The Animals from Newcastle England, great group. I got into these guys 20 years after their fame started. The who, the animals, the Beatles, small faces, the kinks, the spencer Davis group, the Rolling Stones. All really good British bands from this time.
Chas Chandler of The Animals also deserves credit for discovering Jimi Hendrix. Animals were on tour in US, Chandler met Hendrix, who was an unknown hanging out in New York, and brought him to England, set him up with a band, and let him loose in the recording studio. The rest is history. The Animals are great in their own right -- much greater than they're currently given credit for. Eric Burdon had one of the great male rock voices of the sixties. Their music had much tougher edge than the Beatles' and many other Brit groups of the time.
Actually, before that, Les Paul discovered him playing at a small night club in NY, but he only stayed for a few minutes before having to leave in order to go to an important meeting or something. By the time he got back, he asked the bartender who the guy was, and he said something to the effect of "Why do you care? We kicked him out two hours ago because he wasn't that good and starting to play some really weird stuff on his guitar." He asked his manager to find this left handed guitar player from NY and bring him to him, but a week later he got a call. "That left handed guitar player you wanted me to look for just died in a house fire." Then, he saw Jimi on TV, called up that manager and said "You remember how a couple years back I wanted you to look for a left handed guitar player from NY?" "Yeah, he died in a house fire." "Well, you're fired because his name's Jimi Hendrix and he's on TV right now."
Great story, CPD0123, it sounds like Les Paul's manager was probably just trying to get out of really finding Jimi. A less diplomatic manager could have told Les, "find him yourself, I book jobs for you, I'm not your talent scout." :)
I have the story from Al Kooper's wonderful autobiography. Al Kooper is not always a great guy (and doesn't present himself as a great guy), but he writes well and his book is mine of info on music from early 60s into mid 70s when Kooper's star faded.

For fucks sakes, Eric Burdon looks and sounds sooo fucking hottt! His voice and the way he kinda keeps his mouth towards one side when he sings is just tooo much for me!!
From what l have read, Eric had a battle with the music industry, and probably as a result of his dissolution, was not the easiest person to work with during his drug/alcohol period of life.
The Ed Sullivan Show. Did anyone realize the impact this music was having on the youth of America at this time? Before DVD's, video tapes, RUclips. This is where us "young uns" received our first real dose of this completely radical music. This is the music that defined an entire generation. And the old square himself, Ed Sullivan, right in the middle of it.
+Rory Gallagherfan Ed certainly did. He ruled his stage and hated gyrating and screaming but he's a business man and knew he had to get the hottest acts of the day. Beatles, Stones, Eric Burdon, Animals...James Brown. Ed very rarely invited anyone over to shake his hand but he did just that after a great performance by James Brown. Ed acted like a little kid. So great. Ed was one of a kind. I dont remember if Ed ever had Jimi Hendrix on, but if he didnt it wasnt for a lack of trying. Jimi was so hot then after Moterey Pop in 1967. I did see Jimi on the Dick Cavett show a few times.

Interesting opening, introducing the Beatles. The Animals at that time were so much edgier than the Beatles, even edgier than the Stones. This band really spoke to young working class youths in both the UK and the USA. They made great meaningful music.

danie garcia You guys just never were in a place you had to get out of. Were never inside looking out. Perhaps you have never been misunderstood. I'm sure your intentions are good, though.
OK, can't see it anywhere on the comments page so looks like it'll be me who'll write this little factoid. The guy on the left playing bass is Chas Chandler. And a couple of years after this he spotted a black guy playing guitar in a club and thought he was great. He brought the guy to the UK and Jimi Hendrix started his rise to the top.
The thing with 60's bands. The records were basically cut live in one or two takes in the studio, so what you heard on record is what the band really sounded like. No overdubs and trickery. Pure blood and sweat. The Animals had serious chops!
I think your very wrong. Look on RUclips about the “ wrecking crew”. They sat in an created the sound that you think is distinct to a group. Like The Beach Boys. That is pure wrecking crew. For years if they didn’t sit in you didn’t have a hit. Then they would spend time with the band helping them learn what to play and adapt the sound to their skills. Many later names you know came from the wrecking crew. Glen Campbell, his guitar skills well know from his time as a member of the wrecking crew. I think what you said is more fantasy then truth. Wall of sound developed in the 60 took many takes and over dubs to create.

1 question. Why are the Beatles talking at the beginning to an Animals video? That's a little odd. They're names were Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums), and Bryan "Chas" Chandler (bass). I don't want the video to cause people to get those two bands confused with eachother. I'm not trying to be a smart a$$ here. I can see how one could make that mistake. They do look a little Beatles-ish. But if you were to look it up on wikipedia, you would see that they are different bands. Wikipedia The Animals: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Animals Wikipedia The Beatles: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles:_Rock_Band
***** Really? Oops. My mistake. Just thought it could confuse people who don't know these bands very well. After all, not everyone who happens to find this video will watch other videos on this channel also. But I didn't mean to put anyone down. Sorry if anyone took my comment as smarmy or self-indulgent.
I still cannot believe that that voice came out of the body of a man so young. Eric is one of the greatest singer, period. Damn, Eric was handsome and sexy!!! LAWD. Oh, this is a great song by a great band.
No, the creator didn’t goof. That intro is the same for every one of her items. It’s just another group from the time (saying what instruments they play). I like it!
The song was originally written for Nina Simone, who released it on her album, Broadway-Blues-Ballads in November 1964. The Animals later included "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" in September 1965 on the US release of their album, Animals Tracks
The looks on Eric's face at the start of this performance are incredible. In them I see the eyes of a man whose years of hard work along with his band members has finally come to fruition. Spectacular performance all the way around. Their organ player, particularly in the House of Rising Sun, was incredible.
Eric Burdon is amazing. Sometimes it's hard to remember that he was only a teenager when this was made. He is still singing and rocking hard here in So Cal. I think Joseph Gordon Levitt should play him in a movie!
Imagine, talent, poise, ability, stage presence and true performers. Don't need people on wires hanging about or fire or explosions.............cause they can play and sing. Don't know where all that talent came from in one decade,
"The House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals played a critical role as the base camp of British artists' invasion into America. In my purely subjective opinion, they are no less legendary than Beatles. But this group was split up so early. What if they had lasted longer and released more good songs!
+Stari Skye Moralez Yes, ur absoultely right. Why don't l know it! "The House of the Rising Sun" is an only mouth-to-mouth, veiled and mysterious American taditional folk song which nobody knows originates from where and who wrote, either. Most people just speculate that it symbolizes a whorehouse. But the bottom line is that of all versions, ironically, the British band, Animal's cover edited by the keyboardist, Alan Price is the most famous and the best smash hit in the world, what's more, their cover was the most critical bridge for British invasion to America so that so many British musicians could cross it to America
Best love song ever . I have to share. I was a child that grew up in the early 70s with his father playing the animals, the doors, the Beatles, the stones, cream, so many awesome music that got recorded in my little mind. I tell my dad frequently thanks! I know these songs word for word. And I mean every Beatles song they recorded is engrained in my memory for all time.. thanks dad!
I knew Hilton when I was living in London during the 70s. He chanted Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo along with the same Buddhist group as me. Sandy Shaw, Tina Turner, Boy George and Orlando Bloom, along with so many others also chant. Hilton was a kind and gentle guy and I'm confident that he has gone to his real home now, the same magnificent and colourful Light that I visited during 1970 and during a near-death experience (NDE). I'm certain that Hilton's enjoying the best time of his life there. Thanks for the music and your kind friendship mate :)
Love this and their other songs too. When I was in a college rock band back in late 60s, we would play many of them - I thankfully was not the vocalist, but tried hard to emulate Alan Price, the organist, who also was great. Eric Burdon is my best blues singer. Thanks for this video.
@James Maher Despised? Like Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brian, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Myers......? Although he probably would be disliked for insisting on actual live performance, in an era when "live" has become so dependent on backing tracks, samples, and sequences that it isn't too different from karaoke.
Ed Sullivan - God bless this man. He presented some of the best live performances, and fortunately for us they were preserved for posterity. I love watching Eric's expresions; they add so much to the song. Wish I were able to ask him his thoughts about this video.

Google says: The Animals appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show six times. For their second appearance on January 24, 1965 The Animals performed “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” These early shows recorded some of The Animals best performances as they energetically charged the audience. Although Burdon’s singing was emotionally raw, he came off as shy and somewhat awkward.
Baby, do you understand me now? If sometimes I feel a little mad But don't you know that no one alive can always be an angel When things go wrong I feel real bad. I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree With a joy that's hard to hide And sometimes it seems that, all I have to do is worry And then you're bound to see my other side I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood If I get edgy, I want you to know, That I never mean to take it out on you Life has its problems, and I get my share, And that's one thing I never mean to do Cause I love you, Oh, Oh, oh, oh, baby - don't you know I'm human I have thoughts like any other one Sometimes I find myself, Lord, regretting Some foolish thing, some little simple thing I've done I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood Yes, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood Yes, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood Yes, I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
I saw him a few years back at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock. I was so worried he was gonna be a has been. He was GREAT. Voice perfect. He even tolerated the entire audience singing along to all the oldies because it was about LOVE!
This was the time period when Rock started Really Rockin ! Early Beatles was pretty lame imo, they got ALOT better after getting into LSD but The Animals really had that certain edge and needed no time to ripen and mature. The Stones were quite good early on though. But they too got quite a bit better over a bit of time as well.
Zach Nispel Nah,i Really dont think so with "The Animals". The LSD explosion pretty much Really started in 1967,or maybe late 1966. "The Animals" just didnt have that special type enhanced LSD creative based vibe like "The Beatles" began to really exhibit in 1967,along with other groups at that time. "The Animals" were too much straight forward in they're style,at least from my own listening ear's perspective. They Really knew how to make the most of they're relatively simplistic musical approach though. Bourdan's vocal style was obviously very unique and ground-breaking. They were basically Really Cool(For any time period/timeless) with passionately rough-tough matter of fact sounding vocals. They were definately a no-nonsense bad-ass approach to rock music.
Amazing! You feel that the sound's filling up your soul's spaces completely also you are having a limitless pleasure from mix of instrumental and vocals, there is no needless solos or anything wasted. Taste it with your mental and physical body.

I saw the Animals live back in the day and, boy, I thought he was homely. Now I look at him, a young 20s guy, and I can see the animal magnetism he had.

The Animals on the Ed Sullivan Show, who would believe this except those of us who sat in front of our black & white televisions and heard this, some of us for the first time! Love the The Animals and Eric Burdon in all their incarnations.
But they still made it work. Beauty isn't always perfection and to be honest without the internet it's hard to learn a instrument properly without a teacher.
Disagree, although there are many the usa leads by far. Just a few, the grateful dead, almand brothers, skynyrd, Stevie ray vaugh, bob dylan, marshall tucker, charlie daniels, grand fuck railroad, chicago, dave mathews, pearl jam, nirvana, etc etc etc
What? Surely I can't have written those comments 11 years ago? Mind you, my taste in music hasn't changed. Still love this to this day. Always remember Eric Burdon say, however old he was, that he "could always conjure up the voice".
This sullen, East End(er) (strictly guessing) represented the antithesis of The Beatles or Herman's Hermits or Dave Clark Five. Unlike their squeaky clean rivals, these Animals (in large part driven by Eric's vocals) along with the Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Zombies seemed to be driven by an anger, an urgency and a very obvious sexual overtone. They were the Fagin kid gang (from Oliver) all grown up ... in 20th Century London. They were all a large part of my sexual awakening as a young girl... Even now hearing them makes me realize how exciting, scary and curious a time it was for me.....
***** My dad who loved classical and big band sounds and crooners and especially Andy Williams, Nat King Cole etc. Also Loved House of the Rising Sun by the Animals and Whiter shade of Pale by Procol Harem, Some of the Beatles stuff. He loved Peter Paul And Mary and Mamma Cass Elliot and the Mama and Papas, Some of Neil Young's songs especially Sugar Mountain. I had to play that song for him all the time on the ole record player my parent's had while at home. And my Mom And Dad's dancing song was Credence Clearwater's version of Proud Mary. They Jitter-bugged to it every chance they got. I, growing up got to listen to whatever I wanted to as far as music went but my heavy stuff had to be listened to when my parents weren't home or in my bedroom quietly with the door shut.
Tim Fronimos interesting fact - Bruce admits that he basically stole the opening riff from this song for the intro to Badlands. All he did was play it in a major key.
I have literally been an Animals/Eric Burdon fan my whole life. When I was a baby my mom would play them to stop me from crying. When I first learned to talk I would always ask her to play their albums. As a teen my mom's friends thought it was weird that I was always listening to them, instead of "New" music. I guess I've just always had good taste in music.
I can remember when they were affectionately referred to by wags as "Eric Burpin' and the Animated Mules..." (Shades of Mad Magazine, Alfred E Newman and "What? Me worry?") We all knew they were something SPECIAL. Steppenwolf was another fav "bad boy" band...ah, youth!

Well said, and Mr. Chandler was the bass guitar player here (at 0:52 seconds) into the video.
Actually, before that, Les Paul discovered him playing at a small night club in NY, but he only stayed for a few minutes before having to leave in order to go to an important meeting or something. By the time he got back, he asked the bartender who the guy was, and he said something to the effect of "Why do you care? We kicked him out two hours ago because he wasn't that good and starting to play some really weird stuff on his guitar."
He asked his manager to find this left handed guitar player from NY and bring him to him, but a week later he got a call. "That left handed guitar player you wanted me to look for just died in a house fire."
Then, he saw Jimi on TV, called up that manager and said "You remember how a couple years back I wanted you to look for a left handed guitar player from NY?" "Yeah, he died in a house fire." "Well, you're fired because his name's Jimi Hendrix and he's on TV right now."
Great story, CPD0123, it sounds like Les Paul's manager was probably just trying to get out of really finding Jimi. A less diplomatic manager could have told Les, "find him yourself, I book jobs for you, I'm not your talent scout." :)
Not too long before he died, Les was on NPR, and in that interview, he told that story, along with how his first electric guitar came to be.
I have the story from Al Kooper's wonderful autobiography. Al Kooper is not always a great guy (and doesn't present himself as a great guy), but he writes well and his book is mine of info on music from early 60s into mid 70s when Kooper's star faded.
Wow, this is a good version! This band was one of the best, and Eric has so much vocal strength, it's pure artistry.

+Rory Gallagherfan I never missed a single performance.
nicely put my friend

How interesting. Jimi opened for the Monkees but left after a few shows because the crowd kept yelling for the Monkees and Davy Jones, in particular.

Hvala:)
Eric "pretty little face" has a brutal voice, i loved
The looks on Eric's face at the start of this performance are incredible. In them I see the eyes of a man whose years of hard work along with his band members has finally come to fruition. Spectacular performance all the way around. Their organ player, particularly in the House of Rising Sun, was incredible.
Eric Burdon has one of the best rock and roll voices of all time. I'm a huge fan of his.
I might also add Eric Burdon and the Animals were from Newcastle upon Tyne, where my grandfather was born.
I saw them Animals, the old Spectrum in Philly like 1982, all the original members reunited, one of the best concerts I ever went to.
Eric Burdon is amazing. Sometimes it's hard to remember that he was only a teenager when this was made. He is still singing and rocking hard here in So Cal. I think Joseph Gordon Levitt should play him in a movie!

"The House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals played a critical role as the base camp of British artists' invasion into America. In my purely subjective opinion, they are no less legendary than Beatles. But this group was split up so early. What if they had lasted longer and released more good songs!
+Hong Y.K. Good point.I think the Beatles are the best. But artists like this were so influential. And enjoy them all!!!!

They didn't write that song. Their version is weird to me. Not very folky whatsoever.

For their second appearance on January 24, 1965 The Animals performed “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” These early shows recorded some of The Animals best performances as they energetically charged the audience.

They were definately a no-nonsense bad-ass approach to rock music.

its comming,just wait and see..
This was written for the great Nina Simone who performed it first. You can find her version on RUclips - haunting and powerful!
Hello Linda B,
The song writers always go with the demand of the market... Now, what we get is RAP music, too bad, so bad...
Those times when playing instruments was the real talent, today only with undressing, you get 100 million views.
Lexius Castro You say that, but it was also quite common for them to not have any idea how to play their instruments, or have no real artistry to it.
But they still made it work. Beauty isn't always perfection and to be honest without the internet it's hard to learn a instrument properly without a teacher.
also nobody can sing nowadays they need auto-tune
Lots of people can still sing... and play instruments... best not to judge an entire generation on one side of it's music..
Lexius Castro clearly you've not seen some sixty films. Waaay more female nudity just for fun not artistry.
UK have been the base for the most talented bands of all times. It is undeniable. No other country can beat Britain musically speaking.
yes exactly that what i think!
Disagree, although there are many the usa leads by far. Just a few, the grateful dead, almand brothers, skynyrd, Stevie ray vaugh, bob dylan, marshall tucker, charlie daniels, grand fuck railroad, chicago, dave mathews, pearl jam, nirvana, etc etc etc
@@Demon-rq5de I have never heard of them mate
What? Surely I can't have written those comments 11 years ago? Mind you, my taste in music hasn't changed. Still love this to this day. Always remember Eric Burdon say, however old he was, that he "could always conjure up the voice".
Any British band in the '60s: Comes to the US
Girls in the audience: *infernal screeching*
Vanessa Elm Overtone. Far better than undertone.
Truly a rock god.
Best rock vocalist.
Gravely and growly 20 yrs before Springsteen.
10 YEARS .BRUCE WAS WRITING IN THE SIXTIES TOO ~~MANFRED MAN SONG IS ONE HE WRITTEN > NOT YELLING JUST USING THE LAPTOP SO I CAN SEE A BIT BETTER .
@@jimwade9570 Jim you are right. thanks for the correction regarding Bruce. writing in the 60s.
Great point
Tim Fronimos interesting fact - Bruce admits that he basically stole the opening riff from this song for the intro to Badlands. All he did was play it in a major key.
Freddie mercury
I’m 74 and Istill love listening to the animals.brings back happy memories..
I grew up listening to the animals and this song reminds me of my son who passed in 2010 at 25 he was a good soul ♥️
im so sorry for your loss RIP
Eric Burdon was the original punk rocker...
love that cougar, puma , mountain lion picture of you :)
Jeannie E. Hess are you a cougar?
never thought about it that way, but you are so right.
Jeannie E. Hess hey we could exchange messages. Do you have WhatsApp?
I have literally been an Animals/Eric Burdon fan my whole life. When I was a baby my mom would play them to stop me from crying. When I first learned to talk I would always ask her to play their albums. As a teen my mom's friends thought it was weird that I was always listening to them, instead of "New" music. I guess I've just always had good taste in music.
robroy497 amen...were a dying breed of youngsters.i pitty the millennial generation and that bs they listen to
robroy497 ikr
onya rob me t8
There’s no such thing as good taste in music, get over yourselves. What you think is good taste others find tacky, that’s why it’s called taste.
Можно слушать бесконечно. Вроде умер месяц назад. Он будет жить пока мы его слушаем.
1 of the great keyboard bands of the '60s. Along with Zombies, Doors,Pink Floyd,John Mayall.......!
No animals were harmed in the making of this video.
Hahahaha. Lol 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂. I found that a little too funny

lol
I can remember when they were affectionately referred to by wags as "Eric Burpin' and the Animated Mules..." (Shades of Mad Magazine, Alfred E Newman and "What? Me worry?") We all knew they were something SPECIAL. Steppenwolf was another fav "bad boy" band...ah, youth!
Do you remember watching them? We watched Ed's show every night. The Beatles, Rolling Stones... yup good time's before the war really set in.
the only problem with the Animals' songs is they're too short.
Esin Dirik what???? There all like 7 minutes long on the tapes. This is a edited one
Biblical do you have any links for the 7 minute version?
Esin Dirik ruclips.net/video/FNFslsBxZ00/видео.html. This is the only one I could find. But the originals are very long.
@@cheshirehomestead3574 You're thinking of House of the Rising Sun. 6 1/2 minutes, if I remember right. None of the others were long.
Short and sweet, no overlong solos, 2 and a half minutes. That's rock n roll.
He sings them notes so easily! I could see myself as a groupie back then..
one of the great song of the past..Rest in Heaven HILTON VALENTINE, May 21, 1943 - January 29, 2021.
0:41 I think I saw Eric crack a slight smile.
I don't think I ever seen him smile in all of the videos I have seen of the Animals.
Bad to the bone.
Man Eric Burden can sing! Great song...timeless.
1965=modern music~~2020=classic...#1 old school band.
This is live. The real deal. A great band.
This is the first song that me and my wife agreed on, right after we first met. Good to hear it again, after all this time has passed...
To think Eric is a great grandfather now. Such a talent....
