Cosgrove Hall's animated adaption of Sir Terry Pratchett's sixth Discowrld novel; Wyrd Sisters, features the three witches Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick getting tangled up in the royal politics of Lancre.
Produced in 1997. With Christopher Lee as the voice of Death.
The dialogue in this is literally word for word from the book, and not a single page missing.
Every scene, every movement and inflection is exactly as written.
The witches are exactly as I pictured them, and the rest of the characters are spot on.
This film has got to be - hands down - the most faithful adaptation of a novel in existence.
That's slightly hyperbolic, but you're not far off. It's amazingly faithful.
BBC version of Pride and Prejudice 😊

"With Christopher Lee as the voice of Death." I'm convinced.
He's been the voice of Death in most of the Discworld movies. Animated and nonanimated. Except for Hogfather, where he was voiced by Ian Richardson. RIP to both of them, and Terry Pratchett.
GNU!@@geekasauruswreks8789
He's particularly great in the Soul Music adaptation, where he's got to do a lot of deadpan humour. As well as flying over the edge of the cliff on a motorbike yelling "Ohhh bugger!"

Nothing more British than responding to an all-powerful, omnipresent entity who says "I have many names" with asking which one they're using at present.
Well said.
I love Christopher Lee s voice fantastic actor Him and Ian Richardson who was the voice of Death in The Hogfather also loved his voice another brilliant actor 🌟🌟 xx
I know we lost Ian Richardson I don’t know about Christopher Lee Such great actors 💖💖

This is the most direct adaptation of a book I've ever seen.
The only one more loyal is possibly the Maltese Falcon
Just a shame there's a few unnecessary tweaks like changing it from 16 to 18.

It was Anette Crosby who did the voice for Granny Weatherwax, June Whitfield provided the voice for Nanny Ogg.
I think the poster was referring to the actual death of Granny Weatherwax in the final Discworld novel, 'The Shepherd's Crown'.
@@the_unrepentant_anarchist. My husband learned about the Discworld through my laughing out loud at various sections from the books over the years. He's told me that I'm a lot like Susan mixed in with Granny Weatherwax and a little of Nanny Ogg and I consider that a high compliment since Granny Weatherwax is one of my favourite characters. I found The Shepherd's Crown" disturbing and upsetting because of the death of Granny Weatherwax, the introduction of a rather one-dimensionally unbelievable character - the 'calm weaver' - and, like most who've read the book, because it was Pratchett's last ever novel.
@Kybele Kordax-
Upsetting indeed!
To be honest though, I think T.P had been planning to kill off Granny Weatherwax for a while.
I'm sure there were a few hints in previous books, but what was most upsetting to me, was the way you could tell, certainly from 'Unseen Academicals' onwards, that his illness was beginning to affect his writing.
I reckon that without Lyn & Rhianna's input, the last five or so books would've been practically unreadable!
Such a terrible disease, literally destroying one of the finest minds of our lifetime.

Nanny Ogg has always been my favorite witch; I particularly love her annual bath night ritual... (for those who haven't read Lords and Ladies, you've gotta read it!)
Terry Pratchett is one of those writers who always had the ability to cheer me up, no matter what was going on in my life; I wish he were still here creating more of Discworld, but I'm so grateful for all the wonderful books he wrote, and for the various film adaptations.
Thank you so much for posting!!

She's the best, I wish she was my mum. 😂

Same. Terry Pratchett has kept me willing to live through some of the worst times in my life. I am very grateful for him & all his work.
I read somewhere that Pratchett had said Nanny was the most powerful of the witches, and part of that power was that no one realized it.
"This time we spread out, but separately."
Oh my god.
The writing is gold xD
@@yukowolfang8645 the writing is gold because it's taken directly from a Discworld series novel by Terry Pratchett. Apologies if you already knew this, but the way your response is written it seemed that you didn't.

The animation is obviously dated but the voice acting is timelessly perfect. I love the witches! :)
Not sure what you mean, But Discworld has animation that dates like fine wine.
I feel like i can count on one hand the number of animated films nowadays that can come close to the charm this show has.
Well i may be biased, but i mean, just look at Death. every frame of him gives me chills will im laughing.
Nonsense, today's robotic flash-esque computer animation is garbage, this painted animation is like art.
Critics are like:
"HA! HA! HA! Missed..."
unlike the creators:
"Perhaps you won't aware what I was aiming at!"
Maybe the animations are dated but it looks authentic for me
Giving Shakespeare a brummie accent was genius!😂
Don't let the animation turn you off (it did for me, initially). Hell, you don't even need to watch, you can listen to it in the background. The dialog is golden, and to someone who hasn't read Pratchett, I see it's high time I started.
Xaos Bob as a long time reader this couldn't make me happier to hear, welcome to the family 😃
The animation is actually surprisingly good in places, but you have to except that the production was probably a little bit troubled. The scene with the conjured demon in particular is animated very well, but then there's other scenes that look really stiff. It's a mixed bag.
Been reading Discworld for a long time, started at twelve. (Thirteen? ...) Anyway, have these movies on VHS somewhere. Good stuff.

Xaos Bob personally I like both. the animation takes a required taste.
How did get here... why did I watch a 2 hour cartoon, and why do i find this so enjoyable?

man did this unlock some core memories -- my mum (a big Pratchett fan) recorded this off the tv when it first came out and it made such a huge impression on me that I watched it pretty much on a loop as a kid, cheesy 90s ads and all. I'm probably biased, but I actually think the animation has some pretty striking moments even if they're clearly done on a shoestring budget. granny weatherwax's vision and the invocation scenes especially are still burned into my brain twenty years down the line. thanks so much for uploading!!

The animation in my opinion was excellent. I grew up watching The Lord of the Rings animated movie, you know the one that used rotoscope animation. At any rate, I enjoyed this greatly and the ending itself was something I found very nice. I was happy the King didn't dump the witch just because he wasn't a fool any longer.
Read the other books, like Carpe Jugulum! The new King and Magrat stay together 😊 don't want to spoil the whole thing for you though.
I wouldn't kick it out of bed for smoking a lil crack, that's for sure.
This has such well written dialogue that it's honestly terrifying.
The books it was taken from is a true masterpiece
True 'dat
I love how they even throw in like 90 percent of the in story inside jokes from the books.
Even with his minor role, Death is still the best character.
+TheLordmep Always
Christopher Lee, always a win.
lol fumbling over his lines when he took over the role in the play ^^
+Yuko Wolfang EXACTLY. One of THE most classic examples of why Pratchett's Death is the best. You literally see him going from correcting the actor's lines, that he probably just overheard, to fumbling over those same lines a moment later. He didn't forget them, that is a classic example of stage fright. Death, who has existed before recorded history and reaped millions of souls, got stage fright. If anyone is still reading this long-winded comment, read Pratchett's Reaper Man if you haven't already.
Bonus fact: Death is of the only character, who you can find in all of Prachett's books. Even if just for one line, but hr is allways there.
The look on death’s face as he forgets his lines
If I'm not dead why are you here?
-Waiting.-
That was perfect.
Agreed
I've always really loved Discworlds version of Death. There have been comedic versions of the Grim Reaper before but a lot of the time they portray him as kind of a loser who is trying to be scary (undestandably, the juxtaposition of a scary image and a dorky personality is funny). Death here is just a guy doing his job because he has to and everybody just accepts it. That whole attitude is a big reason why I love the book series, you get fantastical creatures and events and people are just like "yeah, that makes sense, well anyway, does anybody fancy a cuppa?" because this is just the norm for the strange land of Discworld.
I love it, I think would be the main thing to take away from this wall of fangirling text.
I agree. I like the cute kitten he pets as well...must help with the stress of swinging that sickle all day. Such a perfect pair, don't you think?

I too appreciate his stoicism; Terry left such a great world, full of everyday personalities in surreal situations.
Theo van Mierlo ..lol😂
I still like Neil Gaiman's Death the best.
Part of the reason he's used so much, he's a dead ringer.
"don't worry, it won't be forever... it will just seem like forever"

Read the books!! You will love them. The witches are only three of the many, many excellent characters created by Terry Pratchett.
I love the Gregorian chanting of the jokes at the fools guild! 😂
You can tell they worked on a tight budget, but it's a labor of love all the same. They had to condense an entire book into 2 hours and did a marvelous job.

The last time we were lucky enough to have someone as talented as T.P. was when Will Shakespeare was around. His is a great loss to humanity. I consider myself fortunate indeed to have been alive during his own lifetime, though future generations will also (insert your own verb/s here) the Discworld. A legacy to rival that of the Bard himself.
I've always greatly admired, and enjoyed immensely, Terry's ability to hold up a mirror to human ridiculousness.
I hope his encounter with Death was as pleasurable for him as he deserved, and as pleasurable also for the many encounters he provided for his readers.
RIP, Terry. Long live Pratchett!
+Tom Foyle I'm with you there. Will Shakespeare still has the power to make me laugh. I particularly enjoy the movie versions of his works staged in modern dress, it makes you realize how contemporary his plays are, but then mankind hasn't really changed much!
+Michael Lulham
Yep, centuries later we still laugh at the same comedy, cry at the same tragedy. Or, as Didactylos might have said, "It's a funny old world, right enough."
+Tom Foyle I'd probably enjoy Shakespeare a lot more if it didnt take an unnecessary amount of deciphering to determine what the hell he was trying to say in the first place. Old English is one giant pain in the ass to understand. I remember my senior year reading Macbeth. Our teacher was really into it and the students couldn't even understand the story (Mind you she was one fucking atrocious teacher. On grad day we just destroyed her car with spray paint) The only thing we got out of Macbeth was that witches like mischief.
+Scythe-Master Inc. Then it sounds like you really got nothing out of Macbeth. Didn't you hear? Witches don't like meddling. I assume meddling includes mischief. Still, hard not to imagine a teenaged Esme burying an incompetent instructor's car/carriage/house under a mountain of droppings via entering the mind of every incontinent bird in a ten mile radius.
Zer0d00d Wait you had designated areas where birds would poop? That sounds like awesome prank potential.
This is truly a hidden gem of wit, comedy, and absurdity. And you say the books are better? I can't wait to read them! :D
Maxx Kroes Starting with colour of magic is the best way to get people to not read the whole series. Start with Equal Rites, it's a witches book, like this film and it is when Pratchett starts to really get into the groove of discworld.
Yuko Wolfang You could also start with The Wee Free Man, it's just about a young girl learning to be a witch so it's pretty accessible
The Tiffany Aching series are wonderful and she's my favorite character. A Granny Weatherwax in training.
You need to ignore a heck of a lot of plagiarism.
@@alexanderhay-whitton4993 I don't think it's plagiarism at all; it's parody. If you check out the Annotated Pratchett File online you can see a break down of a lot of the references and jokes

If you break a rule, do it as cleanly as possible. If you shatter a rule, sometimes there's no going back.
Death's horse being called "binky" is the funniest thing yet.
“I didn’t become a soldier for this- not to go around killing people!”
Omg what is this… absolutely delightful
I believe, that Terry Pratchett's books should not in any way be made into movies, where actors play. They are a lot more suitable for animated films, like this one.
I've only begun to get into the series and I agree. Perhaps if more people get into the books and there is a great demand they'll do some animate films.
AnnaArs09 Then you obviously haven't seen Hogfather, or Going Postal. Both are considerably better productions than this is, and are live action. (Michelle Dockery as Susan "Death's Granddaughter" Sto Helit is superb in the roll)
To me, this is lackluster and hurried. All of Pratchett's great wordplay is here, but it's rushed and the timing isn't good. They tried to cram every last word and joke in too limited an amount of time. Not to mention the animation is terrible. Only two things stand out: Christopher Lee as the voice of Death, and Jane Horrocks as the absolutely perfect voice of Magrat. Otherwise the voice acting is mediocre at best.
Yes I have seen the movies.
AnnaArs09 +
+AnnaArs09 You don't believe that the books..... should be made into movies... with live actors. You are a dunce I say! All the books should be made into movies, live action or otherwise. They should also be made into a Saturday morning cartoon. And a breakfast cereal. Wallpaper. Everything really. There is NOTHING that cannot be improved by the addition of Terry Pratchett, because he is a figurative god. Possibly a literal god now that he's shuffled off this mortal coil.
That VOICE is just as one hears it in one's head when reading teh books.
Screw all the nay-saying below; I really enjoyed this. They did a better than decent job bringing the story to visual. My only problem is that there's too much good stuff in here that someone who hasn't read the books - particularly other books than _Wyrd_ _Sisters_ - wouldn't get. The Librarian, for instance.
Nonetheless, Granny Weatherwax was almost exactly how I pictured her and that's all I really needed. She's my favorite character in Discworld.

Well as a fan of cartoons i'd say a visual medium should live up more to it's namesake!
If I wanted good realistic writings i'd read critics reviews on politics and documentaries.
But if a show had great writing but awful art and animation then it's not trying to tell a story, just yell an idea
a gamer would not say this......a writer would. Gamers very much so care about graphics; shitty graphics can ruin even the best of games. But storytelling alone doesn't care for such things
Christopher Lee acting like he can't remember his lines might be the best acting in this *VERY* well-acted rendition.

"The thing that's made to look like the thing often looks more like the thing than the thing itself."
Truth.
This is the first time I'm seeing this movie, at first I thought it was a weird, low budget film, but honestly this is surprisingly good! I love the characters!!
Try the book of the same name, by Terry Pratchett. He wrote many books about the world in which this story takes place, the Discworld, a few of which besides the Wyrd Sisters feature the witches (Witches Abroad, Lords & Ladies, Maskerade and Carpe Jugulum).
This was my first incursion into the Wyrd Sisters and I must say it was masterfully written story with moral underpinnings and was animated very well. It showed depth in its plot but also such absurdity in it as well with all the ridiculous cross banter.
I am hooked!
I watch this movie nearly every night to drift off to sleep, it’s one of my favorites next to the Color of Magic
I love you!
Just wow...I know that the animation wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but it still had an old world charm to it. Magrat's voice actress was spot on!
I think the animation sets the perfect mood.
Fabulous .. I love that the witches have West Country accents.. First class production 💫✨..
Magrats laugh is brutal XD
brutally cute
Well, it's a good adaptation on the whole. They took out some things I thought should have been left in and added some things I saw no need for. But they mainly stayed very true to the letter-- and the spirit!-- of Sir Terry Pratchett's work. Having one of the elephants move his leg to allow the sun to go by in the end credits scene was priceless!
I've known about it for years but hadn't read anything, now I get a sense of what I've missed and I want more. This is good stuff.
