New Toyota Land Cruiser vs Defender, G-Class & Grenadier

- When the going gets tough, who’s toughest?
That’s the question Top Gear set out to answer when we sent the new Toyota Land Cruiser off into the Welsh wilderness together with the facelifted Mercedes G-class, the latest Land Rover Defender, and the 4x4 that apes ye olde Defender, the Ineos Grenadier.
We sent these four 4x4s clambering over rocks, wading through rivers, and generally doing the sort of stuff they’re designed for but never actually do in the hands of most buyers.
Which clawed its way out of the mud ahead of its rivals? Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage and Tom Ford are your referees…

Probably go with the Grenadier.
The Land Cruisers sibling, the Lexus GX550 Overtrail. For the 70K USD, it's better than the similar equipped & priced Land Cruiser, with better 4WD system, V6TT (instead of I4TT), 9K towing capacity (instead of 6K), and with a 3rd row 7 seating capability, instead of 5 seater of the hybrid-Land Cruiser.
Land cruiser the old one lol the new one sucks

A friend and myself once got stuck going up a scree escarpment in an old Defender. It kept digging itself into the loose scree. A first gen G Wagon showed up going down the same escapement and offered to help. We winched the two cars together and the G Wagon proceeded to pull the defender all the way up the escarpment in reverse without getting itself stuck and without struggling to pull the heavy defender. It did the ~100m run in one go without stopping. The old G Wagons are IMMENSE off road machines 🔥 🫡

Or an ATV.
More cars should have overhead button consoles like the Grenadier. Manufacturers really should tap into our childish need to feel like we're piloting the Millennium Falcon or a 747 rather than driving round a tesco car park.
I agree with you 100%.
To hell with touch screens.
We need more mechanical ceiling switches with a ridiculous number of crackles.
I'm half joking, half serious, if you want to make it look cool to use a touch screen to find and set up menus, take a page out of a sci-fi movie. LOL
I know right. It’s a cool car period
It seems fun until you have to start living with it and you very quickly realise that overhead buttons are just an annoying gimmick. But if you're buying cars just to driving around Tescos car park, I guess that's your thing, lol.
Would you pay $5000 more new and $500 more for repair?
It really sums up these muppets. They say the Ineos buttons are too confusing. FFS, how hard is it to work out a rear diff lock button.
I can tell you after 5.5 years of G Wagon ownership (same redesigned chassis) there is NO shake or “shimy”. The G is rock solid and you will never hear a rattle or squeak.
It kills me people keep comparing the Grenadier to the Defender. Zero similarity. The Grenadier is a bargain budget G Wagon sharing Magna Steyr roots. Handling perhaps more like a 460.
Shake or shimmy migraine inducing shudder is the Toyota truck way, not the G or Defender in any way.
G Wagons are for knobs.
@christschool have you ever seen a REAL Gelandewagen? We've had one in our family for 35 years, absolutely bomb proof, why do you think they were military vehicles?
Ancient Aussie proverb say "If you want to explore the outback, drive a Land Rover. If you want to come back again, drive a Toyota".
These days replace Toyo with Mitsubishi. Cheers
Exactly. This is actually the slogan of the International Dull Men's Club.
I'll side with Ronnie Dahl and my own 4 decades of experience but I think Mitsubishi and the old Nissan Patrols are all fine vehicles too. But I'll stick with what's worked for me. I have owned 2 (old) defenders in my time too. Including a 300Tdi 90 which I loved. But the Toyotas I have (and they're all old ones, not current models!) are absolutely bombproof.
@typhoon-7 agreed the old ones are great mate. I wouldn't be inclined to go with a new Toyota. Cheers
Here is the Rockies in the US you only find Toyota's on the side of the trails!
The 110 and 130 have exactly the same wheelbase, so the 110 is not the ' mid wheelbase' option. The 130 just has a longer rear overhang.
Is that true? The old type Defenders was like this: 110 was 110, 130 was 127, 90 was 92. something. Wheelbase, yes. The new ones I do not know much about.
Yeah, and the 130 looks super weird with that long ass overhang

Land Cruiser is the best value being the cheapest (relatively) of these SUVs. And you don't lose much compared to the other and it has better capabilities than each of them in specific categories.

Not to mention the traction control on the Land Rover is meant to be rev'd and work out which wheel to provide power to as it doesn't have diff locks. So when the wheel spun and they stopped, they prevented it from doing it's wizardry
Which is why diff locks might be the better option 😉
@hummerltheOh I'd take diff locks over fancy elections and sensors any day!
We may be able to help answer the question about the long-term reliability of the Grenadier after the trip we're currently on. It's a 5-year trip in a Grenadier across the world towing a Patriot X3, which we live in. We set off from London in mid-July 2023 with our two young kids and we’re approaching 50000km. At least 70% of our journey has been off-road...
Do you have a web-site ? How do you fare in the cold regions ? .....In Central Asia, above 3,000 m....we had Unimogs, or MAN 6x6 or Kamazes 6x6 , all with a cabin mounted........good luck , greetings
Sick! Best of luck to you and your fam
Well said guys, your trip is surely one of the longest roughest test of any. And fair play you chose the grenadier, yes it’s a little heavy but your trip will prove that the build quality and reliability comes from the all round stronger components .
Loving your expedition , what memories you’re making .
I hope Ineos are aware and detailing your journey .
Take care and keep making dreams come true .
@@ThisiscoolGAMES Thanks so much! Plenty more to come!
Commenting so I get an update after the 5 years
I’m a massive fan of Landcruisers, I’ve had 4, but to be fair to the Grenadier, the steering system is more agricultural because it’s tougher and more off road focused than all of the others, this means there will always be compromises on road, great test Gents.👍
When it comes to Land Rover product, you need to let the Terrain Response do the work. In every instance, when the wheel started to slip you let off the accelerator pedal. The trick is to stay in it a little longer, and the TR do it's job. It's an amazing bit of kit.
100%. He didn’t let it do its job
A have a friend who has a 45 year old Land Cruiser and he drives this thing every day well over 400000 miles on it with no problems whatsoever says he doesn’t need to buy a new one cause he feels his still has a long way to go probably pass it down to one of his kids
In Australia there are many "working" Landcruisers with well over 700k on them & zero reliability issues. In the outback , Land Rover owners are called thrill seekers....because they invariably end up having to use bush survival skills. 😂😂
Yea, with naturally aspirated V8, I don't think you are going to be able to do the same with that 4cyl
Old ones are good, but not new ones
I’ve got a 1995 80 series landcruiser with 606000kms on it about to take it away remote beach camping for 10 days with the family.
I’m also on my second 200 series. First was 2008 and sold it to a friend was has now done 450000kms on it and tows his big boat 2000km up north in west oz. Current 200 has 250000 is a 2017 with DPfs and drives like a new car.
What do you mean the new ones aren’t good?
It’s also worth more than I paid for it 4 years ago…
As many Ozzie’s have suggested in the comments section there is a reason we drive Toyotas. 👍🏼
@chad7580-t2l you mean 60k?
Quite satisfying seeing these "Chelsea Tractors" in their proper environment

The fans being turned off in wading mode in the Grenadier is not to stop water being pulled into the radiator. What would be the advantage of that?
The fan/s being stopped is to avoid a spinning fan hitting the water and bending/breaking and damaging the radiator.
Maybe do a little bit of research before reviews.
That's a weird error. A radiator is part of a closed loop, anyway.
100% These guys are clearly not seasoned off-roaders.
The fluid in the radiator is part of a closed loop, but the fans behind the radiator pull air across/through the radiator to exchange heat. @christiaanvisagie3530 is correct in their statement.
The first time I waded a truck I hit the water hard and the fan put a hole in the radiator... you only do it once or put some perforated metal between them... learnt the hard way with that one though...
It's mainly to stop water being thrown all over the electrics.
Nothing like a group of guys that don’t off road taking some vehicles off road…
It’s always fun to laugh at guys that don’t know what they are doing. And trying so hard to look the part in their stilly boots. Lol
I was thinking the same thing ha!
Agreed. Not to mention the whole crew plugging a tire and then deciding they were too scared to use it so they replaced it with the spare. Clowns!
In the States we do have the Land Cruiser, however we only have it with the turbo 4cyl hybrid version. We also get another version as the 4Runner. Same powertrain with an off-road specific Old Man Emu suspension front sway bar disconnect, rear locker and more ground clearance. It should do everything the Land Cruiser does with better off-road chops. I have a Trailhunter version on order to replace my current 5th gen 4Runner. Will be interesting to see how it compares to the others.

@@salvi1398 i live in the US so thats not happenin’. Lol
Um. Not really...
Would have speed and power all the way 😪
I am not sure if I should laugh or cry. If you pump the Defenders air suspension up then you take a lot the wheel articulation away. Surprise surprise. Grenadier doesn't have outdated steering, it has a solid front axle so it has the only steering you can have. Hence the reason the others have changed to independent front suspension.
Agree 100%. The Grenadier steering is a little vague on the road because it's built for off road (although you soon get used to it), something that these amateurs failed to point out during the 'off road' test.
My old K5 Blazer has a solid front axle, and it would run circles inside all of these (even though it has Auburn limited slip front, locking at rear) because you can not make a birfield joint that can handle the same turning degrees as Blazer:s joints. Here in Finland we call independent front suspension "risukeula" , "a front suspension made of twigs". It is easier to make car like handling 4x4 with independent suspension, my H3 has it, but the downside is the mechanical flimsiness of driveshafts compared to real axle. Original HUMVEE had independent suspension both ends, partly because of needed longitudinal ground clearance, partly because of interchangeability of front and rear suspension components. But it is not comfy...
The presenters are halfwits
I just amazed the land rover didn't break down
@@briancrossley1710 Absolutely right. The same goes for the Jeep Wrangler. Also, you won't break a hand or finger when off road because the steering wheel doesn't turn sharply. It is smoother off road and you get used to it and don't even notice the vagueness on pavement.

driver issue bro🤡
The Defender driver is the better offroader, the other one is an amateur, but it was still his fault for not spotting right, although it looks like the Defenders wheelbase is much longer so thats probably the issue
Exactly its driver issue, i have seen Defender doing more tough obstacles easily
Yes, but they're right, the Defender is the weakest off-road vehicle.
And that's without talking about durability...
Great test, my money would be spent on the Toyota.
That's what Toyota was hoping you would say...After they became the primary sponsor.
@@shaunmurray8132 There's a reason why Landcruisers outsell the others. I went to Africa and they were everywhere and in fact, the LC200 was more of a status symbol than the Range Rover.

@@blazzz13 yea but my point is, that was more of an ad than a 'review'...the way everything was setup throughout made it eye-rollingly obvious.
@blazzz13 a reason toyota sell more because there are less people that can afford the other 3. If all four are the same price, I don't think toyota will be the best seller.
It's funny because other new Defender 110s (factory spec) have managed the bomb hole without touching anything.
The dude driving had no clue, made it worse
Why does everybody refuse to put the cars in the same tires when they test them??
The tire is the single most important factor when driving offroad.
Having one car on street tires and another one on Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs makes the comparison basically worthless
Probably because these are press cars which they don't own and can't mess with
I think there’s also an element of wanting to demonstrate these vehicles’ “out of the box” off road capability.
Good point
Because they are testing what comes from factory. If one manufacturer comes with better tyres than another, then that is not their fault. If you want to buy your own tyres for your own vehicle then fine.
@@vanderz1012 Some companies give out more off-roady tires because some rich customers like that look even tho they won't ride on anything but asphalt. While other more reasonable companies employ sensible tires that will have better asphalt performance, knowing most of these vehicles won't be used in off roading anyway... If you are a "Off Roader", you'll have the money to switch to the required tires. Off Roading is an expensive hobby to begin with...
So when a "Performance Comparison" is being done, unless you include the same tires and review their road fuel economy, sound inside the car, ride comfort and speed performance too; it doesn't really make much sense to keep factory tires imo.
I have done The Whipsaw Trail with my 2020 Defender 110 and had no issues on any trail. Pretty much it made the trail easy. Driver needs more confidence behind the off road wheel.
Which direction? Also, the issue with the Defender is independent suspension mixed with air. When you jack it up there is no flex. That is always gonna be an issue. I also worry about LR electronics. Personally would not take one down Whipsaw out of fear that it would need a tow out. Toyota will always get you in, and out.
@@Jordan-ql8pv I just love when people claim that a certain car “will ALWAYS get you in and out” - do you even have a drivers license - or are you just re-circulating “facts from the internet”?
@scandinavia6271 personal experiences, and I own a yota
@@scandinavia6271 Come to Australia, and you will see why LR's are not used off road anymore. Toyota's rule for a reason. I met a couple that had to pay $10,000 to recover their LR when the axle snapped.
The Whipsaw trail isn't difficult by no means as long as you don't have street tires and engage 4x4 once or twice. The whole trail is an entry level forest service type road that has some optional obstacles, and popularized on youtube because its off a major highway. For any serious offroad obstacles all you you need 2" lift and high clearance bumper otherwise you will rip off your plastic bumpers. The rest of the "trinkets" in this video have no impact on off roading capability.
Think the hosts need to look into tech details before recording.
yeah cringe stuff from such a big channel
In the INEOS you can engage all diff locks on the move (it's actually better!). Only low range requires to be in neutral like most other 4wd.
Yes, and drive upto 40 mph if you select low range . I don’t think any other 4x4 offers that
and Grenadier allows all 8 gears in low range... rest do not.
There is so much about the off road capability of the Grenadier that these guys failed to mention during this 'serious off road test, not sure they even knew about most of it.
With the Defender, why did you not use the cameras that give you clear visibility underneath to see where obstructions are so you can navigate? Why was this information hidden from the review. I went on an off road course in the Defender and this function was the most important and most used option which resulted in a flawless navigation of extreme conditions. This was a set up to try and get the Defender to fail and I'm sorry but the bald guy has only ever driven over a kerb before by the standards of his driving.
he cant drive 🤦
You saw exactly what they were trying to do.. i agree with you...
They’re both bold. Tom Ford is getting cringier by the year.
Had the same impression, they were pushing for Land Cruiser a bit too much and just slating the Defender..
Journalism these days eh..
The Defender had the best clearance yet the driver behind its wheel looked like someone who got his driver’s licence no more than 6 months ago, with no offroad experience at all.
The new defender is on air suspension, it should have super extended mode which raises the vehicle even further when it detects it's bottomed out. It has been around since the disco 3. They need to do their research
Exactly my thoughts. And also you can trust the Defender to pull through obstacles. The forward and backward at the bumhole was only a problem, because they do not seem to have offroad experience (at least with the Defender). Try a driver training from Land Rover beforehand and you will learn to trust that car. I don't own a Defender, but I had trainings on the old and the new ones.
right
@@renes.6105 agreed. defender is the best and the most practical offroader plus daily driver
The problem with Defender in its high suspension setting is that there is no more downward travel for any wheel. It performs much better in standard ride height but that means that it would ground in the middle, have a worse break over angle and wouldn’t get over the top of that hole anyway.
Many people don't know, but when the defender detects that the ground clearance is lower, they can activate height mode 2 by pressing the lift button again.
Maybe something in the middle would be a good compromise?
Normally when it’s jacked up so high and on an incline where the diagonal wheels are in the air, it takes off a bit of pressure from the tires pushing on the ground and sends it to the ones in the air to try and push them towards the ground while bringing the car lower to the ground. But it’s not very effective like hydraulic suspension on Toyotas. This one though doesn’t have it
If low range is selected this changes the articulation.
Never compare with G wagon
Clearly off-road driving is not their forte, but in many ways that made this episode more interesting. Good fun Gents
I know they are not really comparable price wise, but I really like the G-Class and the Land Cruiser. The Defender looks great but I simply don´t trust it and the Granadier is too focused on off road for daily use.
I’ve driven the Grenedier on road and these guys are being so dramatic. You get used to the steering very quickly and it’s actually pretty comfortable on road.
the guy who envisioned making the Grenadier explicity said that was the reason he did it. That the Defender became more of a soft-roader and he wanted something that was focused on off road capability and durability like the old Defenders were. He tried to buy the production tooling from JLR and they turned him down. sorry to repeat a wiki article but it does seem he was proven right. I don't think the Defender is a lost cause, it has it's purpose it just isn't what the Defender used to be.

Can’t wait to see the comments sections on the Grenadier a few more years down the road. The more we share about how damn indestructible the mechanicals are in these vehicles, the more I tend to believe our Grenadiers will be just fine being hammered on off-road for a good 10 years and always get us home. After a few years of experience and learning after delivering such a spectacularly capable first model launch, I’m quite confident the Grenadier with fully dominate its class in most any off-road head to head of off the showroom floor review. Will always adore my Toyota FJ’s that I have had a 45 year relationship with. But component for component, I am absolutely amazed that someone has actually introduced an off-road focused vehicle out of a brand new company that is literally robust enough to go into military duty conditions right off the showroom floor. Yes, the underside of that vehicle is genuinely THAT robust.

Plus the BMW inline 6 is a great motor
If you want to go into the outback take a Landrover, If you want to come back out take a Toyota. 2009-2010 parts of Aberdeenshire had snow without a break for 5 months, my Toyota started outside at -24°C, pushed through 2ft of drifting snow for mile upon mile and never felt like I was out of my or its depth. At 7 years old it threw a piston and Toyota stepped up and replaced the engine, I paid labour. If I'd kept up dealer servicing they were prepared to pay the whole jing-bang. No other manufacturer would offer that level of support and acknowledge it was their fault for a bi-metallic corrosion issue with the c.h gasket. Landrover...my split new S1 Freeloader threw a piston at 3,000 miles/2 months old and Landie had the audacity to charge for engine oil in the repaired car.

And parking half on the kerb…..ooooh. hard choice !
The only thing missing on all models tested, is that "option"...that makes the cars very cappable in offroad... it's "seated" between the steering wheel and driver seat...
Unfortunately non of the cars has it in this video...
The test is nice, ok. Not particularly hard but ok.
The problem I see in this review is that it’s done from the on roader perspective.
The same drive with off road driver would bring for sure different result but most likely different conclusions.
From a off-roader perspective:
the defender is a family suv with good off-road capabilities and made for drivers that are not interested in off-roading but in having a car that will bring their family to whatever lost medieval church during the summer holidays.
The G-class is as always an excellent off-roader but extremely expensive to buy, with super fancy and delicate interior that breaks the heart & wallet if you scratch it.
The LC250 is family off-road car that has an excellent balance between on/offroad & value x money, with not crazy mods it can become an excellent off-road machine
The Grenadier is the pure realization of what an adventure off-road machine is. And it’s not just because the capabilities but because it’s pure driver’s skills focused. Yes, it’s not fast and nimble on road, but the off-roaders look for another things, and the Grenadier brings exactly what the off-roaders like and miss from the others.
You’ll never find a more divided group than car enthusiasts and I love it lmao. And these overlanders are sick!
Great video. Makes my choice in buying the LC250 so very justified. I considered the Defender but it didn't feel quite right. The Ineos would have been hated thoroughly by my wife with all the levers and switches. The LC250 has been so much fun taking it on all our family adventures.
Congrats! Did you also consider the GX550? Common question many have.
@ I did but at the time of purchase Lexus dealers were marking up like crazy.
It was all good until the end - you did the rock crawling the wrong way.
The way you did it the low range was complete overkill you could do it on neutral and someone push it - the right way is uphill! Then you test ti, so go back do it right!
I find this whole thing a bit ridiculous. Saying the G is less good an offroad since it is to expensive and preferring the Toyota because of that reason while nobody will buy that Toyota new for serious off-roading since it is to expensive and the old stuff is way better.
The G was a good of road. As a military vehicle early in the 1980s and it is better than any GB product but the new G they are all over powered and heavy lux tractors for the stock market guy. Toyota still rule the dirt water stone and sand. Yeah... I have the Merc X5 and a Yaris. The Japanese are my favorite.
The best 4x4 of road in the world are the Volvo Feltvagn (Field Wagon) military.

Toyota traction control is out of this world. It allows you to increase power in such an incremental manner that you never lose traction. It feels so refined and effective instead of muscling your way out of a difficult section.
Every SUV has a round headlight!
Many of then originated from the Willis Jeep, the Land Cruiser for example but only the first edition, the normal Land Cruiser has rectangular headlights and looks much cooler imo
When you test range rover make sure to bring a land cruiser to tow it and bring it back 😂
If this is the future of motoring journalism, I want out
Considering Ineos don’t have any vehicular heritage in this sector, the Grenadier is pretty damn good.
The build quality of my Grenadier is impressive, well it did come from Magna Steyr and a former Mercedes factory after all.
Had two Defenders; first returned under warranty due to multiple faults that couldn’t be fixed (though the dealer put it back on the forecourt barely a week later at more than I paid for it) and the second sold back to the dealer for what I paid for it as it also had numerous faults. Wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole.

In order to make these tests, truly comparable. You should run the exact same model tires across all of the vehicles. When it comes to offloading tires, make the biggest difference almost more than anything else.
No suprise for G`s off road performance. It asctually IS a military car - I drove it few generations back in the Slovenian army under the PUCH badge. Sure they dressed it up now as posh off-roader and the price is sky high, but the original DNA is still there and then some. It also shamed Hummers we got as part of NATO alliance, so yes the G is a posh Tank
"You're good" (ground clearance) scrap. The worse spotter 😂
It doesn't look to me like the defender staggled with the Bamhole exit. I think the driver was just a bit too careful. It touched down just like the toyota did, a little power should have taken it forward and out. Rather than reversing back and then trying again and then again. Not the defender's fault in my opinion.
Guys u need to waffle less it’s too boring
Correct, I’m giving up watching……nothing interesting happening here…

The best way to get through this video is by skipping most of it
@@jamessquair6829 better by reading comments.
@@jilokizito1705 yep, I'm reading all the comments (that know more about the cars than these guys) whilst they're waffling rubbish in the background.
I love that these kind of videos are being made but if you don't put the same tires on all the vehicles it really is a pointless comparison.
This was the comparison test I was waiting for: Land Cruiser vs Defender vs G-Class vs Grenadier, awesome video. I was surprised to see how good the G-Class is offroad, but the clear winner is the Land Cruiser (would love short wheel version of it )
Tom and Ollie, you two are the best ;)
But you missed one contender the Suzuki Jimny :D
I love the way the Chief Test Driver emphasised on "Bomb Hole!" twice, just so no one gets the wrong idea! 4:13 - 4:15🤣🤣🤣
2.8 engine on the LC250 is too weak. 3.3 diesel on the 300 series is a dream.
This is more a driver test than a vehicle test, its in whose hands the car is it seems!🚙
love this battle and these cars are made for these territory🔥🔥

@mattmorris2867 Thanks man
Toyota has become a cool brand, people who drive a Land Cruiser have their shit together. And they keep them for years and years.
👌
I recently drove US models of the 2024 G-Wagen (petrol V8 version) and the 2024 Defender 110 (petrol 6-cylinder version). I need a new vehicle and really wanted to like them. They were both…OK. It may sound crazy, but I still prefer my 2007 100 Series Land Cruiser (with 270K miles). The size is perfect (the G-Wagen felt cramped, the Defender too long and with poor outward visibility), the engine is quiet, bulletproof and buttery smooth, the body (after all those miles) has no squeaks or rattles…and it has a tailgate, an item that I cannot do without. And none of those complicated electronic doodads (apart from air suspension, which has been reliable so far) that add needless complexity.
New LC will be sitting duck
Bomb Hole was a driver issue for sure. Oliver is not made for off-road. Also, a PHEV Defender is the worst choice, why would you want extra weight? Land Cruiser is definitely the winner here, but it was unfair for Defender with locked suspension and not suitable driver, Oliver is great for track cars. I reckon among those 4 Grenadier owners are most likely to take it off roading with G-Class the least.
Yes aside from friends with Jeeps, most of my Grenadier mates bought the Grenadier specifically to take off road, amongst other daily driver needs.
G-class is used by german army for 40-50y, especially by the special forces, as the brits have their Rovers. Nothing in Germany is more offroad tested for decades. What You but as G-class is just a pimped up work horse, like the Unimog.
So the G Wagen did everything with absolute ease, but doesn’t win? G550 owner here. 😃 I owned a D-90 in the mid 90’s, before it became an SUV. Ran flawlessly over and through everything in the Colorado and Utah backcountry.
I guest the insanely high price of the G Wagon is what makes a Landcruiser a lot more attractive and less heartbraking when off-road scar start to appear.
@@christt6809 the gwagen has always been overpriced and and not that good from factory! they pushed it too much to bee a luxury item! even the professional models with solid axles and much less luxury inside are even more expensive i dont get why!
Its the cost, you can buy 2 LC's for the cost of a G.
Merc need to offer a basic model like they used to in the 80's without all the glitter and look at me exhausts., its a brilliant vehicle but has become too footballer.
In terms of reliability most of cars are same in corresponding category but the thing is it that Toyota is easy to repair and cheap too.
I will definitely buy all four of them if my daily drive to my nearest 7/11 is like this terrain.
Very educational video 😊
Rear/centre/front Diff lock.
Approach Angles etc.
This video review was exceptional 👏🏿
Big ups to team!
The Grenadier is such a great car
It would have been better if you had stated some data about the vehicles (technical data, price) as text on the screen. I am watching from Turkey.
8:00 plenty of 110 have got through bombhole. Powerful UK for one
When I saw Westlin Diesel in his Gwagon I am team Gwagon. Epic enginering at its finest.
Sheesh, the production value is next level and the presenters - well presented. This was extremely enjoyable!
Trying desperately to say nice things about the Defender... its hilarous... it nice on-road....dropping the kids off at the pool 🤣
It’s a Prado!
In Australia. Not USA and UK
A couple of comments:
1) You don’t explain what drivetrains are involved. The Defender is the HYBRID which almost no one takes off road. Lack of low range refinement has something to do with just that. In my opinion “EV mode” is not suitable for off roading.
2) You need to show all the vehicles going through the same tests. You just claim that “xx didn’t struggle” - even though the Grenadier clearly touched the ground during rock crawl. There is actually a video on “4x4 Wales” showing the Defender going up the EXACT same climb on this trail (“the bomb hole”) without any problems at all. I will like to see the lines picked by the driver, throttle input, etc.
3) It seems a bit like you already decided for the winner (Toyota) and the one not to win (Defender HYBRID) - this is the narrative through the video. You were being “very nice” to the Toyota. The 4x4 scenes are heavily edited - and you carefully pick which situations to show - to match your narrative. The accidental puncture of the Defender tire is an example of just that.
Who needs to drive their car at the ocean? They also did not talk a word about durability and build quality. The winner would have been…. Toyo again😅
@ That may be? Who knows? (I haven’t seen any reliable data showing this new Toyo Prado being more reliable than the G-wagon or the new Grenadier- maybe you have?)
@@Marvilalove sorry, but the LC250 ride quality is terrible
5500 miles in our Defender 1st week of ownership. FL to CO and back. We have F250s F150s 87 Grand Waggy LS4 86 CJ 7 now getting a 4bt and MD GLE AMG. We "discuss" who gets the Defender. There will always be Defender in our garage. They don't note if this 110 has Offroad 2. Kinda important for this test.
Ours is a 130 same color. P400.
Why anybody would put a hybrid in this test is baffling. The inline 6 is, well, an inline 6. Perfection. We got 26mpg calculated over the 5500. Here around town we're clocking 24.
Our discussions will likely be solved by a second Defender. The best explanation of Land Rover passion - LRTimes on RUclips. Christian and Vera are huge fun.
Man the G Wagon looks at home off-roading sad people only take them to the shops.
...because, if you take it off road, and dent door panel, you've got to re-mortgage your house to pay for repairs!
@@therealmrfishpaste If you can afford a G Wagon a dent in a panel is nothing.
Amazing video, thanks guys! Love to see real off-road tests and you guys certainly delivered 🎉🎉
The land cruiser had road tyres compared to the others!
Usain Bolt will beat college sprinters even when running in loafers.
@@donmac7780that ain’t happening bolt is 40 years old. He can’t beat college sprinters in spikes. Maybe 15 years ago
College sprinters can be pretty fast though so I bet he would get beaten
Yes they appeared to be standard AT's very similar tread to the Yoko GO15 on my Prado.
Didn't stop the Toyota progess though, bags of low engine speed torque so it can go gently over obstacles at tickover revs = less damage and better progress.
You guys act like a small kids. Why do you need to give a push to the LR? You shouldn't even stand behind it
A view from the UK. Can you tell me why on the following questions.
1, a recirculating ball steering system is 'outdated' bearing in mind it is designed for OFFROAD steering conditions. You know, to minimise shock to the steering wheel preventing you breaking your thumbs?
2, you emphasise 22mph on a 3lt engine, bearing in mind fuel economy is the last thing a buyer of this type of car worries about?
3, you emphasise the weight of the Ineos as if it's a problem. It is the only one with solid axles. You might have missed it but they weigh more, or the Defender does NOT have a chassis?
4, is a larger turning circle "rubbish" when i'm on the farm. Do you think the designers used the 'lucky dip' method of design?
5, Why do you use the word "Agricultural" pejoratively? That's what they will be used for and NO, it does not "REALLY" suffer doing normal road stuff".
6, "You can't do things on the fly", PERLEESE! Do you really know what you are looking at? IT'S A TRUE OFFROADER, ANYTHING monocoque IS NOT A TRUE OFFROADER, so Land Rover is out.
Yet again, i see another presenter biased production trying and failing to keep their personal preferences to themselves. As for as "on road manners" are concerned to many of us offroaders they are only primarily important to those wanting a 'Chelsea Tractor' who's definition of going 'offroad' is bumping up the kerb. IT IS DESIGNED FOR OFFROAD USE, NOT LIKE THE OTHER 3. Try to be more objective next time. You suffer the same as other so called 'Reviewers' and that is you've still got your arse in a BMW 5 series 3lt when reviewing offroaders. You're playing boys and toys.
Oh well Rob, still looking for the grownups in the room.
Why are you against gays? :)
Steering bump stops are set highly conservatively for protection from articulation when front is locked. You can adjust spacer nut or swap entirely with a pair of washers and turning radius will improve by around 2m. None of these presenters seem to have ever wrenched on a vehicle, or tuned to purpose beyond factory settings. Love my Grennie! It's an impressive Freshman offering with superb build quality. An early adopter special for sure. But great to have as an option.
@@BryanPike Forgive me if i am wrong but i think you have misunderstood my comment. When you drive offroad there are occasions where your front wheels will go over a terrain and land with forces put on them that violently want to change the direction the steering or front wheels want to point and likely jar up to the steering wheel. In a road car is will not happen unless you hit the kerb at an angle. As this scenario is more likely to occur offroad the mechanics to steer the wheels has to compensate or minimise this from happening. This is the reason that true offroad designers put a lot of effort into this area. BTW., one of the reasons why these muppets refer to 'no feel' or 'no responsive feedback to the steering wheel' is because of the steering damper or shock absorber built into it which people like these 2 likely lads would change to a softer damper which would compromise the steering offroad.
I'm taking the Ineos. Solid axles front and rear give it the best off-road ability.
Thw Grenadier is a budget G wagon... same Magna Steyr roots.
These aren't even in the same $$$ point, Grenadier all the way. 100%
Love seeing more long-form tests like this!
