It's not possible to say how many times I've belted out this song, singing along with your uncle, in the car, the living room, the lake, the kitchen.. since it first came out. I was 11 or 12, and couldn't get enough of The Animals. I liked other groups too- but the voice and delivery of Eric Burdon was like no other. I was, and still am, astounded by that voice coming from such a young man. I remain a fan..

@2FistedFighter500 I totally agree. I was 13 when it was released and I bought the 45 rpm version and played it so much my Mom threatened to break it. I couldn't afford to buy albums as we were rather poor. My 50 cent weekly allowance didn't buy much so I had to be careful of how it was spent. Every kid I knew who learned to play guitar played this version. I really liked Eric Burdon's vocal but the guitar and keyboard playing really made this a great song. Take care,

Agree. I think.some credit has to go to Allan price on the organ too. Those two together were magic. I was around 16 when this came out and it's forever one of my favorites
My first restaurant job was in a vegetarian restaurant in ‘91 or ‘92. A guy would come in regularly, park his Harley in front and sit in the same booth in my station. Ordered the same sandwich, the same way every time, with a large glass of fresh carrot and ginger juice. Tipped generously and never said much. Years later, a former coworker one day said “you know Eric Burdon, you served him every week at table 6” Totally blew my mind! I had a couple albums by the animals, and if I had known at the time I was serving someone I spent so many hours listening to, I would have flipped out! I wouldn’t have ever approached him about it or treated him differently. He might have liked the anonymity of the place, who knows.

The organ riff is what makes the song and makes it so memorable. Regardless of the true origin of the story of the lyrics, Eric's anguished vocals make it seem like a genuine confession story...so believable.
I think it's safe to say that you can't really kick out any of the legs to this song, guitar, bass, organ, vocals, and have it produce the same vibe. I've seen Eric do it many times, changing his attack on each one. It never works for me. Every single one of those Animals were in that room, at that time, for that one take. Eric Burdon and the Animals, as great as their catalog is, isn't quite the same as the original group. It's never been played as well since. A true one take masterpiece!

When Eric sings "Oh mothers tell your children not to do what I have done / spend your life in sin and misery / in the house of the Rising Sun" the pain and agony in his delivery really hits home. For me it's the best ever moment in any song I've ever heard. I was 12 when I first heard it in 1964, and I still feel that impact even today, 58 years later.
I've been watching many videos of ERIC Burden AND the Band THE ANIMALS and what I keep thinking is I'M SO GLAD HES STILL HERE but will be crying a LOT when he's not here💕💖💕❤️

Found a few moments like that elsewhere to be sure, but I'll always treasure that one. "Does anyone know where the love of God goes/When the waves turn the minutes to hours" from The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, for one. The whole of The Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel. A lot by Jim Croce. We're lucky to have been blessed by so much in such a short span of time.
I agree, apparently we're the same age, but this wasn't the only song. The animals did that really caught my attention. But this song has always been in a class by itself.
I was the luckiest man in the world when i met the animals thanks to my dad. We were at the old Americana hotel across from what is now the Ed Sullivan theater. I was 10 years old. My dad called up to our room and said Mitch come downstairs I want you to meet some people I met. So i go downstairs into a completely empty bar and my dad brings me in and there they were. The freakin Animals!! And I met Mr. Burton and all the guys. And they were dressed up in their tuxedos ready to go across the street and create history. My dad has since passed on, but i will never forget what he did for me. Thank you dad. I love you.

This is honestly one of the greatest songs ever made. His voice is so full of emotion and the instrumentals fit perfectly. No cover of the song has ever given it justice.
Mate, today's music is a lot of trash - music has largely been replaced by women artists flashing their genitals in dance moves. Admittedly they are very fit. But saying that, there was a fair bit of trash in the 60s and 70s too. I absolutely loved the Animals, I see it as men's music whereas the Beatles back then was teeny boppers stuff.
Rising Sun stands on its own as a great song. What pushes it over the top is how much emotion Burdon puts into his singing. His emotions come through in just about every Burdon song I've ever listened to.
What makes the Eric Burdon and The Animals version of House of the Rising Sun so haunting is the opening progressions. With the first few notes you know this is going to be something different and then the timbre and tempo that they bring to the song perfectly set the mood of someone who knows that there's no escape.
I love the look on Eric Burdens face while singing this song in the video. It’s like he saying “I know I’m kicking your ass and I ain’t even trying”. Stellar vocal.
The "video" is actually from a recorded TV appearance, they are lip-synching (which is why they don't look like they are putting too much effort in). There's a moment near the end when Hilton Valentine smiles because he can see Alan Price dragging the organ into position for the final shot.
The House of the Rising Sun has been my cell phone ringtone for as long as I can remember. Wherever the phone goes off in a public place, EVERYBODY loves it!

I'm only 74 years young . close to 75 and still love The Animals. Best years of my life. Still drive my 68 Camaro with the tape deck blasting. What a great time to be part of history. Thanks Eric
I had to bring this page up because today I heard the Animals’ guitarist Hilton Valentine has just passed away. I was fortunate to meet the man at a fan convention about 9 years ago. He was warm, friendly and I was honored to meet him. RIP
Those guys always seemed to feel like they had just been given a lucky break at the right time. I have met a number of musicians who I liked and admired, and when they hear that you play as well, they light up. They ask about what you like, what gear you have, etc., how you got started. It’s refreshing, but maybe shouldn’t surprise us. They didn’t do it for the fan worship in almost all cases. They just wanted to make an okay living with what they loved doing.
Funny story about Hilton. In the music video for House of the Rising Sun you can see him near the end behind Erin just smiling like a school boy. They even showed a brief glimpse at the end of this video, but he was smiling even wider a few seconds prior to the clip shown. I find it hilarious every time because you can tell they're trying to go for a real somber tone in the video, but he just can't help himself hide his excitement!
@@KyaKramer Hilton said the reason he was grinning from ear to ear was that just out of shot Alan Price, while still sat at his organ, was being wheeled from the back of the set beside the drummer to the front for the final shots. Hilton just cracked up at this. Lovely guy and is often seen really animated and happy on stage.
As a kid in the early to mid 60's, the Animals were my favorite group. Some of my friends were Beatles fans some were Rolling Stones, however the Animals were the best as far as I was concerned. Later their song "we gotta get out of this place" was my song while in military boot camp.
Love this song....was my husband's and my "song". He's been gone for 15 years now and anytime I hear House of the Rising Song, I get butterflies in my stomach, goosebumps and my eyes tend to leak a bit just from all of the memories!!!
I was born in 64, so it's not like I remember when it came out, but it was a song that would still get airplay on the pop/rock stations when I was young. It's a song that struck me as a 6 year old, I was enthralled with it as a 20 year old, and I've never gotten tired of it in my 56 years. There aren't many performances that you can say that about.
Eric Burden's voice is the greatest male blues voice of all time. Just as Janis Joplin's is the greatest female blues voice. God I'd have loved to have heard a duet by them!!

I can remember as a kid in the early 70's listening to AM radio in the car as Mom drove to various destinations. That created my love for music, and I haven't been the same since. When my daughter was a kid in the early 90's I introduced her to the music I listened to when I was a kid. Now she thanks me on a regular basis.

In 1994 I saw Eric Burdon perform "House Of the Rising Sun". The band started play the familiar opening, the guitar hook, the organ, bass , drums.....the audience erupted in grateful applause. Eric grinned and shouted into his microphone 🎤 , "I HATE this f*cking song!!!"

The Animals and Eric Burden's soul, passion and grit are what make this version of the song the most badass version. I was a kid when it came out and was too young to know. Hearing it now, 55 years later, I realize the raw power of this song and a new appreciation of the Animals.
When you look at the time that this song came out you realize how groundbreaking it was! No one did songs about bordelos back then. My parents wre shocked for about 5 seconds then they fell in love with it. I had great parents.
I remember my Mum being in hospital for about a month when my little sister was born. I was about 5 and was stuck with my Dad, my uncle and my brother. All three were musicians (or in my brother's case went on to be a musician). I remember this being played over and over and it terrified me! Over time is helped me to appreciate that a perfect vocal isn't just the one that is technically flawless but it's when the singer truly gets under the skin of the song. I'm a singing teacher so this has helped me to impress on my students the importance of understanding the meaning of a song and communicating it. Eric Burdon was a genius.
impossible to imagie anyone singing it better but its the organ swirling all over the track that makes it the absolute killer classic it is ....its one of those perfect versions that can never ever be topped

1964 - the only time I bought the sheet music and the 45!! My father threatened to kick me out of home for playing this over and over. What an amazing time to have lived through and this is one of my all time greats.

I loved Eric Burdon & the Animals since I was a kid in the 60s. In the late 1990s my lady friend & I went to see him play for the first time in club in Sydney and much to our delight we were invited by the New Animals’ keyboard player to their dressing room after the fantastic concert. Eric was such a nice & humble person and chatted with us for at least 20 mins until the guitar player said it was time to leave. Aynsley Dunbar the drummer was also very cool. We had a photo taken with Eric & he gave us his wooden bead bracelet as a token of friendship and wished us well. I cherish that night to this very day. Saw him play twice again on his subsequent tours down under …
I was just a kid back then but my sister had all the albums...beatles stones kinks etc. The house of the rising sun always caught my ear. You cannot get more classic than that song. It was and is brilliant.
Yeah I can still hear his Geordie accent, one of the most popular accents in the UK. Love the animals and the song. I grew up with the great music of the 60's & 70's a great period of real musicians and singers, etc

This is one of the best songs to come out of the 60's. Definitely the definitive version of this song. For a folk song it really rocks. The reason why this song is great is both the great arrangement and Burtons powerful and underrated voice.

When you talk about "bottled lightning," HOTRS shines as a prime example. Of course Eric's vocal is awesome, as is the organ solo. But we must not overlook Hilton Valentine's signature and oh-so-recognizable riff. As soon as you hear that first note, you know what song it is. Incredible piece of music! (Great interview with Eric, by the way.)
The tone of that song at the beginning was like here's a warning don't go there even at age 5 I knew what it meant and I told my mom I promise ill never ever go to that house of the rising sun even to this day I never wanted to even want to go there. Its a great song and I hope it keeps going. And it tells a very important story how a house of pleasure can destroy you in one way or another and brand you forever.
This is what I call great music. Eric Burdon is a very good vocalist. The Animals are a great band. I have listen to this song lately many many times and feel this is actually one of the greatest song I have heard. When listen to this song I get chills in my whole body and get the feeling that Eric Burdon and The Animals really like what they do.
It always amazed me that his voice didn't match his looks. He looked like a young innocent little teenager. He sang like a 40 yr. old. He was sexy no matter what. To this day l can't believe that song came out of him. What a talent he was. And still is.
Eric never looked like an innocent young teenager, He was wild, alive, he would keep his sly, tough smile and move his eyes to fit the songs he sung. I heard him in a coffee shop in 1966 and he represented all the wild people at that time. He is a legend who walked the walk and talks the talk. We all felt anti establishment and unlimited possibilities in the music then.

I'm in my mid 70s but I still remember vividly seeing the Animals perform this song on TV. Watching pop shows was OK, but you definitely felt distanced from the performers - but not with Rising Sun! I felt right there with them, it was a truly awesome feeling. One of the best Pop TV moments for me.

Its a hard act to follow though. 3 decades of innovative technology in electric instrument's, studio recording, and media venues to get the music to the masses with an ever changing run of legendary talent bleeding out from fast societal changes and a nation in social upheaval. The music was innovative cuz it wasn't so cookie cutter the same, being disseminated by national canned radio all the same lame game. I preferred my parents albums. Late 50's to late 70's is where I'm at for best music. Born in 65. I guess its really a matter of your taste at your time. Personal. Wine women and song. Sex drugs and rock and roll. Same meaning. Different time. I have no idea why I just wrote all that. Oh yeah. 80's sucked. Nukes. AIDS. Big hair. Crap music. Crap economy. Corrupt government. Crooked cops.
The song says it all, about how some realize that they are a slave to drugs, their path leads to ruin, and all the pain and misery won't end until they die. I cry everytime I hear this song. This song is soul wrenching, especially the way Eric sings it, I love it !!!
Saw Eric a couple years ago and his voice still resonates and is amazing. So many artists as they age lose something but he’s still got it. A true gift.
I just love how the 1964 performance of house has Eric slow walking, it reminds me and some others of a funeral March, which I think adds to the feel and lyrics of the song. I've heard a version of the song from the 1920s, so yeah its a very old folk song.
So glad he likes this song again! I saw him in concert and he said he couldn't stand hearing those opening chords anymore. It kind of disappointed me as I was a real big fan and I was so glad I was getting a chance to see him and that is what I took home with me
It must be difficult for him because he has done so many great things since but is forever defined by this. He was also completely screwed over by the keyboard player (Price) who claimed all the royalties for himself. Left a very sour taste.
The House of the Rising sun is the first memory of my late dad turning up the radio in the car. He was never a music officialdo. But his musical taste help form my life in later life. This song will always hold a place in my heart. Thank you for this.
Eric Burden came to my High School and set up his band in the Gym for a small concert in the late 60's. These guys really worked hard, and played in lots of places besides big concerts. There was no band like them.
I remember hearing this as a kid. I was blown away. And when I saw Eric singing it for the first time, I was blown yet again. A baby face with an old soul which translates thru his impeccable voice 🔥🤘
I'm glad he referenced the fact that the original song he sourced was sung by a woman and about a brothel and the vice was prositution not gambling. His adaptation still stands and is the definitive version that is the soundtrack of the sixties. Nina Simone is pretty spectacular as well.
I’ve heard covers that can be better than the original in some people’s opinion, like Disturbed covering Sound of Silence. But it is unanimous that this original is immortal, no cover will touch it.

I remember my best friend picking up my guitar trying to figure out the arpeggios from the guitar part in the song. The 60s were a fun time to be a teenager. I would have a radio cranked up in the garage to Sacrament's KZAP while I would solder up some electronics creation on my work bench. Those were fun days.
Despite all he's been through over the years Eric still retains that traditional English modesty. I think he knows it is one of the greatest vocal performances ever recorded.
I remember the first time I heard this song, I was lost in It. I had no idea who it was at the time, and it took me awhile to find it out...but once I did I became a life long fan. I don't remember where I read a review of the song years ago, but they described it as something like the hectic time keeping of the drums, the rhythmic throb of the bass, the feverish and intense keyboard playing, the melodic and capturing guitar, combined with Burdon's epic anguished, sorrowful, mourning wail on vocals........has always stuck with me......I am a metal head, always have been, but this song is magic.....the emotion and the scene it paints, reaches out and transports you into this song and sets it's tone in your soul. You feel everything...It's never been duplicated. In my opinion, this is probably the most brilliantly perfect arrangement of a song ever done in any genre......It truly is amazing

For me it's the best ever moment in any song I've ever heard. I was 12 when I first heard it in 1964, and I still feel that impact even today, 58 years later.

Found a few moments like that elsewhere to be sure, but I'll always treasure that one. "Does anyone know where the love of God goes/When the waves turn the minutes to hours" from The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, for one. The whole of The Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel. A lot by Jim Croce. We're lucky to have been blessed by so much in such a short span of time.
I agree, apparently we're the same age, but this wasn't the only song. The animals did that really caught my attention. But this song has always been in a class by itself.
I was the luckiest man in the world when i met the animals thanks to my dad. We were at the old Americana hotel across from what is now the Ed Sullivan theater. I was 10 years old. My dad called up to our room and said Mitch come downstairs I want you to meet some people I met. So i go downstairs into a completely empty bar and my dad brings me in and there they were. The freakin Animals!! And I met Mr. Burton and all the guys. And they were dressed up in their tuxedos ready to go across the street and create history. My dad has since passed on, but i will never forget what he did for me. Thank you dad. I love you.

Mate, today's music is a lot of trash - music has largely been replaced by women artists flashing their genitals in dance moves. Admittedly they are very fit. But saying that, there was a fair bit of trash in the 60s and 70s too. I absolutely loved the Animals, I see it as men's music whereas the Beatles back then was teeny boppers stuff.

Rising Sun stands on its own as a great song. What pushes it over the top is how much emotion Burdon puts into his singing. His emotions come through in just about every Burdon song I've ever listened to.

What makes the Eric Burdon and The Animals version of House of the Rising Sun so haunting is the opening progressions. With the first few notes you know this is going to be something different and then the timbre and tempo that they bring to the song perfectly set the mood of someone who knows that there's no escape.
I love the look on Eric Burdens face while singing this song in the video. It’s like he saying “I know I’m kicking your ass and I ain’t even trying”. Stellar vocal.
The "video" is actually from a recorded TV appearance, they are lip-synching (which is why they don't look like they are putting too much effort in). There's a moment near the end when Hilton Valentine smiles because he can see Alan Price dragging the organ into position for the final shot.

I had to bring this page up because today I heard the Animals’ guitarist Hilton Valentine has just passed away. I was fortunate to meet the man at a fan convention about 9 years ago. He was warm, friendly and I was honored to meet him. RIP

Those guys always seemed to feel like they had just been given a lucky break at the right time. I have met a number of musicians who I liked and admired, and when they hear that you play as well, they light up. They ask about what you like, what gear you have, etc., how you got started. It’s refreshing, but maybe shouldn’t surprise us. They didn’t do it for the fan worship in almost all cases. They just wanted to make an okay living with what they loved doing.
Funny story about Hilton. In the music video for House of the Rising Sun you can see him near the end behind Erin just smiling like a school boy. They even showed a brief glimpse at the end of this video, but he was smiling even wider a few seconds prior to the clip shown. I find it hilarious every time because you can tell they're trying to go for a real somber tone in the video, but he just can't help himself hide his excitement!
@@KyaKramer Hilton said the reason he was grinning from ear to ear was that just out of shot Alan Price, while still sat at his organ, was being wheeled from the back of the set beside the drummer to the front for the final shots. Hilton just cracked up at this. Lovely guy and is often seen really animated and happy on stage.

As a kid in the early to mid 60's, the Animals were my favorite group. Some of my friends were Beatles fans some were Rolling Stones, however the Animals were the best as far as I was concerned. Later their song "we gotta get out of this place" was my song while in military boot camp.

I was born in 64, so it's not like I remember when it came out, but it was a song that would still get airplay on the pop/rock stations when I was young. It's a song that struck me as a 6 year old, I was enthralled with it as a 20 year old, and I've never gotten tired of it in my 56 years. There aren't many performances that you can say that about.

My mom is responsible for introducing me to a lot of the great 60's groups, including The Animals. Still a huge fan, today.
My mom introduced to the Beach Boys. Then 1984 hit and my cousin introduced me to Van Halen and it was over from there.
I can remember as a kid in the early 70's listening to AM radio in the car as Mom drove to various destinations. That created my love for music, and I haven't been the same since. When my daughter was a kid in the early 90's I introduced her to the music I listened to when I was a kid. Now she thanks me on a regular basis.

In 1994 I saw Eric Burdon perform "House Of the Rising Sun". The band started play the familiar opening, the guitar hook, the organ, bass , drums.....the audience erupted in grateful applause. Eric grinned and shouted into his microphone 🎤 , "I HATE this f*cking song!!!"

When you look at the time that this song came out you realize how groundbreaking it was! No one did songs about bordelos back then. My parents wre shocked for about 5 seconds then they fell in love with it. I had great parents.
I remember my Mum being in hospital for about a month when my little sister was born. I was about 5 and was stuck with my Dad, my uncle and my brother. All three were musicians (or in my brother's case went on to be a musician). I remember this being played over and over and it terrified me! Over time is helped me to appreciate that a perfect vocal isn't just the one that is technically flawless but it's when the singer truly gets under the skin of the song. I'm a singing teacher so this has helped me to impress on my students the importance of understanding the meaning of a song and communicating it.

I loved Eric Burdon & the Animals since I was a kid in the 60s. In the late 1990s my lady friend & I went to see him play for the first time in club in Sydney and much to our delight we were invited by the New Animals’ keyboard player to their dressing room after the fantastic concert. Eric was such a nice & humble person and chatted with us for at least 20 mins until the guitar player said it was time to leave. Aynsley Dunbar the drummer was also very cool. We had a photo taken with Eric & he gave us his wooden bead bracelet as a token of friendship and wished us well. I cherish that night to this very day. Saw him play twice again on his subsequent tours down under …
I was just a kid back then but my sister had all the albums...beatles stones kinks etc. The house of the rising sun always caught my ear. You cannot get more classic than that song. It was and is brilliant.

This is one of the best songs to come out of the 60's. Definitely the definitive version of this song. For a folk song it really rocks. The reason why this song is great is both the great arrangement and Burtons powerful and underrated voice.

When you talk about "bottled lightning," HOTRS shines as a prime example. Of course Eric's vocal is awesome, as is the organ solo. But we must not overlook Hilton Valentine's signature and oh-so-recognizable riff. As soon as you hear that first note, you know what song it is. Incredible piece of music! The tone of that song at the beginning was like here's a warning don't go there even at age 5 I knew what it meant and I told my mom I promise ill never ever go to that house of the rising sun even to this day I never wanted to even want to go there. Its a great song and I hope it keeps going. And it tells a very important story how a house of pleasure can destroy you in one way or another and brand you forever.

This is what I call great music. Eric Burdon is a very good vocalist. The Animals are a great band. I have listen to this song lately many many times and feel this is actually one of the greatest song I have heard. When listen to this song I get chills in my whole body and get the feeling that Eric Burdon and The Animals really like what they do.
It always amazed me that his voice didn't match his looks. He looked like a young innocent little teenager. He sang like a 40 yr. old. He was sexy no matter what. To this day l can't believe that song came out of him. What a talent he was. And still is.
Eric never looked like an innocent young teenager, He was wild, alive, he would keep his sly, tough smile and move his eyes to fit the songs he sung. I heard him in a coffee shop in 1966 and he represented all the wild people at that time. He is a legend who walked the walk and talks the talk. We all felt anti establishment and unlimited possibilities in the music then.

I'm in my mid 70s but I still remember vividly seeing the Animals perform this song on TV. Watching pop shows was OK, but you definitely felt distanced from the performers - but not with Rising Sun! I felt right there with them, it was a truly awesome feeling. One of the best Pop TV moments for me.

I just love how the 1964 performance of house has Eric slow walking, it reminds me and some others of a funeral March, which I think adds to the feel and lyrics of the song. I've heard a version of the song from the 1920s, so yeah its a very old folk song.

It must be difficult for him because he has done so many great things since but is forever defined by this. He was also completely screwed over by the keyboard player (Price) who claimed all the royalties for himself. Left a very sour taste.
The House of the Rising sun is the first memory of my late dad turning up the radio in the car. He was never a music officialdo. But his musical taste help form my life in later life. This song will always hold a place in my heart. Thank you for this.

Eric Burden came to my High School and set up his band in the Gym for a small concert in the late 60's. These guys really worked hard, and played in lots of places besides big concerts. There was no band like them.

I'm glad he referenced the fact that the original song he sourced was sung by a woman and about a brothel and the vice was prositution not gambling. His adaptation still stands and is the definitive version that is the soundtrack of the sixties. Nina Simone is pretty spectacular as well.
I’ve heard covers that can be better than the original in some people’s opinion, like Disturbed covering Sound of Silence. But it is unanimous that this original is immortal, no cover will touch it.

I remember my best friend picking up my guitar trying to figure out the arpeggios from the guitar part in the song. The 60s were a fun time to be a teenager. I would have a radio cranked up in the garage to Sacrament's KZAP while I would solder up some electronics creation on my work bench. Those were fun days.
Despite all he's been through over the years Eric still retains that traditional English modesty. I think he knows it is one of the greatest vocal performances ever recorded.

I don't remember where I read a review of the song years ago, but they described it as something like the hectic time keeping of the drums, the rhythmic throb of the bass, the feverish and intense keyboard playing, the melodic and capturing guitar, combined with Burdon's epic anguished, sorrowful, mourning wail on vocals........has always stuck with me......I am a metal head, always have been, but this song is magic.....the emotion and the scene it paints, reaches out and transports you into this song and sets it's tone in your soul. You feel everything...It's never been duplicated. In my opinion, this is probably the most brilliantly perfect arrangement of a song ever done in any genre......It truly is amazing
