Why the Omega Seamaster Is Better Than the Rolex Submariner | Watchfinder & Co.

- Let’s cut to the chase: if you get the opportunity to buy a Rolex Submariner 116610LV at RRP, do it. Take out all the finance, put it on all the credit cards, and if you don’t like it you can sell it and make a tidy profit. Then you can take that profit and buy one of these: the Omega Seamaster Professional. Here’s why that’s the better option.

I guess James Bond didn't want to be on a waiting list for a Rolex and opted for the Omega instead. Spectre.
gonshocks James Bond’s first watch was the Rolex.
@@jimmyf1312 that was before wait lists
James Bond wore Rolex in the Ian Fleming books. Omega in the later films was product placement.
@@bombazine2 But in the early Bond days Rolex was an affordable brand that a decent wage could afford. Service men were issued them or bought them as they were a tool watch where now they're a luxury statement.
Doyoumushroom yep. This is true. Rolex only make 3 tool watches now. Deepsea, Explorer and Milgaus. The only models not available in precious metals
3:42 - You gave me bad advice! I tried walking to my nearest Omega store, and it took three hours and they were shut when I got there. It turns out they aren't open in the middle of the night.

"Omega makes watches; Rolex sells watches."
Rolex sells spots on waiting lists, you can't actually buy the watches.
@Jee Vang They pay gray market prices (at least for the steel sport models).
Rolex is the biggest criminal gang of bastards on the planet. You send a valuable watch in and they will swap out and hold onto those parts, to use for their own nefarious agenda. Despicable criminal bastards.
gmshadowtraders - must admit I’d heard that too by a friend who restores vintage Rolexes. Shameful.
they do that so it doesn't end up on fake watches.

You buy a Rolex to impress others. You buy a Seamaster or a Grand Seiko to impress yourself.
You just buy a rolex when you are filthy rich, most of the people won't know what a seiko is lmao
the kind of person who will be impressed by a Rolex will probably be impressed by an Omega too...
No one is impressed by a Rolex....

You're right for a lot of people, but it depends where you live, and the company you keep. I'd like a Rolex Explorer 1, simply because I like the watch, but the truth is, over 90% of my friends think a Rolex is a watch for tw@s.

Omega have proven to be the superlative brand over my 2 decades of owning a variety of watches. They run more consistently, feel ultra high quality and can hold up to daily use. Even when I spent years as a studio drummer wearing a Speedmaster they kept amazing time with no issues due to the increased G forces or shocks. I have a 50th anniversary Seamaster GMT that has never been serviced. Wasn't even on a winder for most of it's life and still keeps perfect time and has near the guaranteed power reserve. Rolex by contrast, if worn daily shows more wear and in my experiences the bracelets and deployment clasps don't feel near as crisp as they did when new. I actually let one go because it felt like that car that was getting on in years and you could feel the looming unreliability. Also, in a world of lovely case backs Rolex has the most unremarkable case backs in existence, good only for engraving. "Son, here is your Rolex, sorry I couldn't see past the hype and buy you that Omega." Other than A. Lange und Sohne I lust for no other watch more than any one of my Omegas. Cheers on a bloody brilliant channel.
I agree with you I have both GMTs Omega and Rolex, omega's rated for 300m when Rolex only 100m, my Seamaster performed better than rolex at -30 deg C, Rolex lost more time, Maybe Omega is technically way better watch, but Rolex started the whole savoir faire...and thus some credit there....
Brilliantly said.
The Rolex name appeals to the masses; it is the most valuable watch brand in the world through recognition. About everyone knows what a Rolex is.
Omega is not as well known but I think their co-axial calibres are little marvels of timekeeping performances.
Well said

We aquire formulated personality and contextual meaning in an effort to make it part of our own identities. Buy what you enjoy and leave others to do the same. An excellent video!
Agreed. Strangely, to me anyway, I am finding myself enjoy cheaper fun and interesting watches more than the grails. I was in an omega AD and after trying on the Seamaster I walked away. It is amazing just not my type of enjoyable.
agreed much... if i buy a Omega, Tag Heuer, Seiko, IWC, etc.. i just can't help having the feeling that i'm giving the impression that i simply can't afford a Rolex and deep down i know i would rather own a Rolex. Another thing is if i'm paying thousands on a watch, i pretty much would want it's value to hold over the years. No offense though, it is how it is 😬

Yes. Fantastic video. Miraculously glossed over the awful bezel action of the SeaMaster.
One of the best comparison videos I've seen. I like both but obviously the Omega is way more obtainable and with the blue face looks incredible! Well done. I will own an Omega one day!

@True Gooner Omega owned by Swatch too. Made by Swatch too. Oh, well.
Rolex could release a statement saying that the new Seamaster is a “better” watch than the current Sub. People would still lust after the Sub because they can’t get it. Human nature I guess.
Best comment ever on this matter...!
@guess what funny name, hehe, which ones did you bought? Most retailers are out of stock for the performance watches. They are getting hard to catch.
guess what false information? I’m a Rolex fan so chill out. Good for you only having to wait a matter of weeks for your SS models. 99% of watch fans know it is near on impossible to get a Sub LV at retail. Hence the whole idea of Watchfinder’s video. 👍🏼
@guess what How vastly over-inflated were the prices that you were able to find them so easily?
Try finding a Daytona or a GMT "batman".
"False scarcity" Hit the nail on it's head!
I have a submariner and a mid size seamaster, right now on rolex forums AD’s have been telling customers that they should expect a 6 month waiting list to get one. Right now not going to lie, all the stories and posts I have seen in rolex watch forums are how their turnaround wait time was for about a week/month or so haha
They are both nice pieces. However, I actually think the Omega with its George Daniels movement is technically superior. To me the greatest watches are ones where engineering and art are combined most successfully. The Omega wins here as a total package.
I know real watch guys that have the Rolex as part of their collection and THAT Rolex customer I greatly respect. Unfortunately for me Rolex is tarnished as a brand because so many of their customers are people who aren't really into watches, they just want the image. Its the thing to buy when the big bonus check comes in. They don't really care about what they own or want to know many of the details. Sort of like the BMW owner who has no idea what DI intake valve deposits are.
The Rolex is probably the better investment if you buy with concern for selling. If you buy to own/enjoy and are not likely to sell go for the Omega.
You’ve summed it up perfectly!
If you are selling watches for money, you need to get a better job in life which is paying money. 💰 😂

I love both, but if I had to pick just one, it’d be the Omega Seamaster. It’s just a better watch overall.
That means you lied about owning a Rolex.
@@fastcougar3200 What do you mean? How did I lie?
In the old days, my dad would walk in to a store and pick a Rolex to reward himself in every new chapter of his career, that was when they could be purchased easily at discounts, it was with no intention of flipping when owning a Rolex. I am a dad now and couldn't do the same based on how Rolex has became, I guess Omega is the new Rolex in this generation..
InsideSomething I bought my first Rolex - a GMT master, as a reward for surviving my first offshore contract. I did 12 months in the Middle East when it really was a hardship posting.....
Every luxury watch is way more expensive than decades ago. Omega is no exception.
Tudor may also be the new Rolex for this generation.
More like Casio is the new Rolex given the current world economy :)
Omega is nothing near Rolex.
Rolex marketing can backfire as well, as many people who buy them are looking for status only. That is one of the reasons that steered me towards buying an Omega as my first luxury watch.
Throngdorr Mighty that’s very right, but to me Rolex became too recognizable as it completely penetrated into the pop culture. I love their watches, but the brand seems to have a “I have succeeded” connotation I was not going for. Some other brands are a bit more discreet.
I agree. When I first got into watches properly, the excessive hype around Rolex, and the resulting baggage that comes with wearing one (and endless “is that a real Rolex”) honestly turned me off the brand.
I’ve since come to appreciate that they are excellent watches (not particularly my taste, but that’s irrelevant), however the hype and baggage is still very real and still pushes me away from the brand.
Geoffrey Pearce if you live by your means no one will ask you if youre wearing a real one.

Love WatchfinderCo’s “anti-Rolex” rivalry against Hodinkee’s praise for the Ro’s
Well, Hodinkee;s also praising Omega since they became retailers. Both of them, just some scammers.
what is the best price you find for the seamaster now, 2021?
I have sold both brands, and as nice as the Rolex is, it is not that gold idol that Indiana Jones steals from the temple. The hype I saw when selling Rolex did not seem healthy to me. Games being played by everyone involved, dreams of "rolling" the watch for a profit by clients, it was not pretty to be any part of that circus. Omega dive watches have a cool history, can go head to head engineering wise with any dive watch, bar-none, and my clients for those watches loved the looks and liked the adventurous spirit of the watch. It was fun selling Omega watches. I sold my Rolex watches and still have my 1996 Seamaster. I hate silly games at the sales counter, it is embarrassing to be a professional sales person and have any part in that, so my money is on Omega all day long.
I agree with you. The supply/demand/profit game Rolex has been playing for years makes me not want a Rolex. I also prefer Omega every time over Rolex for a few reasons, that being perhaps the biggest. I also despise the general public impression of someone wearing a Rolex, which tends to be that it's a fake, you're wealthy, or you're a egotist wanting attention. I understand that Rolex is a high-value company selling high-value watches, but to play with their present/future customers as they do is a turn off to me. I don't play games and I don't like that being done to me. There are a couple Rolexes I might consider saving up to buy if the "You can't buy one." climate didn't exist, but instead, I will save for buying my Planet Ocean someday.👍
A friend who is a watch repairman (and who sees and repairs a lot of both brands) said something similar. The Rolex is a nice watch, but you are paying a lot for the name. Omega is better made.
Gabriel Vazquez I am glad you have the money to waste. Once you walk out of an Omega store with a purchase, you have just lost half of the value.
If you're buying a Rolex thinking you're going to make money on it, the one wasting money is you. In the first place, the only Rolex watches you have any hope of making a profit on are their sports models, and they have jacked up the price on them so much that I doubt you'll make anything unless you hang on to it for twenty years, and good luck getting them to sell one to you if you just walk in to a boutique. The rest of their line can be bought online or at any pawn shop at a discount all day long. Second, watches are not investments, they are timepieces made to be worn. If you want to make an investment buy Apple stock. I'll take an Omega any day of the week, and it's not a"waste of money" because I'm never selling that watch. Rolex watches are not any better than an Omega, but if you wish to spend ten grand on a steel dive watch it's your cash to waste, so go right ahead and buy it.
@@markreynolds9135 More than one way to define value. If you come to love the Omega even more that the day you bought it, then the value actually INCREASED .
this was the best analogy I have ever heard on this subject. Its absolutely true and has been for years. All you have to do is pick up a Rolex and then an Omega. Its very obvious. I have both and agree with this completely
Within the last 2 years the Seamaster list price has risen from £2900 to £4170 with the latest price rise. It was a no brainer if you were looking for a great dive watch but I’m not so sure at its current price. Add to that the excellent Tudor offerings and I’m even further away from thinking about a Seamaster.
Thank you for all of the great videos, its helped me a lot to understand the industry. I recently purchased an Omega Seamaster and I'm completely thrilled with it. Honestly, I didn't know it would be that nice of a watch. ( Yes I'm subscribed ;) )

Well done to Watchfinder for heaping praise on an Omega, a brand owned by Swatch and not Richemont. The lack of supply of sports Rolex watches is very tedious (and that's coming from a Rolex GMT Master II owner). I still love the 2531.80 Seamaster the most because of being a Bond fan, but you got me hooked on the newer models in how you described it. The wave dial on the older version looks better to me but the craftsmanship of the new makes it desirable.
I guess you did mean 2531.80... 7 months old post and no-one pointed it out...

Brilliant review! I have had the Rolex "Hulk" for a short time, and just got the Omega Diver 300M. Side by side, the Omega does seem to be the better watch. Great looks, great feel on the wrist, extremely accurate, and very legible. But, you are correct: There is "Something" about the Rolex. Solid as a bank vault, excellent bracelet, beautiful workmanship, and a certain cachet the Omega has not yet acquired. Daily wearing? I'll take the Omega.
I agree, it is all about the feeling, how it makes you feel. There are no prices, waiting lists, specs, reasons, movements, build quality, heritage. Only one question: which watch do you want?
For me it was/is the Omega. Even if it was at the same price as the sub. Even if there was a waiting list as well. As a child I was dreaming of an Omega, not a Rolex. I guess each to their own.
It's interesting to see how the Richemont group condemns Rolex's watches, by complimenting Swatch's watches. Indeed, the adage that "... my enemy's enemy is my friend" must be true.
Justin Chai imho they nailed it despite who owns Watchfinder. I don’t think they’re bagging on Rolex per se. I think they are talking about the image Rolex projects. Plus the supposed shortage of desirable Rolex watches. They sell watches by getting those who can afford it to buy their less desirable watches to get the one they want. ie sell more watches.
I think they nailed it. Im an omega guy but there is no question rolex are leaps ahead when it comes to image. If it was all about build quality we’d all be wearing seikos
@@dtm4trix You are correct.
You are joking? Watch finder is always raving on about Rolex’s to a point where they have increased demand which in turn has helped them sell more of them at a even greater ridiculously over inflated price. Of course you can’t play this game for ever because the prices with start to catch up with watches that are considerably better. There’s also a point where people let go of the elastic and won’t play the game anymore too which is starting to happen already. As for the Omega being better well it is. How many experts do you need to tell you it is? I love them both but the Omega in this case is a better watch.
@@dtm4trix That's exactly what they do, which is why I came to the conclusion that Rolex is not a real luxury brand. True luxury brands do not have to resort to hucksterism to sell their products. You would never see Cartier or Tiffany & Co. behaving in such a shabby and disreputable fashion with their clients.
I think that Omega would do good to make their seamasters just a bit smaller, I feel that would make the seamaster so much more appealing to people with smaller wrists, the 42mm is just a bit too large
Honestly a 40 would be perfect
I agree but have you tried it on wrist? It wears more like a 40mm than our expect.
This watch wears like a 40
Own a SM with this ref and it wears just right (17,5 cm wrist)
I picked up the 41.5mm also have the 41mm sub, it’s still about three times heavier than the sub!
Nicely put, I’ve owned a sea master and currently own a sub and both are brilliant watches, I literally just walked past a jewellers and saw a sub date in the window and jumped on it, otherwise I would have been perfectly happy with the Omega. Probably 😆🤷♂️
Mido multi-star and MidoMultifort and a RADO Diastar. All vintage and need service can you recommend a reputable watchmaker? I'm in NYC.
I've got the same Omega you show in this video. My one VERY BIG gripe about the gray dial is that under normal lighting the hands are very difficult to see and the date is nearly invisible. In the dark the lume does nothing to help with readability. Wish I had purchased the blue dial version.
Good to know I’m gonna buy the blue one
And I’ll buy the black dial one 👍🏻
And I’ll buy a calculator watch because I’m broke 👍
Omega seems to have an issue making lume that's actually useful. My Aqua Terra is basically impossible to read in the dark because the tiny application on the minute hand overlaps the indices and makes it difficult locate.
I still like the grey dial SMP the best. The dial is the most dynamic by far.
Omega craps all over Rolex from a technical and and in many cases, from an aesthetic perspective. Omega in my books is far innovative!
That is pure crap.
Nope

Before I bought my first luxury watch in 2008 I considered both, the SMP and the Sub, ending up buying the SMP which I own to this day. Even back then the Omega was technically superior to the Rolex while costing half of it. It was the first SMP with the co-axial escapement and therefore had the more advanced movement, it had a more refined dial, bracelet, caseback and last but not least a much better clasp. As a mechanical engineer I like it when things are solid and well-made, so I really like Omegas clasp while the flimsy Rolex clasp was a huge disappointment and turn off. Such a clasp is acceptable on a budget friendly Seiko but definitely not on a luxury item. Since then I never considered Rolex again, even if they didn't do this nonsense with their "waiting list".
I have that Seamaster, on Bracelet, always wanted a n Omega and recently bought this and very happy with it.
My first Luxury watch was an omega seamaster blue sphere, the second one was my grandfather's Rolex, both were stolen, my third is a GMT master II, eventually replaced the Omega, my fourth is an Omega seamaster GMT big white, My fifth is a Yacht Master Everose Rolesor Rolex, my gift for my 40's, the sixth is an IWC in fine steel, Portofino, 8 day reserve, the seventh is a ROLEX GMT master II steel and yellow gold, with the ceramic bezel and black sphere, the eight luxury watch I bought lately is a Rolex datejust steel and yellow gold, with green sphere and diamonds in the VI and IX.
All bought new, worn box and papers.
And yes, I love to wear the omegas, great watches. It's an addiction. No, I'm no millionaire. Yet. And this Sunday my collection grew with an Explorer II white and orange.

Outstanding Video watchfinder, & I couldn’t agree with you more!
Great video - I wouldn’t be using the term ‘better’ when it comes to comparing brands however - but rather ‘different’. As the way they’ve chosen to position the brand, customer journey, products, and experience can’t be defined as ‘better or worse’. They’re just playing to different target markets. And the term ‘better’ is heavily reliant on an individuals interpretation regardless.

Bought a new Submariner in 1978 for $660.00 . At the time, I was as interested in sailing and liked the Rolex Americas Cup ads in Sail magazine. Back then, other than sailors & divers, very few knew what it was. I send it back every 8 years or so for a tune up. Other than the time away being serviced, I've worn it every day since. No regrets.
The omega is lovely. Really like this latest seamaster version.
Beautiful video, thanks.
As a machinist it is all about quality, design, durability, flawless operation, and availability of parts. I'm not concerned at all with what someone else might think of me because of the watch that's on my wrist so any idea of "status" means nothing at all to me. For these reasons I've been an Omega fan and collector for many years.
I’m about to get my first luxury watch, and after months of research, I ended up settling for the 300SMP. Technically, it’s just a better watch, and there’s something about that name that Rolex will never match in my opinion. I could be biased, I am in the aerospace business, and was a competitive swimmer for years and years, and Omega was just omnipresent.
Wow, they put ads on their ads
Thought of getting a DJ as the SM is ugly for my birthday. Bought a two tone rose SMP instead. Very happy.
Amazing Review! I really enjoyed the video.
I love Rolex. The submariner is a perfect watch. The Omega Seamaster is ALSO a perfect watch. My gripe with Rolex is with this pseudo shortage and faux allure they have created. Exquisite company and quality products- but you’re not allowing us to interact and engage in the beauty. Omega is Swiss and fantastic but they, in my humble opinion, are unfortunately a victim of being TOO accessible and that’s a damn shame. My only grip with Omega is that they produce TOO many variants. Shrink the product line down and focus on the best of the best. Then......when you finally DO produce a new variant - people will marvel. But then again- how can I fault a great Swiss brand that WANTS accessibility and the ability to provide variety to its customers. Remember- if there were no Rolex - Omega would be the king.......
Well said
Exclusivity sells. Especially for a brand that's based around impressing 'other' people like Rolex.

I got struck by a lightning six times and hasnt received a call from my AD that my 116610LV is ready for pick up.

You should stay inside if its looks like there's a storm coming......
Watching this while wearing my 2005 blue auto seamaster almost mint condition 🤙
I have a GMT Mater II and Seamaster Pro. I love being able to wear the tar out of my Seamaster as an adventure piece, I certainly don't do the same to the GMT master. The and bracelet finish is certainly superior on the Rolex.
God I love my Seamaster. I've got an older one though, the 1993 model with the arguably better wave dial.
Beautiful piece! Treasure it!
Omega for me because it has more history more style and it means eternal.
Team Watchfinder : I have one word for you guys (esp. the narrator) - Sublime! 👍🏻 What a Fantastic discourse on Omega vs Rolex!!! Just excellent! 👏🏻👏🏻
I'll take substance over style each and every time. Excellent review, thanks!
I have an Omega Planet Ocean and I love it. I did owned a sub previously and kinda love it, what I hated the most was that people asked me more than one time if is "real". I liked Rolex because of the name and nothing more, I like Omega because I like their watches.
This was a long long time ago when my cousin went here in Manila and found fake Rolex and Omegas. He bought the Omega because he said nobody will believe that he got a genuine Rolex watch. To think they’re a family who can afford and he still thought people will think the Rolex is fake.
Nobody was asking you was it real. You must have been shoving it in their faces.
@@bighands69 clearly you never owned a Rolex.
watching this while enjoying wearing my Seiko 5 snkl41 j.
I almost started a collection of Seiko 5s, but, I already have too many retro dive watches. It would have been fun, though.
currently wearing my SKX033 :)
I'm with my Seiko padi 😂
I have the yellow Seiko BFK on my wrist now.
SBDX001 on mine right now :)
Nice video....straight to the point 👍😁
I’d like to say thanks for the help picking this watch. I spent a year trying to figure out which brand to buy. Well 2 days ago I pulled the trigger on the Omega and can’t stop looking at it.
Now go get the Rolex.
"Doesn't that dull the alure?"
No. I don't want things I can't have.
Then you are not human
I cant even afford a new iphone, why im i wantching this ? :(
Dream!
Mate 90% of the people watching can't afford a watch like this they just watch for fun I'll bet
It's almost the price of this watch to be honest 😂
New iPhones these days are overpriced like hell.. so it's not that strange I guess..
Keep dreaming. Some day u might buy one. All the best
The best video I've seen on rolex vs omega. Makes it easy to narrow down the decision.
I think this Seamaster, the Ploprof and the 1930s Omega Marine are all unique designs. The Submariner has become iconic, but it was originally an imitation of the Blancpain 50 Fathoms, which was released earlier.
I bought a Omega Seamaster in 2002 for $1200. It's one of the "James Bond" editions. It's the best $1200 I've ever spent. I wear that watch every damn day. I swim with it, ski with it, and wear it to the office. And at last once a month, some stranger stops me to tell me they love it. I've had it serviced twice (by Omega at about $500 a pop), and it keeps pretty good time. But a $20 digital watch will keep better time, and that's not why I love it. It just makes me feel good whenever I put it on. Rolex watches are beautiful. But I also feel that folks look at Rolex wearers as pretentious jerks. If I wanted to buy another watch, I'd go with another Seamaster. Timeless beauty!
Hi I thinking of getting one. Do you think it will last 100 years?
@@bobbyc3147 If you take good care of it.
That compelling "and yet..." Always grabs me
But is the continuity really good? What's the fun in a few same models year to year and on?
Good (and true) story(telling), I really enjoyed it!
Love this!!
I just bought the black version, and absolutely love it. I have spent my career in Advertising and Digital Advertising Sales, and agree that Rolex is the better brand, but I prefer the look of the Seamaster, and intend to keep my watch.
@P North why not black?
@P North said no one ever
@P North That was nasty
@P North ...oh that's tacky!!!! thanks for the laugh!!!
Explained it all, normally a watch collector knows this after several years into the game... excellent video
I used to be a Rolex fiend, but the new omegas are just too beautiful. I couldn’t get away from the Rolex and still can’t but the Seamaster and new moon phase moon watches are so well made, I couldn’t resist.
