I purchased my Speedmaster because I believe it to be one of the best looking watches available. Aesthetically far easier on the eye than a Daytona, and I say that as a Rolex owner and an admirer of other watches in their catalogue. I love that my Speedie is a manual wind. For some unexplainable reason I have always enjoyed winding clocks and watches, maybe it's to do with the sound the ratchet makes. As I regularly rotate the watches in my collection I'm not to fussed about seventy hour power reserves either. I rarely wear the same watch for more than two days. Returning to aesthetics, I know they are there for a reason, but what spoils the Daytona for me personally, are those screw down pushers. They look so clunky.

Agree with you completely. Apart from the moon and space thing, I bought the watch because I love it (even before they told me it was the moon watch). Winding it is very satisfying and power reserve is kinda pointless when you have a collection of 3-4 watches or more. By the time you get back to the first it probably stopped even with the 72 hour power reserve.

When we buy these things we are honouring and preserving skills that went out of fashion 3 generations ago we are getting a piece of someone who was skilled beyond imaging and there efforts are on my wrist right now and it will go on for perhaps a hundred years

How I feel about Rolex Vs everybody is this.
I went to a high end open market/ restaurant in a very affluent area of cheshire in the UK last weekend. My first weekend with my sapphire sandwich.
Being a watch guy my eyes are constantly on wrists. Many guys wearing Rolex. But the vast majority of the guys wearing other watches, IWC, VC, Omega etc etc all acknowledged each other and I got in to a couple of conversations, even guys with VC overseas where complementing the Sapphire sandwich.
None of the Rolex guys seemed like watch enthusiasts, just guys who were wearing a Rolex.
The Speedy is a watch fans watch.

I'll always be a Speedmaster kinda guy. I don't like the whole Rolex faux-shortage situation, and the speedy just appeals to me more visually. I know that if I wanted one today, I could just go to an AD and buy one straight off the shelf, or even some of the special editions (I've tried a few on the wrist in stores). That ain't happening at a Rolex store.
Sadly I can't afford either of them anyway. I want the sapphire sandwich 3861 at one point in my life. Daytonas fetch silly prices on the gray market websites and facebook market groups still.

I totally agree. I don't know why but the Speedmaster looks really class and elegant. Something about the tiny details that elevates the watch. On top of looking great, the watch played a pivotal role in our human space flight conquest. The current Rolex Daytona looks like a bulkier and fatter version of the Speedmaster. I very much prefer the vintage Daytona with thinner tachymetre bezel. If the vintage proportions were still kept till today, then it would come down to the history between the two watches.

If I'm in the waiting room at the dentist or the doctor's surgery when everything that you read in the room is at least twenty years old and you can't remember what you've just read anyway, my Speedy can save the day. I just take it off and look at that movement and before you know it I'm the next person to be summoned to the dreaded treatment room to experience things that I'd rather not. My coworker chose a vintage Croton chronograph with a delicious white enamel dial; I got a Speedmaster Pro dating from the late 70s. Price? The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. A good deal as the table and aircon were given to me :-) Since then I love Omega. But there are so many versions of the Speedmaster. Why are the other models less popular and less expensive? They are more complicated I would say (automatic, day/date mechanism). One day I would like the original moonwatch version. It's the best. But first the MoonSwatch if available:-) Another marketing hype.

From a functionality standpoint, the Omega is better. The dial is bigger (so easier to read), and the pushers are much easier to operate, (just push). Rolex pusher screw locks make it more like an armchair chronograph - if owner wears the watch tight, would require removing the watch to unscrew the pusher locks.

It keeps time perfectly, absolute zero, after two weeks. Not a second gained or lost.

While I can't afford either, given the choice I'd take the Omega. Rolex has made itself rather pedestrian with all its hype and marketing. It's special, but not that special. Omega is special without the hype.
It's somehow understated, thus more appealing to me.
Since "everybody" wants a Rolex I can't be bothered.
When I win the lottery I'll pick up a(n) A. Lange & Sohne for a couple hundred grand...and add a couple Omegas and maybe a Patek Philippe to round out my collection...

I love my speedy. But I like the retro look of the hesalite better than the sapphire crystal featured here. The hesalite is rounded at the edges, sort of a bubble look to it, whereas the sapphire has an angular edge. The hesalite bracelet has brushing on all the links rather than polished tiny center links on the sapphire model - tiny detail but I like it fully brushed. For a watch with historical provenance like this I think the hesalite model, which was closer to the original, is the one to go for. You give up not being able to see the movement, but there’s cool engraving on the case-back and I think looks better from the the front. Either way though I agree that speedy crushes Daytona, and I’d choose Omega over Rolex even if Daytona were available at retail, and even if the retail price were the same.
Slightly off topic, but if we’re talking chronos, the new Carrerra 39 with the black face and silver subdials on the retro leather strap is gorgeous.

It's because aesthetically it is the same speedy pro that I bought in 2014 for $1500, now being sold and repackaged for $8000+... with the differentiating factors as:
      1.) Fancier box set
      2.) METAS
3.) Coaxial movement vs the 1861
      4.) Fancier throwback bracelet
      5.) Better clasp.
When I bought the 1861 based speedy, I go to an independent watchmaker for any work needed, purchase parts from Ofrei if needed and saved a ton in costs and maintenance... with the new movement, everything has to go back to Omega for a huge cost... Basically just templating the Rolex Service Center model right now.

It was often used for shorter-term events or tasks when the crew needed to measure a specific duration rather than the total elapsed mission time.) had malfunctioned.
