That's not the point. A referee or supervisor (head ref) can only overrule a decision on a question of law (the rules). The chair umpire is in charge of all questions of fact (ball in or out, player returning the ball). Coco was trying to get around that by bsing with the rules, which was clever but kind of silly. That chair umpire for Coco's match is actually braindead. How the hell can the call come at the same time as the return when you're making a correction? In order to make a correction you have to wait and see if the linesman is going to make the call first, and in that time the player has already returned the ball. Absolutely ridiculous.
In Volynets's match the system call the wrong call & show the wrong ball. The Chair umpire says "For me, I thought it was out also. But I can't overrule the system." Then Why we need the umpire? He didn't do his job anymore.
Coco was right. Had the supervisor just been called, the argument would have been ended much earlier. I also admire her politeness and careful choice of words while clearly being in a very emotional state of mind. 99% of the players would have used derogative words in that situation.

@einarsd4 Watch the replay, it did not bounce twice. And yes, people's shoes squeak, but not INTENTIONALLY during their opponent's serve. Most shoes squeak because the player is changing position or moving around. Ostapenko stayed in the same place. She did that to throw off the serve.

@@juha1428 good point. But maybe it's just a mix of feeling helpless and not wanting to let the umpire get away with it. And I'm sure in the heat of the moment, you are mad at the umpire but can still talk a little more politely to an outsider who didn't wrong you (the supervisor). Plus: this way, the umpire has to explain his point to a third person and summarize the whole situation once more. Come to think of it, I would also call the supervisor if I were her 😅
Some of these umpires should be checked for Alzheimer's because their memories and recollection of the calls they make are extremely spotty to say the least.
Two perfect decisions against Ostapenko. And funny enough, even mentioning the overrule decision of the final in Linz. After reviewing it, she still does not accept that the overrule was correctly made after a late call from the line-umpire. The most hilarious remarks is her saying: „You will never work on any of my matches again!“ 😂😂😂 As if she would have a say into that and as if the umpire could not care less.
I mean to be fair. If he did just let her talk, and say her piece without chiming in, he probably would’ve understood what she wanted. Playing tennis, or any sport when someone saying their piece to a ref in a respectful manner initially, and they cut them off because they think they already know what’ll come out my their mouth would send someone over the edge
Can someone please explain to me what the rules say about when you are allowed to challenge? Melichar-Martinez seemed very confident, but I have heard umpires before say you can't wait to see if your shot goes out and then challenge. Does anyone know who is in the right here?
I don’t know the rule but I would say most umpires I’ve seen have acted like this umpire did. Right or wrong it’s consistent and not deserving of penalty. That said, had the player challenged when she saw the ball hit, like most others do, then she would have been correct as the ball was out.
It's pretty easy Umpire was in the right, because you can challenge shortly after the ball landed out, and if that was the end of a point, you have few seconds to call a challenge. But in that case that ball was not the end of play, so you have to challenge in an instant, meaning you interrupt the point and call challenge before your shot lands anywhere. In this situation she waited to see if her ball was going out, and when it did she called the challenge. That is not allowed, you cannot decide whether to challenge or not after seeing that you missed the ball, if the ball would be in she would gladly take the point and not challenge it. If you are certain oponent ball was out, you interrupt the point regardless of your shot, she simply didn't and wanted to abuse the system.
It’s literally a contradiction… if your ball doesn’t land it can’t be called out, and if it’s not called out there’s no need to challenge. The umpire was out of her mind trying to use that logic
The thing is the serve was out. Not the shot. If she challenged without following her own ball til it landed out and looked at the serve instead it would've been a challenge 100%. She was too late here
If a ball is out and you want to challenge it, you should raise your hand and stop everything and challenge. What you cannot do is wait for your shot to land to decide if you challenge or not. This was a perfect example: the player waited for her shot to land to challenge. And we all know that if the shot was in, she would not have challenged. So that's perfect logical umpiring.
Kjendlie never gives Ostapenko any reaction and is sometimes a little passive aggressive back. I absolutely LOVE it. I hope she umpires an Ostapenko match at every slam for the rest of her career 😭 even when Ostapenko is right she’s so awful that I want to disagree with her
It's about time a point system existed for umpires and line judges. Some of them need to be demoted to line judges and some line judges need to be released.
Regarding the Coco incident ... it would be so simple for the umpire to be able to review the video with audio and correct his mistake. He made the out call when Pliskova's return was at the net. Reviewing these things would make things go along far faster than having arguments about it.
That's what pisses me off umpires can make all the mistakes and not take responsibility that they are ruining a match. Gauff had the right to question and the umpire denied her which is bullshit. That umpire sits there no fault or mistakes is on his name and if Guaff does something wrong she gets fined. Shows how unfair sport is which explains why officials can get away with cheating.
In the last clip I wonder why they can't just replay a video to show if the umpire did call before or after the player hit the ball. The commentators are able to so it's crazy why the umpire can't.
I hope he did apologise after. It is of course nearly impossible to admit you were wrong live in the moment, so I guess having erred he could do nothing else but go with his inadequate feeling
I really need to ask this because I’ve seen different resolutions about this aspect. What is the reasonable time to ask for a challenge in a ball which not called out, after you hit the ball?
THANK YOU. I was waiting for this. She was correct in the argument, but the way she argued about it was wrong. Also, the constant interrupting of him and then yelling "can you not interrupt me for 2 seconds?" I know she's in the right for the call, but to act like that much of a brat over it is just a bad look.
@@jbond119 But this wasn't a rule she was asking, it was point of fact. "If he calls early, replay point, and if late, it's her point" is the rule, but she's mad because he didn't agree with her that he called late. The timing of a call is point of fact, not a rule.
@@TheLouzer_ no matter what the ump was wrong about the call. Coco wanted to "clarify" that with the supervisor so she can argue about what happened here. Ump just didn't care and stuck to his stupid "that's how I remember" argument. If it's supposed to be a fact you can't be saying that.
@GdNYa The question she wanted to ask because "she didn't know the rule" was not a rule question. It was an opinion-based question, and wouldn't have changed anything. She wanted to ask "can he call it before or after the play", which is an opinion, not a rule.
The umpire’s argument against Melichar-Martinez is just bizarre. It sounds like she’s saying you can’t wait for the ball to be called out before you challenge. But how on earth are you supposed to challenge before a call is made? I don’t really get the fuss over challenging too late at all. Who cares if the challenge comes 1 second after vs 5 seconds after
Melichar-Martinez was challenging the serve, not her shot. Waiting long enough for her next shot, the return, to land and be called out means she's waited too long to challenge the serve.
So if she’s challenging the serve, I can understand the judgement the chair umpire is having. She waited for to see if her return goes out and then made a challenge call. The umpire essentially is saying if your return goes in, you wouldn’t have challenged the serve. She’s thinking that the challenge is being used as a bailout to a poorly hit return
Coco was right and wrong. She was right about the call being made after Plishkova hit it but she was wrong about being able to call the Supervisor. The umpire made the ruling (which was wrong) but you can't ask for the supervisor during a point about a rule, you have to wait after the next change over or after the match.
I don't get how the umpire can say he wasn't making a late call... it was an overrule, overrule's by their very nature are late calls because the umpire needs to first recognise a call hasn't been made by the linesman before they make their own call
Kalinskaya could've been such a good example if she agreed to replay the point. She would've won the set anyway (4-1 up). Instead she took the point like a coward.
Tennis players should stop that “call the supervisor” crap. I’ve literally seen every video in this channel and never seen a supervisor overturn a call.

My boss asked me the last day why I hadn’t a piece of work done. I told her it was a “question of fact” and she went away. Works a dream everytime.
Regarding the Coco incident ... it would be so simple for the umpire to be able to review the video with audio and correct his mistake. He made the out call when Pliskova's return was at the net. Reviewing these things would make things go along far faster than having arguments about it.
@Tennis Advocate Thanks for the Video but where is Putintseva?
Haha
🙏💚
4:16 even a blind person can tell that's out. How the hell was that not called out?
I knew Ostapenko would be on the video. lol
Gauff doing a fair impression of Jeremy Paxman.
Umpire didn’t give a fuck about ostapenko cos she does it all the time 😜
The WTA tour gets the worst umpires. The one at 7:17 seems to believe that challenges must come before calls.
Human: "I can't overrule the system". This is the present, and our future.
i’m so glad that coco won that match at the end, what a horrible umpire he should lose his job
How are Bacchi and Wang still reffing? Terrible umpires.
In the last clip I wonder why they can't just replay a video to show if the umpire did call before or after the player hit the ball. The commentators are able to so it's crazy why the umpire can't.
Not a fan of Coco but geesus I was fully behind her against that arrogant of an idiot umpire
Yet that 1st one isnt hinderance 😂
But did the umpire apologize to gauff?
I hope he did apologise after. It is of course nearly impossible to admit you were wrong live in the moment, so I guess having erred he could do nothing else but go with his inadequate feeling
I really need to ask this because I’ve seen different resolutions about this aspect. What is the reasonable time to ask for a challenge in a ball which not called out, after you hit the ball?
PLOT SUMMARY: Gauff wants to ask her the rule.
I love how Kalinskaya said. Yes I am!
Not her problem. No need for storm to confront her. It was her own mistake and umpires decision.
I can‘t even be 100% sure in this slowmo that Azarenka‘s ball did not bounce twice, how the hell should the Ref!!!
I was sitting courtside on Azarenkas side, it was clear from my angle that Azarenka got there in time
@@goughmi5430 Well, i agree it looks like she got there in time, but i think there should be a challenge possible, or sth alike…
Gauff was right about his call, but wrong about calling the supervisor
THANK YOU. I was waiting for this. She was correct in the argument, but the way she argued about it was wrong.
Also, the constant interrupting of him and then yelling "can you not interrupt me for 2 seconds?" I know she's in the right for the call, but to act like that much of a brat over it is just a bad look.
no, they are allowed to ask for a clarification of a rule
How about serving when a return player is constantly delaying. The umpires never warns them. Force them to make a desicion.
Pyrion Flax brought me here. And he's right. Tennis players really are whiny children.
Ostapenko is always there for the drama.
Coco is always right. She knows the rules.
Ostapenko was wrong in Linz and in this situation as well 😂😂😂
soooooooooooooooooooooo many footages that should justify VAR in tennis.
do a vídeo of the supervisors actually doing something
Ostapenko is truly a horrible person
Lmao you’re judging her entire being on a short window of time during a high stakes moment. at least she isn’t leaving troll comments online.
@@Conradcoffee be serious. there are hours of footage of her acting like this
@@Conradcoffee and of course Elizabeth Holmes is your avi
@@ilovetati91 lmao Elizabeth Holmes is a horrible person but that has nothing to do with this
You can tell Penko haters were shoved into lockers and bullied 😂😂
09:37 WTF????? HOW SAID OUT ?
Terrible decision and behaviour from Bacchi
I don't get how the umpire can say he wasn't making a late call... it was an overrule, overrule's by their very nature are late calls because the umpire needs to first recognise a call hasn't been made by the linesman before they make their own call
Glad that Volynets won the game, cause that ball was so far out lol.
Ostapenko is pure evil.
Coco, eat snickers 😊
I want to talk to your manager.
Why not call the supervisor? He’s not doing anything anyway
cuz it will make him look even more stupid when he is overruled by the supervisor
Kalinskaya could've been such a good example if she agreed to replay the point. She would've won the set anyway (4-1 up).
Instead she took the point like a coward.
it's not her fault her opponent had a dumb moment
Tennis players should stop that “call the supervisor” crap. I’ve literally seen every video in this channel and never seen a supervisor overturn a call.
Where is the latest video? Clay season is finished and grass nearly is too
So much support for Gauff. Bacchi sucked here 100%
¿Por qué el chair umpire NO permite que el supervisor le aclare la regla a Gauff? Mi respuesta es que a los chair umpires no les gusta que venga el supervisor porque destapa su ineficacia e incompetencia para dirigir un partido.
Ostapenko might be the cringiest player to ever step on a tennis court, get in shape instead of crying all over
American social justice warriors made a huge meal of the Coco-Bacchi argument 😃 for regular tennis viewers, that's an argument that happens very often 😂
Bro what the f you can’t overrule the system are you kidding me? Thats why you are there.. you as well saw out and can’t overrule.. bullshit.. what a bit mistake, and problem is that no one get’s fined for that
