Can we take a moment to admire the amount of effort Watchfinder puts into the production of his videos? All the close-up views of the watches are simply beautiful. This is the best watch channel I have ever come across. Glad this was in my recommended.
I agree about the production values and the script they use. My one gripe is the "clickbait" nature of the video titles -- this one is a perfect example -- where is the "cheap" chronograph?
I'm waiting for something that's multiple orders of magnitude more accurate, never has to be wound, and is virtually indestructible. Oh, wait, I already have one. It's a $10 Casio in injection-molded plastic with rubber strap.
We are talking about a watch as expensive as a second hand car and that costs probably the same to service. It’s pretty offensive to call a high luxury masterpiece with tons of history a cheap watch. It’s as high as most wealthy people would go for a watch. 10k+ is for people with really, really a lot of spare money or just for idiots who buy things they can’t afford
Pareto's law or more familiarly, the "80/20" rule applies everywhere. Omega is a fine example of watchmaking, the Breguet more so and PP the ultimate. Each representing an exponential increase in work and value. I would place them at 80, 95 and 100 percent respectively. That last 5 percent costs more than 10 times the first 80 and 4 times the first 95. Their value lies in one's ability to appreciate the level of refinement and workmanship. Your videos and explanations help to educate me, and I'm sure others, to develop that appreciation. Unfortunately, my bank account hasn't appreciated in kind!

Pasquale im pretty sure the term cheap is used based on the relatice prices of luxury watches. Surely 5k isnt cheap but for a luxury watch? thats pretty cheap considering most would cost upwards that price
Pasquale you’re as wrong as you are right. £5000 is, in isolation, a lot of money. But if you factor in the design, execution, testing, quality control, the years of training each member of staff goes through and the technical ability required to assemble such an intricate mechanism it’s not very much at all. It’s not what a watch is or what a watch does that sets mechanical watches apart, but what it says about those who put it together.
Cheap? The cost of the Omega would be more than many could aspire to for one watch. Maybe for a collection? Yes! The rest are for those who do not live in this world.
"Cheap" makes most people think up to $500, not $5000. I know watchmaking is by definition expensive, but calling an Omega cheap makes me rethink going into watches....
For a mechanical movement it's not that expensive. It would be like saying " cheap car that has a V12". It's cheap considering the internals it has, i don't say i'll buy one, even if i make a good use of my money, but i just say it's the value of big brands and high quality watches.
@@The_Greg_5000 the seagull 1963 with venus 175 movement is worth between 200 and 300 depending on the version. I have the 42mm with opened caseback, the movement is really gorgeous for the price.
I own exactly the Speedy Moonwatch with Caliber 1863. Everytime I look at the watch from both sides, it reminds me how wonderful this piece of art really is. Even If you consider the history and legend behind the Speedy, it definitely has much value for the amount of money.
I am guessing the only reason why they didn’t feature Lange in this video is because it never used a Lemania manual chrono?🤔 In my view, when it comes to finishing nobody does it better than Lange!
Yes, Lange has only used their own inhouse chronograph. Patek, VC was then "forced" to produce their own to catch up, but the germans has since made the double--and triplesplit chronograph leaving everybody else in the dust.
@Panayiotis: if you didn't notice, the whole point of the video was comparing the "same" movement done at different price points. the El Primero doesn't fit (plus it's traditionally automatic). @others: there are manual versions of the El Primero (though they're nowhere near as pretty as even the 1863 here, imo. the auto is one of the prettier auto chrono movements around, but the manual is just okay)
It’s good to know that in our throwaway culture there are still craftsman that take such obsessive pride in their work. Where else do we get to see this level of craftsmanship in the world today? I may not be able to afford one but through these wonderful Watchfinder & Co videos I can certainly appreciate them.
A return to form vid wise. There will be loads of comments saying the Speedy isn't cheap. It isn't as a mechanical watch but it is for what you get especially when considering movement sharing & finishing. It's an explanation as to price differentiation (market positioning aside) & as ever beautifully illustrated 👍🏻
The Omega & Patek do have the same basic design. The Omega has 19 Jewels v/ the Patek 33 Jewels. The hand finishing of every part in a Patek has edgebreaks that are from: 0.0005 to 0.001 inches. FULL DISCLOSURE: I own 2 Patek dress watches. I would still consider adding this Omega to my collection.
My God I’ve had the Daytona in both stainless and now have one in ceramic but I must admit that the Speedmaster is unmistakably beautiful and I love every bit of it. It will be my next acquisition I promise you that and others like the El Primero, although appealing, doesn’t come close.
RGA1 I know my non ceramic Daytona was a before 2000 model that had a Zenith “Rolex tweaked” movement..I’ve never been particularly fond of a date window on a chronograph, that Rolex removed from the Zenith movement, I believe they should not have one it makes the watch much too messy.
Yes, very nice watches, different price points. I’m fortunate to own the Speedmaster. With the naked eye, I still find myself looking at the face and appreciating how meticulously done the design is. While watching videos showing the same at macro view I appreciate it even more. The moon watch is the most well done dial for a chronograph no matter how deep your pockets are. Historical too.
I am so done with everyone saying the omega isn't cheap. Of course there is no timex quartz chrono featured. Who would want to watch close ups of that?
Well I don't know about you but I'm here to see the beauty of extremely well designed, built and finished watches as well as learning about their heritage. A timex is about cutting as many corners as possible it just won't stand up to the scrutany of a macro lens.

@@jphili Its not about pure accuracy necessarily, a modern smart phone tells the time more precisely than many high end watches, its about craftsmanship.

Not correct. Usually the automatic winding mechanism is powered by inertia, not gravity. Think about it: you can wind an automatic in horizontal position by shaking - no gravity involved! Therefore the automatic winding works also in space with zero gravity. Only the watchwinder on your shelf works with gravity and would not function in space. But it would work on the moon, because the moon has gravity (a 1/6th of the earth).
I had sort of hoped we'd see one from A. Lange & Sohne considering they pretty much forced Patek Phillipe to go to the drawing board when the Datograph came out and I'm not sure they've managed to match much less exceed the finish level ALS puts on their movements.

The only manual wind Speedy worth owning is the 3570.50.00, I mean come on it was worn on the moon! No sapphire back version could have handled the rigours of exposure to space and made it through the required certification/testing by NASA. I love mine, but for some reason I tend to grab my Datejust 41 to wear instead more often. This video has made me take pause to appreciate it even more not just for its place in history, but also its complication. I will wear it more often and give it the appreciation it deserves.
I understand both sides when people say the Speedmaster is not cheap, as I could not afford one myself at the moment. But knowing that the bar goes so much higher (both in price and craftsmanship) makes me look at the entry level luxury watches as worth the money, if not an absolute bargain. I have to think that overtime what they learn will filter down to other products. Kind of like the S class and the C class.
I’m saving for a Zenith El Primero Annual Calendar Captain Windsor, with the fume dial. I think the applied Arabic numerals, and integrated chronograph would look stunning on one of your close up videos. I’d also love the see the Datograph, and your Saxonia from ALS (when it arrives). A one watch man... I envy your restraint. But what a watch!!!
Thinking about it, there wouldn't have been much point in having an automatic moon watch even if it had been completed on time, a floating rotor would have struggled a bit.
I mean the Speedmaster is a watch you take for the nostalgia factor that goes along with it. No other watch really feels brand new but keeps its soul alive. The fact that all of the watches are literally based on the same movement really does not make the Speedmaster look bad, but it is the father that the sons and daughters learned their lessons from.
Great video, but I can't justify the line "it takes a lot of money to develop an in house version". I mean come on, Rolex, Patek, AP are NOT poor or fighting to stay in business and yet the have been using non in-house movements for decades and until recently! I was once called out for "nitpicking" when I commented on AP RO Offshore not having an in-house movement... I'm sorry but at THAT price point, I have every right to nitpick as much as I like!
And yet none of these fine watches can even touch the accuracy of a quartz watch. Atomic solar for the practical folks. Great video of true fine watches. Thumbs up!

Love my hand-wind Speedy moon watch. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Should a watch like this be stored on a watch winder box, or is it ok for it to stop and restart when you use it again?
And yet none of these fine watches can even touch the accuracy of a quartz watch. Atomic solar for the practical folks. Great video of true fine watches. Thumbs up!
The pictures are amazing, thanks for this awesome video !!
Beautiful description,so simple yet extremely complex, well done I now know more🙏👍
Well done and thank you for this accurate and precise incite into this chronograph movement.
Brilliant presentation as always......
