Along with the GMT, the chronograph is probably the most popular and useful watch complication out there on the market, though mechanical chronographs tend to be quite a bit more expensive compared to their time-only counterparts. However, there are a lot of great, less-expensive chronograph options if you know where to look. In this video, we’ll take a look at some of the best chronographs you can get from the affordable range all the way up to $3,000.

The new hamilton intramatic really grabbed my attention.
Stay tuned! Working on something cool.
@@TeddyBaldassarre I prefer it on the bracelet, just so you know🙂
Yes!
I prefer the contrasting tach on the auto..I bought one! But the manual winds are nice too. The aforementioned size is simply not an issue on my 7.25" wrist. The lugs stop short of my limit. Thickness yes, it's thick, but lays nice on the wrist and I don't notice it as much as some others...
I just don’t like the date window or the thickness of it
I was going to get a Chronograph for my next watch, this is perfect timing
Happy to help!
Empty what chrono did you end up getting? I'm thinking of the Tissot Heritage has a unique with great history. had a bad experience with a chronograph one of the hands came off.
Love my Lunar Pilot... thanks for the back story, it makes it even cooler!
Always enjoy these comprehensive reviews
The Sinn 356 is a very nicely sized sub 40mm chronograph from Sinn. Accurate, reliable, 100 meters water resistant, screw down crown, lots of different options for it. Its really underrated for what it is.
gah, very fab video Teddy! Informative as always! :)
For 3000, I got myself an Iwc pilot chrono, second hand of course but still one of the best deals you can make for that kind of money imho and the bracelet is amongst the very best in the whole industry.
Really enjoyed this list video. I appreciate the range - something for everyone. And love your Junghans.
I have that Bulova Moonwatch. Amazing piece, great story, hyper accurate, even for a Quartz. A wonderful watch to have with real heritage at a reasonable price!
I like the Bulova Lunar Pilot, good looking, accurate, hi-tech, good history, and economical.
And too big
@@ekimandersom4478 Big and small is all relative. Small wrist won't handle this big watch.
I bought one of these around 4 years ago. Absolutely brilliant watch! One of, if not the most accurate watch in my collection! And the price is unbelievable!👍🏻😎
My father picked one up about a month ago - lovely piece in the metal.
Although the specs seem "big", it doesn't actually wear that big once on your wrist.
I've got a BB58 so it certainly has a larger footprint but isn't unwearable for people of smaller wrists (me!).
Oh no, it's big. Anyone with 6-6.75" wrists just won't do. If they made a "mini", I'd get it in a heartbeat.
I have the Moonwatch from Bulova for about 3 years already and still love them a lot.
I’ve got one that should arrive shortly. I can’t wait to wear it.
Once again, another great list Teddy! The Tissot 1948 is one of the most beautiful watches I've seen for the price, hoping to add one to my collection someday. I know you had the Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope, but I also love the Meister Chronoscope as well, especially the blue dial/brown strap variant. Great video as always!
The 2 standouts to me are the Hamilton and the Junghans, both are stunning!
I just got one of your straps in the mail and it fits my seiko snkl23 very well. Glad I could support you in some way and I’m looking forward to buying from you more often!
Amazing video Teddy. My eyes on Tissot, Longines and Hamilton. Thanks for a detailed video!!
Best value for your buck is the Seagul Although it's made in China, it has a Venus derived movement and the Chrono is a column wheel.
I really got a thing for the Seagul right now! Such a cool piece!
Seiko VK Mecha-Quartz chronograph movements. 98% of the experience, 20% of the initial costs, 2% of the service costs, 0% headache.
No lie.
But surely paying upwards of $500 per service for a speedmaster is part of the experience 🤔😆
Seconded. The Yema Rallygraph quartz and the Dan Henry Chronographs use this movement and they make some great looking pieces if you’re looking at chronographs under $500
@@systematicchaos21
The movement costs somewhere between 15 and 30 USD in bulk, you can absolutely get watches cheapter than that using it.
Why I covet my Seiko Flighty and Black Lunar Pilot. More accurate, minimal servicing costs.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks 🧸
Great video. Many beautiful watches that I wasn’t familiar with. Thanks Teddy.
Hey, my Bulova made the list! It’s my summer watch, love it!
Ive owned my “other” moon watch for 9 months. It is is still accurate to the second. Easily the best value for money. It doesn’t quite have the heritage cachet of my Speedie but it’s not far off. Apollo 15.
Just wanted to tell you that this was that one video that actually made me buy the Tissot Heritage 1948. I was already looking to buy it, but kinda need a "push" and this video did it. I saw your review video after I bought it (reverse order, I know) and it simply made me feel like I got a gentle pat in the back for my decision. Now I finally have my first Swiss made watch and my first chronograph!
Gotta go with the Longines..sooo nice, especially the blue titanium one!
Bulova moon watch is pretty cool too and an amazing price!
I just added a Nivida Grenchen Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver. It's a near perfect re edition to the originals from the 60's and 70's. You can choose between auto and manual wind, plus there's quite a few varieties. Also, it's 38mm and has modern specs. Heritage brand brought back to life and a historic piece. Definitely worth checking out Nivida Grenchen.
Just traded my Hamilton Khaki Pilot Chrono and definitely looking for another Chronograph to purchase as my next watch. Considering between Tissot 1948, Hamilton Intra-Matic and Longines Master Collection Moonphase.
When it comes to Longines, I prefer Master Collection over Big Eye.
Teddy you are on fire lately with these videos!
Great work!
Great review here again, Teddy!
Some great designs and dials in there! Really like the Junghans Max Bill Chronosope, the Hamilton Intramatic is just a natural beauty, love the dial and shape of the Tissot Heritage 1948, and that robust Sinn is awesome. Sinn really kills the pilot chronograph with their offerings in that space.
I love this channel, and Teddy is an absolute scholar of the trade. Thanks for your great content!
I realize I'm quite randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream new series online ?
@Genesis Davis Flixportal xD
@Turner Corey Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I really appreciate it!
@Genesis Davis Happy to help xD
Omega speedmaster racing. Best chrono for around 3k. The all white dial you did the review on was amazing. I purchased it shortly after seeing your video on it and I loved it.
Me too! I got the black one.
Funny I own the Hamilton Intramatic and a Paneurop Chrono, a Chinese ST1901 manual chronograph, the Bulova lunar pilot, even two Maurice Lacroix Chronographs and of course the Longines Bigeye and yes they are great value! Loved to see that video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
its definitely time for the video to get an update with the new seiko, orient, and bulova.
Bought a second hand Dan Henry 1937 black dial no date on eBay for 185 USD. My first and currently favourite affordable chronograph. I fell in love with the 1937 line when I saw Urban Gentry talked about it.
Wow that's so cool that these are all your favourites and you happen to sell ALL of them in your store. What a crazy coincidence :O
Thank you it's been very helpful. Saludos!!
Nice review bro.
I got the hamilton jazzmaster maestro chrono. And certina DS Podium Chrono. Works great too at reasonable price for.collection
There's always the vintage Seiko 6139 and 6138 watches as well. In-house column-wheel chronograph, and a ton of historical significance. Just a few years ago you could get one in decent shape for under $150, but those days are over now. Still very affordable, even if you get it serviced immediately upon buying it, it's still going to cost way less than the automatic chronographs on this list, unless you want a very rare or desirable model like the "Bullhead" or "UFO" 6138s or the "Pogue" 6139.
awesome video teddy! GMTs next please!
Only choose Zenith for chronos. King of automatic chronograph
Certina ds first ceramic chronograph is my newest. Underrated brand and unknown watch with a great movement
When I was a boy I bought a Vantage reverse Panda Chronograph by Hamilton. I think I paid about $80 for it new from a local discount house in the late 1960's. I still have it today. It is the reverse of the Intra-Matic without the date. So as to not beat it up any more than the wear I put on it as a kid, I bought a Sea Gull 1963, a Seiko FlightMaster, a Citizen Eco Drive Chronograph, The Hamilton Lunar Pilot, a Corgeut VK Quartz Chrono, and a Pagani Design white VK quartz Chrono with date. I guess I like chronographs... I tend to use the quartz chronos as grab and go watches when I do not have time to set an automatic.
Got the CITIZEN CA0650-82F last year and really like it. And Citizen have alot of really cool chronographs at a decent price. And both the Bulova in the video looks really good!
The Bulova is good. I bought this watch for my brother.
Love the lunar’s buttons! They are sooo sleek!
Yes that’s true....somehow this reminds me on the fins of flash Gordon’s ship 😊😂
Eberhard & Co. Navy Master (not a new watch but it’s from the 90s so not a proper vintage either).
Looks like an expensive vintage Valjoux 72c watch but it’s a 7750 series (so sturdy and easy serviceable).
I adore it. Very compact (36mm, rare for the movement) and comes in a variety of colors (dial and case, mine is black with steel case, added a black strap and it’s lovely).
You can find it for around $1500 but it’s appreciating.
My Seagull 1963 Heineken dial looks and works fantastic. +/-1 second per day!
Love the panda Intra-Matic, will probably be my next purchase.
Love your videos - filled with your obvious passion and (in a great way) professorial excellence!
That Hamilton is going to cause me some problems. Happy birthday to ME!
Great informative video as always. I bought the reissue of the Aquastar Deepstar and am really liking this watch . There's a micro-brand out of Sweden named Maen that is coming out with a nice looking crono all Swiss speced . This particular company has made a nice , affordable diver called the Hudson . I had one sent to me to check out from their first generation when they offered it in 38mm and 42mm ( 42mm discontinued) I was sent a 42mm and for the price they sell for , I'm fairly impressed. So when I saw a rendering of their upcoming crono , it looked pretty nice . It sounds like it will be a great starter crono for someone lomking for a decent mechanical crono without breaking the bank . Wow !!! I'm rambling. Sorry. Great video. Have an awesome day.
Just purchased a Bulova Marine Star Chronograph last week.
Got myself a beautiful Dan Henry 1964.. Absolutely best bang for buck.
I recently picked up a Duxot Consillio Chrono on eBay for $100. Seiko Meca, 40mm x 11.5mm, Sapphire w/ AR, Porsche cushion case 1972 style, amazing 70’ style bracelet & all solid links, end links, and milled clasp. These were a Watch Gang special a year ago. Usually Watch Gang sends out crap, but these are amazing for under $200. They look good, are sized well, and are cheaper than most watches with these specs. It’s basically a better and much cheaper Dan Henry 1972.
I have been calling 2021 as the year of the chronograph!
Nezumi watches deserve to be on that list! Great design and affordable!
I’d love to see a video about affordable watches with beautiful movements. Just saw a great video about Kudoke watches which had gorgeous movements. But while an order of magnitude less costly than say a Vacheron, I’d love to learn what’s available between $500 and $2,500 with beautiful movements.
I recently bought the speedmaster reduced v2 with sapphire and the modern clasp for 3000 Euro. Imo the best affordable chrono out there.
Wait until you have to replace the Dupree Dupraz module..
@@bking12762 hope you dont own a car or house if you are affraid to pay for maintenance
Fear has nothing to do with it. Just try obtaining or repairing the module....
The Bulova is just beautiful! Probably my favorite affordable Chronograph but it's to big for my wrist 😭 they should make a 40mm version!
Bulova also offers the Chronograph-A with Miyota movement for 1/4 the price of the Swiss version.
I'm a huge fan of symmetry when it comes to dials. That Tissot would've been even more beautiful without the roman number and the date.
Fantastic video! You definitely hit on three watches I’ve been looking at lately. The LE Surfboard, the Intramatic AC and the Avigation Big Eye. I really like the case size and the lug length of the Surfboard, along with the overall look of the watch. It’s design is very unique and I like that Bulova stayed true to the original with this LE reissue. Now while I love the idea of a limited edition of 350, I feel that the quartz versions are too similar and make the LE seem less special. Also, I don’t like the Surfboard’s 16 mm thickness and the bracelet is meh. The dressiest of the three is the Intramatic, which is absolutely gorgeous and is one of the best looking chronos in the market today. My only gripe is that I really don’t like the high polished case, as it is too prone to scratches. Still, it’s such a looker and I find the blue dial to be a very tempting piece. Ultimately, I think the Big Eye will be my next purchase because of the killer military/vintage vibes, the column wheel chrono, the longer power reserve and the Longines name.
Great video
The "Vostok Amphibia of the entry level chronographs" should have a 3133 movement. Maybe the Poljot Strela?
I’m enjoying my Gemini from Lorier. Excellent watch at a great price point
nice line up, i like the Bulova's
Victorinox also has some good chronographs...
PS. That Tissot is beautiful!!
Also from Hamilton - Khaki Converter Auto
I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on it soon, it ticks all the boxes without the price tag of a Breitling Navi and with a really comfortable PR
That Tissot and Longines!! ❤️
I was going to buy a Hoffman Race 40 mecha-quartz. It looks nice and has the mechanical feeling. Didn't get the budget. So I will probably get a Longines down the road.
I really enjoy my Bulova Lunar Pilot. I do think it wears smaller than it's size suggests but it is not a small watch. But still quite enjoyable watch.
Hi Teddy, nice overview. I bought 2 Tissot Chronographs (in Australia), one each for me and my partner. They were the Couturier Auto Chrono T0356141103100 and Le Locle Valjoux Chrono T0064141105300, both have the same Valjoux A05.H21 movement. I was wondering whether you had reviewed either of these. Cheers from down under, and thanks for your videos.
Love the Hamilton!!
I just picked up the Tissot T41.1.387.51. I love the style and was on my collection list for my Tissot representation but don’t see a lot of reviews. Would love your take! Thank you.
That Junghans is a great looking chrono. I have the Seagull, and it’s a great watch/value. At the other end, my IWC Double Chrono is a 7750 base, but IWC Split Second...makes service no fun, as it is around $700 through Richemont.
Yeah, servicing is definitely something to consider when looking at chronos. Thanks for watching as always my friend and giving us a peek into your collection.
My compliments for the channel and the video. Maybe the Poljot Strela Chronographs had a place here. They go around 650€ and are very eyecatching
If you mentioned Sinn, than for a bit less money you cannot go wrong with the Sinn related brand : Guinand! Also Hanhart MK1 or 2 is one I' m looking for... Great video.
Great piece of content, I'm still undecided but I'm definitely getting a chrono when I turn 40 😆
There are some gorgeous OMEGAs well within that price range.
Great video. Have you heard about the Wolbrook Skindiver? A brand from the 1950’s worn by test pilots, also Neil Armstrong, that was relaunched in 2019. Stunning watches but there aren’t a lot of reviews on youtube. Just ordered their Chronograph world timer mecaquartz, didn’t arrive yet. Judging on looks and apparent build quality it could have featured in this segment. Cheers
I find the Bolova Lunar Pilot NATO strap really comfortable.
Teddy always excellent. From Costa Rica 👍
Bulova accu-Swiss Chrono is an amazing piece if you can find one!
I feel that Tudor may incl a chrono version of the Royal in 2021. 👍🏻🏴
That was quick! After my question about the crono overview....maybe a more comprehensive overview? Great tho as usual, thanks. The bulovas on my list fer sure.
Nah the vostok amphibia of the chronograph space was the Poljot 3017/3133. Unfortunately they stopped being manufactured in 2008.
The ST1901 is a movement you find in a lot of entry level chronographs, Lorier and Hemel have some standout ones.
I'm also quite a fan of my escapement time fliegerchrono. Such a nice watch for $70.
The best chronograph in this price range has to be the Longines Master Collection Chronograph Calendar. So many complications (automatic, column wheel chrono, small seconds, 24h hand, triple calendar, and moonphase) and a gorgeous dial.
Hamilton & Tissot love them both cheers
Fortis has some great Chronograph offering for a good value.
Best: Bulova Lunar Pilot
Second: Hamilton Intramatic
Third: Junghans chronoscope
Fourth: Longines Big Eye
Longines and Hamilton are the standouts here. I love Sinn but some of their watches have so many thick indices (like Damasko) that it clutters the dial.
Nivada Grenchen chronomaster reissue manual wind is great value
The Bulova Lunar Pilot module measures to 1/20 second, not 1/10 second. The chronograph second hand sweeps at 8 bps and the running seconds at 2 bps. I have 4 Bulovas with this module. The most accurate is running at < +5 spy. The least accurate of my twelve 262 kHz Bulovas is running at +4 spm. The average is around +2 spm. So, a measurable improvement over typical quartz watches.
Would love to see a roundup of affordable mono-pushers.
Some stunning watches! Can you do one similar with pilot watches please?
Love that Longines Avigation BigEye that was briefly shown. Wow! Have you done a review?
It’s for sure one of my best chronographs! It’s a column wheel and vertical clutch Chrono! Vintage reissue! The best...
I’m not a fan of chronographs but that Hamilton is gorgeous.
Ok
Thank you for all your videos and information it’s very helpful great content. So I am in the market for a $500-$1500 watch I have look at so many brands I’m trying to stay in the Swiss category which still leaves me with so many choices I need a bit of help I am a new to this ..
I’m between longines , Hamilton , Movado , tissot, tag huer, and few others .. any suggestions are certainly welcomed
You can get the seagull 1963 Chinese watch from aliexpress for under 200 dollars.
Nothing better than a sleek Chrono.
I have a FC manufacturer chronograph with in house movement... $1700.00 . My favorite chronograph... I have ten or so chronos
The seagull with that "in-house" (from Venus) column wheel handwound (non-hacking) chrono for 300 bucks.....
Hi Teddy, what's your opinion on Edox watches, in particular the "Skydiver 70's"?...Thank you in advance and keep up the excellent work.
Max Bill. Done.
You don’t go into any of the pros and cons of 30 vs 60 minute sub dials, the added usefulness of 12 hr sub dials, countdown vs count up bezels, the obvious benefits of central minutes hands (and why barely anyone makes them) or indeed any considerations to help someone who might want to actually use a chronograph rather than just have one because they like the style or idea of one.
Any why not mention the Sinn 14x which combines the at a glance legibility of a central minutes chrono with the added usefulness & convenience of a 12hr sub dial?
i like my bulova precisionist with the 1000th of a second measurement, incredible accuracy, basically the best chronogeraph period.
@@louiscyfer6944 Definitely a contender
