    Is the 22 a great defensive round? No. On the other hand it beats an unkind word. The handguns can be very small and compact, recoil is very manageable, the 22 might be with someone who didn’t t want to carry a larger heavier recoiling pistol. ‘As I age my appreciation for 22lr and 22wmr continues to grow.
    You really put out good content.

    Over the years of Gunsmith work and working part-time in a shop that sold Heritage Arms Revolvers, I found that the Cylinder Gaps varied greatly. I think this is primarily due to the fact that you can order cylinders that are not "fitted" to the gun, and are rather generic in fit. Some gaps were larger and some were less. The luck of the draw. My guess is that if you had 4 Heritage Rough Rider family revolvers, you'd get a slight variation due to gas leaking at the cylinder gap. Just my opinion and personal experience.

      @@chrislang5659 he managed to make some changes, including lifting the restrictions of 9mm Luger, 357 magnum, 45 ACP… but all of this got revoked by the new government. Civilians now can register only two guns for self defense and it should be a 38 special, 380 or less. 12 gauge pump is also available but semi autos are restricted. In Bolsonaro’s government there was also the possibility of registered shooters to concealed carry a gun in certain occasions. This was also revoked. Concealed carry license now here is almost impossible. Also to register a weapon for self defense it’s required to prove “effective necessity” and sometimes this goes easy and sometimes it gets tricky. There are now 3 levels of sports shooters also, level one can have 4 weapons and none restricted just 22LR pistol, revolver or repetition rifle(even the semiautomatic 22 rifles are restricted), 38spl, 380…, level two can have 8 weapons and none of them are restricted and level three can have 16 weapons with 4 restricted and the restricted ones include 9mm pistols, 308 and 223 rifles semi auto or not. People that got the guns at bolsonaros time will be able to keep them and buy ammo. To buy new ones the new rules apply.

      @@chrislang5659 you can also be a registered hunter. You can’t use your weapons of sports shooting to hunt. You have to buy weapons and register specifically for this. The only available species for hunting are hogs. You can’t use your hunting weapons for self defense. Also it’s possible to register as a collector. In this cases there are fewer restrictions to the types of weapons you can have but you can’t buy ammo and also you have to make a lote of preparations in your home to safeguard the weapons and get your license for it.

    I always enjoy your real world tests, As Paul Harrell suggests, if I am defending myself with a TX 22, I'll be aiming at the upper part of the target, if you know what I mean. Sooo, I'd like to see a different analog for that area of the body when testing .22LR. No clothing, less gel before mdf and then your regular gel block. It would be very interesting seeing different rounds and barrel lengths.

    When .22 Plinkster got the early samples of the Uppercut (because he's in tight with CCI), he never did video of testing the Uppercut in a revolver. He did mention that CCI said not to use it in revolvers. I asked him about it, and he said he did test it in revolvers, but the velocities were too low and too inconsistent, so he didn't bother to put it in the video.
    He also criticized people testing the Uppercut in Clear Ballistics, because it reacts less like real flesh that the Knox gelatin he used.

    • @elsullo2
      @elsullo2 3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, the .22 does not have enough pressure power to lose any to the cylinder gap! But Clear Ballistics silicone gel and Knox Gelatin is simply comparing apples to oranges. They are SEPARATE CATEGORIES and should not be compared or criticized................................elsullo

      @@sinisterthoughts2896 I went back and rewatched the video, and have to disagree with you. 4 out of the 5 in the Knox gel clearly expanded (and he admitted the one turned backwards with minimal expansion), while none of the 5 in Clear Ballistics expanded. Penetration levels between the two gels were similar, sure. But the one that didn't expand and flipped backwards in the Knox had similar penetration to the Clear Ballistics ones as well. I guess he could have removed the bullets from the gel and showed a side-by-side comparison, but he didn't. I guess he figured you could see the difference in expansion inside the gel well enough, so he left it at that.

    When I tested the Uppercut at the range, I ran It through a TX22 compact, P17 , LCP II and 10/22. My biggest issue was that it didn't cycle well in the LCP II and with the 10/22 the poi was all over the place at 50 yds. I thought it was because the velocity was not consistent enough. You feel when the round goes off if it is good or mediocre. Your tests have confirmed my assumption. The velocity of the Uppercut was all over the place in your test.
    I love the stinger. Cycles well in all guns and delivers consistent performance.

    Great video. Thanks for all job done. I the end, I would prefer the Stinger for defense with 22LR. Interestingly there are good companions for 22LR like 380 ACP and even the 38 SPL SHORT from Magtech, this one with energy equivalent to a 32 ACP but with diameter of 38 which causes a little more damage. Modern 22LR ammo turned a very effective choice for those who love the light recoil and fast and precise aiming that these low cost caliber deliver. In that famous study on the stopping power of ammunition, the 22LR proved to be one of the most lethal and stopped the attacker with 1.5 shots on average, less than the 38 and 380 and much less than the 9mm (2.7 if I'm not mistaken ). Of course, it is also one of those that stopped the attacker the least, with around 30% failure to stop the attack. The 380 did very well in that study with about 1.70 rounds to stop the attacker. Well, we have calibers for all tastes! Life is good!! 👍👍

    This is the first test where we've seen those uppercut expand in clear ballistic 10% gel out of a handgun at velocities of around 1000 fps and still penetrate to 10 inches after it expand to .34 . There are other 2 or 3 tests on the tube from other gun tester where at speeds from 950 to 1050 those uppercut never expand and simply acting like fmj thumbling and penetrating no more than 9 - 12 inches.

If almost all other rounds perform fine in clear gel the same as they do in organic gel, then ONE round design does not perform in clear gel....blaming the gel seems a bit dumb. If you got to rig a test to show it will perform, that means without a doubt that it's not going to perform in the 'real world'.

    Another .22 appreciation club member here. Just recently picked up a TX22 to go with a S&W J and K, and 80s vintage Beretta 21s. I find it interesting that a number of recognized experts as well as military and intelligence services around the world in the years since metallic cartridges were introduced who have offered reserved advocacy or quiet use of .22LR, and Bill Jordan 60 years ago as well as Greg Ellifritz and Paul Howe today admit to having a .22 Magnum in a pocket or clipped in the waist band on occasion. Other than on small game from rifles, I haven’t seen any published articles or data that ever suggested a .22 rimfire expanded consistently. Furthermore, I’ve noted that it may appear that .22 hollow point rounds don’t penetrate as far as solids. Consequently, it becomes a question in my mind as to what solids tend to penetrate consistently within the window of 12 to 20 inches from a 1.78 to four inch barreled pistol as defined bY FBI protocol? I wish S&W, Ruger, or Taurus (or any other manufacturer for that matter) would consider making a small frame 22LR/Mag revolver with interchangeable 7-shot cylinders to shoot both rounds. Both exposed and concealed hammer, but mostly concealed hammer ( and good sights). And keep the price below $500. I can see there might be a market.

    When i measuring from outside my right arm to center of my heart its exactly 12", i guess that is what the FBI 12" minimum is represented by. Measuring from outside my left arm to my heart is 8", and my chest front to back is 10". In a self defense you are most likely to shot on perp in the chest, therefor should a 10" shot through the MDF be plenty.

    Two camps here - penetration or expansion. It's hard to find a 22 LR round to expand from a pistol and the 22 LR is pretty weak so the best answer is the deepest penetration possible using 40 grain RNL bullets. That's how I see using the 22 LR for defense if nothing else is available.

    Not only do the cylinder gaps vary and tend to be rather wide in the Heritage, the forcing cones generally are configured such that you can virtually use them to pour motor oil into your truck. Remove the cylinder and stick a loaded round into the forcing cone. Note how much further it goes into the barrel versus say, a Ruger Wrangler or Single Six. The velocity difference between the two is most notable in cooler weather, which is when you are most likely to use the gun……..e.g. running a trapline. Said by a guy that chrono s a lot of ammo in Heritage and Ruger Revolvers. In fact my Heritage has a longer barrel (6.5”) than any of my Rutgers and the Rutgers shoot noticeably faster most particularly in cold weather.

    Good .22 LR ammo from a rifle can get about the same energy foot pounds as 380 ACP. And 380 ACP Xtreme Penetrator is the same diameter and the same penetration depth as 9mm. 9mm is going to perform more or less the same ballistically as 40 S&W. 40 S&W is just a weaker 10mm. So my concealed carry is a 22 LR which is basically the same as 10mm.

      .50 BMG is a little wider than two .22 LR's, so 3 rounds of .22 LR is more powerful than one round of .50 BMG. With .50 BMG there's a lot of recoil so you will miss, so the .50 BMG is actually now 0 ft lbs energy of effective energy, therefore in the real world, the .22 LR is more powerful.

      Yeah, I get that a lot. Usually in the form of "12 Inches??". For whatever reason, the bullets close to the right side of the block (facing the block long wise) are not off too much, but to the left side of the block (my plain gel side), they are very far off. Like for an example, maybe a really low penetrator like a .22 that went to 7" in the gel...it looks like the bullet is at like 9" when it's not at all.

    One thing this round might excel at is use in a suppressed pistol. It’s just my theory, but I think the fully jacketed round would burn cleaner and leave less debris and deposits in the silencer body, as well as back in the action of the pistol. Sam, did you notice any difference when cleaning your Taurus?

      Actually, I saw the impact a few days later. It's an older one I leave out there so I could care less, but luckily the bullet went dead center through one aluminum leg, causing no change to it's structural integrity.

    I haven't seen a good review on the uppercut to date. I have not purchased any either. I like stingers. Cci really did not think this one through at all
    Why didn't they put the jacketed hp in the stinger case?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 месяца назад +1

      I'm not sure how it was loaded, but if it were me and I was making something like this, i'd make the bullet smaller and have that Syntech junk on the bullet to make it the right size, that way bore drag is lowered and they would go as fast as the Stinger and actually work right.

    GS. Another good and interesting video. I have a comment on barrel length vs velocity. In this video from a few years back my Heritage with 6.5" barrel plus the cylinder travel was worse than a 3"-barrel semi-auto because of a 0.007"-cylinder gap which I believe should be no more than 0.004". Video attached, go to 8:40 in for the chart if interested. Thanks again and take care. ruclips.net/video/BnGsYPR2O_g/видео.html

      Seems a bit extreme. Chronograph has worked perfectly for a long time, one test where it's got light issues due to trees and shadows, so picking up .22's is hard. Sirens and alarms "JUST SPEND HUNDREDS MORE ON THIS NEW DEVICE". Personally, I think just going out and using it like normal like I have done 3 times since filming this video, and having it work perfectly like it has, ignoring weird comments, is a better solution.

    Also, it might have helped to have a control of 40gr solid high velocity as that's what many people use in pocket guns for penetration, not a few I suspect because their pistols don't like stingers because of short chambers or small pistols can cycle too fast with stingers.

    I am not a fan of the 22 for defensive purposes unless you absolutely have nothing else (other than the 25 auto) in the way of a firearm. When it comes down to it it's better than no gun but you had better be darn accurate with it.

    If you can't hit what you're aiming at, a self-defense round is useless. Instead of buying fancy ammo, shot placement is the skill you should be acquiring. Personally,
    I prefer shooting Winchester Hyper Velocity. It is a 40g hollow point 1435 fps round. I shoot this round out of a Buckmark Contour 7¼ barrel and several single-shot rifles with a 30 inch barrel @400yds. The hyper velocity round has greater stability and is copper plated. I also like the M-22 @1255 fps for plinking and target practice.
    Self-defense is ALL about shot placement, NOT the ammo. Fancy ammo will never make you a better shot.

    for windows and other barriers if we put it in context of a private citizen or police its different with rare exception to the rule, a window would mean your attacker would have to shoot through the same window you do to hit you, in a private citizen defense context they would try and shoot you with window rolled down, and since unlike the police your not chasing a suspect exending gun fight where you have to stop a suspect, you would not chase but defend from cover and extract your self from that situation, as a private citizen rare exceptions having to shoot through window unless car trying to run you over or kidnaping like having to stop driver, its very rare you have to shoot through a window because even if a drive by attack their window is down and head showing sometimes in order to see you to shoot you, that head is your target but gun fight is only going to last a couple seconds and if your smart you will not be out in the middle of the street being a target, despite a 9 mm or 40 critical defense or other barrier loads you can still get shot making a waist of a good barrier bullet you were not able to use, police on the other hand will be out in the middle of street needing to stop that car and you dont because you not trying to capture and arrest but hold your possition or cover defending or extracting breaking contact letting police worry about a chase, you have won the gun fight if they leave so no need to chase, even a quick swarm of bees from a 22 lr will send them on their way, some 22 lr guys can fire 5 rounds a second in a second with accuracy being no recoil, a head in a open window with 5 rounds a second is a attention getter, with a 22 lr you would get cover as use the same break in contact defense tactics, defense shooting is competition shooting in reverse , your shooting going to cover not shooting to come out of cover with many guns shooting at you making you a dead man, on the range it looks good with paper and steel that doesnt shoot back in competition shooting but in the real streets they dont fall like magic from a double tap, nor do they have a shot timer and guy with a beeper telling everyone when to start, gun fights are very short events where the first 3 seconds determin if you win or not, mostly after 3 to 6 seconds bad guys run from a defending armed citizen, not enough time worry about running after them trying to shoot a window when you won the gun fight already, their cowards after a private citizen sends a swarm of bees 22 lr or 230 grain 45 acp, same result as they lose a shoe or pants falling down running from your gun shooting back
