- For those of you who love mermaids and/or grew up in the 1980's and/or the 1990's, here is a rare treat...the 1985 animated TV special, "Sweet Sea".
From the videotape description:
Deep beneath the waters of the Seven Seas, deeper than any submarine has ever been, there lies a magical place of enchantment called The Coral Kingdom. Ruled over by King and Queen Neptune, The Coral Kingdom is the playground for their beautiful daughter, SWEET SEA™, TOMY CORPORATION'S "splash" toy sensation.
In this charming animated adventure, SWEET SEA™ must protect her most prized possession, the Magic Amulet, from the evil Sheeba™. SWEET SEA'S most nortorious adversary, Sheeba™ is determined to become the next ruler of The Coral Kingdom.
SWEET SEA™ is a production of TMS Entertainment, Inc.

Typical of 1980's cartoons-as-commercials, this cartoon is basically a 22-minute-long commercial for the Sweet Sea doll from Tomy.
For a cartoon intended to sell us toys, this cartoon is really beautiful.

Despite a ton of 80s animated stuff being commercials for toys... god, the hand drawn animation is so beautiful and the music is so catchy! I'll still take it over modern stuff. Hehe.

Apparently the director of this OAV also directed the first episode of Rainbow Brite. Osamu Dezaki. He also directed Rose of Versailles, Golgo 13: Queen Bee, multiple Lupin the Third movies, Clannad and a crapload of other stuff. This man is a legend.
The anomation is actually so impressive. I would have loved it as a kid. Always loved ocean themed anything.
Honestly, same - if they didn't make toys, they should have. I can imagine some bath toys and polly pockets with these characters going incredibly hard

I had this on VHS when I was a kid, and watched it several times a day. I had completely forgotten about it, until I saw a pic on Instagram. Found this, and I can still recite this cartoon word for word, 30+ years later.

Is it weird that I have been avidly waiting for someone to upload this online for years now? My older cousin had this on video tape and I remember watching it when we were younger. There was virtually no proof of this existing online aside from a scant IMDB page and I know I didn't hallucinate the thing, so you've done a great service here, lol.

the goofy voice of the seahorse wtf.
(the initial vibes of the seahorse is that of a sleek cute elegant creature, so it turning out to be so silly is jarring)
I swear there were like 6 voice actors for all anime dubs back then. As soon as you said the voice was goofy, I knew exactly what it was going to sound like, and it did.

Ah, this was such unwatchable garbage, but i do like it. I feel like a downright auteur with my shitty webcomic when i compare it to this stuff
I had this on VHS when I was very little and watched it over and over and over, to the point where my parents groaned any time I grabbed the tape! After our player broke I was devastated and couldn't watch it, it never came out on DVD... But then after years of searching you put it up and I can finally watch it again! So many of my friends think it was a fever dream of mine lol, now I can prove that it was real! Thank you so much for putting it up!
This was one of my favorites when I was really little. I had the doll. I'm so glad to watch it again. My husband and I got a kick out of the 80's cheesiness. But we have to admit, it was animated really well. And we miss June Foray.

I remember my mom rented this for me when I was very very young, maybe 5 or 6 at most. I never forgot the cover art but couldn't remember the name of it. Every now and then I tried searching online to see if I could figure out what it was but I never got anywhere. Thank you for uploading this, it might sound stupid be knowing for sure what this was and even being able to watch it again as an adult really means a lot to me.
I was 3 years old when this movie came out. I grew up withit, but the last time I rented it, something had happened to the tape and part of the movie was missing. No one from school ever seemed to know what I was talking about when I asked if any of them remembered it. I've been looking for a copy ever since I graduated, just to prove I didn't dream it up. Clearly japan animators worked on this beautiful cartoon, there is so much of their anime style, 80's anime was so smooth and easy to recognize, but ofcourse 80's cartoons were beautiful too! they were so expresive smooth animated and those realistic sparkles
The Yamaha DX7 ROM-1A patch "Electric Piano 1" was heard in the intro of this special.

i'm literally only 16 but i have been waiting three to four years to find a VHS to play this on since i do have the very old VHS tape passed down from my grandma, but being able to finally finally watch it is so amazing, thank you so so much for taking the time to upload this!! my mom and grammy will be so happy to know that it's posted here and can watch it for the nostalgia!!!

I find it interesting that this was a dual USA-Japan production even though none have been made for Japan, and somewhat varies in animation from most Cartoon-as-Advertisements. Like, the production is actually quite fantastic, and had some sort of passion slapped onto it, rather than a low-budget animation to get the kiddies to buy the hottest new toy. Obviously the Sweet Sea dolls looks shit, but this animation really is interesting.
IIRC the Blinkins line also had a similar animation, and like this the the toys were awful and flopped.

Old comment, but I feel like they were allowed to put more effort into it since it was a one-off special instead of a full blown TV series.
I noticed a similar thing with another animated special from the 80s called "Barbie and the Rockers" where the animation was a lot more fluid than most TV shows at the time and had that anime aesthetic, only it was a plotless hour-long toy commercial.

I've seen so many of these one-shot toy tie-ins as an '80's kid, but somehow missed this one! I took screencaps. The backgrounds are fantastic.

Stuff like this makes me feel so bad for kids these days. Older cartoons were literally so comforting and sweet? Now all of them are so overstimulating or repetitive. The best they've got now is Bluey.. 😭 Best believe I'll be watching Sailor Moon, Rescue Heros, Strawberry Shortcake, you name it with my kids in the future.

The animation and everything is beautiful! One of the very rare instances they actually tried animating a merchandise character actually good! Can you imagine if Lady Lovelylocks, Care Bears, and so many others were actually animated based off the actual artwork like the books, that would of been beautiful!
You can than Japan for this though that’s why it looks so good! They seriously should of worked on those other cartoons too…

this looks vaguely familiar but then again i've seen a lot of 80s cartoons and animated shows that were either left over from my mom and her siblings having owned vhs tapes of weird cartoons or they were reruns on tv or i found some vhs tapes that i had my grandparents buy for me lol. apparat from stuff like glossy surfaces, shading and speed lines another way to know it is obviously animated in Japan is the way the shots are composed as if it was shot as a movie with a camera, at angles and perspectives when cartoons USA-made or whatever are regularly only fixed in 3/4th's view like a sitcom or a play.
