What to do when your Freesat Recordable 4k TV box has a hard disk drive error?
How to fix hard drive failure on a Freesat Recordable 4k TV box?
How to fix failed recording on a Freesat Recordable 4k TV box?
The Recordable Freesat 4K set top box uses an internal hard drive to enable to you record, pause and playback live TV.
Like all hard drives, they can fail.
If your Recordable Freesat 4K set top box starts to miss recordings, then this may be the first indication that the hard drive is failing.
The Freesat Recordable 4K UHD Set Top Box may also display a "something is wrong" warning screen when powering up.
You are given the options to reboot, delete recordings, or ignore.
But if the hard drive has failed, then you will continue to see the "something is wrong" warning screen when powering up.
So the only option is to replace the failed hard drive with a new working hard drive.
Hard Drive : amzn.to/3NWzhm6
You will also need a TORX T10 Driver.

We can install new digital satellite systems, conduct fault-finding, carry out satellite dish re-alignments, removal of old satellite dishes, and upgrade your current system, or provide additions viewing locations.
With Freesat TV you have the best free UK TV service there is - with 150 subscription free UK TV channels, including BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, Dave and many more. And over 20 channels available in crystal clear HD.

Watch free and legal UK TV with Freesat
Record UK TV for free with Freesat
With a VPN access the UK TV Catch UP services like iPlayer and ITVX on Freesat
We use only the best high performance 125 x 135 cm satellite dish - probably the best satellite dish for UK TV reception in Spain
We use only the best high performance LNBs - easily outperforms other LNBs we have seen being used by other “installers”
We use only Official Freesat or Freesat HDR recording receivers - including the Freesat 4K Set top box
When we install a Freesat satellite system, we use official Freesat Set Top Boxes. Some UK satellite TV installation companies offer you an Iberosat, Ferguson Ariva or GI Galaxy Innovations satellite receiver, claiming it is a Freesat Set Top Box. These satellite receivers are NOT Freesat Set Top Boxes, but basic “free to air” satellite receivers. These types of receivers will NOT have the Freesat logo, the Freesat Guide, Automatic Channel updates, a full 7 day programme guide, or access to online “on demand” content such as BBC iPlayer.
Satellite TV is still the most popular and reliable way to watch UK TV in Spain.
Satellite TV is live and direct from the broadcasters, in full 1080 HD, Dolby Digital Audio channels.
Satellite TV will not be closed down by the authorities for being illegal.

Legend. It worked a treat. Ordered hard drive, it got here the next day, fitted in 1 minute, good as new.
Well done.
Glad it helped
Thank you SO much for this. No TV for a month as couldn't afford replacement box (£200+). Followed these simple instructions and we're up and running again! Honestly, thank you.
Glad it helped
As everyone else has said... THANK YOU! This has saved me so much money.
Glad it helped
Concise and simple explanation. Thankyou
Glad you liked it
Thanks for that, saved me £200, I would not have attempted a repair without your video. The Amazon link was spot on, and so easy to install when you know how.
Glad it helped
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Thank you so much for this! I never leave feedback on these kind of videos but this is just fantastic. Box went down with the hard drive issue a few days ago. I was absolutely gutted as only had the box 18 months or so. I was looking at a replacement box for around £250 and this video has not only saved me over £200 but also let me continue to watch tv once i had removed my old hard drive until the following day when the hard drive got delivered from amazon! 100/10 for this one. Thank you very much sir
Glad it helped
Thank you very much!
Hard drive gave up on Sunday, stuck in reboot mode!
New hard drive ordered (£18) and fitted in 5 mins!
Saved me £220!
Glad I could help
Thanks for this video - much cheaper than buying a whole new box.
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for this video, the hard disc failed after two years and I was looking to have to spend £230.00 for a new one. I am not very good at diy tasks but after watching your video decided to order a new hard drive and security bits to remove the screws. Everything was so easy, the job was done in five minutes and all seems to be working fine. Spent about £18.00 on the disc and screw removal bits. You saved me £212.00. Once again, thank you!
Glad i could help
How much of a tb could you insert like 4tb seagate yes ?
Hi
Thank you!! Great vid such an easy repair following your instructions saved me buying a new box
Glad it helped
Thanks very much for the advice here. I followed it carefully and was able to see clearly which wires went where. The link to Amazon also worked . My box is restored and I have saved over £200 on having to replace it. Excellent.
Glad it helped
thank you for putting up this post I thought that I would end up chucking my freesat box I followed your link and have orders a new Hard drive for just £11 looks to be a simple job to fit thanks again.
Glad I could help!
Thanks. Repaired for £14, rather than buying a new box for £200 👍👍👍
Glad I could help
Great simple step by step instructions, thanks a bundle - is it possible to fit a solid state drive instead of a standard hard disk? - as there are no moving parts in solid state drives, I'm thinking they will last for years and years - anyone done this I wonder?

But some people reported their SSD are overheating...i have not seen this on mine yet. But have a few more SSDs to test out
That was helpful, thanks. £230 for a new box, or £13 for a replacement hard drive? It's a no-brainer.
Glad it helped
Do the hard drives not need software for the box to work? Hope not; the old Humax boxes couldn’t be swapped out unless you had the software to flash the drive with. Great video 👍
When the new hard drive is inserted, the box recognized it as new, and performs a format of the drive. But then I check all new hard drives on a PC before installing them into the unit, so the PC formats it.
@@SatTVGuy brilliant, that’s what I was hoping you would say 😃have a great new year!
you too
Brilliant video, do i need to format the hard drive or anything in advance
No need, the box should format it for use when it first sees it
Anyone any idea what size the hex bit is? I assume it's the same as a Torx bit? I've tried T5 to T20...
The amazon link shows the hard drive available in 9.5mm and 7mm options, which do I need to purchase to carry out the hard drive replacement please?
To be honest, never saw that as an option...
But looking at my past purchase, 9mm is what i have bought and used....
Not sure if 2.5mm really makes a difference?
Hi whats the name of the new hard drive you installed thanks very much?

Hello. Thanks for this. I have a question. If I take out my failed hard drive, will the box still work for just viewing? I don't need to record anything. I only watch live or use on-demand. Thanks
I disconnected the HDD in one of my units, and it works fine. The various HDD options in the menu system are removed to reflect there is no drive attached.
I have cancelled skyq and have a wideband lnb and need a freesat box that can be used with lmb. i see options online but can i buy a basic model and fit a 2tb ssd ?
If by "basic model" you mean the "blue boxed" non recording 4k Freesat box, then dont think so as it doe snot like the drives being connected to the USB port (i tried both an SSD and HDD and it did not recognize either!). Freesat offer a 4k recording box with 2tb drive, which may be more stable than a SSD as some people report their box shows "over heating" message with SSDs (although I have yet to see this message myself on my SSD Freesat 4k boxes).
Done all this but get same problema day later the replacement drive was identical part number and new any body got any ideas please the drve does not appear to be getting hot nor does the IC controller I have added extra heat pads
Hi, going to buy a new hard drive after watching but is 500gb enough, not sure if I should go to 1TB. Thanks
1 hour recording on BBC One HD is approx 1% of HDD space. 1 hour of recording on C4HD is approx 2% of HHD space.
Thank you it worked, and such simple instructions.
The hdd model number in my box is MQ01ABD050V - the V meaning that it is for video streaming. The Amazon link for the hdd is for a MQ01ABD050 (no V). Does this matter?
Not had any issues so far
What size hexsecurity bit
No idea. It was the first one i tried in the 10 that were in the pack from the local "discount" store
Changed hard drive worked for 4 days then back the same any ideas?
Is it possible to recover the original HD? That would be great to know thanks.
Depends how bad the drive is damaged.
@@SatTVGuy how would I know?
and how could I attempt recovery?
Pop the drive into a USB caddy, connect to a laptop, and scan the drive for errors?
Can you change the hard drive with a seagate 4tb ? Thanks very much.
I know they work with 2tb drives, but not seen them with anything higher
@@SatTVGuy if the size fits it should work? Could I use and external hard drive with this aswell?
@@SatTVGuy I want to keep videos for years if you get me sports like snooker 8ball pool soccer etc.
Not necessarily. Sometime, firmware in the devices can limit the drives size that can be used. It did not like the three drives I tried to connect to it via USB
@@SatTVGuy can you extract the video files to another hardrive to play back on the pc or format to a mp4 let me know thanks.
Very tech minded person here who's worked in the IT industry for decades.
Had a HDD failure, replaced a 500GB HDD with a 1TB SSD, box still showing hard drive failure, but does show the new drive with larger capacity and a temp of 31ºC
I reset the box to factory, and it still won;t accept the drive hasn't failed.
Any idea on next steps?
Thanks
Seems that they dont like all SSDs. They seem to incorrectly report heat issue. Go back to a mechanical SSD and it should work fine. Only advantage of SSD over conventional HDD is less noise.
@@SatTVGuy It's OK, realised my error... basically I'm an idiot ... 😂 Rather than buy a new SSD, I used a 1TB I replaced with a 4TB recently in my PC.
I reformatted the drive, but forgot to delete the 'volume' from it.
Definitely a D'OH moment.
Hi Jon. Thanks for sharing all this helpful information. I sent you a message on Facebook and Instagram looking for more information 👍😀
