I replaced the hard drive in my box with a SSD after watching your video. After a few hours the drive overheated and shut down. I have now replaced it with a new HDD. No problems since.
I found one further step necessary (as error still appeared after installing the new drive). Go to settings and delete all recordings (even though there are none). This formats the drive ready for recordings.
Hi Adrian. I’ve had a few hard drive problems with my 500gb box so I replaced with exact same SSD as you and now appears to be working perfectly, perhaps with improved performance. Thanks for the simple guide, my box is almost 3 years old and was one of the first. Freesat now just need to get their iOS app sorted which is a disgrace, they seem uninterested in addressing the abysmal Apple App Store reviews especially re setting recordings remotely.
Installing an SSD in any form of PVR is not a good idea an SSD only has a limited number of times it can be written to in its lifetime and as a PVR is constantly writing to its storage for a buffer to be able to pause and rewind live TV as well for recordings, a typical SSD will not last as long as typical HDD would. Personally, i wish it waa a perfect world where an SSD could be used for storage on a PVR and have as a long lifespan as a HDD as they do make the performance of an older PC or even a PS3 or a PS4 a lot better.
When I took my hd out is was Ext3 format. Tried an SSD but kept get an over heat warming. I was told don't use a Toshiba HD, they're naff. Use WD. I did a lot of research at the time.
Yes, I’d guess that is the case, as when you boot the machine and log in to RUclips with a Gmail account, Gmail sends you a warning telling you a Linux Device has tried to log in/ access the account. Still can’t get HDD access though.. but it is an old 160gb drive, that did work when plugged in to Mac via USB adapter
I have tried 2 new hard drive, but i'm still getting error message "something's wrong, whilst the box was turning on, we've noticed an error with your hard drive, I have rebooted and done a full reset several times but to No avail. The drive does show in the information menu and shows the capacity and temperature
I just tried an ExFAT format HDD, and no go… but it was only 160gb Same HDD error as before. Not got remote for the box, so need to go back to customer tomorrow.

The crucial ssd’s can run hot I’ve found although top quality kit. The Samsung evo’s are frugal with power and tend to run cooler.
Same issue... did you find a solution?
@@liambreakspear1235 No. I’ve stayed with the HDD. It might have been ok with a different SSD but I didn’t pursue it.

Thanks Adrian, great video very helpful.👍

Happy to have helped someone my mission is accomplished. Thanks for your feedback

Hi after the screws are removed how do you open the box? Two screws removed but it's not obvious to me how to remove the cover. Thanks!
You just gently prize it apart the top should lift away from the bottom
@@AdrianLaRiviere thanks! Just waiting on the hardrive and hopefully back up and running. The box is great when it works :)
What format should the HDD be? Exfat? Dos?

Does the freesat box format the SSD drive for you.
I'm not an expert but mine just started working straight away. I used the crucial mx500 drive
Was the new HDD straight out the box or did you format on PC / Mac first ?
Have replaced the hard drive to a SSD but now it keeps saying the drive is overheating. Any ideas?

Did you find a solution as I have same issue after upgrading to ssd
When I look in system settings for hard drive info it says 0c temp ?!?!? Strange ?!?!?
Then says 128c
@@liambreakspear1235 I ended up buying a new box instead. As couldn't find a way to solve it. Good luck...hope you find a way.
