  • This video will review a 1996 Lexus LS400 with 313,000 miles. This car was for sale for $1,900. The video will review the current condition of the car, and offer tips to purchasing a similar Lexus LS400. Also, if you are considering a Lexus LS (or any Lexus for that matter), a great resource is the Lexus Owners Club. Check out this link for the LS 400 buyers guide - us.lexusownersclub.com/forums...

      I have a 1990 Lexus LS 400 but I bought in 1989 in Fort Worth Texas. I'm currently having it refurbished / restored I guess they made it has 500,000 miles on it because the odometer stopped recording it at 201000 20 years ago at least. Steam engine but recently had to change out the transmission with a refurbished used one. The restoration is mainly for aesthetics. The transmission lasted near 500,000 miles.

      I had a Lexus RX300 - biggest money pit and nightmare that I ever had for a vehicle. I only owned it for 6 months and it spent more time in the shop than me driving it. I only put 2k miles on it, and I had to pay $4k in repairs, more than I spent on all my other cars I ever owned combined. Every few weeks the check engine light would come on, and every repair ranged from $500 to $2k. And it still wasn't fixed - the rear struts were bad, the air conditioning didn't work, the timing belt was getting squeaky, and the tires needed to be replaced. I could only sell it for $2500 because there were so many issues with it. I ended up losing $6k on the car.

Oil change and tune-up. Every thing works, except speedometer needle on gauge cluster. But runs, and performs awesomely. That check engine light is probably from using wrong fuel leading to oxygen sensor and or Catylic converter issues or failure. Only use 92 -94 octane in these high performance engines. I've had offers up to $3000 for my LS. Not selling.

    Looking to buying a 2012 Lexus IS 250 as a project car and this video gave me confidence for buying a used Lexus. Also I think that most cars wouldn’t have a bad reputation far as having high mileage if majority of automotive consumers took care of their cars. For example; my coworker brought an infinity Q60 and after around 6 months I asked her if she checked the oil and she said;
    “nothing sounds wrong why should I?”
    Long story short, her car died and she blamed the brand and reliability afterwards.

    Pretty good video! I bought my 1999 LS400 close to a year ago. Getting very close to the 200K mark, the only real repairs I've had to do was a VVTi oil control valve replacement(on the '98-'00 cars that had the more powerful VVTi engines; about an hour or so DIY and $100-200 depending on where you get the parts) and cleaning/greasing a reluctant sunroof. I'm also getting 30-32mpg on the highway, with about 17-20 city depending if I'm in a ton of stop and go. Overall a very solid car.
    I had the chance to check out Matt Farah's LS400 last weekend, with a whopping 975K on the clock. It was a little reluctant to start, but otherwise ran very well. The A/C was even ice cold and it felt quite a bit like mine with only 1/5 the mileage. I'd have to say if you take care of your LS400, it'll definitely take care of you!

      Right you are. The VVT valve and solenoid are easy to reach. Am sure you checked the filter screen. For people buying one of these cars and the seller mentions this repair, it can be a sign that the oil was not changed frequently enough. Some day you may notice that the stability control light stays on longer than it should. That can happen when the battery has a weak cell. If that happens, replace the battery PROMPTLY to avoid adversely affecting the EMC. Nuts holding the valve covers often loosen with time. If you smell gas under the hood but can't find a leak, it will be just the fuel pulse damper...very simple, cheap replacement. Plugs last a very LONG time.
      Have never replaced mine. Join the Owners' Club, if you haven't already.

It has some engine vibration at about 2000 RPMs and I could feel it a little bit at slower speeds below 50 but at high speed I don't feel it & overall it runs great. I don't know if the engine vibration could be engine mounts, transmission mounts, timing is due I am assuming but I'm keeping this car.. the exhaust smells a little bit and the check engine light went on and right about one of the catalytic converters but I started putting premium gas in and the light went off. i had a ls400 and i loved it, the engine and tranny are reliable but the power steering system is awful. i got it off a grandpa with 170k miles. up until i got it, it had every single thing done at the dealership. literally receipts for everything. the rack and pinion was done 3x. a few moths after i got it the rack and pinion went out again and the differential did too. gauges stopped working. i fixed the capacitors and they went again quickly. passenger seat didnt work. and ac display was messed up and the antenna didnt work either. i fixed all that. twords my end of ownership i didnt take care of it. no oil change for 20k miles bald tires no breakes the power sterring pump was out. and yet it still ran perfect. not one time did it leave me on the side of the road or have a problem with the engine or transmision. i litterally would throw the car in park to stop it when the breaks completely gave out( i was 17 homeless and on drugs and lost) i do think rack and pinion going out 4x at 180k miles is prettty bad though. and its not like some cheap shop did it to it was a delaership.

      StoryTimeUSA yes rack and pinion is a weak point on these cars and imo a huge headache since it's hard for a backyard mechanic to do. I can do simple jobs. My navigator blew a heater core hose and radiator (I can do it no problem) rack and pinion? Not really comfortable doing that. And to anyone who doesn't believe me read some forums on these cars. They ARE bulletproof. But with anymachine 20+ years old it's gonna have it's problems

    Bought an ex-Singapore '95 LS400 at 145,000 km, sold it 90,000 km later. Only major problem was electrics, speedometer failed twice, expensive fix. I got 22 mpg (American gallons) or 28 mpg (imperial gallons) on the highway driving frugally. Can't see how this guy would have done 30+ mpg, sounds unlikely. VERY reliable car overall.

Only 204,000 miles to go, to reach 400K mi!! 😃 And my car is one of the rarest ones ever made. It has the Air suspension (I put 2 new front air shocks a few years after I bought it, but other than that the air suspension system still works perfectly - touch wood 😃 ), and Nakamichi stereo, HIDs, etc.

I’m a Toyota nut, I’ve owned them for over 30 years and I have gotten outstanding service from them! I have an 87 Truck with almost 400k on it. All I’ve done to it is one timing chain, new clutch (nephew burned it up trying to pull someone in a snow storm), and a mechanical fuel pump. Engine hasn’t been touched. I can only comment on the older ones, I hear the newer ones aren’t made as well. I don’t know, I can’t wear out my old ones

I have an UZ engine in 3 of my 4 cars 2 of which are 4x4s and i think the high mounted starter is a great feature when crossing water but i realize that im the rarity that actually use my 4x4 vehicles off road.
