- The Devil and Daniel Mouse is an animated Halloween television special, from Canada's Nelvana animation studio.
It is based on the story of The Devil and Daniel Webster.
The Nelvana logo made its first appearance at the end of the film.
The story is about two struggling mouse musicians, Daniel and Jan.
When they are fired from their latest gig (their music is deemed too old-fashioned and not with the times), Daniel goes to pawn his guitar in order to buy groceries.
Jan wanders off on her own and encounters a shifty reptilian character in a white suit who introduces himself as "B.L. Zebubb," a record producer.
He and his assistant, Wheez Weasel, offer her fame and fortune in exchange for signing a contract in blood.
Jan doesn't read the fine print and trusts B.L., signing herself over to his record production company.
Little does she suspect that B.L. is none other than the Devil himself, and at the height of her fame he will return to collect her soul. To assist her, Wheez conjures three band members from thin air (presumably lost souls), a rabbit (Rabbit Delight), a beaver (Boom Boom Beaver), and a nondescript insect (Pray Mantis).
As "Funky Jan," Jan is soon the most popular rock star on the planet while the oblivious Daniel is left out in the cold. But when B.L. comes for her soul and she realizes what she has done, a distraught Jan goes to Daniel for help.
A trial is held in the woods at night over Jan's soul, with Wheez as the judge and Daniel acting as Jan's attorney.
At first the trial seems hopeless considering Daniel has no education as a lawyer and cannot present even the beginnings of a reasonable argument to release Jan.
Ultimately Daniel bets the Devil Jan's soul that he can perform a song and make it good without the Devil's help. The cocky and overconfident Devil agrees, certain that the mouse will fail the test.
As an additional stipend the Devil states that should Daniel fail, his soul as well as Jan's will be taken as payment.
However, Daniel's heartfelt song proves him dead wrong, especially when Jan joins him.
It is so moving that the three lost soul band members, heretofore unhelpful, jump in to assist Jan, who they have come to regard as their friend.
An enraged Devil attempts to summon forth demons to stop the heroes, but the spirits he conjures also fall prey to the sway of Daniel's music.
A frustrated Devil finally leaves, returning to Hell and taking Wheez and all his other minions with him.
All, that is, except the three traitorous band members who for unknown reasons are allowed to remain behind with Daniel and Jan.
The two mice embrace one another as the film ends.
This special became the inspiration for Nelvana's first feature film, Rock & Rule.
The short and a "making of" documentary are included on the two-disk version of that film in a slightly edited form of 22 minutes from its VHS release of 25.

I really love the detail where when she tries to read the details of the contract they just get longer and longer I think that’s such a creative alternative to the “hapless protagonist doesn’t read the devil’s contract at all” cliche

I like how the band just appears out of nowhere and then continues through the whole cartoon like they've existed the whole time.
At the very least the drummer existed before this. Jan's like "I know a drummer..." and the weasel says "You got him!" and summons him up. They're probably studio musicians. At the point where Jan is going to them for help they pack up to leave because they found out she (or rather the devil) didn't pay them anymore.
This cartoon is dripping with the 70's.

Tomas Roberts Wonder if they were meant to be in the same universe. Angel could be Jan and Daniel's descendant. She was a mutant mouse, was she? And her name would make more sense if you think about it.

the saddest thing about this cartoon, is that depict ver clear how is the entertaintment world, the singers, or actors suffers in their lives in a degree that is very normal that they finish killing themselves.

Yet these actors playing entertainers are entertainers themselves. Perhaps they're just as bad or as screwed up in the entertainment world as depicted in this cartoon. Maybe. The presidents of record companies can be very vindictive and manipulative towards the singers they represent.

Yeah I liked that too. You expect her to become a primadonna but she actually keeps a level head and some humility as she was clearly missing Dan despite her success.
I myself have never been to a rock concert in my life. I did however have the fortune of seeing Madonna leave a hotel in Paris and crowds of young people got to see her too.

I think the only good things about cartoons that don't get as much airtime or publicity like this one is when you come across them one faithful day and you're just blown away by them.
I really envy kids of that era who got to see unique stuff like this on tv, I can just picture those retro rooms and TV sets that this premiered on...such a wonderful time, the world was so much bigger.

Eh, you can see all this and more from internet nowadays.
And trust me, those days weren't as magical as you imagine them to be. You had to sit in front of your TV at a right time and right day to see it from television or if you had it on VHS you had to pray your player won't eat the cassette.
And those old heavy tube tellies? Blech... Just thinking about trying to find channels for that thing gives me a cancer.

When everything is available to you at the stroke of a key nothing is as special. While I wouldn't give up the modern conveniences we did give some things up.

The devil is so awesome in this special, I am not gonna lie. He's got a really awesome design, a really awesome shape-shifting ability and a voice that suits him to a t.
Also, gotta love that "Can I trust you?" part where he makes that extremely angelic face.

I love the starchy morphing animation in the Devil film cartoon. The dreamstone had a similar stretchy style especially on the mad scientist Urpgor :)
OBJECTION! I find the contract null and void on the grounds of it being impossible to complete. It could be her best night tonight in the Americas, but what if she has a better night around the world, or the galaxy, or the universe, or even the multiverse. A best night could always be topped by one better. It's too subjective a criteria to be accomplished. Take that technicality and smoke it.
Sustained, there is a great deal of context missing from this 'best night' addendum. I'd call for a mistrial on grounds of double jeopardy; a representative of Mr. Z'bub may have been present at many of the clients performances, but as the contract's author, this would be a matter for his discretion only. Did anyone even set Discovery for these terms and agreements before the proceedings?
Not to mention that Jan was under emotional duress when she signed, thus making the contract invalid
Ghostwriter yeah, and I don't think the prosecution is allowed to set precedent like this, plus any judge and jury has to operate under fair law. Matlock would eat these fuckers alive with butter peas, gravy and toast.

This objection is over ruled on the account of the limitations due to Ms. Mouse's overall performance as a singer. Even if she is to have one better night, as you so put it, a singer's value is based on their popularity overall and their profitability. Due to the events leading to tonight, her position as "World's Best Star" would inevitably be overtaken by another performer, there by allowing Daniel Mouse to complete the addendum of the contract in question.

The best devil voice was Tom Waits in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. The other best one was Legend. This one was pretty good too.

Something tells me that the big G makes sure that the devil is bound by those technicalities and ensures that it's impossible for him to work his way around them like basically the rules are set in stone and there's nothing the devil can do about it
I sort of imagine that those things were part of the arrangements with god after the war in heaven. Basically the regulations for future operations for both sides.

tom11zz884 there are people who actually made a deal with the devil, look it up. This one guy who couldn't play guitar met the the devil at a cross road at 12:00am, and the next day played guitar like no other.
I know. These days Satan admits he owns the industry to the public instead of just the ones who sign. He even tried to make a deal with Jesus. Like everyone else he was given permission by God to do it when he was in a weak spot.

Exactly. And “a song from the heart” will not be able to save your soul. Only Jesus can do that. Although this animation was great, sometimes I feel like it’s actually mocking those who have gotten into contracts with the devil in real life knowing there’s only one of two ways to get out of it. Death or giving your life to Jesus Christ. But like the young rich ruler, that would mean having to give up the money and fame. The devil in real life doesn’t play nice nor fair.

fun fact: This would be the basis, going forward, for the movie that nearly bankrupted Nelvana. Not because it was bad, but because the advertising team dropped the ball.
The film is called 'Rock & Rule", and, if you watch them back to back, you can think of Rock and Rule as the Sequel, where the two heroes have been reincarnated after centuries and the Devil has come back in the form of Mok, the Super Rocker, hellbent on releasing a powerful demon of Hell to get revenge on his fanbase for a drop in sales.
It's a crazy-good time, with killer tunes throughout, and you should really, REALLY check it out!
Dang this animation is so smooth! It's such a shame how far we've fallen from this kind if quality... Now everything is done on the cheap, CGI, outsourced, budget digital...
That shot where the devil's flames die out at the end and the forest critters are just staring and blinking in disbelief gets me every time. XD

I saw this when it first aired back in the 70's and remember going to school the next day excitedly discussing it with my friends who had also seen it and trying to find the words to describe it for those who hadn't.
I wish I could've been there to hear it. I grow increasingly fond of this short and I would love to hear/read more folks discussing it.

I was a teenager in junior high when this aired around Halloween, mid to late 1970's. Until RUclips, I hadn't seen it since then. Amazing how well it holds up. I would go so far to say...it's a classic!

True. Jan was much smarter than most other characters in this situation, smart enough to actually try to read the whole contract. The Devil deliberately hid the part about her soul from her, so it's entirely his fault that she didn't know. Yeah, Jan should have guessed it was too good to be true, but she was desperate.
Better way to solve this problem than what the ending ended up being.
Actually the contract is null and void cause souls are not a material object. Thus makes everyone question whether they exist or not and since no one actually know other than god and the dead.
It'd be foolish to use a contract to buy a soul as it's illegal.
First rule in making a deal with the devil: DON'T!

Man, the Devil's animation was so fluid. It was like he was living putty with how much he squished, grew and bent at a lot of points and it was great. I also loved how he wasn't any real sort of animal; he could be anything to trick people and his overall design could be scary or just big and warm depending on whatever mood he wanted to push.
Great special.

OMG!!! I have not seen this beautiful animated film since the 70's, (I'm 50 yrs old now). Believe it or not, I've always remembered the "Moral" to the story, "A song from the Heart beats the devil every time." THANK YOU for sharing!! :-)

Nelvana was the company who made this. They did some wonderful stuff over the 70s and 80s. The terrific film Rock and Rule, A Cosmic Christmas, Romie-0 and Julie-8, Star Wars - Droids! Oh, and Nelvana was a Canadian company. :)
Nelvana is still around and their the biggest Canadian animation studio and have made a large number of animated shows.

This is reminiscent of Ralph Bakshi's "FRITZ THE CAT" CARTOONS 1 & 2, "THE NINE LIVES OF FRITZ THE CAT"...!!!! ("FUNKY-NICE!!")
Jesus the part at 15:45 gets me every time. The way they show Jan's emotions as she finally reunites with Dan.
You can clearly see how theres a million things running through her head at once, but through all she's been through that night, you can see her finally be able to just let it all out, even if this is the last time she'll be able to see him, that at least she can have the peace of saying goodbye to him.
Fucking bravo.
The visuals on this animated film is so amazing. So good, I remember it even today, and i first watched it over 45 years ago.

It was really weird being a big Bauhaus fan for many years and having heard their piece "Party of the First Part" and its distinctive dialogue segments many times, to finally randomly watch this animation a few years ago and stumble upon the source without meaning to. That felt weird! Haha... what a great sample.
Um. This isn't the source, "party in the first part" is standard legalese for any contract or legal document.
My brother and I saw this as little kids as an ABC special and we talked about it later our whole lives, how strange of a cartoon it was. Interesting how she changed into Dolly Parton and also looked and sang like Barbara Streisand later after her transformation during the interview.
After 30 years in the entertainment and publishing industry, the shape shifting predatory nature of things is real and can be vicious.
In the end its important to remember and be in touch with the friends you always had because you’ll need them.

Wow JUST WOW! I am a child of the 70's and remember watching animation just like this back then! Animalympics, Wizards, Coonskin, Fritz the Cat, Tarzoon, Watership Down and the likes. This was a Disney Movie compared to some of the DARK STUFF I watched back then as a kid. But still a very good watch! If you like this watch Animalympics next, you will enjoy it, Warning some of the titles I listed have some very TWISTED themes. Not safe for an innocent mind (Coonskin, Fritz the Cat, Watership Down) to name a few. Great Video Thank You!!!

You'd never find that type of joke in an American cartoon, neither would you find such genuinely frightening animation of the devil. Love the stuff from Nelvana studios--this and 'A Cosmic Christmas.'

even Wheez Weasel reformed....it looked like it. He seemed happy for Dan and Jan when he set them from free as judge. Notice how he smiled at them 23:52 just as he was about to descend back into Hell after he retrieved his judge's wig. He didn't wave good bye to them, but he did smile at them. That was an indication he was wishing them luck in life.
Never thought about it that way. I always believed it was more of a "Darn, I lost" smile.

Wow. I remember watching this on TV when it aired in the 70s. I was about 4 and it scared the hell out of me. Amazing to see it again after almost 40 years! The 70s were spectacular.

Only her and the beaver were dressed in KISS getup. Jan looked nothing like her regular self. it was hard to believe that was her performing. But she looked great in that KISS getup.

omg been trying to find this since like..forever. i always felt this was a creepy as a child. but serious tale.
This cartoon was so good I watch every Halloween it just has such good animation, amazing music and fabulous story telling.

I like a lot of things here such as how they portrayed the Devil as a shapeshifter with a barely contained temper but very reasonable in the end, how she didn't just sign right away but seriously looked for sketchy stuff before hand, and how when they tried to beat the Devil in court with a technicality he got super quick to fix it as if he's lost to that kind of stuff before in this modern world and he's NOT gonna have it happen again.

Can you imagine being a kid growing up in the late 70's early 80's and this showing on the Sfm holiday network while on holiday from school and being intrigued and scared at the same time! This was me the mere thought of the devil was frightening let alone to see such a good portrayal in a cartoon!
I like how Beelzebub doesn't have a specific species. He morphs between different creatures which prey on mice.
I had the film on VHS (recorded from TV) in early 1980s and watched it over and over again. remember so many details. so great to be able to see him here again. Thanks.
She looks like the bag lady in Rock & Rule! And the weasel sounds like Mylar! I’m so sad this and R&R went under the radar
Even the gothic rock band Bauhaus loved this animation, they use the part of the contract for the Sky's Gone out in the track Party of the First Part.

Im not gonna lie, that has got to be the best example of animation I have ever seen.
Vivid emotion, smooth facial transitions, consistant walking as all of that is going on, teachers I college should use this as a reference.
You might want to check out their other Major Motion picture project 'Rock & Rule'. It's a more complex version of this same story arc. More mature, a load of 80's Rock icons and the animation is just outstanding.

Poor character development, original but rediculous plot line, and just plain unappealing.
This is the inspiration for the devil in Constantine.
And the moral of the story is don't go and do a Whitney Houston style ballad, because that's when the devil's got you in the palm of his hand.

I'm convinced the animators that worked on the devil's mouth movements were the ones that did the same for Mok in Rock and Rule
Considering the quirkiness of both characters facial movements I concur.
This short is what inspired Rock and Rule.
I don't remember when I saw this on TV, only that I was a kid sometime in the '70s, but that final sequence of the Devil throwing the towel in and roaring, "From now on ... no more MR. _NIIICE_ *GUYYYYYYYY!!!!!!* " freaked me out so badly that I never forgot it.

Hi, so happy it brings you joy! I faintly remember seeing both of these cartoons, in a hotel-room when I was really young, around halloween.(Norway). I actually thought it was some kind of a weird fever dream.😂
It tok a long time before I found out, that is was real cartoons and not a dream.

This movie brings back so many memories!!! I remember watching it over and over with some other short stories like this on VHS!! This movie planted a seed.. about the music industry and all the weird/evil things that go on with it ! I believe many of the musicians of the past and today took some kind of offer up like this in a sense . All for FAME!

I like Dan. I don’t know the relationship between them ( probably best friends ) but I like how Dan is willing to save Jan’s soul even if Jan was busy thinking about becoming a star ( tho she still thinked about Dan ). I like the ending!
Indeed. In my opinion, Nelvana strongly succeeded in making Jan and Dan genuinely likable. That is an easy thing to err in if one is not careful.
