It’s time for some EXTREME off-roading!
We’ve got our hands on a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, a Land Rover Defender 90 & an INEOS Grenadier, and they’re about to go head-to-head on one of the muddiest off-road courses we’ve ever driven on!
The cars will be taking on several challenges, from an off-road drag race to testing their abilities to crossing rutted pathways and driving up super steep hills, and we’re about to find out which of these three is a must-have for tackling the muddiest of off-road courses.
So let’s see how the three compare. Starting with the Jeep, it’s powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo that can deliver 272hp and 400Nm. It comes with four-wheel drive and costs around £62,500.
Alongside it, we have the Defender, which is equipped with a 3-litre straight-six turbo diesel that can put down 300hp and 650Nm of torque. It comes with four-wheel drive and costs around £68,000.
Finally, we have the INEOS. It’s housing a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six under the bonnet, and this produces 249hp and 550Nm. It also comes with all-wheel drive, and it’s the most expensive car here, costing around £76,000.
All cars come with tech to help with off-roading, such as high & low range mode, as well as lockable diffs. The question is, which will triumph over this series of tasks? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

You can’t even put a real off road tire on the Defender, wheels are too big. Sorry, no excuses, this is how the mfgs made them.

Like they want one car to purposely look bad. I'm always writing about tires but they are not showing which ones they use for each car, which they should for off road challenges.
I remember when they ran Toyota Hilux on summer tires on one of the challenges.

2:55 you talk about engine power and Newton meters but never show us the tires of the vehicles, which in this case would be much more interesting because the tires play a very big role in such challenges

That drag race like that on flat mud is all about tyres. You want a chunky spread out tread and not too wide so that it digs in and doesnt float on top. A fiesta with the right tyres would ace it. Fun but I think they all need to be on the same tyre to test the vehicles.

I know there a bit of fun and I do enjoy them but for for off roading all vehicles need to run the same tyre otherwise it's pointless.
Much like Pikes Peak Hillclimb cars actually. All cars should also have passed the crash test before it even ready for Hill Climbing events.

@@pbart9821 most can be had with different tires from the factory. Plus, anyone doing any off-roading in these won't run the stock tires anyway, so it's stupid not to put them all on the same off-road tire

@stefanpetrov8 Land Rover doesn't offer offroad tyres like Jeep and Ineos and when you want to put a good set of muddies on it you cant cause its rim is too big at 20 inches, most offroaders dont have larger than a 17 or 18 inch. If you watch TFL when they put it against a Bronco and Wrangler the tyre literally popped off on a tiny rock
Come on guys, it isn’t like you can’t afford to splash out on a control tyre. You’d probably get sponsored by one of the major tyre suppliers.

That is why if I get a defender the first mod I’m making is a set of 16” rims with some proper off-road tyres.
Man the guy who decided to create Ineos is a legend, I don’t know who else dares to bring a brand new vehicle these days that is not Electric and allied with Land Rover’s classic design and BMW’s engineering, I mean hope ppl can appreciate this and buy this amazing, good looking, off-road worthy vehicle.
The low traction launch is meant for taking off in low traction areas as smoothly as possible. it isn't launch control for slippery conditions 😂

The Grenadier is really starting to grow on me, I absolutely love it. Tough choice between a Defender 110 and a Grenadier for me.
It depends on what you plan to do with it, if you plan on off-roading the grenadier wins, but the 110 is just so much better on road

If it’s not at a LR dealership having warranty work , that’s assuming you can get it insured .
Only joking , good car but the grenadier is built like a tank and built to last with almost all the components being hand picked best in class partners .
Don’t forget the grenadier has 5 seats £79k and the 3 door LR tested was over £90k for a two seater is ridiculous !

Defender is a far better car.
The Jeep Wrangler is no longer “American”. It’s made by Stellantis, an “Italian” company.
That is like Land Rover is Indian from tata or perhaps Chinese from chery.

Remember, When doing this off-road challenges, you might as well install all-Terrain Tires to all the cars to maximize their off-road capabilities👍🏾

As a Jeep owner ( thanks to my youth in Detroit), I’m delighted with the win. I currently have a Wrangler SWB. Very rare animal here in Cork. (Ireland). Keep ‘em coming- very enjoyable.

Yes, all about the tires. But this was much more fun than your standard off-road challenges have been previously. Mud-bogging and rock crawling (instead of ruts) would make it just about perfect.

Of course in the mud, off road 3PSI to 10PSI in your tire is the normal way to drive. Airing down its almost more important than using your lockers. All Terrain tires aired down has usable sidewalls for extra traction in mud in particular.
In Texas we have quicksand that looks perfectly dry most of the time.
If you want payment ride quality get the G-Wagon on the other hand a Jeep can be whatever you want it to be with infant aftermarket quality parts even if you just want a smoother ride someone makes it. ACCU AIR from Summit Racing is 7K for a Jeep and can be installed in your driveway or a shop in a day and is going to last as long as a Range Rover suspension probably longer.

Great vid. Suggestion..... Do test showing the difference between normal tyre pressures and very low tyre pressures off road. From experience, it makes a huge difference.
This was amazing to watch, please do more videos like this. Next time might I suggest cars that you use shouldn't off-road, make it more exciting.

I find it weird that Land Rover sells you an offroader with road tires from New, that just doesn't make any sense, even lexus with the LX sells it from the dealer with either all-surface or offroad tires depending on what you want
You get the option of Road or All Terrain with the new defender in UK
coz land rover knows most of the customers r not going offroad anyways that's y they're competing against compact suv's when it comes to ride & handling however they still offer u all terrain tyres before purchase

I put KO2’s on my 90 as soon as I got it.
Considering you can get a Jeep for a quarter of the price of the other two in the U.S., there's no wonder they sell them as quick as they can make them. Single handedly keeping Stellantis afloat. Don't change wrangler.... don't change.

When coming down a steep hill, you should throw it in 4 low, lock the rear, and let it come down without pressing the brake.
Descent control is bullcrap.
Also, when climbing the hill, throw it in reverse, back up a bit, floor it right up.

Can't recall if this was also done earlier or not, but at 20:41 you show the Jeep's "forward collision avoidance off" dash light when mentioning stability control being turned off.
For everyone complaining, this video is clearly just for fun as opposed to drawing actual scientific conclusions. Almost like the old episodes of Top Gear.

I get that people are complaining about the tires, but these are stock tires. If they underperform the manufacturer should replace them. If you put aftermarket tires for testing, then the review is not fair based on the package that the customer gets. Most people won't prepare their vehicle at all.
Yup. This is the most representative way
But then most drive on the road, then purchase aftermarket rubber if doing a lot of off roading.
I'd have given equivalent tyres across the board. So it's down to the vehicle and driver rather than the rubber they happen to have at the time of the test.
To be honest the whole video is about testing the cars against each other...but...when you are offroad the best way to actually compare the cars against each other is to give them all the exact same tyres...because if you dont then the only thing you are comparing is tyres and not the cars at all...
And I understand that with all carwow's videos the cars never really have the same tyres on the tracks and runways.... but.....when you are doing offroad, the tyres makes too big of a difference to make it a logic comparison.
If your out playing in mud like this you would fit different tyres! They should have all be on the same more aggressive tyre if this was to be fair. But it was still a good watch so who cares
@alexandersimpson3638 I think thats a good approach. But some cars are designed to run on certain tires, this isn't as apparent until you get to the Hypercar Holy Trinity which doesn't really matter here.
Bit silly if not all on same tyre or at least most offroad focus that can be fitted like the mud tyre on Defender you can get stock. Use mine with them in mud all time and its best off roader I have ever used - grew up with jeeps, pickups and old Defenders.
My new Defender was pretty rubbish in a muddy field, until l changed the stock road biased tyres for some Goodyear Wranglers.
lt made a big difference, although fuel economy fell a little.
l can't tell what tyres are fitted to the Defender in this test, but l think the two LWB live axle vehicles had the edge.

I think we’ve all been looking forward to a new Top Gear team and I’ve gotta say you guys have got what it takes the dynamics between the three of you keep up the great work it’s amazing entertainment I’ve not had this much fun since Top Gear was really good and then sadlyit all went rather wrong but thankfully we’ve got the grand tour but yeah you guys are creating great content keep it up

The Defender is my favourite having driven it offroad in the snow up a Scottish mountain and it didn't miss a beat all day.

I've winter-driven my front motor rear-wheel drive Fiat 1300 with winter tires on in 1980's and it never missed a beat in Balkan mountains.

Ineos and Wrangler comes with the same KO2 tyres, but the wrangler is a bit larger.
Tires make the largest difference off road, if all the vehicles do not have the same tires, you are not actually comparing the capabilities of the vehicles themselves.
I love that something that started out as ads for a car sale website has become the spiritual successor to Top Gear.
