There's always been rich people, even the most poverty stricken and deprived nations in Africa and places like North Korea have rich people. The existence of rich people, and consequently, the existence of expensive things for rich people to buy is not a surprise, nor is it a bad thing in and of itself. What _is_ a surprise, and also represents a definite shift compared to what I was always told growing up, is that the divide between the rich and the rest used to be much smaller here compared to those places. The rich weren't any less rich, but the rest was much, _much_ less poor. Like, sure, a rich person could always afford a Ferrari or a Rolls Royce, but your average Joe could still afford a decent car in our society - and _that's_ just not true anymore. The gap between the rich and the rest has now grown to the point where the few rich people drive around in >£100.000 cars, while the rest of us get to live in squalor, struggling to afford our groceries and energy bills. If that's not enough, that's all made even worse by the fact that the people who can afford to pollute are effectively allowed to do so, while you're being priced out of owning a car even approaching this that you _would_ be able to own, if not for the excessive tax penalties placed on them because it's supposedly bad for the environment. And all of that stems from the managerial, redistributive style of governance that we've had since, I'd say probably the late '90s.

The original defender was always the best vehicle for anyone who lived in remote areas but it was let down by being slower than walking in most cases and technologically being so out of date that a cigarette lighter was considered futuristic so it makes sense that a version that fixes these things goes immediately to the top of a lot of people's shopping lists. Then there's the cool factor which elevates it even further.

I've got the D300 Disco. Basically the Defender is a Disco in jeans rather than a suit. It's the same platform and can do the same offroad but in more luxury. Would like to see a head to head between them both.
Actually you CAN make your own driving mode using the configurable offroad setting. I did the same to give my D300 diesel a sports mode as it doesnt normally have it like the V8. Also, the SV engine us coming to the Defender Octa ;). 635 hp and faster acceleration is coming up.

@@xirfan and the easy to steal. I can see a lot of dealers getting frustrated with inventory. They can’t shift except if it was Dubai I think it would be different.
Fun fact: there’s no such thing as an old Land Rover, after 5 years you’ll have had to replace pretty much everything, essentially leaving you with a brand new car.
I have a 3.0 L MHEV Diesel. Has 300 hp and does 0-100 in 7 sec, it is more than what you actually need. This is a tall SUV with not a lot of soundproofing at higher speed, above 130 km/h you will definitely feel the wind noise.
It is a style/transporter thing, not a "rough off roader" thing. Land Rover is a business. They gather in a conference room and ask themselves "how can we make the most return for our shareholders", not "how can we spend billions tooling up to make a vehicle that a very small group of true off roaders will buy". It is a fair practice. Nobody makes anyone buy them. But they are well designed aesthetically, so people want to drive them to the mall and school pickup.
@@eastbaystreet1242 The thing with the new defenders is they are actually engineered to go off road in extreme conditions, take one off road and it will outperform an old defender any day of the week, my family have had over a dozen old defenders over the years and even some old series land rovers, I’ve always loved them however these new ones are just better off road and on road out of the box. I’d personally rather have an old defender over a new one but that’s just preference really. I mean everyone complains and says that this ones “lost the farmers” but in reality they lost the farmers years ago in the late 90s to early 2000s when they all started buying Japanese pickups. The old defender just didn’t make any sense any more to a farmer since a pickup was cheaper, more reliable and more comfortable and could often go off road better. At the end of the day most people won’t take these off road but if you ever did they are great.
@@Lewis2710 Agree. I was just making the business case. I have been driving them off road since 1993. We still have Land Rovers (2 of them). We will always have them. But I am a guy whose first car was a tin box 1960s Bronco, so it gets in your blood.

@@martinwilliam5536 But I have internet and I listen to experts like Scotty Kilmer and many honest mechanics, even Matt Watson listed the Land Rover/Jaguar as one of the most unreliable cars. Generally speaking, Europeans make really beautiful, comfortable fun to drive cars even mechanically reliable like Benz and BMW engines that are bulletproof. But when it comes to the electricals and electronics of the car, European cars fall behind the Japanese, especially Toyota and Honda. Benz is filled with advanced tech so like BMW but those electronics are not reliable. I do not know why. It's not like the Germans and the Brits do not have the tech, but they are just not reliable. My simple idea is if you are rich and want to show off and/or comfortable ride, go for a Rolls, S-class, 7 series, etc. If you want to enjoy driving and you are rich, go for a Porche, BMW. If you are super rich and love beautiful cars and want to show off, go for a Lambo or a Ferrari. If you are a middle-class person who is mature enough not to show off, is not a biased or blind fanboy of a particular car brand and does not really put a lot of priority into the super comfortable or super driving machine but absolutely care about value for money, low maintenance and importantly want to drive a million KM without major repair, Go for a Toyota or a Honda. Do not point out one faulty model of a Toyota or a Honda and try to dismiss my argument, every car maker has produced cars with issues which is not expected but I am talking about the common scenario, Peace.
It doesn't make sense to me. Far too expensive to be a workhorse and not nice enough to compete with quality standards in that price range. It's basically just for shooting parties to avoid getting their range rovers dirty
I'm a bit in the same boat. Taking something like this offroad is not happening. At least no in terrain it actually wins. Same with a range rover But it costs the same as a gle, x5 or XC90. And I just don't know why, driving comfort wise, I'd pick this.

Honestly , i dont know anything about the Land Rover over all but this Defender is such a beautiful car, its expensive and I don't know if its worth its price but it looks damn good!

You can spec configurable dynamics, which lets you customise the steering/throttle response combination etc.
Actually you CAN make your own driving mode using the configurable offroad setting. I did the same to give my D300 diesel a sports mode as it doesnt normally have it like the V8.
Also, the SV engine us coming to the Defender Octa ;). 635 hp and faster acceleration is coming up.

I have a 3.0 L MHEV Diesel. Has 300 hp and does 0-100 in 7 sec, it is more than what you actually need. This is a tall SUV with not a lot of soundproofing at higher speed, above 130 km/h you will definitely feel the wind noise.
22" wheels are useless for off-road. It is a Defender in name only.
British army won't be buying it. More sales for Toyota Land Cruiser
They’re properly good off road, better than my dads 110, the terrain response makes a huge difference even on road tyres

Am guessing u don't have 1 that's the v8 no issues
My Range Rover L322 3.6 is just over eight seconds 0 to sixty and that feels plenty adequate on the road thanks Matt.

Taking something like this offroad is not happening. At least no in terrain it actually wins.
Same with a range rover
But it costs the same as a gle, x5 or XC90. And I just don't know why, driving comfort wise, I'd pick this.
I mean I love it - the V8 Defender is kind of a bargain G63 and I think it looks just as cool. And even if you do 15mpg, it has 90L (20 gallon) tank so you have a min 300 mile range, so not too bad.
