    My '06 Sportster Custom had 12" stock shocks. I put Progressive 412s on it that were 13 1/2'' and put 1'' lowering blocks to angle them back slightly and the ride height was only raised about 3/4'' to 1''. It's nice having that much travel and the bike hasn't bottomed out since. Without the lowering blocks, you could see daylight above the tire.😄

    Putting "Sport" back into the Sportster. Next up a basic "dump and pump" fork oil service? Some fork preload adjustment caps will also give some ability to adjust for rider weight, sag numbers and allow more balance suspension response. A $70 cap set will do the same as a $300 cap set for this.

    I have two sporty's.
    One with the 15" Progressive shocks. (That one has a two into one pipe... so no clearance issues. )
    The other one, same pipes as the bike in vid... but with ohlins, set at 13 3/4"...
    That's all I can get without clearance issues with those pipes.
    As you pointed out, much better handling, ride, and clearance compared to stock.

      And think about buying a new shock for my iron 883. Do i go for those 13 inches or a 12 inch? Cuz i REALLY want to upgrade the rear suspension . I also do carry a pillion sometimes.
      What would you recommend?

    • @fishwithlungs
      @fishwithlungs Год назад +1

      Check the outside surface of the drive belt with those 15" shocks. On rubbermount Sporty anything more than 14" will get the belt rubbing on the inside of your sprocket cover, below and behind the sprocket. I run 13", and have the cover removed after discovering rub mark on the belt (and inside the sprocket cover). Looks better without it anyway. Disregard if you did a chain conversion.

      @@hetfield_75 depends on budget. For the lower budget I think these Burly 13” are about as good as it gets. I’d stay away from Legends, they’re about as good as progressives/burly but cost 4 times as much. If you wanna go all out Either Fox or Ohlins is the way to go. Ohlins has a really nice set of standard shocks for around the 600usd mark.

    • @carlosvejar3938

      Why would you buy a sportster when you care about performance

    • @kleinbottled79
      @kleinbottled79 Год назад +4

      "Will always" is a bit extreme. The twin Ohlines setup on a Triumph Thruxton R is going to outperform the budget mono shock on an MT-03 for instance. But dollar for dollar, if one is designing a bike from scratch - yes, the mono is going to perform better. As for the reasons they ever still use dual shocks? It looks old school for one, for two it frees up that space under the tail section if you want/need that space for something else.
      Yeah, it is a serious modification (more into the realm of customization) to switch from twin to mono, you're almost definitely going to have to heavily modify the frame and/or swingarm. Other components will likely need to be moved as well. I've seen a couple custom classics converted to mono-shock and I like the look myself. Retro-modern. Pretty rare though, and many people apparently think it's dumb, think it ruins the classic lines. Shurg.

      I mean, your not wrong. The whole point of the soft tail design was to make a bike that looked like a rigid frame while still giving the dentists and wannabe toughs cushion for their bum-bums.

      Which just makes me wonder why HD didn’t sell a two-tone color scheme for the shocks. They already charge extra for any color that isn’t “vivid black,” so it would have been on brand.

    Why are you looking for height? It’s a cruiser, not an adventure bike or a scrambler…Plus you change the rear shocks and you do nothing with the front springs it’s like putting a bad ass suspension on the rear of a car and leaving this crappy stock suspension upfront what’s the point

      @@jonnymac8925 I am not an elitist. You can ride a grom, or a s1000rr. A rebel 250, or an H2, we all have the same wind in our faces and against our knees. My issue is with Harley riders is that they are a cult. They pay extravagant prices for a brand name product which has questionable reliability, and worse performance than any other brand. That's their prerogative though. If they want to ride a Harley, that's fine. But they have an almost jingoistic attitude toward any other rider and they pretend like Harley Davidson products are superior to anything else. That you aren't a real rider if it's not a harley.

    Sportster is nice bike but i more prefer ntv 650 revere 👌🏻🤷🏻‍♂️ lighter ,shorter wheelbase ,lil more lean angle lil more weight at front similar acceleration ,in good weather on the same tire at track ntv be faster than sportster 1200 👌🏻shaft in h-d is better for daily than chain in terms of maintenance but still shaft is best 🤓👌🏻what h-d have better is lowend torque thanks huge displacement 👌🏻 but still in ntv is better than in me last bike cb 500 at low rpm for elasticity according to dyno graph which im found yesterday 👌🏻😁
