Dragon's Blood (1985 Cartoon)

  • Dragon's Blood's was an adaptation of the Jane Yolen book of the same name, about a world of bonded slaves, dragons, and pit-fighting. It was part of "The Pit Dragon" series, and adapted for television for the CBS Storybreak. Of the cartoon adaptation, Yolen once remarked that "it looked as if someone had waved the book in the direction of the camera" and done little else.
I'm sure I'm not the only one, however, who was inspired by the cartoon to go out and read the actual book. While the cartoon does take more than a few fanciful excesses with the material, I really quite enjoyed it all the same.
As far as I can tell, this is one of the many abandoned relics of 80's television, and not likely to ever get a DVD or digital release. I've placed it here solely for archival and nostalgia purposes, all due credit to the appropriate content owners. Please don't sue me.
Jane Hyatt Yolen (born 11 February 1939) is an American author and editor of folklore, fantasy, science fiction, and children's books. She has written over 280 books, the best known of which is the Holocaust novella The Devil's Arithmetic. Her other works include the Nebula Award-winning short story Sister Emily's Lightship, the novelette Lost Girls, Owl Moon, The Emperor and the Kite, the Commander Toad series and How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight.
CBS Storybreak is a Saturday morning anthology television series that originally aired on the CBS network during the 1985 season. Hosted by Captain Kangaroo's Bob Keeshan (and in its 1993 return by The Cosby Show's Malcolm Jamal-Warner), the episodes are half-hour animated adaptations of some of the most beloved children's books published at the time of airing.
Southern Star Productions, Hanna-Barbera Australia, CBS Entertainment Production
    Distributed by: Columbia Broadcasting System
Voice Actors: Stephen Spears, Mel Welles.
Directed By Gordon Kent, Chris Cuddington.
Produced By Steve Lumley, Buzz Potamkin, Paul Bogrow.
    Written By Jane Yolen.
First Aired on May 25, 1985.

My memories of this go back pretty far. I saw this cartoon when I was little and loved it, so my mom checked Janoe Yolen's whole Pit Dragon Trilogy and read them to me. Then later I read them to myself when I was a teenager. I love dragons and I love those books.
So again, thank you. This brought back loads of nostalgia.

Growing up in the 80's, I remember watching the CBS Storybreak. I don't remember this episode specifically but the irony is that 15 years later I'd pick up the exact same book from the local library and completely fall in love with the Dragon's Blood/Heart's blood series. This is just so cool to find out that your favorite book actually had a cartoon adaptation.
This cartoon looks like it took some of its insperation for setting and music from the video game called Shadow of the Beast series. Mainly the amiga version and the second one.

Same thing for me. I totally get why Jane Yolen herself doesn't like this, but... it still drove a lot of people to her books. And, I admit, I do have a fondness for it as a kid's story on it's own. It's nothing like the book, but then again, when you have to pack a whole back into 22 minutes, tone it for children, and still cover the major plot points.... well, it's good for what it was.

  • @MrBowserFish

I just found out that a 4th book of the series was finally released. I remember when I was 10 years old I wrote to Yolen to have a 4th book. I guess 15 years later my request was granted! I'm re-reading the 1st 3 books before the 4th and was REALLY happy to stumble across this video - this is what got me to read the books in the first place!

(I can place the time because I was obsessed with Link to The Past at the time), anyway, in my 8th grade literature class's textbook there was a bit of Anne McCaffery's "Dragonriders of Pern" and when I saw this cartoon, I totally created a connection between them in my head, lol.

I have read all the books in The Dragon Riders of Pern series, and immediately made the link in my mind when I first saw this iconic story many years ago. They could have expanded this into a series, it had the potential. Also, they were originally going to make a movie on Anne McCaffrey's series of books, but sadly never did, as she did not like what she saw of the adaption they started on, not long before she passed away.

He wrote the epic Dragons Graveyard episode in which the kids actually captured Venger, and when faced with the opportunity to slay the devil once and for all, they chose forgiveness and let him go (away with Dungeon Master). THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this video. Never take it down. I briefly remember seeing this as a kid and could only remember the part where the dragon grows it sheds it’s scales and walks out of it. Lol I have one of the books and hope to get the other three. They have a lot more detail and stuff but this cartoon I will always love. It’s a shame a soundtrack was never made. I have this saved in my favorites. Please never delete it or take it down.

My distinct pleasure. Yes, a soundtrack was never made, but.... I did hunt down the person who made the soundtrack, and he dug into his archives, and gave me a copy. I should really put it up here soon.

Oh the magic of the internet. I was just thinking about how I saw the animated version of Dragon's Blood one time when I was 10 years old and here with a couple clicks I found it! I had actually read the book before I saw this show and I was not a fan of how alien the characters were but I did enjoy the show otherwise. I never knew it was a series until a couple years ago, I need to read the rest of the books.

    • @AdrianForte
      @AdrianForte  2 года назад +1

Sort of. You can buy black market DVDs that are just VHS rips that have been "remastered". Sort of. Scrubbing a VHS rip through a de-noise filter is not remastering. But they look "good enough". I haven't done this with Storybreak, but I have bought other videos from these 3rd party sources and they're usually watchable, but nowhere even remotely close to what an official release off the original masters would be like.

I know I'm four years late, but if I could offer you a bit of advice, it would be to never fall into the trap of thinking you're too old to enjoy something. No harm in giving it a try, anyway (assuming you haven't already at this point).

+MrCarter'sRods For a kid's show in the 80's, no, they weren't going to be very worldly, both because of the age of the audience, and the thinking of the people at the time.

+trevor brown The books are set in the far future, on a desert planet called Austar IV, which has a history and climate similar to that of Australia. The planet was originally a place where convicts would be exiled. For many generations the outcasts had adapted to their new environment and even formed a functioning society, focusing on a caste system of paid "bonders" and their debt-holders. Use of the word "slave" only ever comes up in the opening narration, not in the animation itself, or in the books. It's also worth noting that in later books, the two main characters become involved in a rebellion against this practice.
