Breitling Navitimer for being the worlds first smart watch, inventing the design of every chronograph today with the pushers, the first Chronograph in Space and for creating the first Automatic Chronograph. A true Icon looks great in leather and pilot Bracelet, love it!
Hello Sir I have a question. I recently bought a vintage navitimer with the AOPA logo on the dial. Made in 1960. My only question is every navitimer I have seen has a 15 on the outer ring. 12 13 14 15 16. Do you have any idea why the 1 is missing on mine. It says 12 13 14 5 16? It has a black dial with champagne sub dials. All original except the bracelet is stainless after market from the Era and the plexiglass crystal has been replaced. It actually keeps better time than my Datejust from 2000. Thank you for reading hope to hear what you think.
Breitling takes the crown for aviators. I was wearing mine on my commercial check ride and actually used it to calculate the diversion part of the test. I remember using the slide rule function and announcing the course of 246 degrees and the required time as 7 1/2 minutes. The examiner gave me an old fashioned look but said nothing. I counted the time down and was dismayed when I had to say we had arrived but I could not see the airport. The examiner took the controls, stood the aircraft on the port wing and said, “Look down”, and there was the runway! He told me on the debrief he was impressed. True story!
I haven’t flown a plane in the past 20+ years that wasn’t smarter than my watch. That said, still love my Navitimer Airborne and old 18k rose gold Premiere. Still rocking the all-black Rolex GMT as a daily driver though!
The Speedmaster! It's also extremely comfortable to wear, extremely durable and fairly inexpensive compared to most chronographs. If you are not the collector type it can be your "one" watch.
Fully agree, it can be dressed up with the stainless steel band, or it can be sporty/everyday with a rubber, canvas or nylon band. The black face makes it very versatile in terms of using colored bands.
I think the El Primero takes the crown of best mechanical chronograph. With its high beat rate and proper 1/10th of a second timing capability. The Speedmaster Moonwatch is a legend of course. But my actual favorite chronograph here is the Navitimer...I think it has a retro technical beauty about it that just appeals to me. If I could have only one of these, it would be that one. But if I could have all of them (together with a Daytona) I would of course.
Rolex basically nicked Zeniths decade long hard work, tweaked it and made their in house movement -BIG DEAL....Every watchmaker does that these days to badge the "in-house movement".........Few companies in the world have the dedication to make an in-house movement, from scratch which is what Zenith achieved...They did not base it on anything......Rolex may have "ditched" the parts, but they did not design it.....I give more respect for the people who actually make horological history, rather than selling brand value...

One of the very few channels for which I actually turned on notifications. I'm dreaming of owning a speedmaster one day, such a beautiful watch that would go very well with a rally strap.
I've worn my speedy professional for 12 years and never had it serviced, still running like a champ, I have had many other timepieces, but this one is the one I always come back to, it just won't quit! Love to see it recognized!
Another watch that went to space during the Skylab missions (hence it's nicknamed Pouge, being the astronaut who wore it). It was being worn when the first and only to-date labour dispute happened in space #funfacts
@@KRaikkonenSF If you're talking about the Vostok rockets, there were only 6 that went to space, and if you're talking about the watches, they were only given to ground crew, it was the Poljot Sturmanskie that Gagarin et al wore in space :)
I have both a Navitimer 01 and a Speedmaster with the 1861 movement. While I like and wear both watches, I wear the Navitimer a lot more. It’s just the higher quality piece. The dial details as well as the movement are just a lot better on the Navitimer.
I have always enjoyed the Breitling Navitimer! I still think it is still one of the most beautiful timepieces made! I like the Zenith and have always loved the Omega Speedmaster! I also like the Bulova Lunar Model. I own a Modern version that has a Citizen 262 kHz Tri tuning fork movement styled after the Bulova Model Prototype worn by Astronaut Colonel Dave Scott. The hesalite crystal on the NASA issued Speedmaster popped off so Scott replaced the Omega with his personal backup prototype Bulova watch. Not only was a Bulova wristwatch worn on the moon but it replaced the broken Speedmaster. This Mission was the Apollo 15 mission in 1971. The Prototype Bulova was extracted from a safe deposit box on Oct 22, 2015 and sold at Auction for $1.625 million. The reproduction is a more “earth friendly” variation with a patented quartz UHF movement. A very accurate timepiece!
I still thing the Navitimer is one of the most Beautiful Watches ever Made! Yes, I love the new Breitlings are beautiful and more accurate - but the Navitimer still has a special place in my heart! The Omega Speedmaster is gorgeous and I Love The Bulova Lunar! Hard to make a Choice!!
I used the same Asahi Pentax MX for 30 years, that you have pictured in every video. My father gave it to me, also had the same Pentax 50mm f/1.4 SMC lense, along with a 35mm f/2.8 and 135mm f/2.5 SMC primes. The 1.4 was my favorite. At the time didn't noticed what kind of masterpiece the MX was and really wanted a Canon A-1 with a 80-200mm f/4 zoom, an wonder electronic SLR. Over the time the MX with it's perfect ergonomics, fully manual settings, professional controls and prime lenses proved completely superior. When it became hard to get the films processed I bought a DSRL but was appalled how bad a new camera was with a dark viewfinder, clumsy controls and zero allowance for creativity. Hopefully will find one day a digital camera that can match the MX. Thank God watches didn't went quartz all together like cameras, with mechanical pieces constantly improving. All three pieces are fantastic, imo. The Navitimer, Primero and Speedmaster are all much better positioned than the Daytona, a definitive bank executive watch or something like that. Which is a shame, because the Daytona eventually became a great watch, very thin with an in-house movement. Even when based on the generic Valjoux 7750 and quite tall, would say that the IWC Pilot Chrono and Carrera Chrono 16 also deserve an honorable mention, by the IWC brand being used by the Luftwaffe and the Carrera having a rich F1 history.
i have a vintage Speedmaster that I dearly love, but the best watch horologically is the Zenith, hands down. the smoothness of the high beat is almost unreal.
Great choice! I've had one for many years now and I never tire of it. It has stood up to all kinds of hard use too and still looks great and never failed in any way.
@@michelemariotti8198 It's just a rather inexpensive NATO I found on Amazon. I'm currently wearing it on another not very expensive brown leather NATO strap which gives it a real vintage look. The striped one will go back on soon enough I'm sure.
I think a watch collector should own all three and a Valjoux 7750 in one form or another for good measure. I’m just missing the Breitling at this point. Thanks for all the great videos!
I cannot deny the Speedmaster is superb and is rich with amazing history but I prefer the El Primero. The modern Zenith Deny 21 is a mechanical fascination, now measuring 1/100ths of a second and that is staggering
You know you watch far too many horological videos on youtube when you guess correctly the second two chronographs after the Breitling is given away at the intro. I've been obsessed with the Speedmaster Professional for a few years at least and I probably will own one, one day, but for now I am salivating over the vintage aesthetics of the Junghans Meister Telemeter (black dial). That will be my next one.
Fantastic video, as always. But I belive the world's first automatic chronograph was the Seiko 6139-6002, which was sold from as early as 1969 and was fully in-house as well. For me, the Speedmaster truly is the greatest chronograph of them all.
I just recorded the time of this video using my very first chronograph! Time recorded is precisely 10:50, first I thought it was because I have a Lucien Rochat; then I realised I had rewound the part about how the Speedmaster was used to prevent certain death on Apollo 13 without stopping the timer. Live and learn.
Best readability is the Speedmaster, in my opinion. It is a "simple" mechanical watch with a hand winding movement, yet, it is so sophisticated and so important to horological history. The Navitimer is one gorgeous piece, with dead accurate movement (the inhouse) and quite readable chrono movement.
Excellent video and spot on with the historical significance of the top 3. My personal Speedy 3572.50.00 is the ultimate Speedy imo. Hesalite Crystal front, sapphire caseback with the improved manual wind 1863 movement for longevity...just perfect.
I’ve been considering getting the Navitimer over the DATEJUST. Sold my Soeedmaster last year as I fell out of like with it. Only “issue” I’m seeing with the Navitimer B01 is the Q 2 year service they recommend for seals and then the Q 6 year complete service. My Hamilton Chronograph is 15 years old, never had it serviced and keeps perfect time. For $9300, I don’t feel you should have to send it it that often. But again I get it - small gaskets, temperature changes, they’re going to dry out/crack/rot.
This is a great video. Makes me love my Speedy even more. On the Zenith Primero - I used to own the Tag Grand Carrera Calibre 36 which used this movement. It was finicky indeed, requiring 3 services in 7 years. Finally got rid of it. You can blame it on Tag, but it was the movement.
For me it is the Speedmaster! I have one myself and it is a remarkable watch and looking at it on my wrist, I can feel all the weight of it’s historic relevance behind it. A stunning watch!
Speedmaster all day. I have also a Navitimer A23322, its beautiful, shinier, but less comfortable to wear. I love both, but my speedy is something else, I enjoy winding It every morning. I just feel proud looking at It, never thought I would own one.
Very difficult choice. The Omega was the first watch I've been playing with when I was a child. My elder cousin had one and he let me wear it and play with the buttons for hours. Thank you Ugo
These watches are very nice, agreed... But I'm really liking the Rotary chronograph watches. They're very handsome, well-built, quality timepieces that are stylish as well as functional. Not to mention the price point is very agreeable for people on a budget.
My personal Trilogy of watches are the Navitimer, Speedmaster, and Submariner. I own all three and love each one immensely. I understand the majority voting for the Speedmaster in the comments here. For me though, I was a private plane pilot and the Navitimer is my ultimate watch. It will always be the most useful mechanical watch I've ever owned after mastering all of it's functions.
Great review as always. I love my Daytona but agree with you that the speedmaster is the best chronograph watch, hands down. I sold mine a few years ago and bought the grey side of the moon meteorite. Although it is a lovely watch, I missed the speedmaster moonwatch and had to have another. I’ll never sell it again!
That comparison of the Caliber11/Chronomat to a tractor hurt a little, even though I got your point... In hindsight, the "cheating" to be faster happened a lot in watch history (e.g. the race for deep Diving between Omega and Rolex,as you covered as well)
The intro says it all about the Daytona. It's a chronograph that doesn't hold much historic value but no doubt a beautiful chronometer. Thought Longiness would deserve to make it on the list.
I own a El Primero panda in ceramic and a Speedmaster moonwatch professional. I should probably get a Dress watch, but honestly chronograph are so cool.
A truly ingenious invention, and something that will never not be admired. I personally do not own a watch... after my Tisso wood-watch slipped from a now demolished leisure centre pool locker onto the hard tiled flooring and allowed its delicate winder to fall from its sensitive placing (I simply haven’t ever gotten over it), but man will always need this measuring tool and so will always love it. Kind regards LM p.s. Great historical moments are not always documented
There is a 4th, the Fortis Cosmonaut chronograph. It has been standard issue of the Soviet Space Agency for decades. Unfortunately, I think 2020 was the last year of production for that specific model.
Another great review, so well made as ever, these are probably the best watch reviews on RUclips I think. The insanity of Rolex stainless steel Daytona prices here in the UK right now is that the Grey market price is around £18,000 plus. It's £9600 & up to a 12 year waiting list from a Rolex dealer. Which means, if you had that amount of money to spend, and didn't want to wait 12 long years, you could actually get all 3 great watches in this review for the same price as 1 Daytona, and have some change left over...More proof that the world we are living in really is going mad..
Rightly said it is the SpeedMaster which is the greatest Chronograph the world has ever seen and worn. But I feel a watch like Rolex Submariner is given a bit too much importance which should be due to the Speedmaster.
I'm very seriously considering buying a Breitling Premier Chronograph 42 soon when the funds allow it, but part of me also just wants to buy a second hand Navitimer B01 for about half the price right now
Speedmaster will always, personally for me continue to be the greatest chronograph ever made. Also, one’s got to appreciate the Navitimer and El Primero. Great video though!
Excellent video as always. I have to completely agree about the Speedmaster, it’s a mighty fine machine and does command much wrist time although I have to add that my Daytona is also a very satisfying watch to wear, probably my most comfortable time piece.
Got lucky to actually own the speedmaster pro and as well the speedmaster model 376.0822 « holy Grail » really like that one my favorite in fact and at a price in 1988 that has nothing in common with today’s price...as well I do have the Navitimer fighter edition very accurate ETA movement but also have a thought for my PEPSI 16750 Ca. 1981 and it’s Panam story...(not a chronograph I know). They are plenty of chronograph watches that are beautiful but historically wise with it’s impact and long lasting design the Omega speedmaster pro is the one just like you said...😉
The logical successor to the Pre-1978 Navitimer is the current Sinn 903 ST and the most faithful in form following function as well. All improvements to its functioning are conservative, but needful. Improvements over the original Navitimer include: greater shock resistance, greater magnetic resistance, greater water resistance. I think the power reserve is probably improved from the original as well. Each improvement built on the original watch's design. The actual rights to the dial design belong to Sinn and that is why you will not see a major competitor daring to have solid black hands on the sub dials against a white/silver background. Competitors Including Secora/Breitling rhodium plate, chrome plate, use white or silver, but never pure black. Only Sinn.
The speedmaster of today is so closely linked to the original. Their historical significance is unmatched in the world of chronographs. Hesalite crystals and still handwound. They are wonderful watches to own.
Very hard to split these 3. I own a Navitimer Heritage but will adding both the other 2 to the collection at some point.. Understand why you picked the Speed for its NASA heritage, but that Zenith is something else for the money, Hi beat movement. Unbelievable. Forget that Daytona. And the Navitimer is just a beautiful looking watch with an amazing slide rule mathematical machine..Well done video as usual...Just go out and buy any one of them.....
Did not have the speedmaster yet, but the Navitimer and Sinn 903 and I think the Sinn is the better Navitimer. It has excellent quality and finish, a displayback and a bezel crown. All that for less than half the price. It actually is a real navitimer because Sinn licensed the Navitimer when Breitling went broke some 40 years ago.

Imo the 2 of the greatest chronographs ever made is the omega speedmaster snoopy and the old school navitimer with the 7750
This is a great video.
One Speedmaster to rules them all. Although i love my HV blue more, its a must to own one and wear it on a sunny day.
Amazing video. I'd take the Navitimer over the Speedmaster, however there is no wrong answer
Just purchased my first speedy last week, a mint 3570.50 from ‘09. Might be the only watch I’ll ever buy!
These watches are very nice, agreed... But I'm really liking the Rotary chronograph watches. They're very handsome, well-built, quality timepieces that are stylish as well as functional. Not to mention the price point is very agreeable for people on a budget.
My mother knows your voice so well she knows im watching this channel whenever she hears it
My personal Trilogy of watches are the Navitimer, Speedmaster, and Submariner.
The Speedmaster is the most loved watch! So of course it is!
Fantastic video!
The Rodania Geometer was released a couple of years before the Omega Speedmaster, the Speedmaster is almost a direct copy.
Thank you for this info sir. They are literally identical.
Wow, amazing. I'd never heard of this...
The Speedmaster has all the winner numbers. Great design, great name, great quality, great history. Definitely the best!
IMO the speedy’s the greatest watch of all time, let alone chronograph.
I own a El Primero panda in ceramic and a Speedmaster moonwatch professional. I should probably get a Dress watch, but honestly chronograph are so cool.
The Navitimer and speedy are my favorite. Which of them 2 is cheaper to service? 🤔
Kind regards
LM

All three are beautiful, personally I’d take the Zenith
Technologically, by far, the Zenith is the best of the three!
Defy El Primero for the Technology, Navitimer for the Romance and the Speedy for the Significance; the best 3 watch collection ever
Yes it is, completely agree!
Rightly said it is the SpeedMaster which is the greatest Chronograph the world has ever seen and worn. But I feel a watch like Rolex Submariner is given a bit too much importance which should be due to the Speedmaster.
I'm very seriously considering buying a Breitling Premier Chronograph 42 soon when the funds allow it, but part of me also just wants to buy a second hand Navitimer B01 for about half the price right now
The Navitimer is stunning I just wish I had the wrist size to carry it off..and No collection is complete without a Speedmaster..
SpeedMaster is high on my list for an alternative daily watch to switch out with my Breitling Chrono SuperAvenger.
Speedmaster will always, personally for me continue to be the greatest chronograph ever made. Also, one’s got to appreciate the Navitimer and El Primero. Great video though!
Speedmaster is an ICON of a watch!
Fantastic video, informative and very interesting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent video and historical perspective.
Excellent comparisons. Well deserved win for speedy !
love that zenith el primero one of my dream watches
SO glad to see the Speedmaster on the pedestal it deserves.
I love Omega they let everyone be able to afford a limited edition watch :D
The video quality is awesome.. Which cam are you using?
Speedmaster hands down
Did not have the speedmaster yet, but the Navitimer and Sinn 903 and I think the Sinn is the better Navitimer. It has excellent quality and finish, a displayback and a bezel crown. All that for less than half the price. It actually is a real navitimer because Sinn licensed the Navitimer when Breitling went broke some 40 years ago.
Definitely Speedmaster is the ultimate chronograph.Thanx Omega for this fabulous time piece !!!
My sing on bonus when i join an airline will be used to buy a navitimer. My favorite watch.
