Generally that is what manufacturers mean by "optimized for short barrels/handguns". As to velocity, the fastest round from a long barrel will be the fastest from a short one...

Well if I were concerned about self defense from a potential Vampire assailant I'd be heavily influenced by advertising that implied the projectile had a silver tip.
Well , the meat targets were only tested from the 2.5 inch bbl , with which all the loads had low enough velocities , that minimal ( bullets doing various terminal things as designed ) took place with any of them . If they were tested with +\- 5 inch pistol , or even a rifle , there would be significant differences between the different loads .

Paul, Thank You for you're Service, experience and instruction. I enjoy you're way of explaining and demonstrations. You make yourself more than clear for the people with limited knowledge about a particular subject. Great Job!
If it goes bang, cycles a semi auto, and hits the intended target it is better than an empty magazine. While the numbers and results weren’t impressive, a loaded gun versus an empty gun during “shortages” can be enough difference to make a difference. 😁 I did try some of these awhile back. Unfortunately I can’t remember my results. I’m sure it wasn’t spectacular, but I don’t recall if there were any malfunctions. I suppose that’s enough excuse for another range trip. Another great video 👍😁
That is the bottom line...we don't depend on our .22's, but if we loaded them a chance beats no chance...we do depend on our .22's for affordable range time, and they shine in that role...now I want to go today and blow up a few rounds...☺
I keep my High Standard Sentinel nine shot 6" barrel revolver loaded with Stingers or Velocitors. It's definitely not high on the Go To List, but it could do some damage.
Does altitude also affect chrono results? Looks like lovely late summer weather and Paul is camouflaged without wearing cammo. It’s that time of the year where Paul’s Halloween special and Thanksgiving wild cook out are around the corner. My most watch treasured couple of hours of mine in a world increasing in tedium, pestilence and repression.
In theory, lower air density would increase velocities especially at range but some even at the muzzle. Only problem is higher altitude usually also means lower temps and low ammo temps reduces velocity. Of course the differences are small enough that you can ignore them unless your a sniper trying to pull off a two mile shot.
The point is the comparative results, not the absolute results. Weather conditions, altitude, sobriety of the shooter, etc. should be even for all brands tested in the same relatively brief period.
Altitude in and of itself doesn’t affect muzzle velocity, but the higher you go in altitude the lower average barometric pressure gets, and barometric pressure does affect powder burn and aerodynamics, thus affecting velocity.
@@MaxwellAerialPhotography, modified powder burn won't affect muzzle velocity? (Why do that call it "velocity" anyway? The projectile is completely restricted in direction, so they might as well use a scalar unit.)
I think we can all agree that only Paul could make a 20+ minute video testing and reviewing one single brand of .22 and make us wish there was an "extended cut". Between Paul and Ian at FW, who could ask for anything more as a firearms enthusiast?
I like that Paul mostly demonstrates with time tested calibers and firearms. I'm not one to go out and buy the newer calibers. BTW my deer rifle is over 100yrs old.
From the time I was a teenager in the 80,s I've always used Stingers for hunting any small game. Squirrels, rabbits.frogs, turtles, even quail and head shots on turkeys. Very accurate in my old Remington bolt action at the time. For plinking we just always bought the cheap boxes of thunderbolt at Wal-Mart for .50 cents a box. But there is a huge difference in the two. Love shooting 22lr. Now all my grandkids have 22lr,s and we still have a blast. I should have bought them single shots instead of Ruger 10/22 with 25 rnd mags. They can go through a bucket of bullets in a day.
You can sure hear the difference when those projectiles come out of a longer barrel and break the sound barrier. The unmistakable CRACK of supersonic bullets gives me chills...and makes me smile. Thanks Paul. You've made my day a little happier. 😉🤞🚬
Thanks for another great video. I think it’s easy to take for granted the time you put into these videos. Digging the bullets out of the ribs to show deformation is too much for me. But I’m glad you do it! Big 👍🏼.
Finally got the AR out to the range again this year, and decided to rip off the silly optic I had on it and go with the iron sights and man am I happy. I forgot how surgical the accuracy is on this rifle with it's standard optics.
Great discussion Paul! Thanks for doing all the work that you do! BTW when CCI stingers first came out , they were a real game changer for our.22 LR rifles.
As a 22lr fan, I appreciate your time on "only a 22" as I'm ribbed my many, to bring light and knowledge to the shall I say " narrow minded" people that say a 22 won't kill you, these are the people I don't argue the point.... I just no longer shoot with, for my own safety..... Great video, much appreciated, thank you, take care and God bless
He sees it on the camera viewer, but to be fair, there is no possible way I could even see THAT at the tripod distance he uses. I would be able to see the small movements on the screen, but not the tiny boxes on the bulletin board, and *_definitely_* not the numbers printed. He has remarkable eyesight - something I assume most competitive shooters are blessed with - BUT I believe it is his peripheral vision that is almost inhuman. Watch any of his old videos and you will notice what I mean. His peripheral vision is unnatural.
I just posted the same thought. If he's the 'average shooter' then I'm not even the greenest of n00bz! My .357 ego just shriveled down to 22 short at that line.
Ty Paul for all your videos your the best. God bless you and your family your a national treasure. You have the most educational videos on youtube and you helped me alot.
We dug out a brick of Remington yellow box 22lr from the ammo can stash from dad's old gunshop he closed down in 1982. We went to the range to test a few new S+W ar15-22's and a tx22. Amazingly, it all went bang and made holes in the paper right where we were aiming. What I think is, there is a recipe for 22lr that is very hard to deviate from, because there are so many platforms to shoot from the manufacturers are very limited as to what will work as far as projectile weight, amount of power and it's burn rate to effectively cycle in auto loaders and also work in manual loaders. So basically we have relatively small variations in total energy across the board. What do you think?
This is the reason I never pass up stringers when in find them on sale. Unfortunately I haven't seen any in nearly 2 years. Thanks for the awesome video!!!
So true. I picked up a box of stingers which I gave to my daughter for her 22 pistol. It has a short barrel, but by Paul's test, they are the fastest, which, I hope means better penetration. It's all her little hands will handle, and hopefully more than enough to convince any bad people to run, or go down.
I was lucky enough to get a few boxes of stingers earlier today. I was genuinely surprised because it was the first time I've ever seen them not sold out.
@@CJ-by8ij yup, I bought a box of stingers at academy yesterday...could have bought 3 more, but instead bought 3 boxes mini-mags...as much .22 as we blow up had to go with quantity...

Well, I have to say thank you. I did buy a 22 handgun and I did purchase several boxes of the silvertip because it stated it was made for the short barrels. I also bought them because my neighbours are a wall thickness away and several other RUclipsrs showed that they don't over-penetrate.
Another 22LR pistol ammo review and the Stingers seem to come out on top. The more I see and hear of Stingers, the more really want to get some to try myself.
I have seen them at Academy for 9.99 relatively recently. Also pretty commonly available on CCI's website but they get you on shipping unless you spend 100.
I always enjoy your videos Paul. I wonder though, while velocity is telling, does foot pounds of energy bear mentioning? For instance, Silvertips, Mini-Mag and Yellow Jackets are around 69-70 fpe, whereas Stingers are 78 fpe (all based on bullet weight and your average velocity). So in "the difference that may not make a difference" department, the Stinger is 14.3% faster than Silvertips, its fpe is less, at 11.4% stronger. Admittedly, distinction of fpe is probably more substantive in higher calibers. Thanks for covering all this neat stuff for us!
@Craig Robertson I’ve only seen a couple and that was over at Buffalo Outdoors IIRC. I believe Silver Tips and Yellow Jackets he tested were the only ones that had expansion in short barrels but Stingers otherwise did best. For me it’s Stingers all the way for hunting, but usually shoot them out of rifles or 6”+ pistol barrels. I did used to like the YJs also as they did better out of the 4” Ruger Mark II we had years ago. Bigger cavity in YJ seemed to open up when nothing else did on rabbits out of that short barrel. I also like anything with the truncated cone shape in .22 autos as they feed better than round nose in everything I have. Both loads are good in that regard in my experience.
I believe the "optimized for handguns" marketing more refers to the performance threshold of the segments, similar to how your hollowpoint expansion threshold was explained, rather than velocity or pressures out of pistol barrels.
Yeah, I think Paul kinda glossed over the segmenting aspect of the silvertips...i've watched a couple videos of the round shot into gel, and if the same result was achieved in the meat target I wish he had pointed it out, or if it didn't segment...
@@ragnarlothbrok9133 That is not necessarily true for segmenting/fragmenting ammunition. I did some extra research on silver tips and there is another youtuber who tested with a 16 inch barrel and it performed similarly, but with deeper penetration. Hollowpoints might get worse penetration when used at higher velocities, but this does not necessarily apply to this projectile.
Winchester just about always exaggerates their ammo velocities. Their definition of 'optimized for handguns' means that it likely has less flash and the bullet fully performs out of a handgun.
At over $0.20 a round at the very cheapest, I'm incredibly disappointed with ther Winchester Silvertip ammo. It's the overhype like this that gives "hyper ammo" a bad name. The Federal Punch was actually truthful. Winchester seems to fudge the numbers quite a bit.
It is just disappointrg how the ammunition manufacturers are so cynical about their customers → put a fancy name on the box, make an outrageous claim (e.g., optimized for zombie werewolf vampires), jack up the price by 2 or 3 times, and then wait for the rubes to line up. Despicable! Thanks for another honest review. Maranatha!
I bought a couple of boxes last week mainly cause I saw them on a normally bare shelf. Then went to the range. I fired five rounds out of each of my two Beretta Bobcats that recently came back from the shop after getting refurbished internally. All rounds went bang as opposed to the CCI Mini Mag solids that I’d wanted to carry as a defensive round. I hadn’t played with these pistols for quite a while, but was reminded that the little Berettas didn’t like certain CCI primers. Also discovered I’d been shooting striker fired and single action guns for a long time and forgot that the second strike capability of a DA/SA. Anyway, the Silver Tip 22s cycled thru my 34 & 37 year old Bobcats just fine. Glad you demonstrated these rounds thru a stubby-barreled 22 pistol. For 22LR in self defense mode, I think I’d prefer penetration at the risk of little to no expansion if using it from a short barreled handgun. I like your use of the “meat” targets and an curious if any of the so called industry experts and FBI ballistics testers would someday care to comment on that medium compared to 10% ordinance gelatin. Other recent You Tube videos I’ve seen testing the Silver Tip have used bare gelatin to get penetration of 12-13 inches. Anyway, great video. I’ll continue to keep my little Berettas loaded with the ST cause I know it goes bang and cycles. I’ll keep the Mini Mags for the S&W revolvers and 10/22s.
Hey Paul, I would love a presentation comparing 7.5 FK and 5.7x28. I think a comparison of their penetration of hard and soft targets (especially my favorite, the meat target).
Summer ends next week and I sense building anticipation for the next season of the year, Paul Harrell. Fresh practical advice on turning back the Zombie Apocalypse and the Pumpkin Horde is just around the corner. Excitement!
I was just getting ready to go to sleep and saw this fresh upload so I had to watch...😁 I find it interesting that there was quite a jump in velocity between the 2.5" LCP and the 4" M&P where the barrel length was not even twice as long but not a greater jump like I was expecting between the 4" M&P and the 18.5" 10/22 where the barrel length was over four times longer... I wonder at what barrel length is the optimum for velocity and where any longer will not help any more?
If you are using standard velocity target grade ammo (SK, RWS, Eley, etc) you will be slowing down after 18-20 inches of barrel. When you have consistent primer and powder load and burn them completely in a long enough barrel, that is how you get velocities in a 5-10 fps window. Add to that a match chamber tight enough to increase pressure and expand the heel of the bullet to engage the rifling and throw in a flat nose to avoid yaw and tilt into cross winds, then you get quarter inch groups at 100 yards
I wish that I could remember the name of the website. They have a very extensive database showing the results of shooting a wide variety of calibers and ammo in different barrel lengths. IIRC with most pistol ammo calibers the velocity increase maxes out at around 14" inches of barrel.

Thank you. I love objectivity and ammunition.
Got to love this mans sense of humor.
Notice how nature in the background is perfectly still as Paul goes about his comparison. Nature knows not to mess with Paul.
Isn’t it annoying when manufacturers try to get you to pay high prices for hype, rather than genuinely better products?
Well if I were concerned about self defense from a potential Vampire assailant I'd be heavily influenced by advertising that implied the projectile had a silver tip.
@@shad-o-band I’m ready for the Zombie apocalypse but I hadn’t thought about the Vamp’s.
@@bubbajones5905 Oh yeah, it's a real thing here in Oregon. We even have the hybrid brain dead blood suckers to worry about!
@@shad-o-band In Michigan here. We haven't gotten bloodsuckers yet aside from mosquitoes, however I'll put together a crossbow with thick wooden stakes as bolts just in case if any appear here.
Nice to see the Ruger LCP II in the analysis, I picked one up for a summer carry option and have become quite fond of the little pocket pistol. I'll be switching to Stingers based on this video, currently carrying mini mags. Thank you for your time and effort!
Thanks for making the Winchester Silvertip 22LR video.

I did try some of these awhile back.
@@Salieri47 no doubt...and the longer barrel only helps...rule #1 is pretty open minded and simple, have a gun...
I said it as a kid, and I'll say it now at 62. " It's hard to beat those stingers"💥💥💥
Cant wait for those
The point is the comparative results, not the absolute results.
You rock paul thanks for sharing the great testing!
I think we can all agree that only Paul could make a 20+ minute video testing and reviewing one single brand of .22 and make us wish there was an "extended cut". Between Paul and Ian at FW, who could ask for anything more as a firearms enthusiast?
I know what you mean! I don't own a 22, don't pay attention to 22 ammo choices, but here I am thinking, "The video is over already???"
I like that Paul mostly demonstrates with time tested calibers and firearms.
I'm not one to go out and buy the newer calibers. BTW my deer rifle is over 100yrs old.
@Thomas Jackson Bet both of 'em will still put venison in the freezer, too. Old don't mean junk!
Great video Paul thank you it's always nice to have a heads up on hype ammo
You're doing good things Paul, good things...
I have little interest in this topic.
I loved every second of this presentation.
Bravo Zulu, Paul!
Always good to catch a Paul Harrell video when I get home from work.
Nobody dissing .22LR ever seems to want to stand in front of one... I wonder why? 🤔
Am I the only one slightly enamored watching him point to numbers he can't see?
forgot to turn off his aimbot
He's looking at the camera view screen dude... Did you think weathermen can't see the screen either?
He doesn’t actually see the chronograph. He sees the bullet leaving the barrel and can read it’s velocity.
@@danielaramburo7648 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍
He sees it on the camera viewer, but to be fair, there is no possible way I could even see THAT at the tripod distance he uses. I would be able to see the small movements on the screen, but not the tiny boxes on the bulletin board, and *_definitely_* not the numbers printed. He has remarkable eyesight - something I assume most competitive shooters are blessed with - BUT I believe it is his peripheral vision that is almost inhuman. Watch any of his old videos and you will notice what I mean. His peripheral vision is unnatural.
Thank you for the new presentation
Well I’ve got three boxes of this stuff and haven’t shot any so thanks for finding out for me if it’s good or not mr Harrell

Classic Paul❤
Thanks for taking the time to share with us all. I like your practical field testing that approximates average shooter performance.
Paul still cracks me up when he points at himself and says "The Average Shooter". At 20 yards, I'd need a bigger target.

So much for sleep tonight, thanks Paul.
@@johnshields9110 Generally, more velocity stifles penetration in an expanding bullet.
@@CJ-by8ij yup, I bought a box of stingers at academy yesterday...could have bought 3 more, but instead bought 3 boxes mini-mags...as much .22 as we blow up had to go with quantity...

Mr. Harrell. I have recently discovered your channel and I am so happy I did! Yes, you have a little Shatner in your cadence but your information is spot on. Keep the chrono in and keep doing what you are doing. You have one more fan in me.

Solid presentation as always.
I follow four firearms channels: Paul Harrel, Forgotten Weapons, mixup98, & Target Suite. This' the only channel where I regularly re-watch vids.
Paul Harrel feeds ammo through his pistols.
Florida Man feeds the algorithm
If I were to move to the USA it would be to Florida. So much darned fun you have there.
Florida "invisibly short shorts" Man is a joke. Albeit an admittedly good one. He is playing the audience and does it well whereas Paul is responsibly informing (Paul's famous presentations are almost scientific lectures). Paul Harrell FTW.
@@demezon6572 the guy you responded to doesn't have any YT videos up. Are you thinking of someone else?
@@darthkek1953 : yeah, I ventured to feed the algorithm with a twist. Was pointing to the TFB channel, where an exceptional lawyer escapes the legalese and engages in funny rants - and presentations. Visit his channel for a good laugh and some pieces of advice to remember. ATTENTION! Some get dazzled & confused by those "invisibly short shorts" there. TFB is based in Florida, too.
@@demezon6572 OK. Fair enough. I recognise they guy from TFB but I haven't seen him in years. For me PH for guns, Joerg Sprave for modern crossbows, and Tod Cutler/Workshop and ScholaGladatoria for medieval weapons. That's about it for weapons for me. Nice covering of bases.
Well, I have to say thank you. I did buy a 22 handgun and I did purchase several boxes of the silvertip because it stated it was made for the short barrels. I also bought them because my neighbours are a wall thickness away and several other RUclipsrs showed that they don't over-penetrate.
I'm sure they could make life really difficult for somebody if it comes down to that.
Another 22LR pistol ammo review and the Stingers seem to come out on top. The more I see and hear of Stingers, the more really want to get some to try myself.
IF you can find them, they won't be exactly "cheap". Expect to pay a
premium for them, maybe 30-40% more than regular .22LR ammo.
I have seen them at Academy for 9.99 relatively recently. Also pretty commonly available on CCI's website but they get you on shipping unless you spend 100.
@@rob6850 yeah my local shop has them and they were only $10 a box I think so I snagged some
I always enjoy your videos Paul.
I haven't yet seen a .22 comparison video where the CCI Stinger *wasn't* the clear winner.
I bought them every time I saw them before the "shortage". I love the round. Very fun to shoot soda cans and bottles out of my 10/22.
You need to see him compare them to the Hurtenburger Buscaderos and the Tiiiiicooooonnnndas
@Craig Robertson
I’ve only seen a couple and that was over at Buffalo Outdoors IIRC.
These demonstrations are downright useful!
I wonder how many of these videos I can now recite verbatim at this point. Best entertainment on the Internet.
I really enjoy your rebuttal videos. Long winded chastisings of the non thinkers in the comments. Please do more!

Good job on the comparison. Thank you for the details.
CCI is my 22LR choice , but I would like Winchester to start making the 32 ACP Silvertips again.
Try the .32 ACP Xtreme Defenders from Underwood. Best .32 self-defense ammo today in my opinion.
I still have some vintage 32acp silvertips.
Actually, I'd like to see Winchester start making the BLACK TALON
ammo again. If you ever saw how that ammo expanded, you would
know why.
@@hansanderson6607 Ranger T series is basically just black talon renamed, iirc.
As always a great video and good comparison of 22lr rounds.
This is an interesting point
Optimized for handguns is code for this sucks in rifles so don’t even bother.
@@ragnarlothbrok9133 if it goes bang we will find application...we can always shoot paper with poor ammunition...
Love the .22! Thanks again Paul! 👍👍
Winchester just about always exaggerates their ammo velocities. Their definition of 'optimized for handguns' means that it likely has less flash and the bullet fully performs out of a handgun.
most likely a faster burning powder so no flash and better velociry
Can we test this velociry against celery and brocorri?
@@MrDillaKilla Would be a waste of ammunition. :)

Ive rarely found any reason to use anything other than the CCI mini mag/segmented 40 grain line, OR a basic 40 grain subsonic round nose.
.20 cent a round!!!!!?????????? Wow, disgusting
That's insane, you can find 22 Winchester Super X for around 60 percent of that price for 100 rounds.
Merchandising! Merchandising! May the Schwartz be with you! (Spaceballs).
Let’s get Paul to 700K!
Maranatha!
But people buy it!
I'd love to see Paul do a comparison between .17 HMR and .22 WMR
That'd be interesting.
I've fired a lot of Hornady brand .17 HMR and I can say it's great for obliterating small game.
You could always send him some ammo and ask him to compare the two.
Not a bad idea, if I can find any .17 I just may do that.
I love these .22 reviews... keep them coming!
Hey Paul, I would love a presentation comparing 7.5 FK and 5.7x28. I think a comparison of their penetration of hard and soft targets (especially my favorite, the meat target).
He has presentations on both I'm pretty sure, just watch them back to back 😜
Summer ends next week and I sense building anticipation for the next season of the year, Paul Harrell. Fresh practical advice on turning back the Zombie Apocalypse and the Pumpkin Horde is just around the corner. Excitement!
I was just getting ready to go to sleep and saw this fresh upload so I had to watch...😁
I find it interesting that there was quite a jump in velocity between the 2.5" LCP and the 4" M&P where the barrel length was not even twice as long but not a greater jump like I was expecting between the 4" M&P and the 18.5" 10/22 where the barrel length was over four times longer...
I wonder at what barrel length is the optimum for velocity and where any longer will not help any more?
I think it all depends on the particular round. What works for one may not work for the other.
I would believe if you contacted Paul and provided some barrel lengths he might put it to the test so we can be the judge?
@@Salieri47 : "velocity by the inch"
