This song was never written. It's a folk song, pure oral tradition passed down for generations before it even got to this recording. It's that development, being reinterpreted by multiple artists, that makes it so powerful. It's universality.

This really stood out during the early days of the British Invasion of the mid 1960s. An instant classic and one of the most powerful rock recordings of all time with a true blues treatment bolstered by Alan Price's swirling organ playing and Eric Burdon's raw and wild vocal delivery not to mention the opening by guitarist Hilton Valentine.

Wow....your words....the way you worded how explain this song, the words, how they played this....the vocals.....the insane musician capability of the band......gah!!!!!!
@gaydolfshitler739yeah, but it is still Eric Burdon, Ray Price and the Animals. They choreographed a nice little skit and dressed up them Animals to make the raw, savage power, pain and lament of the song appear civilized.

Absolutely. I grew up on this song as I'm sure you have. Yet, as I've gotten older and have struggled through addiction, I can relate to its lyrics and mood on such an unbelievably deeper level than I'd ever imagined. Just yesterday, I was having bad cravings, and the line "I got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train. I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain" kept replaying in my head. I don't want to "go back to New Orleans". Today, I did not relapse. ❤ I think that the music that forms the soundtrack of your life has a profound effect on your choices, your emotions, and your ability to connect and relate.

One of the best songs written and recorded in the history of music
This really stood out during the early days of the British Invasion of the mid 1960s. An instant classic and one of the most powerful rock recordings of all time with a true blues treatment bolstered by Alan Price's swirling organ playing and Eric Burdon's raw and wild vocal delivery not to mention the opening by guitarist Hilton Valentine.
