This is definitely one of the weird things I remember from my childhood that I didn’t know if it was real or not! I can’t believe I found it after 20 years!!! As an adult now, I can totally see where and how my love for dark and obscure 1980’s fantasy films began.
I had the exact same experience. It was so long ago I wasn’t sure if I had just created a false memory from other things. I almost couldn’t believe it when I finally found it.
i searched my mind for sooo long trying to remember the title of this cartoon. it's imagery is etched into my childhood memories. truly an unrecognized classic. i would love seeing a Jim Henson Studio(Dark Crystal, Labyrinth) style feature length production of this IP.
I have not seen this cartoon since some time in the eighties, well over thirty-five years ago, and I still remember seeing it back when they still showed cartoon specials at night like this one.
I remember this 🥰 oh how it’s all coming back to me!!! My mum got this lovely movie on VHS and I lost it!! So happy to see it on here!!!! Thank you for uploading this!!!
Thank you uploader Brohann. In the 80s when I was a child I had only seen the trailer for Faeries on the Family Home Entertainment VHS tape for Riki Tiki Tavi. This was a time when children's animated films were intelligently written (not as ridiculously stupid as today's kid's cartoons) and you were genuinely touched by emotions you were scared of the evil forces, cheered the good guys, cried when a loved character dies etc. This is gorgeously animated based on the Brian Froud book. I remember being frightened of the Shadow which looked like a huge dragon in a tower to me. I also did spot the nude fairy (with long hair covering all the spots that would have made it X rated) I had always wanted to see this film which at the time looked and felt very grown up to me. Hans Conreid as the Shadow was terrific I can never forget his line "Who intrudes upon my perfect darkness!". I equate this level of somewhat adult fantasy at the same level as The Last Unicorn which I also saw on VHS and with The Secret of Nimh and to a degree even the very graphic Watership Down. I also see this as a kind of B movie animated version of WILLOW. I miss the 80s and I miss when animated films were masterpieces. I am so proud of my generation/age group. Thank you for making me re live my childhood.
Thank you Rachel for such a well written and thought out comment! Yes, there are definitely some cartoon gems out there from our childhood. I am planning on turning the children's books I wrote into a cartoon series someday. My goal is to have a cartoon that is so compelling that three generations of a family would all sit down and watch it together. If everyone can laugh out loud, shout, shed tears, and celebrate together as a family then I would be very happy. I am so glad this old recording was able to bring you joy.
Would never have been able to piece this together without Google, but here it is, a cartoon that I enjoyed many times as a child. Thanks for putting this up!
Up to the point the hero's shadow fought the villain, I had completely forgot I had seen this as a kid. I even remembered the part where the villain claws the back of the shadow and hero's back bleeds. Thanks for posting this!
Don't know about a DVD release but I can say when this aired. At the end, the announcer mentions the 9th Pan American Games starting "tomorrow" in Caracas, Venezuela. I looked it up and they began on August 14th, 1983. Combine that with a google search for calendars to see... "Faeries" had a release date of Saturday August 13th, 1983!
Stumbled upon this, - it looks great, and as an Irish person I can say they lifted the main characters' names from the legend of Oisín and NIamh (who seduces Oisín and brings him to the fairy realm for 3 years - while 300 years pass in the mortal realm) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ois%C3%ADn . Sadly they woefully mispronounce Niamh - it's meant to be pronounced like nee-ev.
Animated special in 1981 based on the characters by Brian Froud. The Faerie King requests a young mortal to help stop his evil shadow from controlling Faerie Land. Fred Hellmich, Lee Mishkin and Hans Conreid. 25 minutes long.
I had a 3 hour vhs, first hour was tom and jerry, second tweety and sylvester and last hour was new missadventures of icabod crane and this. I found it just now after 20 years and many attempts to id the film
Now show me the cartoon where a princess is feeding little babies that won't eat because her mean sister was trying but got mad. Pudding or something. One of these strange old cartoons.
My Uncle created this. Fred Hellmich along with his friend Lee Mishkin. The special was directed by Lee Mishkin with animation direction by Fred Hellmich.
Am I missing something here? Why does the shadow want to get rid of the sun? Light is what causes shadows he should want the sun to be out all the time.
I just looked it up on the Wikipedia and one of the creators of the book this movie came from worked with Peter Jackson for the Lord of the Rings movies.
What ever happened to great shows like these

I am so glad you were able to find this little gem again. It definitely also influenced me and my love of fantasy.
what are some of your FAVORITE 1980's fantasy?
My feelings exactly 😊
This was on a the beginning of the Velveteen Rabbit as a trailer. Nightmare fuel.
I had the exact same experience. It was so long ago I wasn’t sure if I had just created a false memory from other things. I almost couldn’t believe it when I finally found it.
I used to be obsessed with this cartoon and am thrilled I found it again ! They seriously need to bring this out on DVD
I agree. This is a really great film.
I paid $75 in 2001 to buy this on VHS, that's how much this "stuck" with me
I've been trying to remember this for damn near 40 years. Thank you so much!
I watched this on VHS every single day when I was a kid
I’ve never seen or had it
i searched my mind for sooo long trying to remember the title of this cartoon. it's imagery is etched into my childhood memories. truly an unrecognized classic. i would love seeing a Jim Henson Studio(Dark Crystal, Labyrinth) style feature length production of this IP.
I had it on vhs & watched it to the point i wore it out.
Apparently I heard it used to be from “Family Home Entertainment”.
Same here
I have not seen this cartoon since some time in the eighties, well over thirty-five years ago, and I still remember seeing it back when they still showed cartoon specials at night like this one.
I never forgot that little Irish elf who gave them the food and hospitality. He was my favorite character.
Holy crap, it just hit me that Shadow has the same voice actor as the Grinch from the Grinch Night special.
Hans Conried, was also the voice of Captain Hook and Mr. Darling in Disney's Peter Pan.
To all that have had memories and dreams of the shadow boss. I feel you. I really do.

I remember when it was on VHS of F.H.E.
Oooh I loves Riki tiki tavi too !
Would never have been able to piece this together without Google, but here it is, a cartoon that I enjoyed many times as a child. Thanks for putting this up!
The ending fight always haunted me, because it was a very brutal fight for a kid's cartoon.
Bits of visuals and sounds from this have ran around in my head ever since its release
I agree with you this needs to be out on DVD it is still enjoyably to watch with family
Brings back Some Fond Memories....Cartoon Isn't the same anymore.....

The book on which this is based is FABULOUS. The most amazing illustrations ever.
Up to the point the hero's shadow fought the villain, I had completely forgot I had seen this as a kid. I even remembered the part where the villain claws the back of the shadow and hero's back bleeds. Thanks for posting this!
"Come mortal!" "Already did >.>"
I REMEMBER THIS FILM! Had this on a VHS with The Secret of NIMH, Transformers the Movie, etc.
I’ve never had it but one of my videos had the trailer
I wish they would release this on DVD or something
Melanie P me too. When i was a kid i absolutely loved this film. It was one of my favorites. Just wish the video didnt wear out.
The DVD I found was probably fake.
I absolutely LOVE this!❤😊
do not eat fairy food.. You'll be trapped in their realm for eternity...!
As long as you know what you're getting into...
many people would find it better than live in the human world
Christophiel maybe but wouldn't that be bad with a farie princess that cute.

The release date was February 25, 1981. This must have been from a subsequent airing.
Yeah, once a guy enters the world of fairies, he never comes back 😵💫
Predates the candle wearing kobolds of WoW by quite a bit.

the plugs for other CBS shows at the end added some special magic for me
Vere Paine Listens
Yep
Vere Paine Listens you saw it on CBS?
this was like the greatest thing ever animated.......
Cute cartoon. I enjoyed it. As an adult it kept me entertained.
Sometimes I imagine to go to Faerieland and meet the faeries. In fact, I’d like to write a story about it.
Animated special in 1981 based on the characters by Brian Froud. The Faerie King requests a young mortal to help stop his evil shadow from controlling Faerie Land. Fred Hellmich, Lee Mishkin and Hans Conreid. 25 minutes long.
Any ideas about the music and where I might find more of it?
Excellent work dudes and happy Independence Day!!
I had a 3 hour vhs, first hour was tom and jerry, second tweety and sylvester and last hour was new missadventures of icabod crane and this. I found it just now after 20 years and many attempts to id the film
I agree with you on this they would air them again and release all of them on dvd

I used to watch this constantly as a toddler but my parents were always horified that they couldn't pronounce Niamh and winced every time.
Oshin neon fungy
16:07 that's some serious creaking
...She forgot to Mention ...Evil TROLLS..
this is so cool!
I actually have this on DVD, lol
Where did you get it??
The Animation is from the Creators of HE-MAN...
I thought so too, but did not recognise the names.
Oisin has the same hairdo as Prince Adam.
My Uncle created this. Fred Hellmich along with his friend Lee Mishkin. The special was directed by Lee Mishkin with animation direction by Fred Hellmich.
1:22
Okay, not even 2 minutes in and this escalated.
Am I missing something here? Why does the shadow want to get rid of the sun? Light is what causes shadows he should want the sun to be out all the time.
I'm looking for the Christmas moive where the car adopted the baby and blessed him and he later became Santa Klaus
I 💗 this!!!
Hans Conried can make anyone sound cool!!
I used to be from “Family Home Entertainment”.
Someone should make new live action movie
Who else gets a Tolkien vibe from this?
I just looked it up on the Wikipedia and one of the creators of the book this movie came from worked with Peter Jackson for the Lord of the Rings movies.
Is it just me? But I find female fairies exoticly erotic. Guess that's why I like different races of women.
0:55 don’t listen to her. Things rarely turn out well when mortals interact with Faeries
Enchantment fairies gnomes trolls pixies sprites elves......🥰
μιλάτε Ελληνικά?
2 goblins dislike this
0:53 That buttchin tho
Hagsie
That's not how you pronounce 'Niamh'.😂
This is such a weird show.
The audio on this vid is terrible. Why would anybody release a crappier version of something that has been on youtube for years...
