    Potapova/Arango:
    If you challenge while the point is live and lose the challenge, you lose the point. In this case the point was over when the line judge made the call, meaning the challenge came on a point meant to be replayed. Either the umpire did not see that Potapova put the ball back in, or she is saying that Potapova stopped the point with her challenge before the call, both of which are incorrect.
    Solution - at the ATP and WTA levels, all umpire chairs should require a video replay feature on the tablet (with audio), for umpires to check timings of things upon request and disagreements of fact, such as the case here.

    • @freakytea2815
      @freakytea2815 5 месяцев назад +5

      I agree, and I'm sure they would welcome that option. The umpires can't look at both sides of the court at the same time, and this umpire was probably looking at Potapova, who was about to challenge the call, and she ended up overruling and calling the ball in as well. That's a lot going on in the same moment, and no umpire can pay attention to everything at the same time. A replay system would help immensely.

    This Tig person needs to be told how tennis works. I'm shocked by her entitlement and lack of regard for her opponent and the chair umpire. She is absolutely delusional on every level and needs to be suspended for this behavior. If I had any power I would make it a point penalty to purposely take extra time as the receiver and make your opponent wait. That would stop the behavior right away.

      This, but they should actually detail the intricacies of the rule as needed for the situation. I feel like almost all of them lack the ability to understand situations and explain themselves in detail, whether it be for lack of feeling like they need to or translation issues. There was a situation between Tiafoe and Raonic in Toronto this year that was handled exceptionally well by Fergus Murphy. If all situations were effectively explained in detail, there would be a lot less of an argument by players.

    Matoula was really hard done by in that match. From the server's pace rule not being enforced to that shocking call at the end when Tig shouting 'out' in the middle of the point wasn't heard by the umpire. I don't know how it happens, but the WTA gets the worst umpires.

    The Potapova point is weird:
    Arango hits ball in, line-man calls it out, but umpire overrules it, Potapova hit's the ball back in anyway.
    In this scenario umpire should've made them replay the point, right? Since it was stopped because of a line judge's mistake, and she hit it back in.
    But she doesn't want a replay, she challenges, expecting the ball to be out, so that she wins the point.
    The slow-mo replay shows that the ball was in, so she doesn't win a point, so it should go back to replaying the point, right? Why would the umpire ever give point to Arango?
    Did the supervisor come and clarify it? Were they on the side of the umpire?

    • @user-oj7co5wm8g

      Even if Potapova returned the ball she stops the point to make a challenge. The call is in, so for me she lost the point. But this umpire is so bad that she can even tell her the reason...

    • @DvdStennis
      @DvdStennis 5 месяцев назад +6

      Potapova decided to challenge the call/overrule and therefore she lost the point when she lost that overrule. She did not have to overrule, in which case she would have gotten to replay the point. The umpire made the right decision, but strangely enough for the wrong reasons (hindrance had nothing to do with this).

    • @_APV_
      @_APV_ 5 месяцев назад +19

      @@remisaulneron8968 "she stops the point to make a challenge" but she didn't stop the point, did she? I thought the umpire stopped the play after she corrected the mistake? Or were they supposed to continue playing after all that "Out! Correction! The ball is in!"?
      Also, usually the challenge is deciding between whether the ball is out and player A wins, or whether ball is in and player B wins. But in this case if ball was in it is a replay, because the player hit it back.

    • @colinhoran9351
      @colinhoran9351 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@DvdStennis Considering that the umpire ruled there was hindrance and believed that Potapova's shot didn't land in, she was screwed either way no? If she hadn't challenged, the umpire simply would've said her return didn't land in and the call was late so it would've been Arango's point not matter what from the view of the chair.

      It is a thing that umpires are taught, mainly because the rules are devided in 2 sections: base rules and questions of fact. For example, if a player asks ''how many times can a ball bounce?'' that's a base rule (and a supervisor can be called for such things because he doens't need to see what happened in order to make a decision), if instead the problem is something that a referee needs to see in order to make a decision (ball in or out, double bounce etc) then that is a question of fact (and the supervisor cannot/should not be called)
