  • In this summer episode of The Little Things, we go under de sea, cause it's better down where it's wetter. We take a look at Kenner's popular retro 1980s sea themed toy line, the Sea Wees mermaid dolls. Anywhere you look these days you see mermaid toys, especially in the summertime, but it was the Sea Wees that really started this trend and were one of the most popular girl toy lines of the early 1980s, pre-dating many of the other fantasy folk toylines and offering a great toy for the bath tub, pool, or to be hopelessly lost at the beach. You know it happened.

Wow -- Yet another thing lying forgotten, waiting to be excavated from memory. I laughed out loud too at the mention of "unholy gull/fish hybrid"😂 I really enjoyed this; thank you!

Sea Wees was one of those nearly "lost" toy lines that seems to have had a lot of influence on modern toys. I think of them whenever summer rolls around. I am glad it brought back some memories and thanks for watching!

I LOVE this video so much! Rewatching with nostalgic tears in my eyes. 🥲
Your presentation is perfect. Such awesomely researched details.
Sea Wees are my most favourite childhood toy (MLP’s sea ponies being a close second).
I long for a reissue of Sea Wees with even more accessories and variations. Alas it is unlikely to happen…
Sunny was my favourite but her gold paint oxidised to a green color.😢
Thank you for an emotional trip down memory lane.

In 1985 Kenner also made Sea Wees called Bubbles Ballet. I was a big fan of the Sea Wees but I had never heard or seen the ballet set as a kid. To my surprise I discovered them as an adult while researching Sea Wees on resale and fan sites many years ago.

Wow! I did not even know about the Bubbles Ballet! Thank you for telling me about this. I am going to look at these guys right now. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video! I love Sea Wees! My absolute favourites were the second and third waves. Their faces were the perfect balance of cute and pretty. Sadly the Shimmers’s faces were kind of off. Almost like they were on high alert.

High alert! That's very funny! They did look like that, didn't they. I think I thought of the Sea Wees as kind of the ocean equivalent to Strawberry Shortcake, in a way. We haven't received much feedback for the Seawees and it was one of the toy lines that brought back some of the best memories for us. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Lots of babies around without a male in sight! Some one is avoiding the child support payments!

HAHAHAHA! Keen observation, my friend. Are the males like salmon and die after spawning? You know what, I don't want to know. Thanks for the comment!

Maybe they are like deep sea angler fish and the male is absorbed by the female.
