- The chronograph. It’s both accessible and incredible, one of the most complicated mechanisms found in watchmaking and one of the most affordable. The fact that so many manufacturers have them in their collections is a testament to the popularity of the function, and whether we really use them or not, there’s no denying that they look pretty damn good. With that being said, here are five choice chronographs for five different budgets.

You know you're in a different world when $5000 for a watch is considered "very reasonable".
zi paris true - but when most are in the 10-80k range and that’s not talking about the 100-500k watches.
5 different budgets: expensive, more expensive, more expensiver, crazy expensive, fuck you expensive.
I have a quartz chronograph that costed around 300 $ and I couldn't be happier. I know most people here don't really like quartz watches but I really love it, even though it doesn't have the same smooth movements as an automatic one.
Either way I wouldn't spend more than 500 on a watch, no matter how awesome it might be.
To that means u aware about your surrounding. It is reasonable!
zi paris a decent watch costs at least $3,500 and a chronograph complication adds to the price. The cheapest decent chronographs are the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and the TAG Heuer Monaco and the go for about $5,000. I have a Breitling Navitimer B01 and the retail price is $8,500 depending on what strap or bracelet you get.
These videos are my crack. I can’t get enough of them especially if they feature an A. Lange & Söhne.
Bill Da Thrill this is my alternative to porn
riseuplight it is healthier :)
The finishing on that A Lange is unreal. Ultra clean even at such magnification levels... Truly a grail watch.
The camerawork on the A. Lange & Söhne was excellent.
yeah , i want them to make a video like that with the datograph perpetual calendar in 4K , IT gonna be awesome T-T
always is
amazing
yes, would love to see their lighting setup
even if i like so much swiss made watches this pice of art make my eyes criyn
Ladybirdsin16mm You could do nearly any of it with a big softbox. Karl Taylor did a video about a watch shoot he did. I think it was for Zenith. That was for still shots so it was a lot more specialised. He wasn’t using a turntable either.
I'm convinced that most watch guys are car guys and vice versa.
Christian Joseph , many are
I started as a petrolhead, now I'm a watch enthusiast as well, I like to call myself a gearhead 😅
They are. Many are also aviation fans and history buffs as well. It just goes with the territory.
Cars, watches, history, aviation and firearms lol.
Yes, I am.
These are all WAY outside my budget! My son gave me a Woehler for my birthday recently, and I love it! It has rectangular chronograph buttons with a two dial, well balanced, chronograph readout with blue outlines. The numbers are all blue and the leather band is black with blue stitching and a blue layer in the middle. The crystal has a lot of blue anti-reflective coating that simply glows in the light around the edges. I’m sure it wasn’t expensive but I love this watch, not just for the watch, but for the fact that my son gave it up for me. I don’t care how many thousands of dollars your fancy watches are worth they can’t beat this in my eyes!!!
Nice, but way over my budget. Hello Casio!
I really don't want to go back to a quartz movement but I would say that is what you get Al the lower end of the budget spectrum.
The Rotary Chronograph is what I consider a 'budget' navitimer at £89.00, solid watch but a quartz.... Still worth considering.
@@toonlad4091 quartz is the way to go.
@@toonlad4091 Why? Nothing wrong with a quartz movement.
G-Shock MRG, MTG or G-Steel?
I would like to get the Casio Marty McFly calculator watch. I wanted that watch when I was a kid. They still make it! A true icon of the 1980's.
Longines Big eye is the best amongst all.. a vintage style military aviation column wheel big eye chronograph.. phew !!! It’s a winner!!
Please, the character and style of the Breguet is second to none!! Great video as always.
You voice, the way you explain them, the written material is all very well thought of and you really are a genuine lover of these machines or pieces of art. The camerawork is simply amazing. You are one of the reason I have strong urge to know more about watches and their history and hopefully moving forward one day from Fossil & Skagen to something mechanical.
Thank you for making great content.
That 1815 Chronograph is a thing of beauty...
It's a "budget chrono" looool ! :D
@@schinagldaniel7752 Budget is a relative term and not confined to just being "inexpensive". The title of the video clearly states that: "5 'different' budgets".
The Lange looks better from the back than the front! Stunning movement and very nice dial - but I'm not blown away by the dial.
Highly likely the best narrator on a RUclips video. The delivery and choice of tone at different points of the video almost always inspires emotion with every single sentence. Amazing reviews of amazing watches.
These video’s are the reason I’m willing to fly to London just to buy a watch from these guys.. quality content beyond comparison!
Personally, I think this is one of your best videos to date. Beautifully done, Watchfinder.
Absolutely LOVE the Big Eye!!!
The production values here are through the roof. Fantastic subject matter and even better narration.
Yeah a camera and a table are quite unobtainable!!
I got longines bigeye a few days ago. I'm glad I got a proper watch for my budget. This one is a beautiful piece!
The camera work in these videos is just jaw-dropping! Absolutely beautiful!
Love watching you teach me about these watches and movements, the videos are most educational and this one, well, the humor at the end was a nice touch...
“Almost but” is so right a description. I’m always so drawn to Longines from magazines but when in person , many times ... I withdraw. But still waiting for one Longines that might be mine one day :)
Try the spirit, great watch, puts the iwc mark 18 to shame.
When I saw the A.Lange & Sohne I thought, "what's the big deal it's simple and plain". THEN they flipped it over and holy shit... I would wear it face down just to see that movement all the time, to hell with what the time is.
A Langer& Sohne is absolutely beautiful.
Only if I had 15k laying around :'(
@@aquilesvailo4786 rather 35k
I just received the Longines chronograph as a gift from my wife yesterday and I already love it!
Looks great on the wrist.
The only gripe is the strap it comes on. It’s the only thing I’ll be swapping out.
I’ll be stopping by Barton Watch Straps tomorrow to pick up a couple of nato straps.
Great content as always. Informative and delivered in a way that appeals to all , keep them coming
The Longines Big Eye is compelling. It has great heritage and military styling, a column wheel chrono' with vertical clutch and no date. It would look great on a nato.
no, it has a horizontal clutch not a vertical.
Is it some kind of an illness that I would rather get that A. Lange & Söhne instead of an equally priced car? Because i really do
Yeah, its called being gay
Not just any gay, but the Big Gay
Hell dude the car will depreciate faster than the watch. Id say the A Lange would be a smarter investment.
@@goldendawn7 that's what I think
@@MrAhuraMazda oh look, gay calling gay
The time and effort behind each of your videos is just insane 🙌🏾 and the way you described that A. Lange & Söhne 🙏🏾 ... Seriously even a cat would want to buy it 😄 Just Perfect
Excelent camera work
Really enjoy the footage and i hope you keep it up. I have learned quite lot from your videos.
Thank you so much these are amazing picks!!
That Breguet...
My dear God is it pretty😍
I just love to watch those high end watch movements work. I used to buy back in the 60-70’s pocket watches from the 1730’s to 1890 period. Some I just restored the movement and made plexiglass cylinders to mount them in polish up the inside and outside of the tube then if the movement back in. Looks wild listening to them click clack back and forth. It is like music to me listening to antique pocket watches ticking away. I still have 9 pocket watches laying around.
For Longines, I love my purchase of the Master Collection Moonphase. It's a 24h dial, a triple calendar, and a chronograph. I really think it's a great value.
A great reminder that I really need a chronograph! For me it's all about the JLC Master Chronograph v Breguet type XX. Very watchable video, thanks! Fancy featuring the Omega De Ville Chrono?
As always an outstanding review and an attractive selection of chronographs. There is another , high quality decent one: JLlC Master Chronograph with the so called sector dial. I am an owner of it and I find it elegant, yet very practical in daily use.
Love my Tudor BB Chrono. Looks awesome on leather and cool on bracelet.
I was very tempted by the type XXI but when my dad went to look at it prior to purchasing anything, he said the bezel was quite sharp and it felt cheap in the hand. So he bought me a submariner 14060M instead, it made more sense as I’m a serving member of the Submarine Service 🤷♂️
S. C. That is purely a matter of one’s opinion.
As I love IWC in theory, I have to say it's super cheesy to use this TOP GUN logo, as it is directly taken from the movie and NOT the real school.
This.
Double cheesy because Maverick in Top Gun wore a Porsche design chronograph most likely made by Orfina.
No shit?
They actually do special watches for the military so it may be really for top gun. I had the opportunity to buy one for $1500 similar to this one but done just for my squadron but the price was bumped up to $2500 at the last moment so I declined.
The back of the A. Lange & Söhne watch you showed is certainly hypnotizing to watch. Quite incredible how all that is squeezed into such a small space. Beautiful watch by the way.
Any timepiece produced by A Lange & Sohne is absolutely delicious 😋.
That movement in action is a wonder to behold!
Couldnt think of a less sissy adjective could you?
MrAhuraMazda187 I suspect that you’re a lonely loser. I feel sorry for your kind.
Lester Luczak they make my heart sink. They are masterpieces.
@@krokodyl1927 i feel sorry for your kind. The "kind" who get AIDS if you catch my drift sissy
The Longines is just mouth wateringly beautiful
I have owned a black bay chronograph for eight months now and it is fantastic.
Superb channel actually educating the collectors for a change. Loved your previous one on El primo getting one now.
About two years ago when the Breguet Type XXI was released I was seriously considering buying it but I got hung up on the fact it was a cam chronograph, on the other hand, I love the fact it's a flyback. D: The A. Lange & Sohne is magnificent.
I always love a watch that with elegant and fabulous looks; simple as 3 hands, with or without date. but when it comes to chronograph, a busy dial as Tag heuer formula 1 is my favorite, and suit my budget perfectly.
5 choice of moonphases for 5 budgets
Seconding that motion! Yes, please!
Great work guys!
2yrs on and out of this group, Type XXI hands down. Oddly love that piece.
Simply magnificent camera work.
Thanks for video, have been waiting for the big eye to be reviewed by you ,
Fantastic and informative as usual
Without a doubt, the best review of "Top Gun" ever. As usual, the watch commentaries are outstanding.
I've been looking at the longines recently. I also really like the Tudor . At some point I can see myself opting for one. With probably the Tudor just edging it
The fisheye macro shots are interesting (in a good way). The videography in these videos is consistently among the best on RUclips. Keep it up!
I think the Tudor has that combination of brand recognition and functionality and value considering the movement made by Breitling and the watch’s Rolex heritage at a third of the cost...
Narration 🙏
Pacing, voice, passion... Jus yes
The Longines Column Wheel Chronograph movement has got to be the best buy. Silky smooth to operate, and I look forward to the end of the day to take the watch off and admire it through the back
One of the few Chronographs within my budget I really like is the Zenith El Primero Original 1969. The blue and red colours makes it very versatile. And the movement is a well respected icon in the watch world. I would prefer the 38mm although I like the 6 o’clock position of the date function on the 42mm better.
Really great chronographs, we’ll spotted & reviewed . Each an individual. For the money, Longines can’t be beat, the A. Lange is a watchmaker’s dream, alas not for mere mortals... but my heart belongs to Breguet. Type XX just has that ... je ne sais quoi .
Love the IWC "Top Gun" Chronograph
Awesome as always, thank you
The macro shots especially on the A Lang movement is breathtaking.
I really liked the last one, it looks fascinating
I chose a vintage Sinn 157, but would love to have that Lange to accompany it. Dreams
With respect to the brands I will pick the Zenith El Primero.
I expected to see the Zenith and the speedy too .At least he knows cars, he never made an mistake in the correlation .
Oh my the Breguet.. Amazing
The face of the Breguet, the movement of the A. Lange & söhne ❤️!!!
The 24 hour subdial on that Breguet is one of the best things I've ever seen on a watch, it's so simple but it's phenomenal.
Great video. Thanks!
What I did choose some time ago is a Lorenz Theatro 2004 70th Anniversary chrono with the white dial on the metal watch band, it's my daily watch now. ~600€ for a, then, relatively slightly used 7750 with a sub +/- 1s/day error was too good of a deal for me to pass up… and I really like it.
excellent review, congratulations! In your opinion, which watch to choose between Bigeye and Hamilton Intra matic based on the future possibility of maintaining the price in reselling it is also for wearability for a 17 cm wrist? thanks
I love the narrator of these videos! He could perhaps talk me into buying a chronograph...even though I've no practical use for one.
I like the Breguet type XXI and the Tudor Black Bay Chrono.
Love the descriptions and what not, but the recent silent shots are just as tasty as that A. Lange & Söhne's mechanical endeavor of parts!
I actually prefer the Longines out of all offered.
Simple, legible and not too costly.
the longines spirit chronograph would be a better choice in my opinion.
I would love to see you review a Cartier Roadster Chrono (for me) and a Roadster date only (for my wife.) Keep up the great work! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
The new wide angle macro angle is bloody awesome!!
Tudor Black Bay Chrono and the big eye! Wonderfull!
The date function on the iwc is very cool
I like the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Chronograph and the Breguet Type XXi Chronograph. Nice curve camera view.
I really like the date window set up on the IWC
Yes Longines is under the Omega umbrella, but if I’m not mistaken, it is almost I’m seeing an Omega Dynamic from 1995 here. I know from experience as I was about to purchase said model but a stroke of weirdness had me purchase the Seamaster used by Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye along with the extra navy blue rubber strap that 006 (turned out to be a bad 00 agent) used in the movie. The Dynamic model was also made without chronograph but from memory was 36mm if I’m not mistaken. Apologies for rambling :)
Great video. GMT watches next please. And GMT, not world timers.
I own a Breguet Type XX 3820 Transatlantique and it’s great.
That Tudor is niiice!! 🙂
13:04 , “ Just take a moment, sit down and enjoy it.” Thank you for the amazing content
My only chronograph of choice is Breitling Premier B01 panda. In ideal world I'd go for a top end rose gold version. But only if I score a jackpot. It has 70 hour power reserve, 42mm case (my perfect size) and 100 meter WR, which is rare for a chronograph. The case and pushers are gorgeous on their own. I went through thousands of chronographs and still keep looking, but only this one keeps my attention.
The Sinn 356 flieger would be my choice! Cheers Oni
Thank you.
That was so worth waiting for the A. Lange & Söhne case back reveal ☺️
My dream watches are Glashutte. I have one now for 18 years kind of special and rare model don’t see it around very often. And my top favorite watches F.P. Journe with a torebillion balance assembly. I really like the way the dial has those white gold polished plates (sq or rectangular) metal plates screwed down onto the face over the smaller dials as if they are a picture window.
I really like the new tilted, backlit angle you have added!
My favourite chronograph is the Vacheron Constantin Cornes de Vaches. One and one day it'll join the collection.
Breguet Type-XXI is my favorite🥇🏆😍
I'd love to see a review of the 2019 Omega Seamaster 300m Chronograph Master Chronometer with your amazing macro footage! Congrats on the image quality ! The Breguet is fantastic, by the way !
Fantastic selection of watches, the ALS is just amazing.
I knew this video would feature the Lange 1815. I just wish it was the white gold with black dial. Utter perfection.
Ha! Snappy writing in this one. Also, love love love the new wide-angle macro shots!! Super unique.
Omega Speedmaster is the watch to go for if you talk about chronographs. It has the heritage and iconic looks like no other watch.
Word!
The speedy is my first pick when it comes to chronographs.
I think they didn't mention it because it's as obvious as the daytona.
I agree. Can’t imagine owning any other chronograph (other than my seiko quartz chrono beater).
Agreed, the Speedy has them all beaten.
Personally if no budget mattered I'd have A Lange as it's pretty much perfect, but as my budget does not stretch that far, I'll stick with my speedy 2006 reduced and my Sinn 903 st! More than happy with these myself.
