Just seems that JLR are targeting the same end of the market with all their products. Surely they have the luxury off-road covered with Range Rover. That leaves Land Rover to cover the workhorse end of the market. And if there isn't one then they didn't need a new vehicle otherwise they are going to cannibalise their own sales.
Nobody is going to buy a Land Rover as a workhorse anyway, this Defender has the same appeal Range Rovers had in the 90s - a "comfortable, rugged farm vehicle" which is still appealing to rich people
In the last few years of prior defender sales they were barely scraping 3 digits, they did that in hours in my local dealership with the new model during a pandemic, it’s what will sell.
You sound like you make sense. But I disagree. You miss they are going where the vast majority of the money is, using the defender brand to bring in extra sales. They never "lose" sales, just some switching - with extra sales from elsewhere in the key selling market segment.
@@andrewnorris5415 That's the question isn't it - where do the sales come from? If it's buyers who would not otherwise be attracted and they make more money overall using this strategy then at least in the short term it is the best they can do.

But the way amortisation works in a business (the practice of spreading an intangible asset's cost over that asset's useful life), if the car is really capable (which I think it is from videos I've seen) and lasts for 30 years, then surely it's a really great investment for a farm, even at £81k? The worry is will it last 30 years with all those electrics to go wrong? Also, in truth, to use as a farm run-around workhorse, wouldn't you likely choose a lower spec model, closer to £50k?

Thanks for the Land Rover detail, will stick with my 10 year old Discovery me thinks. It pulls the caravan, livestock and plant trailer, plus does the school run and has 7 leather seats. All the very best for 2021.
Disco 4 was a great bit of industrial design, as it was so fit for purpose. Leather seats is an odd one, I've always rated them in regularly used vehicles, like the Disco, RR, etc. as they're easy to keep clean and don't tear or collect dust. Yet most people see them as a luxury item when they're not, especially when fitted in working vehicles..
@@harrysfarmvids totally agree. I also chose leather because of superior wear and tear over time. I think LR really have put out a great vehicle that is minimalist and functional yet a very nice environment to be in . You really do get the best of both worlds . And wants wrong with that ?
Floods, hitting the bridge at full force lol. That must of been a massive engineering project. It's a creek trickling down stream to a tiny little foot bridge built too low.
Harry, I think you've passed up a terrific opportunity here. Land Rover would love it if you turned the new Defender in and told them "....it pulls the plow better than my John Deere." I haven't seen that test of the Defender on anyone else's channel. Happy New Year everyone! Looking forward to more great episodes of Harry's Farm and Harry's Garage!
Yes, ref. Defender you’re focusing on points others aren’t talking about. I’ve got a working Defender TDCI and keen to justify the new model but shocked at the high costs for a muddy tool! To me it’s so sad that the high price makes it an elitist purchase, closely aligned to the LR SUV’s such as Sport! Then there the part canvas seats which yes are an absolute disaster. Glad you’ve pointed out flaws in the 90. Thanks.
Excellent and informative as always. The pricing of the Defender was curious when they first came out and the sudden changing of engines for MY21 has added to the confusion. You can’t help comparing to a Discovery Commercial - which has the 6 pot diesel and even well specc’d comes in way under the 110 Defender - and I believe they’re much the same chassis and air suspension. Yes the Defender has some nice practicality features as well as some silly form over function items such as that side mounted useless stowage bin (part of an unnecessary option pack fortunately) but many of my farmer friends are eschewing the Defender in favour of a Discovery, which does seem to make sense.
You’ll possibly end up more obsessed with this channel than the garage. The video output is less here, so you’re always chomping at the bit for a new farm video.
Will that Land Rover still be running reliably and economically when it's 40 years old? I very much doubt it, you'll not keep that running with a hammer a few spanners and some baler twine like the older ones. Over priced, over complicated junk for a utility vehicle, I doubt you'll see many as farm vehicles.
"Will that Land Rover still be running reliably and economically when it's 40 years old?" Of course it will. It'll have had 60 new engines, 40 complete rewires, 10 new bodies and five replacement transmissions - and maybe a new handle. But it'll still be the same old LR !
100% Landrover has lost the plot can just imagine when this vehicle went back to the dealership and they looked inside and said oh no Harry has got it all dirty.
It looks great in that solid blue with white roof. Reminds me of the farmer spec Defender Counties that were everywhere before the craze of the pickup truck took hold.
Good review. Very insightful. My only concerns are price and reliability. I guess I’m not the target market. Good to listen to a farm manager who knows his business!

@@robertcook2572 well they're moving further away if they're blowing a load of r&d on a new product line they never intended to improve sales or move into new markets! That's idiotic folly. You can get a decent tractor for £80k, a new defender cost £20k in 2007.
Maybe the Defender needs a specification reset. Buy the “Farmer” version with plastic floors and full leather seats plus all the off toad terrain technology and an “Urban” spec’ with the luxury of a Discovery 5 in a better looking package and still with the off road capability. At £81,000, that looks a lot for an SE?? 😄
Don't they sell it like that in America? Buy an automatic with not that many luxury things but great offroading spec for 40-45k USD. buy a luxury one for 55-65k. But looking at this I don't know why any farmer would buy any defender regardless of the price(new) instead of a Hilux or something like that.

For those outside UK, a "farm" is where wealthy English people retreat to get space and quiet from the over-crowded urban areas where vast majority of plebs live on top of one another in tiny spaces. Also occasionally where food is grown with help of tax payer money

The big towing eyes are on the wrong end, they should be on the front for when it breaks down and the box on the side is for the picnic when it breaks down
Another really good vid. I think the price is a bit of a red herring for two reasons - firstly, these can be bought for under £50k with a Diesel engine and even the base spec is pretty good, secondly, have you seen the price of old Defenders on the second hand market? Good conditon/late models are similar price to the new one.
What put it on a stock farm it would last less than a week. The rear space looks to get smaller as you get to the boot the door to get in to the boot is to small to get bales in. If you had to put dead stock in the back there juices would leek out and soak into them folded down rear seats and as for under the front rubber mat being plastic it's drops down below the sides so 2 inc full of mud an shite wash it out an you've got a pond. You look where you are driving not at some computer in the center consol that will tell you how deep the water is. To many gadgets an electronics that will go wrong. This is no stock farmers truck..

It's the new defender we are on about is it not. Have a few proper land rovers in retirement now but the work horse that has never failed is the 1996 hilux still hard at it. An I did never say it was awful. Although I do know it is not any good for use on a stock farm as it is no work truck just another gimmick trying to cash in on the past history of its long gone for farther . When I was younger if you had cut me in half it would of said land Rover now its Hi lux the old ones with out the electronics are just ultra reliable just keep going. .
Two turbos and a supercharger! The concept of 'KISS' well and truly lost in the West Midlands. Give it 5 years and see if this continues the LR tradition of propping up reliability tables.
Wouldn't want to be in the middle of nowhere and this went wrong. Beauty of old car is that it was basic, tougher than old boots and could be repaired in the middle of the jungle by the 'untrained' mechanic.
My ideal spec with the 3 litre diesel came in just below that which is less that 10 grand more than a well spec’d hilux, Amarok, wrangler or fairly closely matched to the cost of a grenadier, price isn’t the issue, it’s just for a different market, every farmer I know has an l200, they bought for £1200 and it lasts 100,000 miles of towing until a defender is down to that price it’s not a viable work truck
Yes if you go for a D200 or D250. The D300 version which Harry mentions, in HSE spec to avoid partial cloth seats, comes in at £64,780. By the time you add a rear locking diff and a couple of extras, it’s easy to get to £70k.
@@andrewhurstcars the 3 litre is the new base model, 200bhp and near 400ftlbs of torque, which is what people will want for the sake of reliability because it’s not over worked, it has more grunt than all its competitors, and the diff lock comes with the tow pack which is a few grand and probably one of the only packs it needs
You’ve got your money’s worth out of the project 8 tyres 😀. Really practical, I actually fancy one of these as the do it all family wagon, not sure the cream interior is a great choice if it is going to come into contact with dirt. All it’s missing is an under water radar like a boat so you can see obstacles or fish 🐠

@@harrysfarmvids For us it has replaced a 7.5 ton livestock lorry and a Tata pick up!!
Yeah that was my thoughts too..
@@stephenauty3370 I'd like to see him drive 20 tons of tractor & trailer across it.

@@PhilbyFavourites Well it'll be a public footpath so it is the responsibility of the Council , lovely water , just not enough for a trout farm
@@PhilbyFavourites I'd guess that the council was only maintaining a footpath across his property. Things councils do are not necessarily correct !
Can’t wait to see the Ineos Grenadier, hopefully its what the defender should have been. It will have the reliable 3.0d BMW straight 6 diesel
Itll also be too expensive
Very informative on Defender gadgets. Nice. And also on farming. Both elements highly informative. Good job Mr M.
Thanks.
great videos as usual, Harry... keep 'em coming!!!
Be interesting to see how different the commercial versions will be to the normal ones.
Its only half a bridge, when does the council come back & build the rest?
Bridleway specification I should imagine.
That’s what I was going to say.. thanks council.. um where’s the other half.. I guess you’ll have to do a run up to squeeze the Land Rover through 🤣
Cheers Harry for the video I aways enjoy your point of view. Also Happy New Year to you and yours. "2020 keeps on giving" so true, great quote.
Took me 14 minutes to realize this isn't Harry's Garage, and that Harry has a farm channel.
You’ll possibly end up more obsessed with this channel than the garage. The video output is less here, so you’re always chomping at the bit for a new farm video.
Yes, I think that Harry is first and foremost a farmer who has a keen interest in cars.
I didn't realise until I read your comment. lol
the car may be wrong but the review is 100% right. Nice review despite of the awkward situation given to review. Excellent Job!
3.28 Harry really doesn’t like that middle bin 😂
Took a while ! 🤣😂
what a wonderful review. I don't look at farming stuff or anything but this video was really good and enjoyable to watch.
Thank you Harry, happy New Year to you, "keep em coming" and best wishes.
That bridge doesn’t look like it’ll last a year compared to the sleepers that were in before.
And its too narrow for a vehicle, no way to enter the field with one now
Well, there are more beautiful cars in Harry's garage. Thanks God. Always interesting, these episodes. Thanks, Harry.
Well it just has to last until 2030 or until land rover does an electric version or something.
It won't even last 4 years, judging by their past units.
@@nate8088 ye but the new defender is a brand new car built in a brand new factory so issues are expected until they sort them out.
@@beaviccoon470 So, you're saying it's going to be even MORE unreliable than the already famous-for-being-unreliable ones? That's downright scary.
"Will that Land Rover still be running reliably and economically when it's 40 years old?"
Of course it will. It'll have had 60 new engines, 40 complete rewires, 10 new bodies and five replacement transmissions - and maybe a new handle. But it'll still be the same old LR !
Nice to see clear stream ,no soil runoff

Excellent video thank you, very good honest review of the new Defender. It is very different than the old one and £80,000+ is over priced.
Eighty-one grand! Sweet mercy. NUTS
Well done for getting Harrys farm on trending! 👍
I had no idea but thanks for pointing it out! Remarkable..
@@harrysfarmvids It's remarkable given the Farm channel has under 50k subs! A significant achievement for the Channel, onwards and upwards 🥂
Good review. Very insightful. My only concerns are price and reliability. I guess I’m not the target market. Good to listen to a farm manager who knows his business!
Can't be as good as the last defender..... ultimate test, crash it off road and fix it at home
Happy New year to you and yours thanks for the entertaining and the information videos you have provided for us looking forward to seeing you again soon
Sorry but this isn’t a Defender, they have completely lost the point of what the defender or Land rovers of old were!
The world moves on. Pick-ups do that old job, now. Land Rover lost that market thirty-odd years ago.
@@robertcook2572 surely this was the opportunity to pinch back a slice of that market rather than a slice of Disco and Range Rover sales? This chap summed it up, might swap.his Range Rover for one...
LR seems locked into the luxury market. They've lost the ability to make a cheap hack.
@@eatmycomments JLR simply isn't big enough. It hasn't the economies of scale available to the Japanese that would allow it to sell pick-ups at competitive prices and still make a profit.
@@robertcook2572 well they're moving further away if they're blowing a load of r&d on a new product line they never intended to improve sales or move into new markets! That's idiotic folly. You can get a decent tractor for £80k, a new defender cost £20k in 2007.
Excellent video Harry
Maybe the Defender needs a specification reset. Buy the “Farmer” version with plastic floors and full leather seats plus all the off toad terrain technology and an “Urban” spec’ with the luxury of a Discovery 5 in a better looking package and still with the off road capability. At £81,000, that looks a lot for an SE?? 😄
Don't they sell it like that in America? Buy an automatic with not that many luxury things but great offroading spec for 40-45k USD. buy a luxury one for 55-65k.
But looking at this I don't know why any farmer would buy any defender regardless of the price(new) instead of a Hilux or something like that.
you buckled the belt before you get in that shows you r a clever man I always do that first time seeing someone else done it thank you
The big question is... will ineos grenadier be a real replacement for the defender and will Harry review it when it eventually comes to market?
again no it will not. if you want something that looks like a defender than go buy the best defender you can find or even the ivico massive.
the grenadier is for people who like to show off that's all.
@@4WDIESEL1 "the grenadier is for people who like to show off that's all." A.little bit premature of you to say that considering it's not even come to market yet. That could only a valid argument once the buying market has been proven and sales have been made.

Oh. Why does the new council bridge not match the gate for width? You'll not get a vehicle across that!
Because the bridge is just for the bridleway.

That roof is great for lamping!
Not too sure Lamping is so popular in Chelsea or on the school run though which where most of these vehicles will be seen...good sale point though for LR
I did see in one episode a hare loping across a field so shooting must be possible.
😂😂 The city slickers won't have a clue what lamping is 🤣🤣👍
Yeah , £188 per hectare.
Increddible video. Thank you, Harry.
Exactly what I wanted to know. Even the anoying trailer testing lights.
In my opinion all the switches, electronics and touch screens are far too delicate to operate. You need something to be chuncky so it can be operated with thick gloves on.

For those outside UK, a "farm" is where wealthy English people retreat to get space and quiet from the over-crowded urban areas where vast majority of plebs live on top of one another in tiny spaces. Also occasionally where food is grown with help of tax payer money
No farmer would buy the new defender this guy is just a ponce

Another really good vid. I think the price is a bit of a red herring for two reasons - firstly, these can be bought for under £50k with a Diesel engine and even the base spec is pretty good, secondly, have you seen the price of old Defenders on the second hand market? Good conditon/late models are similar price to the new one.
great vid you cant beat country living lovely
Really good seeing a defender from a farming perspective!
@@stickyboots2679 while I get what you are saying, you clearly have not tried or used the defender. I don't like the new one don't get me wrong however I'm very aware that I can't say it's aweful when I have never driven it.
@@stickyboots2679 and as for leaking into the seats they are leather so it won't soak in. On the other hand it's way too expensive 😂
No never been in one an never will.. Prohaps if Tata made one some thing like them old wooden cabbed lorrys that are the work horse of India I would. Be a pain in the arse to clean up all down the sides of the leather seats it would get all infested in to that lovely stitching and all the mechanisms an the like. mind you the collies would of already put pay to the fancy interior. my friend..its just another 4x4 for the school run that isn't needed
When I was younger if you had cut me in half it would of said land Rover now its Hi lux the old ones with out the electronics are just ultra reliable just keep going. .
Way too complicated, and will go wrong ... I know some many people who's Disco Sports are constantly in the garage, so this thing has no chance
Got one - been in and out of the dealer's like a fiddler's elbow. Far too many dumb "design cues" and far too complex.
Two turbos and a supercharger! The concept of 'KISS' well and truly lost in the West Midlands. Give it 5 years and see if this continues the LR tradition of propping up reliability tables.
Yup, it's an iPhone on wheels. If it appears to have problems now, wait a few years and watch the electrics collapse.
Wouldn't want to be in the middle of nowhere and this went wrong. Beauty of old car is that it was basic, tougher than old boots and could be repaired in the middle of the jungle by the 'untrained' mechanic.
The Range Rover Sport is just a disco in disguise, same problems esp. the diesels.
Farm looking good Harry, the motor aint bad either...
A well specified 3.0 diesel comes in around 60,00 - still a lot but not stuoid
Kyle B yes not bad. I suspect the d250 will be the best seller, seems to have the best price/performance ratio.
@@kyleb5518 think the d200 3 litre diesel actually has 500nm of torque which is even better.
That is a car for people with more subsidies than sense
