BUY A 1200!!! Even for your first bike, 1200s aren't much bigger. I promise you'll outgrow the 883 in 6 months and want bigger and be stuck with a note. Everybody told me not to buy an 883 and I did it anyway and regret it lol.

    • @ItalianMetalHED

    • @rhoonah5849

Get the 48 with the 1200 instead. Same frame with more power and better styling in my opinion (except for the dinky 2.2 gallon peanut tank... looks great but sucks on the road especially where I ride a 2020 Street Glide Special with a 6 gallon tank so if that is an issue for you then definitely go with the 1200 Iron). My wife just traded her 2016 48 in because she outgrew it and now is riding a 2018 Deluxe with the M8 107. You'll outgrow an 883 faster than my wife outgrew her 1200.

Your 8-10 weeks late for me. Just bought my first Sporty. Bought it from a bike shop. Love at first sight, I didn't do any of this, I knew I was going in deep. Had the beginnings of where I wanted to go with her. 04' 1200c, raked wide glide front, full chrome dress & custom wheels. Switched out the drag bars for a set of 12" bars and a bunch of other stuff. Been working on her ever since, a labor of love. Found a pic of the her and Joe (the original owner) holding a trophy. Her name is 'Josie' now.

Nice ‘garage find’ in better than typical condition. Usually, the gas is bad and tank is in rough shape. As you said, you have to find all the little things that add up in repair bills fast. If you can’t do the repairs yourself, it can run into some serious money. Thanks for this overview of the process. Ride safe!

I would highly suggest checking and adjusting tire pressure BEFORE the test ride. Especially on such old tires. If one gives out on you could literally kill you. The most important safety feature aside from brakes IMO.

Always check inside the tank for rust. When looking at a running bike. Be sure when you show up the bike isn't warm from being ran. If so chances are owner warmed it up to hide something.

Look at your bars! The cables from the controls are coming out between the levers and the grips which caused my 2011 Harley I bought used to blow fuses in the fuse box and had to drive home in the dark with no lights. One of the first things I had to replace and address when I got mine.

    Winter/long time wake up advice:
    - Make sure the oil isnt crudy, gas isnt bad, and the batt has charge
    - pull the sparks and spray some fog oil in to coat the cylinders (will lube rings and cylinder walls)
    - use the starter as an electric oil pump to cycle some oil through the system (helps to have oil pressure gauge but 30s of starting should be good)
    - replace spark plugs and fire it up
    - use fuel stabilizer if it is going to sit
    - disconnect battery if it is going to sit for weeks...pull it and trickle charge if it will be months

another reason to use non-ethanol gas for anything that will be sitting unused for any more than a month is because ethanol attracts water into the fuel, which we all know is bad. water can easily clog jets and make it darn near impossible to start a bike.

i am not claiming that you are wrong BUT, from my personal experience, here in Fayetteville NC I use ethanol gas cuz its cheaper, and Ive left the gas sitting in jerrycans, in the motorcycle over the winter, in the suv whenever we go on 2-3 month vacations, and I have literally never had issues with the gas gumming up. I use to have a very old chevy blazer that my dad had. It had been parked for over 10 years. One day we just put a new battery and the gas worked fine. It wasn't stabilized or nothin, the car just started right up with a new battery.

You mentioned at the end of the video that you pay tax on the amount you put on the title. Its worth mentioning that depending on where you live, that's not always the case. For example, in Georgia, you pay tax on the VALUE of the bike. Not the amount you paid for it. I found that out when I bought my first bike. Just something to keep in mind. Check with your local tag office to find out how they calculate the tax.

As Dale said, it’s common etiquette if you want to test ride the bike to put cash in the sellers hand, in case you damage the bike somehow (drop, etc.) The agreement is if you damage it, you bought it 👍🏼

So coming from a Harley Davidson service advisor.. after a bike has been sitting the gas does go bad. How do you tell wether gas is bad or not? Pop the gas cap and smell the tank, if the smell is lite and not strong (will smell like paint thinner) it’s bad gas. Other than that. The gas is in good condition.. It’s not the end of the world running a bike/car with bad gas but it’s definitely something you don’t want. Bad gas won’t “gum” up as blockhead stated, what’s actually happening is the bad gas is eating away the inner liner of the tank which causes the gas to be “thicker”. If you ever buy a bike from a private seller, take it to a dealership and do a Safety Inspection. They will tell you everything that needs to be done for like 120$ bucks

    • @millenniomatic4856
      @millenniomatic4856 3 года назад +1

If you let gas sit too long in a tank. It will eat away all of the inner liner of the tank and you’ll pay around 1k to have a tank lined... long story short. Ride your bike, keep fresh gas in it and ride the sumbitch 🤙🏻

HARLEY NEEDS A Hooligan bike! Take the lightweight frame of the PAN AMERICAN(motor stressed part of frame, keeps weight down) not the heavy cradle frame with a 117 or 1250 engine. Offer optional bags for cruising. All these big bore kits for a 900 pound motorcycle don’t make sense vs more aluminum/carbon fiber to lighten the bike.

I'm on my 9th bike now, and since I live in a country that goes through all 4 seasons, I can only ride half the year. You think we bother pumping out old gas or putting "race" gas in our bikes after the winter? No. Bikes have always started right up. We do however typically remove the batteries and keep them charged throughout the winter.
Not once have I had any gas related issues starting any of my bikes after it's been sitting for 6+ months. I do typically ride to the gas station to top off the tank with fresh gas once I start the season though.
Same with my lawnmower, which I just fired up a few weeks ago after sitting for about 6-7 months with old gas. No problem. Maybe our gas is of better quality than yours, but I doubt it.

Hey Blockhead, I was at my local Harley Dealer yesterday to pick up my replacement license plate frame. I seat tested a Soft tail and a Street Bob. Salesman said that I looked pretty good (fitting wise) on both bikes. I was wondering if you could or have done a review on the Street Bob since they put a 114 in them?

hey blockhead i love the content that you provide, i feel it is very helpful. I'm looking at purchasing my first bike from the dealership either new or used; if possible, I'm a new rider; taking the rider class by Harley, I'm looking for something to grow into. Do you think the street bob is a good bike to grow into as a new rider?

Research and know what a salvage title is and ask before going over. For 99% of us, we don't want a bike with a salvage on it. Know how to look for it on the title and review the title ever before pulling out the cash. If the bike is going for a stupid cheap price, it's probably salvaged but some will try to pass it off as nothing and ask for blue book value.

  • @mikem4432

great video.. but in my opinion.. ALWAYS ASK FOR TITLE FIRST AND CHECK THE VIN EXACTLY IS MATCHING before LOOKING AT ANYTHING ELSE!!! and if they say the title is missing or the cat ate it.. WALK AWAY.. politely tell them that is a no starter, actually tell them this before you even go to see the bike and email a pic of the title and vin to be sure.. or you just wasted time going there.. do not listen or take any excuses, stories or other.. that is a deal breaker.
