally acceptable for the shooting world. However, under an expert hand, it makes one hell of a difference, as the bullets behave more like a RIP round. AGAIN, IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED. IT MAY EVEN BE ILLEGAL IN YOUR JURISDICTION, SO CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS. It wasn't illegal when I was doing it, so I have a truly unique perspective on the true capabilities of the 22lr CCI Velocitor. Food for thought, for the survivalists in the group.
I did a test with velicitor vs interceptor. I dont have gel so i shot through dogfood cans and caught them in water jugs. The interceptor rounds i were using were the old round nose type. I was surprised that the round noses expanded as well as they did. Have you ever tried the round nose interceptor in gel? Thanks for the video.
It's disappointing when the top tier loadings in the brands are not delivering their advertised performance. At least they are more likely to go bang than the bulk stuff. I hope.
Well done video! I have a question, if the .22 gun is an auto loader, does the bullet lose velocity due to cycling the bolt? Seems like it would. Thanks!
I just want ammunition that will cycle the action on my bersa pistol....cci stingers work well with it and inexpensive federal ammunition doesn't. I have velociters in it now but am looking forward to trying some cci uppercuts or I'm just going back to stingers. I'm not against putting a weaker spring into that little plinker to just use the inexpensive bulk ammunition if it would make a difference in cycling through a full magazine because my main targets are just golf balls 😊.
They also make solid point Interceptors, still 40 grains. I wonder how much deeper they would have gone into the gel block out of both the handgun and the rifle.
Technically it's "ag-you-ee-la" but it's near impossible for an English speaker to say. I said it basically right but without the fast ee sound. Just ag-eeeee-la like people keep saying, and claiming it is correct is another Mandela effect thing going on, where right off the bat someone erroneously stated something as fact when it was wrong, and then more people remember the wrong thing than the correct thing.
I had never use Agila cal .22, as the only available here is CCI’s, can you also featured a Taurus Pistol Cal .22 on its performance on Agila vs CCI, thanks.
I think it's an expensive idea. I do that with .357/.38 Special, but I really am limited on my rimfire options. I got the LCRx 3" .22 WMR and 4.6" Heritage in .22 WMR/.22 LR, a 2.68" barkeep and this Taurus 4.1" in rimfire.
The lower than advertised speeds might be due to your 18" barrel is a bit tighter inside than other barrels, plus, this high velocity ammo shoot faster from a 20" - 22" than from 18" and below. From my rifle with 20" barrel the average speed of CCI Std Vel is 1115fps compared to the 1070fps advertised on the box and even less from some other rifles. The story of 12" - 14" - 16" barrel length being the ultimate for complete powder burning and maximum speed is somewhere between, a myth, half-truth and a lie, all depending on the barrel and the ammo. Even out of a 20" barrel there are still some unburned powder coming out of the barrel and I can show you a video for that as well if you are interested but you can test it yourself. Here is a video where the Interceptor reach an average speed of 1508fps and I think that is a 20" barrel as well. It definitely differ with different barrels of the same length. ruclips.net/video/-ymiVT3cQvQ/видео.html
Never heard of it. Upon looking it up now though, I have basically seen the design. For me, it's just too complex to trust. If I was in the heat of the moment, i'd want as few moving parts as possible. I would rather carry the bulk of a Safariland Comp style loader than to have to let some speed strip roll up into a shape that _might_ fit the chambers. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I've chrono'd aguila 40 grain interceptors out of a marlin 39a with a 24 inch barrel and got 1500 fps?!, I can't help but think shorter barrels and cheaper guns are the cause of alot of 'under performing' ammo nowadays?
I've seen 1500 with weatherby XXII also, that is match barrel though. it gets about ~1400 out of an old cbc bolt action they are all around the same 18 inch length
@@GunSam thanks for the info. I may have to rethink using Stingers. I'm always interested in Real life comparison of 22. I have A Beretta 21a pocket pistol that I really like and if there's a better Round for it I'll try it 😀.

I would say a Gold Standard would have to be something that has been around for a long time that other things are compared to. Rare for a new thing to be held as the standard when older things were used with success for a long time. If a person wants to say a .22 LR is a Gold Standard, I would think that the CCI Stingers that came out in the 70's and have been the recommendation for not only rifles, but self defense handguns for the past 50 years, would be the Gold Standard.
@@GunSam I think we are getting way to deep into such a trivial subject. I just meant that the Federal Punch, is the best of the best, when it comes to reliable deep penetrating .22lr cartridges, due to its flat nosed, nickel plated lead projectile and casing and higher velocities in short barrels. Of course that is only one person's opinion.

Remington Viper #21239 36gr 1410 fps.
Enjoy these 22 comparisons.
Gun Sam, keep doing the 22 and 38special viedos i really lovem, im big big fan of 22's interesting results. Thanks😊
Always has great performance with any aguila ammunition in a range of firearms.
The person I said it to was nice back.
I wanna know the story behind the aggressive response

Hi, I rarely comment on RUclips videos but, I really love your content. I know you guys get a lot of negative comments from people who know nothing! You perform experiments that I don't have the resources to perform. I've gleaned so much knowledge from you. So, thank you. I'm a revolver guy but I'm a pragmatist so, I carry semi auto 9s and when I'm in my forest, here in the Ozarks I carry my 4 inch 357. Anyway, thanks for your information. Rev
i sincerely do appreciate you taking your time making this video. I do. i am an old guy who's been shooting forever, but none of us has the time to try everything out there, so it' really nice to have someone like you to "wring" these things out for us. . . the gun gods smile upon you ! ( And probably the real, one and only God too ! ) Thanks, Tim
I'll take either. I have respect for both. I enjoy your videos! More please!
Great comparison, that Rossi seems to work quite well. Thank you.
Thanks. I disassemble it the night before every video I film and clean it. Not super easy to do, but it does seem to help it keep running pretty good.
Interesting test Sam, I'm really impressed with the Interceptors.
I really enjoy your videos, especially with the self defense 22 rounds. Please keep up the good work.
Great video
I wish I had your range set-up. Love your videos.
Like always great show!
GS. Another good and interesting video. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thank you. Interesting results. These tests are still viable for hunting considerations. For coyote or groundhog type game/varmint this is helpful.
When the rounds are that far off the rated speed, it could be the ammo, gun or the combination. Good excuse to buy more guns and ammo, if you do not have other 22 lr options. And please keep testing and taking us along.
Only wish you would include a 2" barrel as well. A lot of us have the ruger lcr22.
LCR and LCPII. Probably better off just going with the tried and true Federal Punch in these stubby barrels.
@@exothermal.sprocket Thankfully I have a few hundred rounds of Punch. But I am concerned about "only" 29 grains vs 40. From what i've heard, heavier is usually better.
@@GunSam I'm sure we appreciate all that you are able to put out.
@@mikem.2078 Punch has been compared to just about every .22LR in existence, both heavy and light, It out penetrates all of it.
I'd be really curious to see a comparison of the Super Max and a .22wmr 40 grain as they should be pretty close out of the same length barrel.
Aguilla rimfire had been surprisingly reliable and well performing
Thanks much
Nice video, thanks for posting
Are you high? I haven't seen any 22 rimfire ammo with black powder since the 1930s
@@WHEELGUNNER1 I actually kinda wish I was.
@WHEELGUNNER1 specifically because. 22lr wasn't a thing until the 50's.

I tested the round nose in gel probably like 8 months ago
It's disappointing when the top tier loadings in the brands are not delivering their advertised performance. At least they are more likely to go bang than the bulk stuff. I hope.
👍😊 i would buy both when available.
Well done video! I have a question, if the .22 gun is an auto loader, does the bullet lose velocity due to cycling the bolt? Seems like it would. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this.
Good video.
Great info.
Gs do you think if ammo makers made a say 42-43 grain 22 would you get more penatration ,but slower speed.
They already do and yes
They also make solid point Interceptors, still 40 grains. I wonder how much deeper they would have gone into the gel block out of both the handgun and the rifle.
The solid point Interceptor from this pistol got 15.75" penetration through the same exact medium.
Gun Sam did you notice the augilia smells funny. Nothing wrong just smelled different 😊
You might as well buy cci mini mags over the either of these, there just try use a high velocity gimmick, and higher prices over mini mags
Try a longer barrel rifle and then I'm pretty sure you will be around or near advertised factory ballistics.
Excellent tests again. I’ve always pronounced it ‘ag-wheel-ya’
@@GunSam gotcha. That Mandela effect thing is pretty cool.
It's actually pronounced Uh GEE luh. Which means Eagle in Spanish.
I had never use Agila cal .22, as the only available here is CCI’s, can you also featured a Taurus Pistol Cal .22 on its performance on Agila vs CCI, thanks.
what do you think about doin' this test w/2 different barrel length revolvers?
I think it's an expensive idea. I do that with .357/.38 Special, but I really am limited on my rimfire options. I got the LCRx 3" .22 WMR and 4.6" Heritage in .22 WMR/.22 LR, a 2.68" barkeep and this Taurus 4.1" in rimfire.
i think in the last year cci rimfire ammo quality has come down some compared to 4-5 years ago, maybe just me lol
Cool !
great videoooooo
Can you try shooting the same ammo in the same length barrel rifle one semi auto and in a bolt action
Hot Stuff!
Dang, now I want to go buy a new semi-auto .22 LR rifle.
I can afford the rifle; i can’t afford the divorce.
Ha... i know.
I checked your videos and found nothing on the wrapid loader? I was wanting your thoughts on it.
@@GunSam All good points. Thanks for the input.
I read these loads are bad (too hot ) for semi-Auto pistols ... true ?
I've chrono'd aguila 40 grain interceptors out of a marlin 39a with a 24 inch barrel and got 1500 fps?!, I can't help but think shorter barrels and cheaper guns are the cause of alot of 'under performing' ammo nowadays?
I've seen 1500 with weatherby XXII also, that is match barrel though. it gets about ~1400 out of an old cbc bolt action they are all around the same 18 inch length
I like the interceptor more, damage over penetration.

Federal punch = gold standard
I believe i can understand and agree, but isn't there a big drawback to the smaller 29 grains, vs 40?
I disagree. Speed makes light bullets shine. Reducing speed and bullet weight just makes them nearly worthless.
@@jasonshults368 The Punch is an extremely fast bullet, 1070fps out of a 2" barrel, and approx 1600 out of an 18" barrel.
Of course that is only one person's opinion.
