  • The new Land Rover Defender is winning plenty of plaudits but what's it really like to live with? To find out, I tested this Defender 110 P400 in all conditions; rain, snow, floods, shopping and commuting to see if this really is a proper Defender.

    The Defender has become what the original Range Rover was. It’s comfortable on and off road, you sit up high with great vision, it’s got that farm ruggedness that can be hosed out and you can use it almost anywhere, on the farm and at the theatre. The new RR is more of a super luxury car now. Sitting lower and nested in its interior. Quite different to the original RR. This Defender is a real man’s wagon, compared to the over refined super fine interior of the RR. I love mine! It’s not an old defender. They can’t be made anymore due to modern day vehicle requirements. Its not a disco either. It’s better than that. It’s an old-new RR. But Land Rover are keeping that a secret 😮.

    My friend in Australia recently purchased a new Defender. After three months of ownership these are his comments. He lives in Outback NSW, but not too remote.
    1. When you start it, its a lottery whether it fires up on all cylinders. Sometimes its three or two but he has to cycle the igntion a few times to get it going on four. The nearest dealer is 500kms away. (The Toyota dealer is 16kms).
    2. He says its a Disco upgrade with less fruit. Its not a Defender.
    3. Prolonged driving in soft sand causes the transmission to overheat and get locked in neutral. (twice). The second time it needed a retrieve by the dealer at a cost to JLA of $2200.
    4. He paid A$80k for it three months ago. He went to the Toyota dealer about trading it in on a Landcruiser Prado. He was offered A$45k. Says it all.

I opted for the outgoing 4 Cylinder Diesel which earned me a discount of around £4k which is still unheard of at most dealers. The 4 pot is still a great drive with plenty of power and torque and returning around 28 mpg and that's with only 1500 miles on the clock, this can only improve. All great but look how complex and sophisticated it is, all those electronic systems, engine technology, hybrid superchargers, trick suspension, sensors everywhere... all great until it breaks, then they cost a fortune to fix these luxury systems you never really wanted in the first place, and forget trying to fix them yourself simply impossible. No farmer is going to be repairing the variable valve lift and cam timing systems in his barn on that thing. The beauty of the old defender is its simplicity, easy for anyone to fix and maintain, parts are easy and cheap to get hold of or even make yourself. You could probably remove, rebuild and reinstall an old defender engine in a day on a driveway. I bet in 30 years time the scrapyards will be full of these with failed ECUs, supercharger systems, air suspension, variable cam timing systems, emmisions systems etc etc whilst the originals just keep on going and going and going, no engine warning lights on them! If I was a farmer, what would I rather have, something I can fix myself for next to nothing when one of its handful of components happens to break, or something that costs me a fortune to repair anytime anything happens to one of its hundreds of expensive pointless parts.

    • @knapmann
      @knapmann 3 года назад

      "I cant get over the tech, its a very sophisticated engine" should be heard as "its extremely overly complex, theres so much to go wrong, and when it does it'll cost you a fortune, they'd have been better off with a basic pushrod V8"

    I love how a proper off-road car then has an optional “off road pack”. Also those extra little lamps on the rear right at the edges I’m sure are for meeting a regulation that says you’ve got to be able to see both rear lights from a certain angle. If you check, the spare wheel obscures the main lamps fairly quickly, but the ones of the edge remain visible.

    By all accounts, it is an amazing package, the new Defender. And I have seen quite a few video reviews that back that up. And I do love the new, yet retro styling of the exterior, and the interior. And on paper, not much comes close.
    However, I think I'll wait for an urban used one, cos even £45k is beyond my price range atm.
    But I agree, I think the new Defender is gonna be a big hit, especially when the commercial variant comes to market. I have already seen a few of these on the road already, and they do have a great stance and sit very nicely, and seem to have bags of composure. So once again, it looks like Land Rover have created the perfect off roader for our times.
