I started watching this video’s intro and actually burst into tears.... When I was younger, my grandma passed away, and my grandpa decided to sell my mother’s childhood home and move into a retirement community. I was young when the sale went through, but my most vivid memory is that it was sold to a pair of Egyptologists, and the woman had a beautiful severe black haircut. I was excited that they planned to not alter the house much because it was protected by the historical society. And when I saw this intro, I suddenly saw the living room where I spent so many Christmases when I was young, and had so many amazing memories. I felt so much nostalgic joy and heartache seeing this house again, and seeing how little it’s changed. Thank you for giving me a little sneak peek into a home that meant so, so much to me throughout the first half of my life. It’s so good to see that the house is being so cared for

i know what you mean! for me, it was the tv show "who do you think you are" they trace a celebrity's ancestry, and the historians tell them their findings and go into detail about their ancestors' lives. made me realize how important history class is (i always thought it was boring in school). on a side note, it also made me realize why it is so important to have a son (to carry on a family name). there was one episode, where they traced the lineage and found out she came from royalty. the daughter of king edward (can't remember which king edward) married a man, took on his last name, and by the time the family tree moved down several generations to the celebrity, the royal name was buried. such an amazing and important history in their family, and it disappeared, just because the female didn't get to carry on the name.
when she talked about her "husband john" at the beginning it seemed like she was talking about the dog, like the dog is her husband and also an egyptologist
@@RonJohn63 But how many people in the world are trained to read hieroglyphs as if they were reading a book? Only 5,000 to 10,000 in the world. It seems impressive, but compared to the world's current population, that's less than one percent. Small enough to still be impressive!
Just finished! Incredible. I really love how it wasn’t all sass and hating on anything... it was so much more of sweet stuff like complementing when it was accurate and appreciating it while respectfully calling out the silly stuff. 12/10 video!
As an Egyptian, I love how she's pointing out the mistakes but she still admires the creativity effort added, besides the made-up stuff they're too much 😂
It may not be accurate at all, but the time it was made in, I think it’s at least a nice representation? As in, “hey look how cool Egypt was/is!” And not a “hey look how savage Egypt was/is!” Because when I watched it as a kid, it made me want to learn more about Egypt and the general regions history. Moving forward all us movie lovers should be more critical of the representation, but we also have to remember that some movies could be used as a “what not to do” then banished all together.
*fun fact:* cats were NOT worshiped because of their connection to death but because they got rid of poisonous snakes that could kill the Pharaoh, and got rid of the mice that carried disease. The original cat Goddess was Mafdet and was seen as a fierce protector of the home, and kind of morphed into Bast-goddess of protection and cats. Bast was the protectress, and defender of the Pharaoh. In later times Bast became the goddess of protection and blessing and was the protectress of women, children and domestic cats. She was the goddess of sunrise, music, dance and pleasure as well as family, fertility and birth. In other words cats are dope.
She kinda dismissed cats as no big deal, though I always heard and read everywhere (I know everywhere is not a reliable source) that cats where worshiped like gods -- or at least that they where pretty important. Hence the amount of cat statues, mummified cats, drawings of cats, etc. Is this a myth? I really would like her to speak further about that.
@@starfall0 maybe shes just tired of hearing it all the time and just dismissed it lol. Or maybe as you said they werent seen AS gods but as very important protectors
@@starfall0 Cats were mummified because again of their connection to protecting the home from snakes and disease carrying mice. Bast is also the daughter of Ra the sun god, and again protector of the Pharaoh. She was very important and thus cats were seen as beloved and important by association. Cats were also mere pets in the home as well. Cats weren't the only animal to be mummified-sacred creatures such as birds, ducks, fish, dogs and cats. Only things and people of importance were mummified, since it was expensive, and given good resting places, which is how the theory that the Pyramids of Giza were built by slaves was debunked. The workers who built the pyramids were given a resting place right next to them-slaves would never have such an honor since the Pyramids were homes to the Pharaohs. Also because Jews didn't exist during the time in which Pyramids were built.
Yes I was surprised to hear they didn’t name cats but then I realized what naming something means and how I believe she is miss understanding their spiritual and mental out look in this one are .. To name something is to own it .. if you up hold cats as guardians of the gods and by law even they were held sacred I know also happened .. then maybe not acting as if you can go around giving them all names you come up with self was actually a response to that sacred status.. instead giving them all one title that describes but not limits them to being a pet was the concept :) I find it hard to think in this one area she was right on they valued dogs more or was lack of value to not name them ... as during a famous battle with the Romans the Egyptians has lost simply because Roman army places cats on all the ships then tossed cats at people and all scattered them among the battle field .. which lead to Egypt surrendering all because was against law to harm a cat and so they refused to fight and risk killing one cat to point they rather of gave up own empire and lives .. Does that make sense they weren’t as valued to be named or dogs were more beloved? I think not my friends !!! For shame on this dog loving vixen of a historian trying to woo us in to her k-9 worshiping ways .. not in this house hold !! Not on this day madam !!! We are sekhmets children and worship the great bast in this house, as are god fearing cat loving individuals!!! As the good lord ra intended !! This blasphemy had to be nipped in the butt I apologize for my language.. I just never!!.. x fans self as twists away and opens umbrella ☂ x come miss meow meow 🐱 we have offerings to deliver and burn at the cat temple for its spring time and we must feed and greet those kitties springing in to action to hunt and protect us from all sorts of unpleasantries x walks away as continues to fan self under the hot unforgiving Egyptian sun as tries my hardest to keep my cat in the shadow being casted from the umbrellas shade x come along and keep in tip top shape with those furry adorably blessed tip top toes .. On a side note the historian revealing the word / title for cats sounds just like meow and maybe exactly where that term and word came from that we all now use , was a awesome tip that made up for her previously catastrophe loaded moment of how cats should be thought of as they were treated and looked upon as in the past :) good day to all those fellow cat worshipping hero’s who stayed true to your masters. What a gloriously sand box heaven awaits such loyal cat servants of this dog forsaken waste land of a common country we find our self living in .. A country that picked Zeus eagle instead of ra falcon .. and picked old white men to lead it instead of young priestess that embrace their pussy cat power to lead our countries way .. what accomplishments could of been if had done right other wise as in the cats eye 🐈

I felt so much nostalgic joy and heartache seeing this house again, and seeing how little it’s changed. they trace a celebrity's ancestry, and the historians tell them their findings and go into detail about their ancestors' lives. made me realize how important history class is (i always thought it was boring in school).
on a side note, it also made me realize why it is so important to have a son (to carry on a family name). there was one episode, where they traced the lineage and found out she came from royalty. the daughter of king edward (can't remember which king edward) married a man, took on his last name, and by the time the family tree moved down several generations to the celebrity, the royal name was buried. such an amazing and important history in their family, and it disappeared, just because the female didn't get to carry on the name.

The representation of the Arabic or even Egyptian Arabic language Was terrible. Lol. Far worst than Indiana jones.
M D i’m gonna have to agree. Good movie and lovely plot, but overall authentic accuracy if out culture is a very misleading image.
To name something is to own it .. if you up hold cats as guardians of the gods and by law even they were held sacred I know also happened .. then maybe not acting as if you can go around giving them all names you come up with self was actually a response to that sacred status.. instead giving them all one title that describes but not limits them to being a pet was the concept :)
I find it hard to think in this one area she was right on they valued dogs more or was lack of value to not name them ... as during a famous battle with the Romans the Egyptians has lost simply because Roman army places cats on all the ships then tossed cats at people and all scattered them among the battle field .. which lead to Egypt surrendering all because was against law to harm a cat and so they refused to fight and risk killing one cat to point they rather of gave up own empire and lives ..
Millions of cats have been killed/sacrificed in Egypt. They were worshiped but in a wrong way. The killed so many of them. :( Watched a docu about it only few days ago.
"This was not stolen from a museum." The kind of clarifications you have to make when you look like a vilian.
Villain

I can definitely see her being a hidden antagonist in an Indiana Jones movie that doesn't get revealed until the final act.
😂😂😂
I love the Egyptologist enthusiasm when explaining stuff. It makes it so easy and fun to learn from.
I could listen to her talk about ancient Egypt for years!
SAME
Basement Dweller Cosplay omg SAME!!!
Same
Basement Dweller Cosplay omg I completely agree! Like ah teach me wise queen!
Check out her instagram!
Both look pretty much like the stereotypical Indiana Jones female character.
Yeah, stunning.

Her doggo is totally the reincarnation of an ancient king 😂
TOTALLY
@@darkiee69 Thanks, I was about to ask the breed of the doggo...it looks like a jindo dog

@@darkiee69 they honestly sound awesome. What do they do when they gotta poo but it rains
@@darkiee69 omg so cute lol
This was the coolest RUclips video ever. I seriously considered Egyptology as a career as soon as I found out it was one, as Ancient Egypt has been a fascination for me since I was 10.
I thought I was pretty well versed, however, I learnt some new things today. Thank you!
I swear she needs a RUclips where she just teaches us about egyptology. I adore her. 💜
She does this on her Instagram account
@@hypatia4754 you can only do so much on Instagram though. Reading the information is one thing, and you only have so much time for videos. I'm thinking bigger, like how to read and speak the language
I'm also just a huge fan of listening to information rather than reading. Helps me remember it better.
Would watch!
@@SuperPooped I would too. I love listening to her talk and explain things.
"THERE'S A CURSE UPON THIS CHEST" I say as I put on a bra...

Now this is what the comment section is for.
Me just having boobs (I'm a trans guy)
big trans mood with binders
As FtM, i felt this comment personally xD though, i only use binders, not bras
I LOVE it when you're in conversation with someone, and they're just like 'oh, let me grab this book, it's has more information', or 'I got a painting that got something to with this', or any thing in the house, that can be used as part of the conversation.
That's exactly like me...... no joke
I love it to, its very interesting and makes it more interesting!
Thank you! We try to keep that same vibe in our new RUclips channel Vintage Egyptologist
@@VintageEgyptologist I just subscribed. I can't wait for your new videos.
There's probably no point in asking given how many inaccuracies Dr Darnell pointed out, but it would be awesome if you guys did this again for The Mummy Returns. Even just for the sake of another collab 😍
OH-MY-GOD. I'm a History teacher in a Secondary School in Spain, and my students are just now learning about Egypt. It's a pitty that their English is not good enough, because I really would LOVE to play this video in my class... And... you know what? Maybe I will, after all, trying to translate it myself for them or something. It's sooooo accurate and interesting and... perfect! Congrats!
That is awesome! If you do, you should consider adding the subtitles to the video for others to use (or to put on in your class when you play it). Hit the cog on the video, go to captions, and then add subtitles. :D
@@erika4971 mmm... I've never donde it... But I have to investigate how to do it
You should play them the assassins creed origins discover mode history tour. 3-D rendered environments, historically accurate and I believe they have a Spanish language and subtitles option.
@@rebekahj8662 we use to talk about that videogame, actually. I've played the first one and the cities are a piece of art.
Si lo traduces lo agradecería, no soy muy buena con el ingles y hay cosas que ella explica que no entiendo
Egyptologyst couples: talks about egyptologyst things
Rachel in the middle: 👁👄👁
Rachel had the look of "Mom and Dad are saying things. I don't understand"
I can see a whole series with this couple and Rachel as the plucky assistant
😂😂😂😂😂
That would be so epic!
MAKE IT SO!!!!
Omg I want it!!!
Well, thank you for the inspiration! I'm writing a novel about an archaeologist in the future and I had no idea on how to write the characters :)
I actually think it's pretty cool that you had ab actual Egyptologist watching this movie with you and point out what was real and what was created by Hollywood
It dispels a lot of what people think is true in Egyptology
if I was a Disney writer, I would be sketching a new movie featuring these two.
come on.... the 1920's era Egyptologist and her adorkable rookie assistant? tell me that's not movie material.
can i take it and turn it to a novel?
This sounds like Xena: Warrior princess but in 1920s Egypt
Tell us you're not a Disney writer without telling us you're not a Disney writer.
2010 called, they want Adorkable back
She looks exactly like the woman from the newest Indiana Jones movie. The one with Shia LaBeouf
i'm mind blown on how this lady can just straight up translate hieroglyphs....also relationship goals

Hieroglyphs are just ancient emojis lol
Nothing like some good old couple abusing their position of power, goaaals!
