    In case anyone was curious. This is a 13 inch Progressive 412. They did not mention if it was standard or heavy duty, but I’m guessing standard. Heavy duty is recommended for riders weighing 250+ or if you ride with a passenger more than 50% of the time. They both appear to be the same price.

I believe what you guys are doing is basically why people that ride Harleys get so into them.. it’s the deep personal relationship that’s built through customization, and the pain, glory, and satisfaction of the repair process, it’s what this brand was built upon.. the reason why people that own them love them, and why the people that don’t ride them don’t understand. It’s like dating the femme fatale / hot bad girl...you know she is going to do nothing but give you headaches and ruin your fucking life, but when you’re with her and things are rad, she makes you feel good, and boy do look cool with your arm around her waist.. keep up the great work guys, and ride safe!

    • @Evirthewarrior
      @Evirthewarrior 4 года назад +14

      The issues are mostly caused by motorcycle buyers honestly, they complain about ride height being too high, so Harley uses the shortest shocks they can get away with to lower the motorcycle and people still want it lower, the shocks they are putting on raises the height, thus having less people be able to flat foot the motorcycle, an important thing for most Harley riders, hence raised boots, shaved seats, shorter suspensions, there is a solution to having a better suspension at the same or similar height, but that moves the motorcycle into a higher price point. Ether that or they start using aluminum instead of steel and plastic instead of sheet metal, to cut weight on the motorcycle, but that turns off a lot of Harley buyers because it is "cheap plastic" or "cheap aluminum" thus people go elsewhere. What is Harley to do? Sell bikes at a loss or raise the price of motorcycle to match the increased price of the parts?

      Why should it not cost that much? What would you cut costs on to make the motorcycle cheaper? Less steel, more aluminum? thinner steel? Parts that are not as well built? Make the motorcycles overseas with cheaper labor cots and have them shipped over to the US? Where would you cut the costs? They do not bring any Motorcycles made overseas to the US. They built the factories overseas because building in the US and shipping it would make them WAY too expensive for places like India.

      @@patw9175 That is because people have different taste.
      Indeed, a brand new CB650 costs less and makes a lot of more power... but maybe power is not what you ar looking for. Looking in that way people would not buy anything into more expensive brands, now I'm speaking for instance on clothes. In yhe end of the day, who buys a HD buys the brand. Another point, if you want to modify, there is no comparison between mods available for HD and other brands. The aftermarket is probably made 50% or more for HDs, and probably Sportster are 15% of it.

    I've been riding Sportsters since my early 20s. My 1st was a 1968 XLH. A 900cc iron cylindered sprinter. It was re envisioned as a hardtail chooper making it a true Sportster Iron.😁 FYI, I'm 6'-3" & 170 - 180 lbs. (Depends on how much "stuff" I'm full of at the time.😉)
    Now I'm 70 & still riding Sportsters. I don't know for sure that it was sold as a Iron but it looks like one, rides like one & runs like one. It's my around town traffic negotiator. I also have a 1200 Custom. It's my mile eating cruiser. I ride it when I'm interested in seeing what's over the next hill or around the next bend.
    Just my opinion here, but when you change the geometry by putting taller shocks & as 1 commenter said, a taller seat on it you're moving it out of the spectrum the Iron was designed to excel in. In short you've created a baby cruiser. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @motorcyclefanboy2847
    @motorcyclefanboy2847 4 года назад +15

    “Why does harley put the short suspension on there” because first the designers at harley tell the styling department how the bike should be made, then the styling department ignores them and says short shocks look better and ruin the riding dynamics. Same issue the company had with the fxr. It was designed with tall suspension, then every year it got shorter or longer depending on if the engineers or designers won the argument that year.

    • @wyomatt
      @wyomatt 4 года назад +2

      Agreed. Additionally, they literally market this as a beginner bike toward girls and they want it as low as possible because they’ve convinced them lower is easier and less intimidating. No self-respecting man would ever put a leg over an 883 right? Well except me....its my 2nd favorite bike when I’m not on the Ducati ;)

  • @jacquescrusan9500
    @jacquescrusan9500 4 года назад +7

    simple explanation: changing the sag in the rear changes the suspension geometry in the back and the front. There's now more negative rake on the chassis, which make the rake of the front forks more steep and aggressive. Trail is also reduced. Sum product: A more responsive, flickable and slightly unstable (do no confuse that with unsafe/unridable). Makes sense.

    • @apolokia
      @apolokia 3 года назад +3

      I just did a quick calculation, and if my math is correct, the rake changes to approximately 28° and the trail 3.8" instead of 4.6". Not much, but that is half way to a lot of the sport bikes.

That in-turn raises ride height, thus having less people want to buy them, because they cant flat foot the motorcycle.

I'm pretty sure the stock shocks were toast, I would ride down our gravel road and lean back on the pack on the sissy bar and my teeth would chatter and it would even vibrate my eyes, messed with my vision LOL. I haven't had a chance to try these out yet because it just snowed a whole lot, maybe next week. But anything is better than what I had.

They do not even put a lock on gascap that is bs, allso had to buy oil resavor cap with lock bc the spring loaded one popped off on highway lost oil pressure and had 2 do a 4 lane emergency stop, these 2 mods were $200, front controls $1000 installed on a brand new Mc, and of course had to spend $300 for the 412s, mirror risers $45, get less than 40mpg or 115miles on a full tank, you apologize and say it's a blank canvas, I say it's built shitty so they can get more cash out of you, allso had to buy a 1inc up 1.5inc back seat $400+ to bring Mc up to 29inc laden only good thing is it covers up that ugly ass back fender, allso a +1inc kickstand $75 so Mc won't fall over, so I put a bit over $2000 on a brand new Mc just to ride safely with a bit of comfort, stop apologizing for those assholes a mc should be a joy to ride, everytime I walk into dealer I expect them to pull a gun and empty my pockets and that friends sucks, no gascap lock they have only been on every street bike since 1980, don't apologize for there duchbagery.

    "It was wallowy, a little slow and ponderous." What does that mean in regards to a motorcycle suspension? He sounds like my snooty wine friend describing a bottle of cabernet Sauvignon he didn't like. : ) I put progressive springs on the front forks and swapped out the rear stock shocks on my 70's CB750 and I can't really tell the difference. Maybe because I've only been riding 2 years and I don't really pick up on the nuances of suspensions. How do we enter to win that bike?

    • @christophervincent77
      @christophervincent77 4 года назад

      The big reason in this case is because the lift in the rear changed the fork and seating geometry just enough to be noticeable. That combined with the better comfort of the springs themselves... I don't doubt it was transformative. Sometimes they can't articulate that very well because they aren't all that mechanically inclined to be honest. They don't really understand why it feels different - they just know that it does.

    Nice, excellent choice on those shocks. I wonder why you guys didn't invest in a set of new springs for the front? Fairly cheap and easys to do... btw, most bolts on a Harley need Loctite to keep them from rattling out ;) And if you change the ride height by a couple of inches, at least check the belt tension, better safe than sorry... Curious about the next steps, personally, I would tackle that front brake system, since stopping a bike never was a priority with Harley "designers" :p

      I'm thinking about improving the front suspension of my 883. What do you recommend?

    • @0neyedK
      @0neyedK Год назад

      @@rodrigosoares9025 There’s no simple answer to that question. Any (progressive) fork spring set of a reputable brand (Progressive Suspension, Wilbers, Hyperpro) will outperform the stock springs. Bonus is that it’s a fairly simple job on a sporty, no fancy tools needed. A step up would be a linear spring set, specifically for your weight and general riding style. Unlees you really know what you are doing, you best visit a suspension specialist shop. Choosing the wrong linear spring can lead to a worse result than stock. If you want to spend a fair amount more, a cartridge kit can be fitted. Adreani makes those for models 2009 and up. Same warning as with the wrong linear springs. Adjust the cartridge kit wrong, and you improved nada…
      I should've started with this, but if your bike has 10k+ miles of is older than 5 years, it's probably the best idea to visit a suspension shop, have the fork legs fully serviced and the best springs within you budget fitted... GL!

    These come with such small shocks out of the factory because in the cruiser world low seat height is a coveted thing. For years they offered the 883 Low. Before many riders would “slam” their sporties. So the 883 iron comes slammed. Harley is also trying to attract women riders who are shorter and tend to lack confidence-low seat height takes care of both. The USA also has the highest percentage of foreign born residents in over 100yrs. They tend to be shorter than the natives.

      The shocks are middle of the road on purpose. The premium shocks YOU want, for your riding style, may be very different from what another buyer needs.
      Guys tend to get a more sport tuned suspension, as this is their "play bike", chicks often choose a softer suspension, as this is their do it all ride.
      There are thousands of women that have built up their sporties specifically to ride across the country. Especially since they switched to rubber mounted engines.
