When Mike announced that he was liquidating a bunch of projects for a "once in a lifetime opportunity" I thought it was a bunch of RUclips drama/clickbait...then he announces an F40. Well done Mike, you are living the dream of every automotive enthusiast in the world, and truly making the opportunity of a lifetime come true.
i think a lot of the bigger channels got big because they are more like "backyard" mechanics, look at goodsquad for example. they started with dirtbikes and jeeps, and now are on to AMG's and and super high end cars. same thing for matt armstrong, matt started out as a bmx rider and doing brake jobs in the parking lot of where he worked... but one thing is certain is they have charisma which goes a LONG way. stanceworks has the charisma but his builds are basically unobtainium. i honestly dont like ferrari's but that 308... sorta got me into them, its the extreme engineering behind that build that pulled me in. hell we watched him make control arms for like 4 weeks lol. its the trial and errors that keep me coming here. the fact he is able to DO an f40 even if its just the panels is super cool. them panels he has prob cost like i'd think at min 80k and max 130k but i could be way off, maybe he got them for 50k and has good budget to work with. i honestly cant WAIT to see the next video
@@AlteredCarbons Mike was just a dude in his backyard though, over a decade ago. He's built his way up to this by putting every dollar he has into the hobby and honestly more energy than a lot of people ever will put into any one thing. That being said having been at Gridlife Laguna and talking to all the other drivers with wild builds, pretty much all of them also just started by slowly modifying their car from the basics and slowly making improvements and connections along the way. Most of them also a decade or so into the hobby. The common denominator between them (and Mike) really is just keeping at the hobby and keeping that motivation up. Mike does it by it being his livelihood and honestly the thing that makes him tick. The other drivers there did it for the love of engineering, or the love of competition, or just to see if they could. Really was a kick in the pants to stop calling builds unobtainable when talking to guys who are racing their family sedans they took their highschool sweetheart to prom in a decade ago against McLarens and winning.
Dude, it's been 2 years? i remember the first 308 video like it was yesterday. Geez, time flies. Glad I was here every step of the way, this project will be awesome.
I love the fact that not only was it far more possible to assemble NOS parts rather than a numbered car, but this strategy also leverages what you learned from the 244; that Ferrari chassis are harder to work with than building your own. This frees you from the need for an original car *and* avoids the controversy of ruining one ;). This will be awesome.
People will most likely give you shit for going tube chassis, but I'd much rather see an insane and """fake""" F40 being driven and enjoyed than an original one sitting in a garage and being driven once a year. Wish you all the best with this amazing project Mike!!

Yeah calling anything "real" without the VIN is kind of making your own definition of "real" in the car world. It's at best a replica, even if it has real F40 parts. All that aside, I'm with you that it's irrelevant, this is still super cool!
Just fyi, 348/355 have the same greenhouse and wheelbase as an f40, though steel mono instead of tube with carbon/kevlar panels. That'd get you a Ferrari vin and floor pan, though...
I was in a Ferrari Dealer’s Collision Center about a decade ago & they had just finished a complete repaint of an F40. It was amazing. Looking forward to the build. Also recommend investing in molds of the originals.
I'm curious about the weave thing. I've seen people saying that originally they had so thin paint that the weave on a original paint shows through. I guess it's pretty impossible to replicate?
@@HulluJanneI think the weave shows because the carbon fiber / Kevlar was never pre preg nor ran through an autoclave. I think they vacuum bagged it in some weird fashion. The weave pattern if placed in a super smooth mold would have a flat finish as the resin would have mirrored the mold surface. It maybe the molds they used weren’t finished flat and smooth so it transferred to the cars parts giving the illusion of thin paint. Carbon parts are smooth if the mold is smooth.
@@FatCatsOfWallStreet BIFB just did some glass moulds for his Lambo, and pulled the parts out early. The resin shrunk around the fabric as it finished curing and the pattern was visible through the primer.

As for it being a 'real tube chassis F40' that does kinda depend on what engine you'll be using. With nothing but the utmost respect for the insane amount of craft and skill that went into the GTK, I do hope that it will be a genuine Ferrari engine in this particular case. Having said that, I'm down for the ride whatever you end up using....
It's encouraging to me that with all the tools and shop space, it takes you a couple of years to still finish a car. I'm sure if you focused on only one project you could go much faster. Point being is that I get dejected with my "relatively" simple restoration and can't move forward. These projects remind me that it "should" take time to finish. I can choose to enjoy the process rather than focus and stress on when or if I will ever finish it. Thanks for the videos.
Exciting! Like others, I would encourage you to take scans/molds of the panels because you know the moment you don't have them you'll need them. I admit that my knee jerk reaction to a couple of the things you said was "why?" And then you said the magic words - its your car, you're going to make it for you. I look forward to seeing how this project plays out over the years.
Writing a comment just for the algorithm. I've been watching for a long time, and the quality of your builds as well as the video production quality is insane, its a miracle to me that you don't have over a million subs. I seriously hope that this build makes you go viral. If this is the type of content you can make with 269k subs I can only imagine the insanity that you can build with 1m+ subs.
Mike, you know the F40 is based off the 288 and the 308 has the same A and B pillars, front windscreen, switchgear pedal box. F40 has Testarossa control arms as well. The F40 chassis is around 6 inches longer than the 308, too! There are schematics online that are super easy to find...just saying. You literally could have c9nverted the 308 into an F40 and it would be street legal and Ferrari badged! Exoctic Designs in Ventura County makes new carbon-kevlar F40 parts. Ebay has lots of body parts and other stuff too...I saw an NOS roof for around 9k...not cheap, but availible
Best decision ever to make it a restomod race car build…restoring to OEM would be painful as you’d basically be ignoring like 30-40yrs of technological advancement…so excited to watch the series
Love the 308 you did!! I'm in for this build!! Have loved Ferrari since I was a kid at 6 years old when Magnum P.I. came out. Then the Testarossa in Miami Vice in 84.
I am absolutely stoked for this build. More than any other build before. Ever. This is going to put every single other build under the table. Not only is it an f40 but we’re going to get to watch as it becomes the baddest f40 ever assembled. I can’t wait to see this come together.
@@emenesu Do you not understand backup plans? If he crashes it's either replica parts or no parts at all. He doesn't have the money to just buy original parts if he crashes. Rather a backup plan than no plan at all.
This is SO fascinating!! I'm not sure whether I should love or hate the effort! One can look at it as them taking panels, that could be used to repair damaged, real, F40's out of circulation.... but on the other hand it's amazing that there body parts/skin pieces that has been sat in storage for a good 30 year finally get used. I'm a bit on the fence myself, but I can't wait to watch the resst of the journey unfold!
Can't lie, every young man in the 90s era had this car on the wall at some point. Love seeing regular guys and shops take on projects of this size. The journey is the destination. Unlike the channels that have an unlimited budget thrown at it to finish a professional level build in 1 month..
Money no object, a F40 in the garage for sure… all time dream car. Subbed on this one Mike, can’t wait for the series to get going. Interested to see the motor choice, a more modern Ferrari v8 with a single turbo conversion would be cool, but an NA screamer wouldn’t be a bad choice either.
Why a single turbo? Making power is not the problem. It will be tremendously laggy. You'd be much better off, sourcing an F430 engine and a used Novitec compressor kit. Alternatively, just have an F430 engine built like a race engine. They make an "easy" 650 hp N/A in race trim.
Absolutely wild Mike. I am a long time fan of the channel and I think I've seen nearly every video you've ever made and I am blown away with the undertaking of such a build. Keep up the great work! Crazy!
Literally my life goal. The f40 has been my favorite car since I was a baby before I even knew it was something special. I've had the poster on my wall since I was like 6.
The car could top 210mi/h, but there aren't many places in the world where this beast can really be opened up. This car doesn't like to charge ahead until you get up above 150m/h.

Setting expectations that there'll be a couple of weeks here and there with no updates/content. Omg, so excited. Submit comment, back to video...but not promising to not pause again and commenting before vid is over. I think this is going to take me a couple of hours to get through. Is this real life? An F40?!!!!
I was planning to do something similar from genuine ferrari parts for the next build🤔 from what I researched the only safe way to do it is to eliminate the badges on the vehicle. I am interested to see what happens with this and ratarossas build and if ferrari respond.
This thing is done with love.. I'm sure Engineer Materazzi and Enzo would be proud, this is the type of content where instead of a cease and desist letter, Ferrari should say something like "hey buddy, we have this V12 collecting dust, we'll send you for free" love from Italy 🇮🇹
Nah man, they're gonna be 2 very different exciting builds. Scott managed to acquire a real 1990 F40 chassis with all the matching number spares from the same chassis, and he's going to convert it to LM spec using OEM parts. There's a video on Eurospares yt channel about it.
Why would he? I'm not really following his channel nor this one, but the build here is in fact going to be a kit car with some original parts, while Ratarossa would be going for the originality to the last bolt. 2 different worlds. Tbh, I don't really get the point of this build and spending crazy money of a few oem shells, for essentially a kit car. Then cutting these NOS parts up, while they could be used for a damaged real F40. In this build it will have zero relevance. But, I wish him all the success on this one and I'm curious how it will turn out to be.

@@baileybrewer1172 Okay. Fair. When talking about quality and reliability, I think it is fairly important to live with the car. Also remember that most of what you hear, is the negative. You rarely see people write reviews or forum posts about how reliable things are. I own everything kind of Ferrari from a 1961 to a hybrid SF90. I can surely agree that older Ferraris are moody creatures. Cars like an F355 for example can have some interesting issues. My 328 which I love to use as a daily driver is rock solid. Build quality is what I like to call funny. This because it does not upset me, it just makes me laugh. But as a driver that runs and drives incredibly well, it is bang on. But let’s talk the modern DCT cars. I am in the category who uses my cars a lot. I put 12k km on a pista Spider in 2 months. My cars drive a lot. Since the DCT cars came out, I have had one car in for major repair. This was my GTC4Lusso. It was in fact a recall. It got a new rear transmission because there was a bad batch of transmissions from Getrag. That’s it. We are talking in the hundreds of thousands km in DCT cars. And my cats often live outside as well. My Lusso was my winter daily. It sat outside from October to April with no trickle charger o. It. My cars only sit on chargers in long term storage. When I rotate them, I drive enough that charging is never an issue. I have had more issues with Porsches and Mercedes than Ferrari. Today I decided to try an Aston DBX as a winter daily. I fear that more than a Ferrari. But we shall see. Times have changed and so has Ferrari clients. Ferrari cannot get away with the reliability of yesterday and they don’t need to. Why build a bad car when not needed? They get more clients if they don’t. They know this.

i think a lot of the bigger channels got big because they are more like "backyard" mechanics, look at goodsquad for example. they started with dirtbikes and jeeps, and now are on to AMG's and and super high end cars. same thing for matt armstrong, matt started out as a bmx rider and doing brake jobs in the parking lot of where he worked... but one thing is certain is they have charisma which goes a LONG way. stanceworks has the charisma but his builds are basically unobtainium. i honestly dont like ferrari's but that 308... sorta got me into them, its the extreme engineering behind that build that pulled me in. hell we watched him make control arms for like 4 weeks lol. its the trial and errors that keep me coming here. the fact he is able to DO an f40 even if its just the panels is super cool. them panels he has prob cost like i'd think at min 80k and max 130k but i could be way off, maybe he got them for 50k and has good budget to work with. i honestly cant WAIT to see the next video

I worked in Santa Cruz in 1999. Coolest thing Ive experienced in auto life was to see an F40 pull up at a stoplight beside me. I was in a Geo Metro so stop light GP wasnt in the cards....I was able to take a photo and still have the Kodak print.
I am SEETHING WITH JEALOUSY! Incredible find, congrats!
Thanks Tony!
Sweet! S/T in the house!!
The weirdest uncanny valley moment when you say "ummm I just got off the phone with -- oh, camera!" like a human, to "...uhHhhHH I JuSt GoT oFf ThE pHOnE WiTh tHe bUyeR oF tHe E30 soOoOOOO" with the weirdest inflection and octave change, suddenly talking like a RUclips Muppet.
So uncomfortable to watch. This is why I can’t get into this channel. Guy is so weird.
I was so excited to watch this video when it popped up on my suggested. And it got even crazier when I realized when you mentioned Rusty, that you were the owner that I use to see cruising on Coastal Highway in Ocean City, Maryland back in the earlier and greater years of H2oi. Really hit me super hard in the feels, I’m so glad to see how far you’ve come in the automotive community and so excited to watch this build and more 🥲❤️
In order for this to be the craziest F40 in the world, you will be required to put a high revving NA V12 with a sequential.
Honestly drivetrain choice is the only fear I have on this build, I know Mike does stellar engineering work but a true F40 deserves a V12
This has been done! Look up Simpson motorsport f40v12.
@@stephenbuffery7205 Yeah everyone knows about that one, especially since it was up for auction recently. But it has a boring 550 V12 tuned up a little. Hardly a modern hi-revving V12. That was was more of just a what if Ferrari had made one. This one has way more opportunity.
@@emptymannull I agree, it is not a ‘modern’ build nowadays but I can assure you, in person it is not boring 😂. Can’t wait to see what’s going to be done with this one !!
While a high rev V12 would be epic, it would be a lot easier (and higher performing) to fit a high rev V8 like out of the 458 and maybe even turbo it. Not only would it be true to the original formula, it would actually be lighter and shorter.
Some friends are buying model cars at 1/8 scale and are happy when it's finished. By passion, I do restore classic cars... But building a car from just panels ! Man, it's great ! No limit. I still remember to have seen when I was a young kid, a big truck with a glass trailer... There was two F40 inside !!! A dream car for sure !
Anybody whining about originality fails to realize that so many Ferraris were, and still are, built with such poor attention to detail.
You’ll build a tube chassis for this and it’ll be 10x better than the original.
How many modern Ferraris have you owned? They are very solid cars now.
@@AB-80X Owned, zero. Been around them for decades and have driven many, as well as tinkered with. I'm by no means an expert, and my comment is my opinion based upon my own experience. It's also not to say I don't love Ferraris, because I do. I have just seen so many instances of obvious "eh, its-a-fine-a" decision making regarding the assembly, while working on F cars.

Okay.
Ratarossa is doing backflips while crying 😂
I doubt that, Ratarossa has a real F40. Not a kit car.
THIS. IS. THE. MOST. EPIC. BUILD.
Mike, I’m so happy for you man
I know you're excited but man I have to say I am so excited to see this!!! Been along for the ride for the 244gtk and almost all of the prior builds / side quest builds.
I really appreciate the style, quality and amount of information ( although sometimes I wish they were more nerdy ) . Keep up the awesome work.
Congratulations on bringing to life most of every kid's dream.
I can't wait for this series!!!!
