It's a hard world to get a break in
All the good things have been taken
But girl there are ways to make certain things pay
Though I'm dressed in these rags, I'll wear sable some day
Hear what I say
I'm gonna ride the serpent
No more time spent sweatin' rent
Hear my command
It ain't no use, I'm breakin' loose,
Holdin' me down, stick around
But baby (baby)
Remember (remember)
It's my life and I'll do what I want
It's my mind and I'll think what I want
Show me I'm wrong, hurt me sometime
But some day I'll treat you real fine
There'll be women and their fortunes
Who just want to mother orphans
Are you gonna cry
When I'm squeezing them dry?
Taking all I can get
No regrets
When I ... openly lie
And live on their money
Believe me honey, that money
Can you believe, I ain't no saint
No complaints
So girl go out
Any doubt
And baby (baby)
Remember (remember)
It's my life and I'll do what I want
It's my mind and I'll think what I want
Show me I'm wrong, hurt me sometime
But some day I'll treat you real fine
(It's my life and I'll do what I want) Don't push me
(It's my mind and I'll think what I want) It's my life
(It's my life and I'll do what I want) And I can do what I want
(It's my mind and I'll think what I want) You can't tell me

Eric's voice was a gift and he put all his heart and soul behind it

@@j.masonmedia Yes, Mason. It is either 1964..or 1965.
y'know, it's weird how much everyone remembers the stones and the beatles. why aren't the animals remembered in the same regard? they were pretty damn good!
spencer me only a handful of hits ( compared to handfuls?) and they didn’t write their own songs!
Epic band though!! I have their best of and love it thoroughly! Nothing wrong with not being as good as the Beatles or Stones
They are by us with fine taste!!
So what? The guy could deliver a song like no one else, and so darkly.
spencer me Amen!
One of the best original blues rock band. Their music with the incomparable Eric Burdon still stands up. Great band.
💯
Exactly. Couldn't have stated better.
This guy is one of the ALL TIME greatest SOLO singers - the soulful drama in this voice is - off the charts!
Like Franky Valli, Van Morrisson, Sam Cooke, Steve Perry, and of course, Lou Gramm.
A very underrated singer in my opinion! Love how he sings!
A lot of people think he's a great singer. Good voice. But he hasn't been heard from since 1980 or so.
paul harris That's too bad! He had a very unique voice and style.
paul harris, I saw them in the mid 1980s.
paul harris Uh, no, idiot. Eric Burdon's been putting out albums forever, even though his voice is shot. Why in the world would you, someone who knows absolutely nothing about the subject, write authoritative posts on the subject as though you do? Get lost.
EmceeNolan Absolutely nothing? Ok, he's been making records but nobody ever mentions them except you so he might as well be singing in the shower.
Eric Burdon's shouting and roaring voice sounds very appealing and philosophic. He is a great and wonderful singer but I think he is kinda underrated. He is one of my favorite singers.
I see comment like this in the other the animals video. sure he can sing, bur if he don't get any further famous that was market
+Jeri Faris Labib As you told, I left some similar comments in several the Animals' clips. It means that I have a crush on this group and especially, its singer, Eric Burdon. But they had several other covers like "The house of the rising sun", "Don't let me be misunderstood" and "Bring it on home to me" and their popularity came mainly from such covers. Of course, they produced their own stuffs, "I'm crying", "We Gotta Get Out of this Place" including this song. Moreover, the original line-up was split up too early. Eric Burdon formed Eric Burdon and the Animals with a new line-up later. They released "when I was young". But they failed to transport as much popularity as thought. That's the way the market trend was at that time. In spite of my subjective and arbitrary opinion, his voice deserves to have so much more than he actually does at least.

it's so strange to think this video was uploaded when I was a child in 2007 which to me feels like a lifetime ago, yet the day it was uploaded, the song was already over 40 years old which is longer than I've been alive. My mind simply can't comprehend how long ago the sixties was, yet whenever i listen to these songs they still sound so fresh, so modern, so original. idk if it's just me or if the songs were just that excellently crafted, maybe a mix of both, either way, i do hope this music never dies. it's a genuine miracle that the internet exists and we can access all these songs literally in the palm of our hands

The animals had the music of the own and they made it their their own!
Eric Burdon...one of the all time greats. Summer of '66, I drove my red Mustang fastback to a concert in upstate NY. The opening number was "Don't Bring Me Down".
On the opening power chord, a gigantic speaker mounted 20 feet above the stage exploded. I kid you not. After a 30 minute delay, the band came back on, and this time the speaker held up. Eric Burdon continued through a 90 minute set, and, I tell you, he was the real deal. They did virtually every song in their record catalog, and more.
crazy :D
O my... that' s epic, i wish to have been here
Mega
from where did you drive your Mustang to Upstate NY? Thanks for sharing your memory. Reminds me of when I was asked to choose a song during a group psychotherapy session. Each torture victim chose a song for the counselor to play. The counselor loaded my song, then foolishly walked away from the player. The opening banging bars of "Crazy Train" song by Ozzy Osbourne nearly knocked my unknowing counselor off the floor as he walked towards me away from the speakers with his back facing the player. Made my day. At least I laughed.
Hope you kept the mustang
Born in 1950, I am so grateful I was able to enjoy the Animals, The Who, Dave Clark 5 and the Beatles, My favorite Group then was The Who, but listening to the Animal's songs now....Its the Animals. Eric Burton is an awesome vocalist. The first song I learned to play on my guitar was The House of the Rising Sun.
Eric's not just an "Animal" -- he's pure BEAST!
When "The Boss"- (Springsteen) says Eric Burdon had a tremendous influence on him in his youth thru his range and devotion - the Animals were truly a treasure!!!
The Animals are one of the best groups of the 1960s. One of the most underrated bands ever, but if it were not for The Beatles and The Stones, they would have been regarded as either one of them.
They were on their way to becoming another Beatles but they split up, I’d they didn’t they’d probably be in the top 5 bands ever
Amen! I totally agree! There were so many great bands from England at that time. Part of the British invasion! You don't hear music like this anymore!
So much better than the Beatles
@@nicholasyoder They make the Beatles of the time look a decade out of date!!
@@lechatel You're insane. The Beatles left them in the dust.
I met Eric in Person in 1981 Great Dude ! And musician 🙏😇
Lucky you! ❤
You were blessed!
I was 11 when this aired. I was 25 when I collected all the Animals songs. I'm 65 now and have never gotten tired of these classic songs that have endured.
What a band! Just heard we lost Hilton Valentine rhe lesd guitarist. My condolences to his family. There will never be a more intimidating sound and feel alive music. Loved them in the 60's and love them now. Please turn on the younger generation to this band. They should never be forgotten. They will not if anyone listens.
Wise Words
Relax, I am in my 20’s and was raised on this. I’ll raise my kids on this. Good music is timeless.
I will sleep well tonight. Thank you for your reply.
You’re sad the music will die, I’m in my 20s… I’m more sad our older generation is going out. We can keep the recordings; we can’t replace the people.
@@idontcare2851 I’m 24 and I been an “Animal” for the last 6 years! Trust me history repeats itself! All it takes is a famous Instagram influencer or celebrity to have their picture taken wearing a shirt with the band on it for millions to google and listen to their music just because their favorite celebrity is doing it lol so good music will live forever! Whether it be for the right reasons or not!
Eric's voice is SOULFUL. The band is extremely talented.
Goddamn! That bass line and the guitar riff over it. So dark and so damn good.
YEP--Fantastic bass line, it makes the whole song unique, plus a strong dominant Lead.---My equal to ---rising Sun'.
You meant to say 'the best', but no ones an expert.
8 in 1968 I remember singing along while mom drove, AM radio, standing on the front seat, I always thought Eric had the best rock voice. Thank you.
damn i love his strong voice. like at the last 30 seconds... he's so naturally powerful. he's not forcing it like others do. eric is aaaaamazing!
Eric Burdon is one of THE BEST of all time. Never wasted a lyric. And the music stands to this day. Legendary status!
This group is great. Creative as hell, and not anything anyone heard before. Love the trophy girls on the wall touch.
Eric Burdon was all original. No remakes. He was a different species.
Agree
Completely agree
Couldn't be , never was , imitated
Not from earth...
True
He comes from a British working-class background, and so many songs have the theme of getting out of that treadmill existence, and of gaining freedom from that rigid fifties mentality of what was and wasn't acceptable. (hence the title of the song, and also "We Gotta Get Out of this Place")....a common theme then in rock, and among us kids, too. Oh, boy, it was a fun time.
Carrie Berry I bet it was! All our own times were special. I hope yours was more fulfilled than mine 😊
It was our favourite song when we were on a search an destroy mission
Shame they didn’t write those songs your on about though.......
thank you for the history explanation. raise your hand if today you do not have financial debt in one form or another! lol
and raise your hand if you don't expect to encounter potential financial debt in the future due to unforeseen circumstances
They were even badder bad boys than the Rolling Stones, and that's going some!!! Eric Burdon has one of the best, edgiest voices in rock!!

Hilton Valentine also had a Futurama and Gretch Tennessean just like George Harrison. The Gretch was used on House of the Rising Sun and the Vox he owned was a 12 string Brian Jones' Vox was a six string if I remember right, but had the same teardrop shape. He is playing a Rickenbacker in this video.. Hilton has a web site telling about the equipment he has used though his career.
***** He is using a Rickenbacker 330 for sure :)

the Stones weren't bad as most people think, the Beatles were more bad boys as the Stones, Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead (R.I.P) said this.

True Willow, we heard a lot about his fights and antics back in the swinging 60's.
I love Erik and his animals.
This is, however, the creepiest set decor I am aware of to this very day.
I agree, notches on the bedpost should suffice.
The great song itself had some pretty creepy lyrics.
"There'll be women and their fortunes
Who just want to mother orphans
Are you gonna cry
When I'm squeezing them dry?
Taking all I can get
No regrets
When I openly lie, ha
And live on their money
Believe me, honey

Eric Burdon
he was instrumental in bringing Jimi Hendrix back to US
Eric Burdon, oohhh, my goodness beautiful talented man what a voice!! I love The Animals a blast from the past!! 😊🩷🤘✌️
No matter how you feel when you hear Eric Burdon sing his music you always feel a lot better
One of the most underrated singers out there. Sure, you hear about Jagger, Lennon and McCartney but Eric Burdon's voice tops them all. (Jagger has the best stage presence of course!) Why can't they make music like this anymore? People with real raw talent. At this point, it didn't matter how they looked or how marketable they were, it was about talent, ability and most importantly the music. I wish we could go back to simpler times. It seems like music was so much fun back then instead of the insanity it has become. Sorry to preach. It just came out.
The music industry destroyed music
Slim, your remark put tears in the back of my eyes.

Excellent song.
For those of you lamenting the demise of music, we have Anton Newcomb of The Brian Jonestown Massacre carrying the torch of great music

It’s 2023 and I heard this on one of the classic radio channels on XM and I thought I wonder what they look like I was just picturing this Rowdy Rebel looking dude, singing the song and of course I forgot about the suits and everything back in the day, I thought it was such a good video to watch for the talent he

I have listened to this song for almost 50 years now and it never gets old. Along w/ gotta get out of this place, don't let me be misunderstood. Just great music that has passed the test of time, will always sound like it did the first time.
You are so right Vic. 50 yrs. later & its still a great song. Don't forget their all time classic.....House of the rising sun..........

Yeah, yet another great song by the Animals . Quite possibly one of the most underrated Bands . Plus they had Chas Chandler playing Bass . The guy Who brought a young Jimi Hendrix to London.
The animals had a great sound I believe the UK was the centre of the music world at that time
just a _tiny_ bit of influence on The Doors haha.

C'est la vérité !
@Chief BigToke
Not gonna happen, ever again, the UK is fundamentally different, the entire English culture is basically dead in the water, the Scottish rebelliousness is no more and the same goes for the Irish.

One of the best songs ever written. Nobody but Eric Burdon and the Animals could have made this so popular back in the day. I saw them at a teen club when they were just hitting the states. Eric was still singing as far as know and he can still belt them out.
Good times. 😎 Thank you. Sweet Trophies on the wall.
A time when youth never thought of ever getting old.
Perfectly said.
We all thought we would live forever. Then life took over and we realized that we couldn’t, but it’s been a long fun ride

Bellos tiempos los 60s que estos ritmos eran lo mejor bella voz Erik y talento al natural The Animals 😚🎶🤝desde Cd de Mexico 🇲🇽
Something so often missed... was that this sound, this musical style, was SO VERY NEW. These bands were laying down the paving stones for bands to come. And some pathways could just never be repeated. The Animals were such a creative, original group. I only wish they'd held up longer, added more music to their archive for all time.
I love these Animals and Eric Burdon! Just great music!

And sweet bod, WOW 🔥🔥🔥😋🥰❣️
RIP the two members of The Animals
Chas Chandler (December 18, 1938 - July 17, 1996), aged 57

Eric’s command of this song with his singing voice is just amazing
Adored his voice then and now. Never the Beatles for me. These fellas deserved MORE
Eric is such a good singer and he's really good looking as well!
Yes he is ☺️
The Animals have been and always will be on of the most highly rated music groups of all time. When they came on the scene we loved them as much as The Beatles and Rolling Stones. This song is one of their best; dynamic, soulful and cool with great changes, lyrics and delivery.

Recently sang this song by them, at a bar, this past weekend. It was a group of 20-something’s and received an applause like the one at the end of this video. There is hope for humanity! Need more songs like this for everyone to hear now-a-days. And I’ll oblige to this challenge, just need to find bandmates first lol
Great tune that captured raw blues and British Invasion qualities together. Eric Burdon had a unique voice, gutsy.
He's still jammin and still good. Seen him in the Poconos several years ago.He was 74 then and still could belt it out !!

Well said!
Agree with you all! 👍🏴
Incredible musician, lyricist, and singer. One of the founders of Rock and Roll. Then continued with War . Thank you, Eric.
That pre-chorus section is no man's land if you get lost and aren't counting. The bottom drops out and you're in free fall. No edits back then. One take and no mistakes. Oh!, well. No worries! He's Eric Burdon. Never a dull moment. My hero! Rock on, big guy!
Saw him tonight. His band did come in too early on this song for the chorus. He recovered like a pro. Still sounds amazing after all these years
@@spellbounddj4758 Actually, it's just the opposite. If you know the song, you'll know that Eric dragged out his phrasing too long, and thus was not in the right spot when Chas and Dave came in (properly) with the backing vocals.
The perils of singing live to a pre-recorded backing track! Eric sometimes had trouble with this. Years ago, I heard a TV performance of "Don't Bring Me Down" that is much more dire than this. Eric gets totally lost...his vocals and the backing track are out of synch through half of the performance.
None of this in any way diminishes the greatness of the recorded version of this song, or the great ones on either side of it ("We Gotta Get Out of This Place" and "Don't Bring Me Down"). Three of the most intense and powerful records of the 1960s; they'll live forever. (Honorable mention, too, to the great "Inside - Looking Out.")
Awesome intro, and Eric Burdon's brilliant voice make this a real rocker. Sheer excellence!
The Animals were a great 60s classic, unique and mind blowing!!

Unreal, isn't it? Where has the time gone?
Eric Burdon and the Animals. The original "punk rockers." I used to love listening to them and they had a real long string of hit songs in the 60s. That attitude that they had, that in your face kind of demeanor, we all shared that in those days. We questioned everybody about everything. We didn't take anything for granted after we saw what the politicians and businesses were doing. We didn't trust them. We got the answers we were looking for and started trying to do things better.
I wondered if anyone still listened to these great guys. Glad to see someone is. : )
Still love listening to this. ♥️
Every evening.
Thank you, so much for providing this.
