- If the digital age has taught us anything, it’s that there’s something unquestionably appealing about analogue. Whether its hi-fi, photography, cars or watches, being in control of a machine with moving parts that we can manipulate and understand is inherently satisfying. But as technology moves forward, knowledge of the old ways wanes, some of it to be lost forever. It is our responsibility to pass that knowledge on to new generations of aficionados, our duty-so with that in mind, here are five things you must never do with your mechanical watch.

6. You must never show the price tag to your girlfriend/wife.
I live in fear of my wife selling my watches for what I told her they cost me.
True.
@@WhatIsItReallyAbout I came here to make that EXACT comment!
😂 that would me more about auto preservation instinct than "mechanical armony"... but hey! still true!
@@WhatIsItReallyAbout It's fine, chances are, unless they are all rolexs or pateks, those watches are only worth 20% of what they originally costed.
1. Don't quickset the date between 10PM and 2AM (on most quickset date watches).
2. Avoid magnets, i.e. mobile phone speakers. If your watch becomes de-magnetised, you can get it re-magnetised.
3. Don't wear your watch over the top of your clothing (unless you're a diver).
4. Don't unscrew the crown of a watch underwater & don't take (most) chronographs under water (unless they have screw down pushers).
5. Don't force the watches mechanism i.e. force overwinding it.
You apparently have no idea what watching these videos is about.
I'm sorry I didn't watch it the way you wanted me to... Oh no wait I'm not.
Thank you for summarizing it! I had no patience for no bullet points
thanks man!
I think you mean. 2. If your watch becomes magnetised, you can get it de-magnetised.
Yeah, the guy who wears his Rolex outside his shirt also leaves the Armani label on the sleeve of his suit jacket. Love' em
The only man ever to be allowed to do that was Gianni Agnelli.
francesco arbia Agnelli was a ridiculous bouffon like all who wants to be original doing shit
How do you propose I hide my rolex watch while wearing a sleeveless midrif shirt?
My diving suits are made by Armani and the label is outside, so is the price tag.
david sanders I suggest you laminate the price tag and attatch it again on your clothes. I always do this so I bought my own tagger and lamination machine.
11. Always stretch the video to 10 min for full ad revenue
xD
Oof he was 1 second off
You mean number 6.
Dom inik if there is one channel that deserves the extra revenue it is this channel
MLWATKK because the production quality of this channel is amazing. I feel that needs to be rewarded.
"Yes, Gianni Agnelli famously wore metal braceleted steel and gold watches on the outside of his shirt cuffs, but look in the mirror --if you don't see the Chairman of Fiat looking back at you, don't do it." - Jack Forster
Many times (almost always) the difference between ridiculous and eccentric is just the amount of money you have
Very true gentlemen there was only one Gianni Agnelli.
Who's the Fiat chairman?
Daniel Orozco Probably Gianni Agnelli based on the context...
Why? Because if you have a collection and only wear each once in a while, makes sense not to have it contact flesh and sweat.
The last point is the best. Take care of your watches, they are fine things.
The last point should be first?
8:07 Just loved how you expressed mechanical sympathy. It makes me tick when people slam the doors, run stairs without using their toes, make noise while handling crockery, you get the point.
I just realized, one of my watches have been magnetized.. The Spring is coiled together and I am currently losing 10 minutes a week. Its a mechanical automatic. Well. You learn everyday. I was wondering what that strange behavior was. Now I know.
Thank you @watchfinder&co
Have you been able to solve the problem?
There are hundreds if not thousands of such watch tips videos, none of which put in words so elegant as yours. I always click on your videos not out of curiosity to the watches, but the words you are to craft together for them. Great channel for exploring watches and language. Thanks for the quality work.
right or wrong, I always set the date to the day before, and then rotate everything trough to the proper day / time, that way I know everything is in sync.
Only if it is out of that 10 - 2 time frame though. If I'm after 8:00 I'll move it past 12 and if it doesn't change the date, I'll continue as normal.
Yes, I do the same. And no complaints from my watches so far, some of them easily 10years old
Yes, I do the same & no complaints from my watches so far...
That’s a great idea 💡
100% agree with this
"don't use the chronograph under water"

LOL.. i just watched this video while wearing my silver f91 wm
As a corrolary to 'mechanical sympathy', read the manual that comes with your watch (or download a copy if you didn't get one). Aside from showing how to use all the features/complications (try figuring out how to set the timer on a Yachtmaster II without reading the manual), it will also let you know things you shouldn't do. For instance, if you have a chronograph that doesn't have a flyback feature and you try pressing the reset while it's still running, you can seriously damage the mechanism in some watches. The more complicated the watch, the more likely that there are gatcha's like this.
Always nice to see ur videos. Have a great 2019!
Loving that concept of 'mechanical sympathy' that you raised in item 5. I think I've (almost) always had it and been practicing it but I never knew it had a name or I was doing 'a thing'. I just used to call people who broke things or didn't seem to have it, 'heavy handed'. I never knew that they probably just don't have 'mechanical sympathy'.
Could you use that on a CV, job application or an online dating profile, do you think? Haha. Like, 'I have mechanical sympathy for cars, bicycles, washing machine control knobs, and fridge, microwave and door handles, etc'.
Only if you wanted to sound like a pretentious twerp. Communicate in ways people are likely to understand not ways that help others smell your own farts.
What you said touched me. I am a newbe to the watch world but I am restoring and fixing a boatload of old Bulovas from the 20's to the 70's, then putting them on the market for others to enjoy!! SO THANK YOU!!
We watch lovers are so atomized throughout society, it's awesome to actually meet one in person. I met a climber on Longs Peak in Colorado ask me if "that was a Bell & Ross". Similar paths in life.
You basically reading out a manual book and transformed it into a very compelling storytelling. Great job! “Mechanical sympathy” is the takeout
Very insightful, thanks!
I love the videos ,my passion for watches has been for the last 50years starting with a Smith's pocket watch when I turned 10years old . Now my go to present from my children is a chronograph of some kind ,I change watches at least once a day and love the fact there are like minded people out there . All these years I had no idea, thank you .
I have three engineering degrees and have never heard of “mechanical sympathy “ but now I know. It’s brilliant!
I totally agree. This is the first time I've heard about this also, but I love it. Be aware of tactile feedback and don't force anything!
+Tod S Don't you drive a car? Vehicle Sympathy is one of the most important skills.
MSM4U2POM yes, completely agree. I used to restore and race 914 Porsches. These required lots of mechanical sympathy. I just never heard the term until now!
@@tods.9947 Yeah, it's a good phrase which puts a lot of quite abstract and complex issues in a nutshell. I suppose the test of a good buzzword is when everyone understands it and you never need to explain it. I used it a lot when I was a driving instructor, and I'm pleased to say most of my pupils became good, smooth drivers. To be fair, of course, I can't say whether that was because of me - or in spite of me! LOL!
Three engineering degrees??? I have one & it works just fine. Hmm I have no idea what you can be doing wrong.
Got a new watch for my wife. Then sent this to her to understand what you should, or not should with her new watch. No fights, no issues , she watched it many times, and now she wants more info. Thank you for a great training system, and I was the good guy..
Highly underrated channel. Amazing content! Wish the pictures on the website were as good as your videos.
Great video as always. Thank you!
Something I don't get about watches. People talk about how they love automatic watches and they have "soul" and it's satisfying to know and feel that their mechanical watches having moving parts in them. Cool, fine, I love that too. But then at the same time people complain about how loud the rotor on a Bambino is or something like that. Isn't the sound of the rotor part of the appeal? It is proof that your watch has something mechanical inside of it.
MobiusCoin i have read this comment before surprised me. I have an orient bambino and i could only hear the rotor if i have my ear against the pretty watch. And mu hearing is normal. Probably over expectation or over analyzing the watch? I would expect at least some sort of sound, anyway, given the engineering involved in the pieces.
I sort of agree. But then again, sound means friction and friction means wear. So I understand the opposing argument as well.
Because obviously if you can make the mechanism silent, the mechanics are superior.
@@SenszR the mechanics aren't going to be superior on a sub 1000 dollar watch though
HA! Amazing comment, can hear my vostok ticking in a quiet room and rotor moving when I wobble it around real fast, given me different perspective on it
7:36 I love the phrase "Mechanical sympathy". You are great at choosing words for your videos. But for this one in particular, I can't help to love it, along with those following explanation.
Agreed!
Thanks for producing your channel. I really like your presentations and subject. Please keep up the great work. Dan in Canada
I like the left handed watches😁👌
I’m glad you brought up mechanical sympathy. I see a lot of well know reviewers changing the time on high end watches like they are in a rush. I know that these watch’s can handle it but even on my mid range watches I take my time. I just imagine the stress put on the movement and it hurts every time I see it.
You're a real watch genius! Your skills are on an other level!
Brilliant !!
Absolutely loved this 👌
Thanks i enjoyed this review!
If I may add my own sad element to this list, 5a) Do not allow a local watchmaker to work on your high-end watch, regardless of what they may profess or even if the warranty is over. I did so and the result was a rather costly - for me, anyway - trip to the factory repair center, adding hundreds of dollars to my bill.
Excellent! Will you ever review the Bulova Accutron Spaceview of the era of the Omega Moon Watch? I long for one but it seems a very difficult watch to service these days!
Very useful tip with the date function!!!!! Thanks man
Love your channel.
Fantastic content and its presentation.
One of the best watch channels on YT!
"Mechanical Sympathy" -- great construct!
Exactly! A wise man once told me, "take care of your gear and your gear will take care of you." You can apply that to your car, tools, computers, and yes, even watches. I try to get my kids to understand this but I'm not sure I'm doing a good job conveying the idea.
I've heard Guy Martin mention it with respect to riding motorcycles as well. It's a very apt description.
As an avid motorcyclist and amateur racer, 'mechanical sympathy' is a very old term...I first heard it some 4 decades ago as a young MX racer...
I need to stop watching these video's, It's really not a good combination with my Impulsive shopping behaviour.
Milan That is exactly how I bought my Tudor chronograph. :)
IKR, I almost spent another $1300 on a Stowa Fleger bronze after watching a video about them.
@ekim andersom , exactly.
"The smaller something is, the more care it needs to he treated with... children" What? Kids are almost rubber.
I just bought 3 watches yesterday after binging these videos
One of the best watch videos..Thanks
Great video, as usual! Happy New Year! Oh yea, I’m planning a trip to London specifically to visit your shop and purchase a watch - now to decide which one!
More than anything, your splendid videos make us feel great about owning fine timepieces. Useful, pleasing blends of mathematics, mechanical precision, craftsmanship and art.
Very well put!
Nothing like waking up on a cold morning, pouring yourself a hot cuppa, and settling down to learning a few bits from your favorite watch storyteller. ☕️😄 Thanks for the excellent content! Happy New Year and prosperous 2019! 🎉
As always excellent and informative! But I'd love to know why the Bvlgari GMT has chrono pushers?
Thanks for the advice.
07:22 "Children"... love it :) great video!
The date on my Hamilton khaki field automatic changes over right at 12 . It is beautiful .
Superb video as always! Keep crushing it! ☝️👌
Hi Watchfinder! Happy New Year! Do you have an episode on automatic winders?
My grandfather left a mechanical omega, I took it to a watchmaker to fix it up and now it sits on my desk for me to look at ❤️
"Mechanical sympathy"..! Awesome term, i love it, the best advice, show your beautiful the love it deserves, thank you for reminding us...!
Masis Masis I enjoyed his dissertation on that subject.
Very beautiful video. And your watch collection is great!
Awesome information for a new watch collector like me. Thank you!
I've never seen anyone wear a watch on top of a shirt cuff and thank God for that. I think I'd bust out laughing in their face, stranger or not.
Zuhair S, metal allergies I can understand, but I really never have heard of plastic allergies. And you must know there are other material options like leather or rubber.. So yeah, what are you actually on about resorting to wearing a watch over a shirt?
The simple things in life, eh?
The caseback is metal
Only if you're named Gianni Agnelli
@@zuhairs7929 well if you have a metal allergy then do not use a metal watch simple.
Thank you for yet an other exeptional high quality (in every aspect) and informative video. Best wishes for 2019

Nice tips, thx
Hi is there any review of Bremont? Or even specifically for the Airco Mach 2? Thanks
Never carry it Pulp Fiction style unless you are a P.O.W.
Especially if the crown is not tightened securely.
When I sneeze it operates the pushers, is this a problem?? 😂
I've always followed the first thing with a simple rule: always make sure the hour hand is in the bottom half of the dial before changing the date
Very good hint!
Awesome, thanks!
I have watched your videos so much that, anything I read now, I read it in your voice LOL. Really nice work. Thanks
That zenith watch is gorgeous
Good video but I have to say I think you left some info out on the date adjust. I was always taught run your hands to 6 o'clock (even if you don't know if its am or pm) and then adjust your date to one day prior.
Then roll your time forward to the correct date and time.
@Tom Smith What is the correct procedure?
Aaron Thomas you see, the problem is between 8:00pm and 3:00am, mostly, when the gears ⚙️ (i liked that emoji) of the day start to move, so what you said isn’t wrong, because if you don’t know if it’s 3:00 am or pm, it is better to leave the pointers out of that range of 8pm and 3am and change the day. My Montblanc star date automatic’s manual states that it’s not recommended to change the date between 8:00pm and 2:00am, in the other hand, my father’s Breitling states in it’s manual that it’s recommended to change the date between 8:00pm and 3:00am, so you gotta check your watch’s manual to see what’s the range of hours that can damage the watch.
Aaron Thomas and if you leave the date to one day prior and roll the time forward to correct the date, you will never make it wrong, because when the date changes, it means it’s 12:00 pm, than you correct the watch to am or pm as your need, as if you change the date itself, you might be using the watch in Pm in the Am period, therefore, it will change the date at 12:00 am, instead of 12:00 pm.
That’s the correct and safest way to do it.
I am happy i found watchfinder, am learning lots of usefull info ,more so why i prefer mechanical watches although my 4 watches are low priced to say the least . Mind you i would never ever give up my old Slava with its brass casing nor a watch that i received from my dear friend Yuriy, a Boctok, given to him after his military service ,to me it is priceless .
I really enjoy watching your videos. Could you review an entry level Bell & Ross and any Nomos and any Officine Panarai watch?
I’ve never heard it called Mechanical Sympathy before. I love it, and will have to borrow it. It’s perfect!
I’ve only used the term “being careful” or having “finesse” before. I was born in 1980. My father is a mechanical engineer, so I learned “mechanical sympathy” very early on, you could say, and it’s definitely something that isn’t learned, taught, or employed as much anymore by younger people. Women especially as most of them tend yo beat on cars. Ask any mechanic. I for one, would never buy a used car from a woman under the age of 55.
5:01 You really mean never put diamonds on a Rolex bezel correct? LOL
They're factory diamonds. Just saying
Those are factory diamonds dude
Thanks
#5 actually ought to be #1 as one needs to gain a relationship with a mechanical watch and each one is different. Great job, thanks!!
Top quality content as always, keep up the good work! - Finally a Graham watch, love these! please do a full review on one
Liam Carroll I had never seen a Graham watch until this video. Now I want one 😉
Stay in the moment to control your anxiety and slow things down. Takes practice but you can over several weeks calm your mind when it counts.

Could you review the popular Seiko SKX009/SKX007?
Why? Aren't there enough reviews out there? Like hundreds?
Sylvain Duford I think that was a joke.
I think it's more about context. This channel exists for the sake of watchfinder, which themselves dont sell seiko. As such making a «review» on a watch they dont have, nor will have, is not very likely. It is a great watch tho!
@Evan w Good point, but it would be interesting to see a $300 Seiko vs a $3000 Grand Seiko comparison video.
@@joebryant8500 Get em' son!! lol.
Besides the richly coined term "Mechanical Sympathy", I quite often would say to people who think they know it all
(especially family), even a broken watch is right twice a day!
This channel is nothing short of a love letter to each and every watch held.
Great video
My watch stopped at a concert, and I had no idea why. it didn't start up at all until days later. I am wondering if big concert speakers have strong enough magnets to affect an automatic watch?
magnetic strength is proportional to the inverse square of the distance (meaning you would basically have to be within inches right in front of a speaker for it to have any non-negligible effect). More likely than not it was the very high spl (sound pressure level), that had some effect on the delicately balanced mechanical parts of your watch. The point that the video makes about phone speaker magnets being dangerous is way overstated unless the watch is stored right on top of the speaker for an appreciable amount of time.
sjm4306 That’s what I was thinking. The massive noise level is much more of a concern
you didn't go to a concert, you went to a 'shit-fest', a concert doesnt require amplification.
“Never, never, ever!” Best part of the video! Hahaha
Delightfully helpful and as noted below, applicable advice to much of one's life! Thank you - I had forgotten about the cost of servicing; this was a timely (sorry!) reminder. Well done!
Awesome clip...I only have a Tissot (automatic chronograph) but I keep learning from your channel...keep it up!
How would you know if your watch has been magnetized or just needs to be regulated?
Hold a compass to it, if the compass starts spinning and not being able to find north then it's been magnetized.
Have the watchmaker demagnetize it first before opening it. If demagnetizing did the job there's no need for regulating.
But I like timing how long I can hold my breath in the bath 😔
Use Casio, child
Use Casio g shock or regular Casio child
