@@BlockheadMoto hey blockhead, I have a serious question to ask about this install. If I were to relocate the turn signals to the forks I wouldn't need to depin anything or buy extra extensions correct? And the notches you made with the grinder, would I have to do that or was that just for the turn signals? I feel like the job would be easier for me if I just relocated the signals.
Block I know you need content but good on you regardless. You’re a patient teacher and getting that young lady turning a wrench clearly made her day. 👍
I actually put that same set on my 883 last night. It was my first mod I've ever done, and I was not ready for how much work it was. Super fun and I'm glad I picked bars, it taught me all sorts of important things. All I have left to do is bleed my brakes and I'm good to go. Another funny coincidence is that my name is Wes 🤣
Great video Blockhead! I just put Z-bars on my Sportster 72 and running the wiring through the bars was very hard! Those H-D bars certainly looked very easy to do! I ended up running a Teflon tube into my bars and put the wiring inside the tube. I would suggest that in the future you should check out KST Kustoms for wire extension. They make different lengths (6,8, and 12”) that have plugs on them, which make it plug and play! No cutting or soldering necessary!
Hey. Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your content, and watched this particular episode with interest. First off, I have a damaged hand that prevents me from doing a lot of my own work, even simple things that I know how to do. I recently took my 2017 Iron 883 to a H-D dealer to get my handlebars switched. (bikini beach bars, 2 inches taller, 4 inches wider, 2 inches more pull back). First I was told that it was a straight swap. Then I was told I would need a cable kit to make the swap work. I told them to go ahead. A month later they told me they couldn't get the cable kit through their network, and couldn't find one anywhere. I suggested a kit similar to the one used in this video, and pointed out where to get it. I was then told not to use that kit, it was of inferior quality, they would get a "superior" quality kit from a customizer in California, and priced it to me at more than double the price of the kit in this video. I called the California shop, and they sell the same kit used here. I went to the dealer to get my bike back, and was charged $210 dollars for 2 hours labor, "since they had to try out the bars I paid for to see if they would work." Anyway, keep up the great content, and ride safe.
I love that you let her do most of the work!! I'd love to have someone guide me through changing out bars since it's a pretty tedious process, but rewarding to learn! Love these videos for sure! 💘
I know you said Laurel was gonna do alot of the work, but seems she became the supervisor instead. I dig the fact yall work together on so many bikes and show one another how to do things as well.
To add a step in there especially if you have an older bike, its good practice to 'preload' the brake lever when tightening or loosening the switch housing or master cylinder. If you dont do that you risk braking off the little plastic piece for the brake light switch and end up having to replace the whole thing.
You make it look so easy now every time I watch you work on a bike I go wrench on mine! I always end up stripping a bolt but it’s an easy fix and so satisfy working on it myself!!
Another great video. It was cool that you guys had so much fun and got to hang out in the garage. Laurel showing off her 🔫s while wrenching on that bike. 💪
hardest part about doing handlebar jobs is ordering the right length cables and lines. Not trying to be sarcastic. but most people get ones that are too long. here, with both the clutch and brake looping over and back, it gives it a cool custom look that i don't think you intended, but stumbled upon. sometimes lucky works too. nice job.
Agreed! We were struggling for a bit on which way to move them around, but I’m visually really happy with the way it came out. Who knows, maybe we’ll adjust later. 😎
Hey guys. Looks good. A real quick way too, on pulling wire for internal wiring in bars. Use long Air Conditioning zip ties they move easy along tight bends. And rigid enough to pull quick. 👍
BTW Holy WOW! I thought I was the only one doing zip tie brake thing. Learned that after a couple of hours trying to bleed them out fully with no success. Got them close then pumped to a zip tie, ...overnight even...lol P.S. Air escapes out of the master cylinder. Should have a small vent pin hole in the top somewhere, or maybe displaces fluid in the reservoir.

I think solder and heat shrink over is best. That's how I did mine. Maybe he just didn't show that part. Only the heat shrink after... just maybe. I'm not a fan of crimp connectors in this application.
Solder did cause it to throw codes. We initially did those cheater solder and heat shrink all in one deals but it may have been because I didn't twist the wires together and just let the solder hold it together. It was throwing codes about bus error and losing connection to the left and right control modules. ended up cutting them out and using crimps and none of the codes returned. I'm guessing since Harley switched the sportsters to CAN bus in 2014 the solder interfered with the data signals just enough to throw errors even though everything still worked.

Sir i put extender cable for my break then the check engine pops up i ask then mechanic why the check engine pop up he said after i run then bike 50kms it will disappear becouse the computer box are adjusting for the new cable the we put in the for the break what d you think sir
i fished lines through pipes before and we used string with air pressure to force the string to where it was needed. as for those wires, should have started at the to handle and went down [ while hand . . or tape . . is over the part that does not need to be open , so the string can be exiting at the correct exit ] so that you could get 1 full pull . that way was ok, but took a bit longer. . . but it works. ( sorry, had some experience in that area a while back , just thought i would share some of it with you ) re-bleeding the master cylinder to get the air out is called '' tickling '' [ it is when you barely tug on the break handle to remove the air out of the cylinder chamber ] . the 2 copper washers are just regular crush washers . . . not banjo washers. banjo washers are 2 round ends connected by a single bridge . . . .which is also copper . ( and yes i also had experience in that area as well. . . . . worked at a dealership repairing warranty and worn out parts ) your '' P.S. '' was very funny.
I'm confused. Why doesn't the brake work immediately after adding the fluid? Why do you have to do the zip tie thing? I've replaced many front brake lines on street bikes, dirt bikes and quads and I've never had to do that.
So I’m gonna be adding Biltwell Frisco 2 bars on my 14’ iron it’s about a 7” rise from stock. But I’m been told you can stretch the brake like to fit.. but that seems sketchy to me, do you know what length brake line would be best? I don’t wanna have overwhelming amount of excess line. I wanna keep it as sleek as possible. But no forum states the manufacture brake line length. Thanks in advance! Also shout out from Ogden Utah! 🍻

Did this same job now my controls don't work the only button that works is the trip. Bike won't start like it has no power. Any thoughts?
Love the content. Have a 2019 iron myself. What would you recommend for a jack/stand/lift? About to do a handlebar swap myself and really looking for a reliable lift without breaking the bank. Know the sportsters can be iffy on what will fit safely under.
The more I watch this, the more I feel like I vastly underestimated the amount of work I’m going to have to do to fix my bike :/
When I use the zip tie to get the air out I always leave the cap loose and cover with towel so the air escapes
Hey Mr Block are those the 12 or 14 inch burly cables you used?
soo I'm going to start this process on my new 2020 48. Is there a place I can get torque specs for all the bolts (specifically the break line bolts) or is it just done by hand?
Great install vid Block. We all learn a ton from you. Bars look sweet!
Hopefully she is happy with the bars. Good video.
Looking to add some new bars to my 05 Road King over the weekend. Also, Chive on to Russ!
Wes* :) KCCO friend!
Sweet I've just ordered in these bars, very handy vid to watch for install tips 👍. Love ya work, watching all the way from New Zealand 🇳🇿 👊
Is it reasonably doable to complete this job without the bike lift?
Haven't even gotten to watch the video yet because I'm at work but I had to comment real quick to tell you I hate you. Video popped up in my notifications and my brain instantly went, Wes.. and Laurel and Laurel and Wes... 🎶
cant wait to hear the legit version if they go through with what they said in the last vid
It’s a catchy tune! 😂
@@BlockheadMoto if this RUclips thing doesn't work out you could have a career in jingle writing...🤣
It is very difficult to change the brake cable with abs?
Sir i put extender cable for my break then the check engine pops up i ask then mechanic why the check engine pop up he said after i run then bike 50kms it will disappear becouse the computer box are adjusting for the new cable the we put in the for the break what d you think sir
Something about this is so wholesome :)
i fished lines through pipes before and we used string with air pressure to force the string to where it was needed.
as for those wires, should have started at the to handle and went down [ while hand . . or tape . . is over the part that does not need to be open , so the string can be exiting at the correct exit ] so that you could get 1 full pull .
that way was ok, but took a bit longer. . . but it works.
( sorry, had some experience in that area a while back , just thought i would share some of it with you )
re-bleeding the master cylinder to get the air out is called '' tickling '' [ it is when you barely tug on the break handle to remove the air out of the cylinder chamber ] .
the 2 copper washers are just regular crush washers . . . not banjo washers. banjo washers are 2 round ends connected by a single bridge . . . .which is also copper .
( and yes i also had experience in that area as well. . . . . worked at a dealership repairing warranty and worn out parts )
your '' P.S. '' was very funny.
Is that a 2015?...I’m currently trying to find the same style and color for my bike but having no luck any help would be great. Thnx
Do you have to empty the gas tank in order to move it back
So you have to change the oil??
you don't need all that work for handle bars unless its wire extensions lol its super easy to swap bars on an 883 took me 1 hour
Why did you zip tie the brake lever if you don’t mind me asking ?
Great job ppl, I´ve never thought it´s so complicated to change handlebars....?!! wow..
Exactly
I learned a lot from this video. First that there’s a ton of stuff that goes into changing out handlebars but the most important is that’s why they have mechanics to do this stuff. I enjoy working on things but I am only home for 4 days per month so I’ll drop my bike off and pay them to do this while I’m out working and enjoy the finished product when I get back. Great video though, really enjoyable.
A puzzle? When do you find the time to work on a puzzle??
😂
Bars Still Sold out!!!! ARRRRRR
So what brand and how tall are those bars ?? Please help love the look
Bruuuuh... lol, it's said in the video, measured on video, AND the link to everything used is linked in the description. There's literally nothing more I can do to help besides actually installing them for you 😅
@@BlockheadMoto
Hahha soooooooo install them for me lol
Can’t decide between some Z bars or the Biltwell Frisco bars for my Sportster...
Damn if it was like a week ago it would’ve really helped since I’m getting new bars and couldn’t find any wiring for them lol thanks though still fun to watch
Cool way to demo procedure. Workshop is the Boss
do you need to buy new brake and clutch cables or can you get away with the stock cables?
It depends on how much rise you are putting on. Maybe, maybe not
That’s pretty awesome.
I just have one question ...
What bars are they ???
Link in description
*hovers over ban button, lol
Hahahahaha
I was messin with you dude lol 😂
Where did you get the clamp for the mirrors?
Anyone know what mirrors those are? Have the same handlebars but can't find mirrors that work mounted underneath
If I buy theses bars, do I have to internally wire them?
Maybe I missed it but aren't you suppose to change out the riser bushings when running apes?
Great walkthrough man. Very detailed. Can't believe all the things that go into this!
It’s crazy how complicated something like a handlebar change can be. At first glance it sounds so simple. Lol
Yeah, it’s definitely one of those deceiving modifications, lol
