Yammie I've been watching your vids for years now and I have to say, your method of reviewing motorcycles is flawed. And here's why...
When you review a motorcycle you always have an internal bias and tend to compare whatever bike you ride to something that you already know you love. Often times the bikes you are comparing are completely different and you miss the essence of what the bike is, who it's for, what kind of riding it's for, etc. You don't seem to review a motorcycle as a standalone bike and give them the credit they deserve.
I consider myself an enthusiest and have owned 15 or 16 bikes over the years. From a 955i to a TW200 to an R1 to a Sportster XR1200X and some older bikes like an 86' VMAX and Fazer 700. I worked at a Harley dealership and rode just about every model in the last 30 years as well as just about every trade in. Every bike has a story. Every bike has a personality. Every bike has a history. I just feel your review method could be a little different to do bikes more justice. I'm open to sharing my experience and knowledge with you guys if you want. Long live motorcycles.

I've been on a couple harleys. Sporty to road King. And a heavily modded dyna.
Pretty lack luster even compared to a 800cc VTX.
They really don't make good quality stuff. Accept the paint jobs and merch.
I'm not surprised that you had the reaction you did. Mine was the same...
"What the fuck? I thought this 1800cc murican powerhouse would smoke my 600cc rice rocket!" Nope. A 400cc ninja will outpull a Harley any day. It's pretty sad...

The Sportster has a engine type that was built for speed. That's why it has a quad-cam engine design. The Sportster was created in 1957 to compete against the European Bikes back then. Sportster's have been used for Road Racing in the 1960's and Flat Track, Hooligan, and Drag Racing all the way to present times.
Why is this type of HD V-Twin the best HD Air-Cooled Platform for racing? It's Quad-Cam engine design allows the push-rods to be able to align themselves straight and vertical with the lifters and rocker-arms and not at an angle. In a push-rod motor this helps when trying to hit higher rpm's.
The big block HD's where never designed to be race motors. They were designed to be air-cooled engines that can run all day at Freeway speeds; they were designed to be touring engines. But, because of those that want to say that they ride the Big HD's, the Sportster has been frowned upon by those that want to be Macho Men.
The Sportster platform, especially the non rubber-mounted one's, are awesome platforms for performance upgrades for cornering and other forms of performance riding; you can turn a Sportster into just about any kind of Bike you desire. You cannot do that with Dyna's or any other Big Block HD.
Sportster are awesome Bikes when you know more about them and what they were originally intended to be. They are the longest running and existing HD Motorcycle Platform. So, when I hear People call them a Girls Bike or Beginner's Bike or not a Real HD, I know I am listening to somebody that doesn't really know much about HD's... Peace, Stiletto :-)

Stiletto Big thumbs up for steel mounted sportsters. Compared my brother’s ‘04 to an ‘07 Sportster that I was interested in buying and the experience felt significantly more dull with rubber mounts.
Granted, my brother’s bike was already built to the teeth from the previous owner, but the massive vibrations made the bike feel like a rickety vintage go-cart death trap. That’s strangely the allure of owning a HD though.
On the other hand, Japanese bikes have felt like high tech spacecrafts from the future since riding a Sportster.

The thing to remember about a Dyna is that they can do it all. Want to rip wheelies? You got it. Want to throw bags on it and do some touring? Go ahead. Want to build something to have some fun through canyons or tracks? Do it. It’s not going to be the best at any of those, but it’ll do all of them with a smile.

for me its more fun riding a small bike slow.. the sound of a sportster with some pipes and the wind in your face is what its about. some people wonder why harley guys dont like to wear helmets.. its about the experience of riding and freedom, also the fact that you aren't trying to get from a to b as fast as possible. its just more comfortable to ride a cruiser style bike as well.

The Dyna has its time and place and purpose for sure. And I think us Dyna bro’s kinda like that charm about it. It’s not perfect, it’s heavy, not that sporty, but god damn it fills that “tingle in my balls” feeling and love for motorcycling for me personally. I sometimes just go sit and look at it just because it’s so beautiful to me. Fits my tastes, I don’t like going fast or carving up twisties, and it has a cool factor beyond others for me. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I also wonder if the owner of that Bob did anything as far as stage 1 kit or at least getting the ECU flashed. Because if it's straight from the factory then yeah, he was just chugging along. Harleys are like the Master Sword. You have to level it up to unlock its true potential. That's one of the points of owning a Harley. Make it yours. Until then they're pretty anemic. I'd like to see him ride Blockheads 131 Low Rider S or Shade Tree's Road King Kong.

I rode a 2020 Lowrider S for several months. I put 4000 miles on it. I sold it for a new 2020 Iron 883. I have to say that I love both motorcycles; however, that bullet proof, tried and true, 883 really puts a smile on my face. The vibration is more in the feet on the 883, but less in the hands. I love the sound of the 883. I love how easy it is to lean into curves and back from a parking spot. I love the lower price of the 883, and that means a lower price on everything. Lower taxes, lower insurance, less expensive Michelin Scorcher tires that I like, lower price and simpler service. The Iron 883 really brings me joy.

I went from a Sportster XL883L with 412 shocks and new front springs and fluid to a Road King. The Road King is peak Harley, no huge faring, a rear air suspension and all day comfort. Floor boards mean you can put the balls of your feet on the floorboard for control or your whole foot for a more relaxed ride. The Road King handles so much better than the Sportster. I would be super curious to see what you guys think of a Twin Cam Road King. I bomb up and down the Colorado Mountains on mine and it is much better than the sportster.

Now, I plan on adding different bikes in the riding time I have left (I’ll be 60 soon) and sport bikes and/or naked bikes are on the list for consideration as my wallet allows, so I may have a different opinion after riding those bikes. In any case, I won’t part with my Dyna. It helps that it’s beautiful bike.😎

Would be interesting to hear their impressions. Not something that's so fast that it's all about the speed; more something different where the difference can be felt on multiple levels.

The scout stomps the sportster stupid. They would really like it because it’s numbers compare with fz07. As far as a Harley-Davidson rider on other bikes... I’ve ridden other bikes. In my heart of hearts, the triumph and Ducati scramblers speak to me in a way no Harley could. I’ve ridden nakeds, liters, adventures, tourers (other than Harley), metric cruisers... For the majority of my riding, the Harley softail is the best bike for me. I ride for hours at a time, usually with a passenger, up and down the Rocky Mountains. I see why people like other bikes, but I have the Swiss army bike that does everything I need, while others may do some parts better, none would do it all that well. Most sporty bikes don’t let me run for half as long. Are they faster? Yep. Are they more nimble? Yep. But my softail will let me go a little slower on a twisty road for four times as long comfortably. My naked riding buddy didn’t believe me till I showed him. He is shopping for a Harley-Davidson or Indian now. I joke that I’m not a biker, I ride my bike way more that them... haha. I put 19000 on a dyna I had for 2 1/2 years, just to show what I’m saying.

The Sportster, Dyna, and Softail models are the quintessential Harleys. While other bikes such as touring model Harleys, sportbikes, and even the Busa, will always tell you what they are and you can't really change them enough to get away from that. The Sportster, Dyna, and Softail models are book of blank pages that the owner writes his or her own story in.
The Dyna models were plagued with engineering issues that eventually led to the model's demise. It was these issues that kept the bike from being very popular until the show Sons of Anarchy. Unfortunately, that was also how the model's issues came to receive a lot more scrutiny.
I believe that you will find that the bike you were riding was bone stock. Harley has always left a lot of power in the engine that the owner could either customize the engine to bring out that power or not. The 103 can be brought up to over 100HP and well over 100lb/ft of torque.
Buying a Harley is more than purchasing a bike. You are entering a worldwide community of the Harley network. Harley dealerships are very social places, and gatherings happen every week. You can travel the world and always have a place to stop and rest for a few minutes, get a free cold beverage, and hang out with other riders. On weekends, there is usually food, music, entertainment, and quite frequently a charity ride.
I am finding out that it is a lot more than just a bike, and gaining a lot of respect for the Harley community.
Coming from a Victory fan boy.

Got a Dyna for my first motorcycle, an FXDF. I was not comfortable on the Sportster with my 6'2 height, nearly 37 inch inseam. Knees were basically in my chest. So, just to try it, I test rode the Dyna Fat Bob and felt much more comfortable. It already had Vance and Hines full exhaust and a FP3 on it when I bought it, so not sure if it performs better than your Street Bob. I have ridden Mt. Lemmon on it and thought it felt very comfortable, even pushing my skill level. For perspective, I have been riding about 8 months, with a few courses taken. Not too much experience, but regardless, for a taller rider, especially with longer legs, AND more maturity, I would opt for the bigger Dyna, despite the stigma the Dyna has. Chief Darkhorse is the next endeavor.

    • @realjarvis
      @realjarvis 3 года назад

Yeah, I guess I could have. Glad I went with the Dyna Fat Bob though. Not scary power, but plenty to get out of traffic, stock forward controls, didn't have to mod anything when I bought it, and I was underwhelmed test riding a Sportster 48 after riding my Dyna for about 3 weeks. Even though it's not a "beginner bike," (then again by most standards neither is a Sportster, it's just a beginner Harley) the way I ride is still very cautious and responsible. I have gotten very comfortable and familiar with how it rides though, dirt roads and all. Planning a motocamping trip next summer from AZ to Yellowstone, then down through the Redwoods and Highway 1 back to AZ. Longer trips are more attainable with the greater fuel capacity, another reason I went for the Dyna Fat Bob. And, with your height, I highly recommend a LePera Daddy Long Legs seat, by the way. World of difference compared to stock, even though the stock seat on the FXDF was pretty comfortable.

I wouldn’t want it. I wanted a H-D for all the good and bad. I carried H-D brochures around with me as a truck driver until the vibration of the truck wore the color off the cover. More than 20 years after that, I got one; loved it.

But I do like a big v-twin cruiser for the braps and throwing some 13” shocks with a 2-1 exhaust, cams, and a tune. It’s not about being the fastest because there’s always someone faster and the street isn’t a track. It’s about what puts a smile on your face and is a ton of fun and that is what a dyna does very well. If I can do some rolling burnies and occasionally some whoolies in a parking lot. That makes for some extra fun on a great cruiser platform. Also just look at them. They’re beautiful. Well not that one. That guy has bad taste. But I got compliments everywhere on my old street bob and that was just because the factory charcoal pearl paint pops like a mf in the light

Harley’s have WW2 heavy, huge chain driven primary vs moderngear drive. Plus those really long pushrods hinder higher rpm cams for horsepower.

My 1200 sporty is a stage 4 plus other mods at more than 100hp. Cost a lot of money though but faster than the majority of bigger ones. Mine is a 96 and vibrates like crazy sitting at a light and the heavy pumping exhaust out of the V & H pipes

“I don’t mean to compare” continues to compare it to every bike😂
