You know they are going to sell like 6 of these and then discontinue them. Then 5 years from now we'll all be lamenting how no one makes cars like the Defender 90 V8 anymore.

There has long been a following for LR90 V8's. Conversions from standard V8's are popular. I hope Land Rover continues to make the 90 V8 but include an Offroad, bench seat version as described by Doug.
The lack of towing hooks up front is probably a crash safety issue, LR should offer a removable tow hook system.
I would never want to own one, but I like that someone at Land Rover said "let's shove a V8 in the 2 door defender" and someone else said "hmm, good idea".
a nod to the old defender 90 v8 which sell for loads now
Did you think only Americans can make crazy cars? India is not far behind hahaha, maybe next time they’ll just take the top off the defender and slap a supercharger on top of the V8
At least it's quite fast, but it is British and land rover so it's likely going to be pretty unreliable and incredibly overpriced, not to mention the interior of this thing looks incredibly generic and plain. Especially for a land rover.

This feels like the modern day successor to the gmc syclone. So cool to see something like this in the state of the current auto industry even if it's not intended for the masses
LOL worst comparison ever! The Syclone is not meant to go off road.

Why isn’t this a thing anymore?
Imagine how Doug would freak out if there were a V8 Cabriolet version of the new Defender. He'd say shut up and take my money!
Wouldn't be too expensive to fab it with snap on vinyl top
tbh that would be really cool. the defender looks like the top comes off, they could leave the rear glass windows in too for the softop
Cabriogey
if Im not mistaken, there is a coachbuilder that does make convertible defender
The Scout version would be dope and... What's that on the horizon?!
I suddenly want this car very badly…
Edit 1: and however they came about the rear taillight design (every aspect) is absolutely amazing. Personally I love it.
Edit 2: wheelbase length is no different than width… adds stability in the direction they’re going. Width adds stability in corners, length adds it going straight. The thing is so short that’s why it feels sketchy…
Ditto, I want it too. It looks amazing in that color with those wheels, and that sound......
Sometimes you have to say to yourself, 'to hell with practicality - just look at the f'g thing!'
Yup may the god of money bless me I'm in line to get that!
Just wait 8 years and buy a used one for 30k
Quick Note, All Defenders have a front recovery point ring directly under a panel under the front bumper. If you get the upgraded front skid panel, it exposes this ring for easier access
As does every car

I think this is cool, I like when auto makers build stuff out of the norm that is possibly a little nuts.
I saw one of these flying down Michigan Ave in Chicago the other day and it was one of those things where you love it but also hate it when you see it.
I love all of these videos from Doug, and this is another solid review HOWEVER, the title of this one should have been: “Doug justifies his personal vehicle purchase.”
13:23 Of course the Defender has a front recovery point. There is one recovery eye centered underneath where the skid plate is. You can’t see it from the high angle you show.
Also please checkout accessory VPLEP0436 FRONT UNDERSHIELD - it is alternative plate which expose front recovery hook.
Came here to ask whether they had done away with this. Usually can be accessed under the plastic shield by removing 4 screws, or all the time if fitted with the aluminum front undershield as another commenter pointed out…
Yep. It has it. Would be silly not to. Doug actually thinks they neglected it.
Legally every car has to have a tow point both front and rear (I forget which market though) so it will definitely have one
Doug, accordingly with Wikipedia, a Yaris is just 3995mm long, which means half a meter shorter than this Two Doors Defender
The first thing that came to my mind. The Corolla would be more comparable
Even if he meant the sedan, it's still way shorter. Since when is 4400 considered compact lol, even a Golf is 4300 and it ain't compact.
There’s a Yaris sedan you know?
Without the spare
when he said Toyota Yaris, My mind automatically auto corrected it to Toyota Rav 4.
Kudos to Land Rover for figuring out a proper way to integrate the front radar sensor. Don't know if any other company also integrates it into the front badging but that's pretty slick
A ton of companies do! It’s a good place to have those sensors for sure
Doug is the type of guy who'll always be there to constantly remind you that he owns a 2020 Land Rover Defender (:
In this day and age of the big engine options being discontinued, I really hope this Defender is not the last time we get something so delightfully ridiculous from a major manufacturer. Thanks so much for doing this Land Rover!
I really wish I had the means to buy one of these.... What an awesome creation.
V8 engines are not ridiculous lol
People keep saying that "big engines are going away" and then like 10 cars with huge engines just like this are announced every year lmao. It's literally just a trick to make fools pay more
was thinking the same thing. I personally like the supercharged v8 in the long run over a twin turbo v6's...
Big engine options being deleted? Where?
2012: maybe if I save up 100k one day I can own a supercar
2022: *every new car 100k, supercars 2m*
100k barely puts you in a Wagoneer lol.
Even with its shortcomings because of the power on the two door model, I still insanely love this car. It is the coolest car on the market! It is amazing!
💯💯 wish it was shorter in height..also it's so expensive at 90k
Doug, you can pull the front panel off the lower valence with a coin and 4 half turn fasteners, there are massive tow eyes built in, but it's no use if you don't take it off before going into the muck.
I really appreciate that they offered this in two-doors, if all you see are four-door SUVs, how boring cars have become. The Wrangler, Bronco, and this are all on my list, only because they offer them in two door, thank you!
i am considering going through the trouble of getting a bronco BECAUSE its offered as a 2 door. I’d love to have a 2 door offroader
Explain to me what makes the 2-door desirable? 23:00 mark is exactly how I have always felt about most overpowered 2-door SUVs, not to mentioned the loss any real practicality (same concept of going from a 4-door sedan to a coupe). They aren't even actually good off-road, there is a reason why the kings are all 4 doors (aka longer wheel based).
@@acywei Exactly my thoughts, I suppose the only pros of a 2 door is it kinda looks cool to some people? What a waste of money
shit is ugly af wym
Evoque comes in 2 door versions too
20:00 This is how minimalism should work. I cannot stand cars that remove physical buttons and replace them with touch screens that require you to take your eyes off the road even if you know exactly where those touch buttons are.
16:15 The driving camera isn’t a _bizarre feature…_ it is a _welcome addition_ for anyone who takes their Defender _off-road._
Seriously...and he says he offroads in his 110. I call bullshit.
Yeah but what he's saying is how bizarre it is that you can use the camera even if you drive your car faster than in an offroad situation, just like he was doing on the motorway.
@@jerzy3144 Why not? Why automatically disable the feature based upon speed? Case in point: You are off-roading in an area where there are faster sections, but also where there are tighter squeezes/ rock crawling. Instead of having to go through and select the camera option every time you need it, you can just leave it on.
@@newthesis9480 Maybe because it's quite a glaring distraction to the drivers who think this is cool enough to gawk at during highway speeds? I don't know, to me it's highly unnecessary to display during high speeds and potentially dangerous. Mind you, when you are surrounded by traffic, the camera will probably show that and it could prove "too interesting" to those that simply don't respect the dangers of public roads enough to think better than look at it.

I just placed an order for mine and i can't wait to get it! My current car is a honda element which i love, this is very close to the look of the element. Great review 👏
Has a front tow hook… it’s under the cover under the bumper (can add an exposed tow hook metal shield there as an option). Can sync the climate temp up by simply pushing the button in the top right corner of the button pad…. It’s the little things.
That button with three arrows and the passenger icon? Weird.
But also I think Doug means fixed tow hooks. All cars have the removable ones.

It needs some canards or lateral wing stubs or some serious downforce ductwork underneath to make it stick without going all like a Yahtzee dice roll coming out of a cup, LoL!
i think the designers and have thought about that, you cannot beat an American built car lol. what cannot go round corners at speed

Grerat video. Sad to see these go out of production. Awesome vehicle. The need for a capable 4wd wont go away.
I've been watching Doug for years and I don't know why I have to finally say something with this video specifically but I've NEVER EVER seen someone get in the back seat of any car the way Doug does everytime. I guess with this one it finally seemed like "Ok, dude... C'mon... You're dramatizing it a little too much."
I think the same thing every time I see it. Imagine being in the back seat when he enters ass first.
And who gets in the back seat from the driver side anyway? usually the passenger side seat slides up further due to no steering wheel etc.
Also no one gets into the backseat of a two door car facing backwards
Well... it really is a hustle to get back there even from the passenger side. I had a chance to drive around the Defender 90 D250 for a couple of days, so I had to check those rear seats out. Strangely it's even more challenging to get out of the rear bench. And to top it off I also installed a baby seat in the rear. Now that's what I call real drama.
Yeah I've never even thought about getting in the back BACKWARDS lol!
Someone “curb checked” the spare tire! LOL
They were probably using it as the rear parking sensor. CRUNCH "Yep, that's close enough!"

Every single new Defender comes with a front recovery point... You just have to remove the black plastic cover first. There is even a dealer-installed option for a metallic bash plate that has a cutout for the recovery point.
Ya but that plastic part is trash. Wish they would just expose them all. First time I took that cover off to pull someone off the clips just broke.

That surround camera thing makes sense since it's an off road vehicle, it's good to see everywhere if you're off roading. However I have to say they really missed the opportunity to show on the mode on left dial since it's already a screen.. lol
I have to say that Land Rover has come a long way since I had a Series III 88" (the short version compared to the long one which was 109") in the 80's. My 88" had a petrol inline four of 2286 cc which produced 71 HP and 162 Nm. I also had a long version (ie 109") which had a petrol inline six of 2625 cc which produced 86 HP and 179 Nm. Fantastically nice cars both, but from a completely different era. A big difference from today's Land Rover Defender 90 is that my Series III 88" actually had 7 seats including a jump seat in the center front. Of course it also had a so-called safari roof with 4 roof vents and side windows. It also had 2 spare wheels. One mounted on the hood and one hung on the back door :)
well to be fair, that old and dare I say marvelous series III would even today manage to get virtually everywhere...I doubt that the new defender has even half the capabilities and the reliability (or rather easy repairability) of the old ones. Personally I would still prefer the Defender V8's of the early nineties, which optionally came with the Vitesse RV8...190 bhp and a curbweight of less than 1650 kg is perfectly fine imho
This is what many 2 Door Yukon and Tahoe enthusiasts have been waiting for, only its a Land Rover. It also reminds me of a much larger and stylish version of my JB64 Suzuki Jimny!

The Defender does have a front recovery point, and I'm surprised you didn't read about it in the manual of the one you've owned for a while, or poked around and found it. It's under the black plastic panel right in the middle down low, and LR has done it this way since the LR3/D3 days.

Yes, and the 90 is also not as good for serious offroading. The short wheelbase makes them more tippy.
@@elrey8876 completely wrong. The short wheelbase improves approach, departure, and breakover clearance and also helps maneuverability on tight trails.
Thank you so much for the dad joke at 18:33! Heartfelt congratulations to you and your wife on becoming parents as well, and thanks for reviewing this immensely desirable version of the Defender.
Doug, nice vid and I appreciate that you have a new LR Defender (very cool), but I think you are missing two points from your great vid.
1 - The LR V8 dates back a long way. Yes, the modern one is totally different but there have been ‘Series’ V8s since the mid-1960s, though at the time they were rare. In the 1980s the Rover V8 was a bit more common, but often in export or military LRs, including the US and through to the 1990s. Point is the V8 has been a very stalwart engine in LRs. There’s quite a bit of heritage here. What was your yellow one?
2 - Moot point but I’m not fussy about a car not having a ‘very good driver assist’ system. A car where the driver doesn’t actually need to steer isn’t really a car I’d be interested in. If a driver cannot steer, then they aren’t really driving, surely?
Cheers!
I work for the company that processes these at the port of entry. I help to make sure they don’t come in damaged, leave our facility clean and I place all of your interior protection and cargo items in the back. Ummm yeah?
I don’t think regular working people should be buying a luxury SUV from a notorious unreliable brand such as Land Rover. Why do you think muscle cars were popular? Cheap straight line speed with V8 power and sound.

I love that cars like this is still being made, and i absolutely understand why they offer the 90 with the v8. they already have all the parts and adding them to a short 90 vs the longer 110 can't possibly cost all that much more, if they sell a thousand of them they will probably break even, and I bet enough people are gonna find this hilarious that they can justify it. way to go Land Rover!

Defenders do have a front recovery hook. It's under the plastic front skid panel. It's dumb because if you get stuck, you have to lay in the mud or snow and unscrew the panel. The best solution, install the OEM metal skid plate. It has an open window for the hook.
BMW IX has the same door opening blind spot thingy. But it also won’t let you open the door if a car is driving towards you in your blind spot
I used to own a classic 2 door v8 defender 20 odd years ago now.... they were beasts then..... wait till you try out the Ineos Grenadier
Dang. That spare has some *SERIOUS* curb rash! I'm guessing what shipped-as-spare is actually mounted on a corner now because someone completely screwed up that one.
3:15 actually is less than 4m in length. 4420 mm is probably referred to the Yaris sedan
Even the sedan is shorter than that, just over 4300. Don't know where he is coming up with those numbers.
The delivery of the talking points is SO GOOBER but he is definitely thorough & concise.
GOOBER!!!! LOL
Excellent review
I laughed hard from 23:30 - 24:01 your description of the hood raising at high speeds - as you are describing it you can see the crazy suspension travel in the background when you accelerate lmao. your description of it, the visual and the smirk on your face as you describe how sketchy it gets at high speeds made me laugh
I’ve always been reluctant to buy a Land Rover since I’ve always heard reliability is bad and prone for many days in the shop.. but I sure love the styling.
@18:22 - 18:35.... the way his smile died, along with the pun.... Lol
i saw one of these things in person in white and black accents and it was stunning
Keep up the good work man !💪💪
3 months ago I took a brand new Land Rover for a test drive. The drivers window didn't work and there was a loud clunk every time I hit a large bump. When I got back to the dealership the guy said "Yeah, it's a Land Rover?!? What did you expect?!?!" Ummm, ok. I bought a Telluride.
Well he's a shit salesman.
Imo you made the right choice. Telluride or Palisade would be in my driveway if I could afford one
I would have tried to push both buttons for climate control st the same time to make them sync going by the magnificent logic behind every 1/8 of this interior. Wow. A beauty.
Thank you for watching❤️❤️

I want one of these badly! A V8 Defender 2 door, and my 992 GT3. No kids yet so the GT3 has been fine. Kinda miss a more “luxurious” commute though 😂
