  • Defender 90 used to refer to the length of the wheelbase in inches. Now, the Defender 90 sits on a ~100" wheelbase, so it's not really true any longer. But, my theory is that if your kid could design a new SUV today, it would look exactly like this.
    Paul Maric reviews the 2021 Land Rover Defender 90 P300 to see what this pint-sized SUV is like both on- and off-road.

    Just a quick fun fact! Defender '90' used to refer to the wheelbase length in inches. While Land Rover kept the terminology, the wheelbase is actually over 100 inches now. So don't be fooled into thinking the '90', '110' and (soon to be) '130' actually means the wheelbase is the same size as the older Defender models.

    Great review Paul.
    The plastic inserts on the bonnet are a styling cue from previous generation Defender.
    Can’t do them as metal nowadays, due to pedestrian friendly impact safety design rules.
    Clear Sight rear vision mirror is particularly helpful / essential and safer when carrying people in back seat, and / or when rear is loaded to the roof, and super handy when u r towing.
    Rear Seat has a 40/20/40
    split fold function.
    The bottom part of rear seat easily clips out, which allows top part of rear seats to then fold fully flat.
    Previous generation Defender established a great heritage etc
    It was great off road, but for 98% of people it lacked everything else.
    Hardly anyone was buying previous Defender.
    It had no air bags, and not able to be sold in many countries either.
    New Defender is the right vehicle for 2021, and the people complaining that new Defender is not utilitarian enough, should get over it, and wait for the Ineos Grenadier.
    Besides great off road ability, that is enough for 95% of people, Defender now has safety, comfort, tech, features and it’s a great daily driver.
    If u want more off road ability, order it with these extra features and accessories etc, or modify it to suit your specific requirements.
    Covid delayed launch of new Defender last year, and caused further delays.
    LR still sold over 45,000 new Defender worldwide
    Probably sell over 70,000 new Defender this year.
    30,000 new Defender on back order.
    LR built the correct Defender for
    2020, and beyond.
    Still the 130 wagon, utes and other versions of Defender to come, and the Defender Sport model.
    Well done LR. 👍

    What a truly excellent, informative review, far superior to so many others. You've clearly taken the time to learn about the vehicle and approached it in an open minded manner. With any Land Rover review I'm waiting for the lazy stereotypical comments about `suspect' reliability, which in my experience is largely unfounded, and certainly no worse than many other car manufacturers and hardly surprising given that the same component manufacturers supply multiple competing car brands (i.e. ZF gearbox). The rear roof mounted camera is an excellent feature, if you're towing you can keep an eye on your trailer and contents, and the reverse camera guides your steering inputs on the screen allowing you to reverse confidently right up to the tow hitch. Actually the rear view mirror in `normal' mode is not as bad as you suggest, the rear headrests just flip down when not needed, though yes, even then, the spare tyre does affect visibility somewhat. Cheers from England

    Good review. My dad has had Land Rovers since 1986; first a 110 V8 county and now a 110 2.2 Puma. Both noisy and leaking and running well. His response is probably the same as most old Defender drivers; 'too much tech and too expensive'. He has a point I think, the entry level price is very high at $85k, especially after you tick a few boxes. Rear diff lock should be standard for the price. I was interested in one myself but I'm priced out of one. Keen to see what the Grenadier price is when it comes, though it's probably going to be $90-100k also. The Grenadier is closer to what prior Defender owners expect; live axles, ladder frame, coil springs. The new Defender really clashes with the Discovery price and luxury wise. If it was less flash and more basic, even with a solid axle in the back, to get the price closer to $70k I'd jump in.

    Hi mate, I am a big fan of your video. I believe this car is not equipped with terrain response 2. I have ordered defender 110 with rear diff lock and terrain response 1. Is the terrain response 2 really necessary? I am not a heavy off road but we do lot of beach driving (WA beaches for too soft). Please make a video on terrain response management and other manufacturers terrain management system.

    8:45- something will replace the original Defender and it's called the Ineos Grenadier, the new Defender is a nice car but you summed it up perfectly in the beginning of the video when you showed the cars that it competes with, nobody would have ever grouped the original with that market.
    This should have been branded as an off-road version of the Discovery and
    let the Defender name rest in peace and preserve the historical legend status.

    • @jerrymyahzcat
      @jerrymyahzcat 2 года назад

      He was totally wrong as it doesn’t compete with the cars he mentioned. It’s in a totally different class. None of those others are anything like the Defender 90 in terms of off-road capability.
      The Grenadier is just a copy of the old outdated Defender. Get used it it - the new Defender is the Defender.
      Why would they brand it as the off-road version of the Discovery when it’s nothing like the Discovery and the Discovery is already the off-road version of itself? Really??

    • @jerrymyahzcat
      @jerrymyahzcat 2 года назад

      @UCUxuvSVl3r-dXmqaumkM7bg well I fully disagree. Here in Australia the new Defender is a very capable off-road beast. Pummels lots of the competition (not all) but it’s 4WD system is superior than all others. Everyone is hung up on airbag suspension. It’s great (unless it fails obviously).

    Pretty much the spec I'd chose. Be fine for my use but anyone going into the wilderness is not going to want lots of electronics. They seem to have abandoned that market., as well as the fix it yourself, market.
    It's really a discovery. A luxury car that's also good off road.

  • @jerrymyahzcat
    @jerrymyahzcat 2 года назад +1

    Technically it’s a 3 door not a 2 door and the 110 is a 5 door not a 4 door. The rear door is counted.
    The new Defender is The perfect replacement for the old one. It’s come into the 21st century finally. Love it. I’d love a 110 myself.
    The rear windows in the roof are called Alpine windows and remember lots of basic things in that model such as the manual seat adjustment are because it’s the S. Different trim levels on Land Rovers provide different functionality - though many things can be opted in on lower spec models.
    Oh and this doesn’t compete with the cars you mentioned. It’s nothing like them and is in a totally different class. They can’t compete in any way with the off-road ability of the Defender 90 and are city cars whereas the Defender is an off-road beast.
    Centre mirror visibility isn’t a huge issue (especially with the clearsight option), I drive a light truck during the work day and you only have side mirrors. One gets pretty adept at seeing all you need to without a centre mirror - you’d soon adapt.

    If I was considering an outback trip to places difficult to get to, I'd consider one of these...and then probably lob for a LandCruiser of some description - I just feel suspicious of the reliability of these. I noted too, at around 10:43, the stitching on the seat fabric looked very poor in places. Not what I want in a vehicle in this price range. As a thought, Paul, you touch on things like build quality - and you (quite rightly) pointed-out an issue on the Rexton recently - so is it worth spending a minute or two discussing overall finish quality in a little more detail? But...another great review!

      Maybe because the Prado is often the second car that also has to serve as the transport for the school / soccer team run with three rows of seats, so they think they would not sell enough 3 door ones.

    I really like the 110. The only thing I am wary of is reliability. Past experiences with LR, make one think twice. The PR mambo jumbo is just talk. Give it a couple of years to build up some proof, and it might just change my mind

    • @robman2095
      @robman2095 2 года назад

      Yes, even if you are prepared to accept a lot of repair and maintenance charges you would want to think twice about going too far off the beaten track and betting your life on it. Probably okay for a day out near the big city though. Just make sure you stay within an area with mobile phone reception at all times or go in a group of vehicles. Any recovery could be expensive though if you go somewhere not covered your auto club.

    Not sure about the rubberised material durability, especially after 10-15 years. Not to mentioned if you always parked it outside in the heat of the sun. It will become gooey sticky and nasty in your finger. Maybe it's fine in Britain or any European countries temperature there is cooler compare to Aussies temperature.

      LR fans are eternal optimists aren’t they? And yet nothing much changes. I wouldn’t mind so much if the parts and service were reasonably priced but apparently they are not. Who would have thought? The options are so reasonably priced after all. Coloured paint only a bit over $2000! Quite reasonable. Those tints are so expensive. On the latest JD Power reliability survey I saw it was not even close between last position and the second worst. I will leave it up to you to do your own research on the subject 😂😂😂 Those reliability surveys are on vehicles a few years old after all so there is always hope for the eternal optimists. It has always been thus.

      Pretty easy choice really isn’t it if you want to be confident of getting back. However for higher status city driving with the occasional day out in the bush maybe the LR would be the go if you don’t rate the reliability issues so much of a concern.

    Which defender model starts at $71,000? On road cheapest is $83,000 with no options. No point in quoting RRP when dealers add $1000's on top as a delivery fee. Sure lux tax and state charges apply but RRP is useless and a lie if a $3-4K delivery fee also applies. If car companies want to charge that extra then it should be included in the price of the car. What you can negotiate off is separate discussion and wouldn't be affected if dealers were required by law to quote drive away and not RRP in advertisements.

    • @douglaslin5469

      The Prado feels heavy and vague. I have a bought new 1997 Prado GXL, and owned a 150 series diesel Prado Kakadu (the top model). It had some issues, and its adjustable rear suspension was not adjustable. And it was weak. It was also gutless and compared to the 90 series, very little road feel. The GXL Prado has the worst seats of any vehicle in its price range. Yet my 1997 GXL seats are marvellous. So I sold the Kakadu and bought a 6 month old Discovery 2014 HSE and the reliability issues have been wipers, and the driver's door rubber, which LR would not replace under warranty. The seal is still broken there but its hasn't leaked read dirt. I've had three chips in the windscreen too but glue fixes have worked. But the vehicle is more expensive to service, and I've had the transmission fluid changed at 70k, because LR doesn't tell drivers to do that, and they should. The vehicle is a joy to drive, as tight as a monocoque in feel and steering yet it has a chassis which protects the interior and allows add ons. While I love the new Defender but I wish it had a chassis, and the 110 is actually as big as the D3/D4 Discoveries. It's perfect for most of the world but for off road, give me a chassis.
