Omega has much more history, like 60 years more. It was already a very well established brand with high reputation for innovation, quality and robustness when Rolex was beginning. 2. Omega has in-house movements since the XIXth century and has only used in-family movements for two decades, part of the 1980s and the 1990s, but never stopped producing some in-house movements. Rolex never made a single movement until very few years ago, already in the XXIst century. All of them were off the shelf Aegler's, just as others used ETA, like Breitling did for so many decades until recently. Rolex in some decades used also other brands too, like Valjoux’s and Zenith’s. So, Rolex movements made by Aegler were not even “in-family”… And that is true for all the famous movements inside Rolexes from the 1960s and 1970s, not Rolex, Aegler’s. 3. Omega has produced high horology, some of the principal high complications in horology, since the XIXth century, minute repeaters and perpetual calendars, and since 1947 Omega produces one of the most complicated challenges in horology, Tourbillons. And not just a Tourbillon, but a central Tourbillon, of which, by the way, Omega produces now not one but two different calibers, and has produced, several more along its history. Very few brands can make, know how to produce and want to produce Tourbillons. Omega is one of those. Rolex has never produced high horology. Not only that, Omega produces a solid gold Tourbillon movement. Gold movements are produced by only a few, like VC, FP Journe and Omega. 4. Omega made a Group Company, SSIH, with Lemania. Two brands of the same company and together designed and produced some of the most refined chronograph movements of horological history, like the 321, again produced by Omega today, a caliber used by Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and Roger Dubuis, among others. In fact, caliber 321 is in great part responsible for the continuation and resurgence of mechanical horology since the quartz crisis. Other Omega chronograph caliber (nothing less), like the 1861 has also been used by Vacheron Constantin, and also by Franck Muller... Also, Audemars Piguet has used at least one Omega in-house caliber, time only. So, Omega calibers have been used by Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Roger Dubuis, Breguet, Audemars Piguet, Chopard, Zenith, Cartier, Franck Muller and are the base for the amazing and artisanal hand made Atelier de Chronometrie watches. The reason for this is their extremely high quality and qualities. Aegler's and Rolex movements were never used by a single one of those brands, only by Gruen. And there are good reasons for that. Rolex couldn't made their own chronograph movement (neither a simple time movement) until the 2000s, so they used Valjoux, which are very good, and Zenith's, also very good. But it is clear that horologically they didn't have the capacity Omega had for decades and even more than 100 years before Rolex began producing their own movements. Omega had in-house movements, time only and chronographs, even in the pocket watch era, in the XIXth century and chronographs before their association with Lemania. In fact, caliber 321 is strongly based on an Omega caliber previous to the association with Lemania, and was produced mostly because of an Omega initiative. Very few brands were capable of producing their own calibers and more so their own chronograph movements. Longines and Angelus did it. Of course, Omega. Not even Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin or Audemars Piguet could, they began making their own movements just until the Swatch Group stop selling them the Omega-Lemania 321 (to PP and VC; AP used also a Lemania module). The new chronograph calibers by PP and VC are completely based on the Omega-Lemania movement. 5. Omega is a pioneer in technology, such as the Co-Axial but also of the finest quartz movements, and of materials. The first time a company used the stainless steel Rolex uses today was Omega in the early 1970s. The Megaquartz from the early 1970s were some 15 times more accurate than the Oysterquartz from 2001… 6. It is one of the very few brands to engage in a new escapement, and to this moment one of the most different and high performance escapement technologies in centuries. Breguet has also done marvels, but only in very few numbers. Omega has achieved this for large production, not easy. 7. Rolex made their first dive watch in 1953, the Submariner, 100mts water resistant, and strongly based on the Blancpain from months earlier (that’s another interesting story). Omega made 22 years earlier a divers watch for 135mts deep, the Marine. When Omega was producing Seamaster 300s good for 200mts deep, Rolex was making Submariners 100mts WR (it took Rolex several years more, already in the 1960s, to make them 200mts WR, something Omega achieved in 1957), and so on those differences are maintained with Omega always producing more performant technologies and watches. Simply put, better watches. The most extreme divers Rolex today is a Deep Sea, good for 11,000mts depth (until some months ago it was 3,900mts depth). The most extreme divers Omega since some years now is capable of 15,000mts depth. The Rolex Milgauss, is specifically made to be non affected by magnetism. Rolex doesn't publish the actual data (their webpage states a dubious 1000 Gauss, it should be more), but being a brand that publicizes so many doubtful data, like being the first to produce a divers watch (literally said in their webpage and completely false), being the first to produce a GMT (wrong again), etc, one would expect they would publish a better result than Omega if they had it. Any ladies mechanical dress Omega stands 15,000 Gauss. But Omega doesn't do the marketing Rolex does. 8. The finishing of the movements in Omegas has always been superior to the industrial finishing of Rolex (Aegler’s) movements. Just comparing, for example, calibers 5XX, 55X, 56X or 75X to their Rolex counterparts, calibers 1066 or 1575, will quickly evidence this. But the same today with 8500 vs 3231.
The reason against rolex: their marketing concept today is based on artificial shortage. Therefore rolex watches are to expansive and massively overpaid and even for to much money you have to wait long for even very normal and average rolex watches. These are things I and some other costumers hate but for many others this makes Rolex even more attractive.
Devil's advocate, but Wilsdorf was, first and foremost, a marketeer and knew that the value of a product was not what it cost to make, but what someone was prepared to pay. Personally, I think it's unfortunate that the world we live in today has embraced that idea to the extent that it has, but it is the world we live in.
@@johncarey9149 I don't think it was Wilsdorf that made Rolex that popular. When I heard that about 10 years ago you could practically buy every Rolex model you wanted! Therefore it is not so long ago that Rolex became that brand they are now! There was also a hype about Rolex as an "investment". I don't think luxury goods are any investment category because the hype could be over as fast as it came! For me watches are for watch lovers only! But maybe I'm an exot in this regard. Omega and Rolex in the luxury watch making are about average if you'd like high watch craftmanship. A. Lange & Söhne put all other brands to shame when it comes to this aspect of craftmanship. It's simply the highest level!
@@chrisjones6439 I am sure there are millions of Omega fan boiiis who would jump on to the video. And, separately, owning both Rolex and Omega, I genuinely find Omega more innovate whereas Rolex is more evolving conservative. I would definitely watch the Omega video over and over.

Rolex is at the pinnacle of high horology. Only people of distinction and accomplishment are fortunate enough to own a Rolex. Wearing a Rolex on your wrist tells everyone that you are a winner in life and someone to be admired and respected. I feel lucky to be among those fortunate few people of distinction who can look at their wrist and see the word “Rolex”…
Props to both you (excellent research and clever fact selections and presentations) as well as to Rolex. While I remain an "Omega guy," I am impressed by Rolex's design and engineering chops.
@AndrewMorganWatches Agreed. I'll continue searching your site for a "grail" watch I one day hope to own; a yellow gold Rolex, Sub, blue dial - on day.... You did sell me a beautiful Grand Seiko SBGA373 Champagne dial @ last Christmas. Great watch, good price. Thank you 😊.
I would be happy enough to own a Rolex if they were even reasonably affordable, like they were in my father's generation. Now they are rich boy's toys and status symbols. They are well build movement,s and my local watchmaker does prefer them to Omegas, for what it is worth.
Same here: bought my first submariner in 1993.not the baddest purchase. Omega is fine too, but forget the last 4 years with this weird rolex hype, omega will never have the same standard of hiytory quality and holding their values over decades. Buy a omega or a time if you like. I have 3 rolex es now and lookin forward for the next haunt. Greetings from Germany
I don't care about "losing money" when buying luxury items, if i do, that means i probably cannot afford that. When i buy a watch i consider 100% of its price a "loss", i don't buy to sell.
Watchfinder catches a lot of grief for being Rolex fan-boys. Anyone who watches this video and is not impressed by Rolex's accomplishments is just going out of his way to be a hater. I am an owner of three Rolexes: an Oyster Perpetual, an OP Date-Just, and a Submariner. I love them all, wear none of them to impress anyone, and will keep them until I die, leaving them as bequests to people I know and love who I am confident will love them, too.
You’re right. I have a Datejust, Sub, GMT and Milgauss… I’ve tried to not be a ‘fanboy’ and bought (and then sold) other brands, such as Omega, but nothing else will do. And whilst I appreciate other watches, and often want to add them to the collection, I always end up wearing a Rolex. I don’t care much if they get scratched up a little, they’re keepers for life and then onwards to the kids.
Rolex are well built, reliable, and decent enough.... NOT high horology, NOT the pinnacle of watchmaking, NOT what true enthusiasts should be aspiring to
@@chrisjones6439 why? You should "aspire" to what you want. To suggest that a "true enthusiast" should shun Rolex is absurd. One can love Rolex while understanding that A. Lange & Sohn is a superiorly built watch.

@@JCDofNYC I think you're missing my point mate....of course people should buy what puts a smile on their face... What I think is absurd is people thinking Rolex is the be all and end all of the horological spectrum when there are far, far better watches out there.
You mentioned 101 facts about Rolex in this video. But you did not answer the question Why Rolex is better than Omega? Rolex has better marketing, which is how it should be because from its inception it is a marketing company, and not a watchmaking company. Omega is a watchmaking company that could use better marketer. Your title should have been: Here's Why Rolex Marketing is better than Omega Marketing.
Question..I have a vintage Omega Geneve from the 60s (formally my grandfathers) which i wear on weekdays. How often do you reckon such a watch should be serviced?...do you reckon wait until there is a timekeeping issue...or every x nr of years?..
Do you know when it was last serviced? If you are concerned about how it's running ask a local watch repair shop to have a look at it. Do some research first read reviews etc and always go to the shop and see the people in person if you can.
@@gmp7458 yes I had it serviced about 2.5 years ago...there is no problem with trust on the watch maker...he done a good job and is respected locally....but, not cheap to service....I jist want to know how often it should be serviced....I wouldnt ask the watch maker...it would be a bit like asking a barber if I need a hair cut
By waiting until there is a timekeeping issue this could cause more wear to the watch. Think of it like the engine of your car, if you only service it when it breaks down the engine will wear out far more quickly as the lubricants break down and no longer do what they should do. The same applies to your watch as the lubrication drys out it will accelerate wear on the parts.
Not even close to the holy trinity 🤷🏻♂️ mass production with really good quality and an even better marketing, resulting in overprized watches that sell well 🤷🏻♂️
Great story, great company, great watches. The only problem is ADs, I will not beg for a trinket. If they have one, I will definitely buy one, otherwise, sorry, there is always good old Omega and many other watch companies who value their customer.
Sooooo…..marketing? Omega doesn’t even to seem to have a marketing department except maybe Colin from accounts, and Rolex seems to have an army of marketing folks. I’ll take quality over quantity any day.
The reason the video doesn’t mention why rolex is better than omega, is because it isn’t made about that subject. The title has been changed shortly after uploading the video from 101 facts about rolex, to, here’s to why rolex is better than omega.
Here's some things I know about Rolex. The term "president" was introduced after LBJ was gifted a gold day/date. It was that act that also started the replica craze. If you put "Rolex" in the vid title, people will watch it ;)
It's great that Rolex lives rent free in your head. How else could they make you take time out of your incredibly valuable day to spout RUclips watch cliches? Just saying.
Respectfully always interested why people say that. What is your definition of high horology?? My Rolex keeps time within 1s per day and has wearing it daily for over 2 years so far doing everything in it. I play golf weekly, workout 5 days a week, swim in the pool and ocean, surf, fish, boat on and on. Bottom line the watch looks phenomenal and keeps great time and will fetch more than I paid for it today. I can continue doing this for the next 50 years and it will be ticking just the same and worth 3x-5x more than I paid for it then. What other high horology watch can you do that? Patek, AP, VC? Who wears these higher horology watches daily doing all the things people do in their Rolexes for decades and they keep better time and look better? Just asking since that comment comes up everywhere. One more thing to bring up. It is estimated that Rolex makes one million of these watches at this standard annually. Probably more than Patek, AP, and VC have made in their existence.
High horology refers to the precision of the finishing, the usually hand made elements, the decoration of the movement, the chamfering of the surfaces, things like that. Rolex are great watches and are nice, but there is a reason you cannot see the movements, they are nothing special. Ultimately, Rolex make tool watches.@@rooterman2619
Yes, but one can go into an Omega store and actually buy one of their watches right then and there...I have even heard about Omega now offering discounts on some of their watches. Take that Rolex.
As an owner of both, including a GMT II and a Seamaster, Omega has it on almost every parameter with the possible exception of the one that matters most, brand desirability and value. The Rolexes sit in their boxes, year after year, bar the odd very rare outing (usually when I am 100% happy that I am unlikely to be coshed from behind), whereas the Omegas come out to play because they look and feel great.
Oh, I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!! But you Forgot to mention several other facts about Rolex in relation to other companies: 1- Rolex Detuned the El Primero Caliber from 36000 VPH to 28800 VPH coz it was unable to lubricate the movement at such high rate. 2- Rolex have never produced a perpetual calendar, or a Tourbillion, or an Automata watch/clock until the mid 2020s 3- Rolex have never been used in Olympic Games where you have to time many different events, not just one. 4- Rolex had only sent one single sample to the deepest parts of the ocean, while other competitor sent a set of three or more to be tested simultaneously. 5- Rolex Ref 6238 had a Valjoux 72 caliber that was the one used during the NASA qualifications and failed, unable to start after failing the first test out of ten. 6- Rolex never sent any more Chronos to be tested by NASA, while Casio and others have done so. 6- No Rolex have ever been qualified by NASA for Extra-Vehicular Activities (EVAs), ONLY OMEGA. 6- Rolex two Anti-magnetic Time-only/no date watches are resistant to 1000 Gauss, while almost all Omegas with METAS certification are resistant to 15000 Gauss and can have date. 7- No Rolex have ever used a 24Hr indicator dial while Omega had done that with the 125 Model of 1973. 8- Rolex was not the first having a COSC Certified Chrono, it was Omega 125th Anniversary model of 1973. 9- Rolex doesn't have the record of Consecutive Chronometer passed movements, that record goes to Omega Cal 1010 with 100.000 consecutive samples passing with no failure in the late 60s. 10- Rolex has the Best Marketing machinery in the whole world. 11- Rolex have never made a Tourbillion movement, even less a Central Tourbillion, ONLY OMEGA 12- Rolex is extremely conservative company in technological terms having ONLY Evolutionary improvements, while other brands have made Revolutionary changes like Grand Seiko, Omega, Ulysse Nardin, etc. 13- Rolex Chronographs made before 2001 used external suppliers like Valjoux and Zenith for its movements, while other makers have been making their own In-House movements eg Grand Seiko, Zenith, Buren. 14- Rolex did not pioneered the unidirectional rotating diver bezel, it was Blancpain so that was why Blancpain got the Navy Contract while Rolex didn't. 15- Rolex invented the GMT Master together with PanAm Pilots for use as a Pilot's watch. 16- Rolex only have two three three types of in-house calibers- manual, automatic, and automatic chronos, while others have also Tourbillions, Fussee, and Automata. 17- Rolex have barely few Technological First Achievements and most of them are evolutionary improvements on their movements. 18- Rolex copied the Basic Design of the 1957 Speedmaster, producing the Cosmograph/Daytona in 1963. There are many more but the list is to long. I hope you incorporate these other facts, and I love your video, just that nowhere you said why those other facts you mentioned proved Rolex is Superior. Where is Grand Seiko? And PP? and Zenith? And Obviously, Omega.......
The king of marketing for sure! It even managed to turn a failure into a huge success: the cosmograph was clearly marketed to go to the moon. The fact that it wasn't good enough for that is irrelevant to the consumer nowadays.
Amazing video. However, the title of the video is wrong. It should be....This is why Rolex is by far the most influential watch brand in the world. Omega is not a competitor for Rolex anymore. Just look at the market share. Cartier is the real competition of Omega 😄. I love and own Omega watches btw.
It’s a shame you can’t walk around London with your watches on. I walk around Miami with my APs or RM all the time. (But I also always have a HUGE gun on me lol)

Rolex fact. Rolex isn't actually a non profit. Rolex SA is actually a limited company that's owned by the Hans Wilsdorf foundation. Which is a non profit. Rolex offsets profits by improving the company and buying property (which is worth big bucks).

The Megaquartz from the early 1970s were some 15 times more accurate than the Oysterquartz from 2001…
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
Great video Andrew. Thank you. Can you please do an equivalent for Omega ?
Packed with knowledge, love it!

Re. #10: "Vade mecum" literary means "go with me" rather than "handy guide". The latter is the modern meaning.
Andrew, we need a video for the Omega fan boiiis now! Caption: "Here's Why Omega Is Better Than Rolex"
Will never happen, not click baity enough
@@chrisjones6439 I am sure there are millions of Omega fan boiiis who would jump on to the video. And, separately, owning both Rolex and Omega, I genuinely find Omega more innovate whereas Rolex is more evolving conservative. I would definitely watch the Omega video over and over.
@@InteliDey I agree mate. Unfortunately Rolex clickbait titles get more views...these RUclipsrs aren't interested in quality content for the watch enthusiast, all about views and money.
@@chrisjones6439 That's true.
But this video was awesome.
NASA couldn't get their hands on new Rolex model, because even then it was a Rolex.
Props to both you (excellent research and clever fact selections and presentations) as well as to Rolex. While I remain an "Omega guy," I am impressed by Rolex's design and engineering chops.
Thank you! Yeah, the more I researched, the more I discovered how much of the status quo was enforced by Rolex
Andrew Morgan, the freaking legend
Rolex is the only brand ive never lost money on, and no, im not a rolex fan boy, they are just a great all-rounder
I guess you didn't consider inflation and opportunity costs.. Hahaha
When i buy a watch i consider 100% of its price a "loss", i don't buy to sell.
that's not the case anymore
@@chrisjones6439 I also like cars. My friend has an Aston Martin, it’s devine. I could afford one too, but somehow I don’t want one. I drive a Lexus… and my old 2007 Ford Mondeo 😆.
@@JCDofNYC I think you're missing my point mate....of course people should buy what puts a smile on their face...
What I think is absurd is people thinking Rolex is the be all and end all of the horological spectrum when there are far, far better watches out there.

You are the master of horological oration! Well done, well done.
Love all this Rolex history in one video. Nice job. 👍🏼

Omega is doing it better. Rolex is the narcissistic neighbor. while omega is the gentleman neighbor, whom will happily feed the homeless.

@@gmp7458 I had it serviced 2.5 years ago when I found it in the back of a drawer....prior to that...I inagine decades ago

It’s the implication

Timex is also a simple, clear and easy to pronounce name.
Here's some things I know about Rolex. The term "president" was introduced after LBJ was gifted a gold day/date. It was that act that also started the replica craze. If you put "Rolex" in the vid title, people will watch it ;)
Great history lesson, very much enjoyed it!

Number 1 fact about Rolex - they are not high horology and there are better made, better finished watches. Just saying.
It's great that Rolex lives rent free in your head. How else could they make you take time out of your incredibly valuable day to spout RUclips watch cliches? Just saying.
Dick@@davidr2802

Great overview.
Another fascinating fact about Rolex is that I can't afford one.
I hear that in the 70s In Germany if you bought a gold Rolex they would give you Cosmograph as apparently they were not selling well…!!!

The king of marketing for sure! It even managed to turn a failure into a huge success: the cosmograph was clearly marketed to go to the moon. The fact that it wasn't good enough for that is irrelevant to the consumer nowadays.
