  • The Ford Bronco and Land Rover Defender are both two-door SUVs that are known for their strong off-road capabilities. In this video, Alistair Weaver and Carlos Lago from Edmunds take these two off-road vehicles out to demonstrate what they are capable of and what their differences are and discuss what they like and dislike about each off-road SUV. Back after 20 years, the new Ford Bronco is as popular as ever and offers extensive customization options and modern technology features. The Defender also returned after a lengthy absence, and while there's still a bit of a throwback feel with the design, the new Defender is a much more modern and comfortable vehicle than its forebear. It's the 2021 Ford Bronco vs. 2021 Land Rover Defender in this off-road SUV comparison test.

      It’s kind of ironic, the best off-road Defenders are the cheaper ones whereas the best Wranglers and Broncos are the top spec ones.
      To answer your question, yes, test against the Rubicon and the Sasquatch but with a base model Defender with only the real off-road options plus maybe better off-road tires and maybe the tow package.
      The new Defender is in its infancy. I’m expecting Land Rover to incrementally add niche models, something Ford and Jeep wisely did from day one. Land Rover seems to have initially gone after the high end of the Mall Crawling market with big engines, 22 inch wheels and luxury interiors. The image marketing however is largely focused on rugged off-road capabilities, so it does need to make good on that promise.

    Dad take, but of the three (Wrangler, Defender, Bronco) the Defender is the only one with a respectable crash test rating. Also, the lease rates are basically the same for well equipped models. The defender in my eyes is much better at double duty family/fun.

  • @jaldeborgh
    @jaldeborgh 2 года назад +6

    The practical reality for 99.9% of buyers is they drive 99.9% of the time on road or on off-road conditions that virtually any SUV can handle. The 0.1% of the challenging off-road driving is also generally purely voluntary and/or easily avoidable so not a true show stopper. The bottomline, you buy either of these vehicles for either it’s appearance, it’s comfort/luxury, it’s cost/price or how it makes you feel. Which to buy is really a “first world” problem both are outstanding so you can’t really lose either way.

  • @jaldeborgh
    @jaldeborgh 2 года назад +10

    You could significantly reduce the price and improve it’s off-road by buying the 2.0L 4 cylinder with 295 HP (selecting the 18” steel)wheels and adding the rear locking differential. Also save money by deleting the jump seat, which requires the “clear view mirror” option.

    I owned a 2020 Defender first edition 11 months and just had a chance to drive an outer banks bronco with Sasquatch yesterday. I was really hoping that the Bronco would split the difference between the Defender and Rubicon in feel but that is not the case. The Bronco is far closer to the Rubicon than the Defender. The interior is passable…. But laughable in comparison to the Defender. Piloting the Bronco on road with the Sasquatch is akin to piloting a large truck. Cushy, not unpleasant, but not in the same league as the Defender. Looks wise,,,, in the eye of the beholder. If you live on a coast, Defender is the way to go. If you live in the center of the country, the bronco will turn more heads. Both exciting cars and I’m glad to live in a time when we have multiple option in this category. Based on the spectacular looking 2022 Tundra TRD PRO, I can’t wait to see what Toyota cranks out for the 2023 4Runner. As long as you are happy and enjoying a road trip, or the great outdoors, you can’t go wrong with any of these new toys….

      @fraserhenderson7839 2 года назад +8

      Defender is laughably unreliable and overpriced. Tires and wheels are pleasant on highway are ridiculously low profile and delicate for off road. TFL blew 2 tires in 10 minutes on mild rocky trail while Bronco never slowed down. Bronco is made to live off road. It IS a truck! Defender has way too much mall crawler mentality.

    • @marklynn6907
      @marklynn6907 2 года назад +16

      @@fraserhenderson7839 i don’t recall any leaky roofs on the defender. Or any car designed and developed in the last quarter century.. but, yes, fords are great…. You can raise the suspension and add larger tires to the defender. Turning the bronco in to a better daily would take far more effort and money. We could argue all day long about the eventual fail of the defenders air suspension….. for 9/10ths of the actual driving done on pavement….even in inclement weather, we’d all be better off in a Subaru outback vs either defender or the bronco…. If you can only afford one car. The defender is the better choice. And if you can’t afford the defender, the bronco is a fine choice as well. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee trailhawk with the disconnect sway bar looks to be interesting as well. And, potentially the best all arounder…

      2020 Defender Owner here,
      It’s a specified option unfortunately, so if you want your seats to fold entirely flat in either the 90 or 110 you need to order the seats that are designed to do so.
      Like a previous commenter said there is a version of the seats where the bench portion folds/stands up and the seat backs fold down flat into that opening.
      If you do not have that option, you can not fold entirely flat, Just mostly flat in the 110 and something like 70% or so flat in the 90.
      The biggest problem for me with the 90 was left and right/blind spot visibility and the partition in the load floor that makes the load space essentially useless.
      110 is a far more well rounded utilitarian vehicle between the two, even if the internet prefers the looks of 90 or shorter wheel base for extreme off roading.

    Wouldn’t it make more sense to review the four door bronco or the bronco sport to the Land Rover? Also noted the Bronco does send power to the rear or the front tires depending on the mode. The engine is set up to have high torque at very low rpm’s compared to the land rovers throttle mapping of that of a street car for higher acceleration/top speed.

    • @fabulousoffroaddesigns5080

      You have to "ask" for the option, you have to pay for the option, you have to "ask" the system to work by lifting your hand and pressing the button. It only gives more articulation if you press the button, therefore "can give" seems the most appropriate. You need to have it AND use it to get more articulation.

I've been in multiple and have enjoyed two cross country trips totaling over 8,000 miles each with no problems with the defender. Besides a leaky tire in the rockies. I think LR gets bias reviews and opinions. It was completely deserved in the older generation of LR. Not long ago they had some bad issues. Bronco: 60/40 on/off-road (50/50 with Sasquatch)
    Defender: 80/20 on/off-road
    For reference a 100/0 rating would be a rock buggy with no interior and a 0/100 would be a lowered S class or something

      I’ve wasted so much of my time on these stupid reviews refuting inaccurate or completely biased views. It’s ultimately just not worth the effort, the Defender makes a great villain for a lot of people because it’s seen as soft and expensive like the one completely biased reviewer here rightfully points out about himself. Nevermind that the car was at least as capable if not more so than the bronco and much better in every other way (on-road, towing, payload). I think these reviewers know the Defender makes a great villain to the knuckle draggers and it adds up to a lot of hits. Anyways I used my wallet and voted and have been completely impressed with mine.

Sure people will cross shop them because well just because. But I think this is more of a mini Land Rover defender. I really like it. I’m specifically trying to lower my expenses as I get ready for retirement so high next week my newest car will be 2010 as I’m getting rid of the 2019 Honda CRV with expensive insurance.
