    George Carlin (1937-2008) was an American comedian, actor, author, and social critic. Regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time, he was dubbed "the dean of counterculture comedians". He was known for his black comedy and reflections on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and taboo subjects. His "seven dirty words" routine was central to the 1978 United States Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a 5-4 decision affirmed the government's power to censor indecent material on public airwaves.

    Seeing some comments how they wish Carlin was here to witness how the world has turned. But you know what? Honestly, nothing has changed since he was still alive. Literally nothing. His comments are timeless. They still apply to today’s issues. It’s almost scary how little change we’ve made over the years since this brilliant man was around. If you want to know how George feels about today’s issues, just watch his content and you’ll know exactly how he’d feel.

      > No, there's no God, but there might be some sort of an organizing intelligence, and I think to understand it is way beyond our ability. It's certainly not a judgmental entity.
      The way he spoke and thought about the world often sounded like a dispassionate version of eastern theological ideas like Atman or the idea of it being a great big show for our entertainment. Plus the acid and mescaline he took points that way too.

    Fascinsted to hear him specify wanting to do a more Broadway style one-man show with autobiographical character work for his "next" show. As of this interview, he had just done his slam dunk 1996 HBO special "Back In Town". His next was 1999's "You Are All Diseased," which did not exercise any of these changes in format or candor. In 1997, George's wife (of 35 years) died, and he met Sally Wade, waited a year to start dating, then married her in '98.
    Such big changes in his private life understandably interrupted jos "Broadway" dreams, but we see George's personally informed character work as a Catholic priest in 1999's Dogma.
    Let us pause to appreciate George's power with words, but also his personal humanity.

    When I was younger and first discovered Carlin. I didn’t really get his perspective. I found it crass, but I think it was because I still had faith in humanity and society. I thought we were on the trajectory of progress. But I've come around to see what he saw. We are fucked as a society and a species. I appreciate his perspective of letting go of taking stake in whether or not we work this thing out. I kind of think of it like the movie Don't Look Up. Now I know the meteor is coming. There's no stopping it, there's no point in taking a moral stance, or taking stake in if or how many people survive. Just accept it and wait for the pretty lights when it comes careening through the atmosphere anyway

    • @RobertNagel-s2z
      @RobertNagel-s2z 6 дней назад

      @spacemad7359 Well, it might be a big asteroid, but I think we will eventually destroy ourselves. I am 60 and I remember in school they taught us all the wonderful advances of the 20th century like modern medicine, machines that can do the work of many, and how life expectancy is 3X what it used to be 100 years ago. But you'll never hear the bad side of that.
      Like how they are chopping down the Amazon rain forest and making agriculture fields to feed all these fucking people. Japanese fishermen do a lot of fishing in the Atlantic because they ain't catching shit in the Pacific. Twice as many people are being born right now than those who die. How many years can this go on. I say we will fuck it up so bad, probably in a couple hundred years, that when the shit hits the fan, millions and millions will perish. Yes that big asteroid will come again someday, but people will fuck this place up LONG before that asteroid hits.
      Just my opinion.
