I am American of Iraqi Christian Chaldean Catholic lineage. I’m a fluent speaker of the Aramaic language, no reading/writing, in fact I don’t even know the alphabet. Currently, is spoken mostly by the clergy, church choir, etc not of the average person and dangerously close to extinction. Any Christian knows it’s our lord’s spoken language.
I speak the “Chaldean” dialect, Jesus spoke the “Galilee” dialect nevertheless it’s the same exact language, same alphabet (22 letters), same words, same writing, same sentences, grammar, same exact book, text, etc. kinda like an Indian from Kerala Hindi speaker to a North Pakistan Hindi speaker.
Haven’t done much research in this area, my ancestors were the first Christian COMMUNITY in the world, when being a Christian was dangerous business. Yes my ancestors were evangelized by St Thomas himself, then en route to India and fairly sure St Thomas was accompanied by Aramaic speakers of Mesopotamia to spread the faith in India and beyond.
A couple weeks ago, I watched on RUclips a mass in INDIA fully in Aramaic ! Even had an entire choir of young Indian men and women not just speak it, but were singing hymns in Aramaic from a book
! If you’d like to look it up, just input here on RUclips (Chaldeans Aramaic India) and you’ll see plenty, some say up to 2 million Indians are Chaldeans or someway somehow the Aramaic language or something, sounds like a very high number, but again not so high considering India’s population of 1.2 B
It’s the same language spoken by Mel Gibson’s movie (2004) “passions of Christ” superb acting by Jim Caveziel and at the time it was the highest grossing movie ever. The sad part is they were shunned by Hollywood and the actor Caviziel knew he’d never find any acting work b/c of its controversial you know whom that influenced the Roman governor Pilate, there’s to be a sequel to come out in 2024 called the “resurrection”.
Peace ✌️ to all Indians regardless of faith, belief, sect, religion just so as long as it promotes, love, peace, forgiveness, patience, resilience and harmony amongst the masses.

@@tijojoseph3315 I am not speculating. The portugese were expert in creating stories like this. These stories were used to convert people into christianity, read the book by DR Nagaswamy on thirukural. Also, read texts by western travellers who came to india, they never mention arrival of St thomas . ST thomas definately went east but he never came to india. They made up the st thomas theory to show that everything good in south indian culture is taken from christianity while everything bad is from hinduism. Apart from DR nagaswamy you may refer to Rajiv malhotra's book breaking india, on page 88-89-90, you might find convincing answers. Also, if you wish you may read the pages ahead too.

@@toocooltocare1444 If you don't know the culture, history or traditions of Kerala, why do you bother commenting? Yes, there are converts from the times of the Portuguese a few hundred years ago, but the majority of Christians in Kerala follow rites that have origins in the Middle East. There are also (few in number) Anglo-Indians like my fiancée with Portuguese paternal heritage. Kerala was a major trading destination in the past, so this shouldn't be surprising. I'm not saying for a fact that St. Thomas did come to India, but my point is that Christianity in Kerala was practiced in the state before the arrival of the Europeans.

Mylapur santhom church was build on top of original mylapur kapaleeswarar Temple
anyways its fine to follow any beliefs because Hindu culture of this land embrace it unlike any Islamic or Christian nations. However the problem comes when converts starts hate and run anti Hindu missions in our land!

All cooked up like the BIBLE was cooked up.
The main sources relating to Apostle Thomas are two Gnostic (non-Biblical) texts known as the Acts of Thomas and the Gospel of Thomas.
According to them Thomas was the twin brother of Jesus.
For this reason the Thomas myth is not accepted by the Vatican because of a doctrinal problem: Jesus as the Only "Son of God" cannot possibly have a twin brother. (Greek for Thomas is Didymus, which means twin brother.)
In fact, there is no evidence that Thomas even existed. His “history” is full of contradictions.😁😂

Only lord Krishna said I am complete, I create entire creation and enter creation immerge within me. According to the bible, the earth is flat, only two ways after death one permanent heaven and another permanent hell after death, they bury the dead body to preserve it till judgment day who fear and believe Jesus and his father get eternal life with the body they bury. Should have also mentioned the arrival of the Syriac merchants from Mesopotamia and Persia that helped the native Christian community of Kerala to flourish. Knai Thoma who landed in Kodungallur in the 4th or 8th century and Sabrisho who landed in Kollam in the 9th century are major figures in the cultural heritage of the Saint Thomas Christians.
Because both merchants received sassanam or copper plate grants from the Chera Dynasty, the Christians of Kerala were bestowed socio-economic rights that aided in making them a powerful minority community. This economic history of the Nasrani is important towards understanding their formation as community in the socio-cultural landscape of Kerala.

Love this channel! I'm hooked! I realized only now that Ive actually visited all 3 burial places of the apostles you mentioned... I just happened to have been in those places (St. Thomas Mount, Madras; the Vatican; Santiago de Compostela, Spain). I guess inadvertently did some pilgrimages?! A few points after watching this video, in no particular order: There is a mention of St Thomas the Apostle's killing and his burial place in the writings of Marco Polo who visited India in the late 1200s or early 1300s. This is about 200 years before the Portuguese arrived. I think it's worth including when discussing the veracity of the claims of Christianity having arrived here very early on. Second, I've never heard my community being referred to as Thomas Christians. In Malayalam, it's "Nasranis" ('the people of Nazareth') and in English, it's always been "Syrian Christians." It has to do with the hierarchy of the church. The archbishops in Kerala are part of the Syrian Orthodox church, a denomination like the Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, etc. Last, a tiny correction: Armenia is not a European country.

    • @Colistin-hp5sl

      Answer
      1. Thomas didnt speak Hebrew (It was the language of high priests and officials) He spoke Aramaic which was the language of common people. Kerala had jewish settlements from the time of King Solomon that was hundreds of years before Jesus was born and St Thomas initially preached in Muziris , Palayur , Paravur which were all old Jewish settlements ( You can still see Jewish Artefacts still now in these places)
2 Muziris ( Present day Kodungalloor) was a major port since historical times which had trades from middle east which has recordings in many ancient texts and one remarkable one in Marco Polos , since St Thomas knew there was Jewish settlements there he would have thought its easy to preach here.

      Thomas was tasked with converting the Jews. Why should he travel to Mylapore that just conveniently happened to be a Port town controlled by British and Portuguese! {and no story of any travel between Kerala and Tamil nadu land route}

Love your channel and the various stories. I have been having this doubt for quite sometime- will appreciate if you can clarify:
The British are not Catholics - as a matter of fact they were against the Vatican pope for a long time. British ruled large parts of India. But then how come Catholics have a larger spread in India than any other church? Especially all their seminaries and schools... how did that happen?
Thank you and keep up your great work!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    • @StorytrailsChannel
      @StorytrailsChannel  3 года назад +31

Thank you :) And that is a good question. The British were the dominant colonial power in India, but not the dominant religious influence. The British East India Company’s focus was to make profits from the colony, not spread religion. They felt that religious activity would dilute their focus. They actively dissuaded British evangelists from visiting India. Till the Wesley Methodist Church movement and the Charter Act 1813, British Anglican missionary activity did not really exist in India.
However, Catholicism in India predated the British. The Portuguese who came to India in the 1490s were aggressive in forcing conversions to Catholicism. (You could read the history of Portuguese Inquisition). The French who had some colonies in India also encouraged Catholicism. In addition, there were many freelance Catholic missionaries from European countries who evangelised in native Indian and British territories. Josef Constanzo Beschi, an Italian Jesuit and Fr. Ephrem de Nevers, a French Catholic priest , are two names that come to mind.
We do not have an exact figure, but it is estimated that at least half of the Indian Christians are Catholic.

Excellent coverage of the likelihood of Thomas’ travel, and the certainty that Christianity has been in South India for nearly 2000 years.
One thing to clarify: Paul was in Rome, Italy, after traveling a few times through Turkey, Greece, Crete, and Cyprus. This is documented in Scripture in the Acts of the Apostles. So while it wasn’t the major religion in any one country till Armenia as you say, Christian’s were in Europe by 50s CE. the Ethiopian Eunuch is also converted & returned home before Paul was in Rome, So Africa also had Christians before Europe. South Indian Christians were never the majority religion, but they were a recognized, sizable minority in what is now Kerala and Tamil Nadu states for 2000 years now.

According to the bible, the earth is flat, only two ways after death one permanent heaven and another permanent hell after death, they bury the dead body to preserve it till judgment day who fear and believe Jesus and his father get eternal life with the body they bury. For all the ones who have this question that how the language barrier is compensated for his preaching, I think my response would do good.
It is going to be difficult to comprehend.... But its reference is in the bible... I think you know that we believe in the Holy Spirit, the spirit of God. When that Spirit of God rules over our body, the gift or varam called 'multiple tongues' can be claimed. This incident was first recorded in the bible, where it says when all followers of Jesus Christ gathered in an upper floor of a home. The Holy Spirit rested upon them, and they started speaking in 'multiple tongues'. When the passerby noticed noise coming from the upper floor of a house, they thought that people in that floor are drinking and partying, but then when they paid attention to what they were saying, they were surprised to hear their language. They said, "how come these Galileans know and speak our language. They are speaking things, and we all are hearing it in our own language". This is how it is believed to have happened with Thomas too with Indians here.
This is the gift called 'multiple tongues'. It is believed that this is one among the 7 gifts that Spirit of God will give to his people who does what Jesus commanded to do, I.e, to spread the gospel about Jesus Christ, which is about his birth and reason, death and resurrection, and the most importantly HIS SECOND COMING.
I hope I did justice to your question. Thank you. God loves you all.

The New Testament came into existence only in the fourth century, after the Council of Nicaea called by Roman Emperor Constantine in 325 AD.
The first Christians came to India with the Syrian merchant Thomas Cananeus in 345 AD escaping persecution in Persia.
It was not Apostle Thomas but a merchant called Thomas Cananeus.
The authors of the Bible made "Barnasha" a martyr & gave him a name "Jesus" & FOOLED the world.
After that calling a merchant "Thomas Cananeus" as "Apostle Thomas" is just a piece of cake.
Christians must stop calling a merchant as Apostle. You shouldn't be so STUPID & INSANE to believe that.

#And about the Syrian merchant thingy...there are evidence from various elite research centers which tells us about the existence of christians in India in the first century...moreover Thomas Cananeus brought communities from Mesopotamia and the community is now known as 'cananaya community'...but what annoys me is that u bring up facts to falsify other facts. WHAT A BLUNDER!!!!!
      # BARNASHA in Aramic means 'son of man'. Jesus referred to him as 'son of man' and he spoke Aramaic

There was spice trade even during Roman period and when there's trade, there's translators. You can either pay them or slave them or befriend them. Multiple ways. For trade a common language is always required and it changed according to popularity. Today it is English, before it was persian and even before it was Greek etc. So simply they might have found a local translator for aramic to Malayalam or some random merchant who can speak the local Malayalam during that time.

What a narrow-minded belief people are following without knowing it. People's emotions and faith are misguided by low spiritual practices in Christianity.

This if I remember correctly was written in Tamil vattezhuthu, before Malayalam formed in the 13th century. That could settle a lot of dust that Christianity was in India before the Portuguese. Also the church in Piravom in Ernakulam district of Kerala, has a legend that the Magi visited the place after visiting the infant Jesus in the manger, aptly named as the Three king's church. A humble request to the researchers here. Would be happy to know the truth!

A comprehensive balanced discussion especially in light of the ongoing debates around the historical accuracy of the apostolic age. I would however question the conclusion drawn on the Christianisation of Armenia and early Christians in India. Armenia was the first country in the world to make Christianity a state religion in the 4th century CE. But that doesn’t mean Christianity only came to Armenia in the 4th century CE. Christianity was also trickling through the Mediterranean countries in the first century and it took time to build a significant mass before these countries became fully/mostly Christian. In India while christianity was purported to have been introduced around the same time it did not became a state religion.

This is why certain Christians in kerala called syro malabar church. Syro means syria, malabar means kerala. Later when Portuguese came they tried make these Christians to Catholic church. Either by force or by preaching. This lead to conflict. Some remained in Orthodox control of Anthiyoke. Some converted Catholics who is controled by Pope in rome. Do some research before you come here & talk nonsense like thousands of Kerala Christians, who have NO CLUE of history.
St. Thomas if he had visited could not have preached Christianity in 52 AD because Christianity and the New Testament came into existence only in the fourth century, after the Council of Nicaea called by Roman Emperor Constantine in 325 AD.

Jews never forget their roots & their extended family members. The Jews who were traders in the south of India who settled a long time, as early as 2500BC, in today's Kerala, is the proof of the birth of Christianity early on. Jews synagogues & burial sites are still in Cochin. Hope we preserve it. One of the disciples who was St. Thomas, a jew, had traveled from jerusalem to convince those Jews (brown Jews) who lived in Cochin and nearby places to adopt faith in Christ. Those converted became the first Christian group, whom we today call Syrian Christians or Nazarani Christians. Later, more traders from Mesopotamia, Greece, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Persia who came to Malabar to carry out trade with the Middle East, Rome and Africa settled in this part. They married and settled, married local people and thus became the first Christian society. This is why they still, Syrian Christians, use Syriac (Aramaic in prayers) & hold relations with Middle Eastern churches, churches in Greece, Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, and Damascus. This group was later split by the Portuguese (Syro Malabar, 1655 & Chaldean (mesapotamia/Iraq) Syrian Christians (Syrian Christians/Nazarani/Jacobites)), and the English (Marthomite, 1890). The further split happened for various reasons - Pentecost, Malankara catholic (1930), and Jacobite (1975). The years given are approximate, not exact. The root Christian group is currently known as the Malankara Orthodox Church. Forgot, another notable group that came and settled in was Kananites, later known as the knanaya christians.
