You guys don't even know what you're doing to yourselves by listening to every type of music you can find. You are creating new synapses in your brain, you are becoming more educated and finding out what every country, race and ethnic part of the world has to offer. You are learning that no one has the best music, and that all peoples have talent and music in their soul. You are just like I was at your age...Never confined to one idea or thought. I wish we were best friends.

for so long they never toured b/c they wanted that perfect studio sound. Later I got to see them twice in concert. Harmonies so beautiful I had to close my eyes
"Deacon Blues" is my favorite song by Steely Dan. "They got a name for the winners in the world, I want a name when I lose. They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, call me Deacon Blues"
When you get older, there are certain songs that you associate with specific settings from your youth. For me, this was a sunny Saturday afternoon, tired of cruising Main, you park your car in the shade of a big tree in the park. You crank up the tunes and sit on the hood of your car, watching the other kids cruise by in their rides. Good times back in the late 70's.
Reminds me of dancing to this record in my parents living room and every trip to the coast. Our tape deck broke once and my sibs and I sang almost the whole album all the way to the cold pacific.
We used to cruise main street in a old jeep with a Craig tape player and speaker boxes in the back. Steely Dan tapes spent a lot of time in the player.
Can you please recommend some more Steely Dan? I love Do It Again, Dirty Work, and Don't Take Me Alive. If I had to pick a few favorite S.D. songs. But I don't know much of their discography. Thanks!
Back in the early '70s when I was 15 years old, all of my friends were into Backman Turner Overdrive and Kiss... Me? Steely Dan was my groove. Though my young mind had no idea what their lyrics were about, I was all about their smooth sound. Now, this 60-year-old Grandfather is enjoying watching these kids feel that same groove that I felt oh so long ago! Glad to see this generation feel the exact same feelings that we had nearly 50 years ago.
Same with me. Never could understand my friends taste in 70s music. Now I see so much clearer - some people have no standards. I cried tears of joy and nostalgia listening to this with these young men, and in my mind it was a summer in my teens.
The 70's were amazing years to be a teenager. I loved early Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Chicago, Fleetwood Mac and yes Steely Dan. They're all still on my playlist today along with other amazing artists. Best music ever!
Songfacts: The instrument used on the first instrumental break is an electric sitar, which was played by Steely Dan mainstay Denny Dias (who later became a computer programmer). This is followed by an organ solo, which was played by Donald Fagen. This was described in the album liner notes as "an inexpensive, imported plastic organ (an instrument which long ago fell into disuse in most rock circles)." This was later revealed to be a Yamaha YC-30 with something called a portamento ribbon, which could create the slide effect.
Pick any song by them. Every one is like going on an adventure. These guys are perfectionists and it shows in every song they do. You just turn them on and sit back and enjoy the ride. One of the best bands in Rock.
@@MarilynMayaMendoza Me, too! I still have this album, that I bought in the late 1970s while in college. It reminds me of lazy California summer afternoons...wonderful memories!
The artists in this duo Feagin and Becker were studio musicians, not a touring act. The production is impeccable. Very tight. The writing is always interesting, not common. Smooooooth. Ear candy.
Welcome to the Steely Dan rabbit hole. These guys will always give you the mellow groove with exceptional musicality. I always got to plug in my bass guitar when I hear these guys.
@@madhatter5357 No doubt, one of my faves. Glad I had plenty of guy friends in college who would listen to the DAN w/ me. Most girls/women never got into them. Maybe it's because of my jazz roots from a young kid.
@@momofeagles Hey there, "Peg" 😎 I'm surprised to hear your gal pals didn't listen to Steely Dan. I was a teenager in the 70's and all of us girls loved them. Maybe a generational thing? 🤔
P rotoin Here is a fascinating, albeit very scholarly video, on a college course on music arranging(?) using “Black Cow” as the studied piece. It’s kind of long, but the instructions to the students in the beginning are interesting. Good stuff in here. ruclips.net/video/psEFA37_isE/видео.html
I had to come back and rewatch this great reaction! One of my favorites of you guys! This song is fantastic. “Time out! Flag on the play!” That killed me.
I should video myself: "First Time Watching First Time Hearing!" I'm laughing, dancing, crying, goosebumps! It's so fun. Keep it up guys. You make being stuck at home better.
One of the most technically knowledgeable and talented collection of artists ever. I grew up being a little brat about my dad playing this is in the car (Steely Dan is his favorite) but now I’m grateful. If you know anything about music theory, you know these guys are for real.
Me too! 40 yrs later to actually hear the lyrics HUMBLES me! Always in the car even when I begged to hear Van Halen and Styx on radio. YES got my dads attention. Do It Again is so soulful and smooth. Dad got us to our sports events family road trips doctor school...ect DO IT AGAIN and all Steely Dan brings back memories of the best of times being a kid in the 70s.
Love how you guys are dig’n Steely Dan. That whole record is great and also “Aja” is their other phenomenal record. They broke the mold in the 70’s. Their style was so fresh and no one was making the sound they made.
Even today, hardly ANY organic music, w/these lyrics/rhythms, are being made. It's ALL formulaic, cookie-cutter demographics! SAD...All being "manufactured" to satisfy "The Quick fix!"....But w/no long-lasting FX!
Bernard Purdie’s on that album. He does drums on a couple of tracks, specifically Home at Last. That’s probably one of my favorite albums by an artists/Group.
The lyrics go “we go back, Jack, do it again”. Great to see young people appreciating music which is timeless. Steely Dan are up there as one of the great 70’s bands that keep going today ❤️
Steely Dan was a warmup band I saw in the early 70s. I've loved them ever since, and feel pretty fortunate that I got to see them, because they were known as a studio band. Not a traveling band. Great to see your reactions!!
This song is about addiction...vices....first verse: drugs; second verse: sex; third verse: gambling. Go back, Jack, and do it again.....wheel turning round and round....can’t break the cycle
Stefan Heath Steely Dan’s lyrics are cynical, sexual, and sarcastic....the themes of their songs are pessimistic. Hard to tell because the beat and rhythms are so upbeat and smooth. There are also literary references....I’ve looked up a lot of stuff on my favorite SD tunes so I could understand what the song was about. Google “Steely Dan meaning” ....and you’ll see what I mean.
That realization that there haven't been any vocals in a minute+ is so good. I love getting lost in music like that, when you're so into it you lose track of what's happening, you're just locked into it.
I hope Donald Fagan can see you guys enjoy their music. It’s so great to see you guys appreciating the greatest music. Check out all their albums. You’ll be glad you did.
Haha. That cracked me up. They're called solos, kids. Or guitar breaks. And there were keyboards in there, too. And it was for way more than a minute. But that was a sure sign they were into it. And it was different to them. Fabulous.
These guys have stroke. After they reviewd Phil Collins, his record sales shot up. They need to start a business promoting records...... could make bank.
I want them to make bank but their innocence is what makes them so extraordinary! I just hope they stay who they are. Willing to experience different sounds with no judgement!
okay, it’s time to hear another one from Steely Dan. How about “Kid Charlamane” (studio version - not live). Larry Carlton’s guitar solos on here are so tasty. Who’s with me on this?
That's Denny Dias playing a Coral electric sitar - an electric guitar that produces a sitar-like sound. It's an outrageously good solo, and the fact that it was played on a Coral sitar just increases the WTF factor. Great choice guys.
There are lots of great Steely Dan songs for you guys to check out: "Deacon Blues", "Kid Charlemagne", "Hey Nineteen" to name just a few. They were an outstanding band.
Josie, Deacon Blues, The Royal Scam, Rikki Don't Lose That Number (did they do that already?), Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Reelin' In the Years, Dirty Work, Dr. Wu (Katy Lied), Peg, Aja, FM........just love Steely Dan! FYI, there was a fair amount of crossover between musicians from the Doobie Brothers and backing musicians for Steely Dan. Guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Vocalist/piano/keyboardist Michael McDonald are often in the credits of Steely Dan songs. I think McDonald mostly did just vocals (Donald Fagen was Steely Dan's keyboardist)---you can always pick out McDonald's voice in the background. Jazz guitarist Larry Carlton also was on many Steely Dan recordings.
Steely Dan one of the best. Love these old songs. When music was without auto tune. In concert the solos would go on and on. Need to listen to some Santana. Neil Young with crazy horse " Rockin in the free world"
I luv Steely Dan's music. As an 67 yr. African American grandmother I luv your adventures spirit. You will go far by listening to all music. It opens up your world. I'm surprise this didn't get a million views.

R. Jay stewart Facts....they truly write some good ass songs that make you think....I love Glamour Profession...you can even visualize all these drug deals....Jive Miguel ....he’s in from Bogota....lol
Steely Dan’s first single was called Dallas and the band themselves called it a stinker. The single bombed and the track was never released on their main LPs. Weird thing is, it’s actually not that bad...
You guys are adorable! There is SO MUCH Steely Dan you have to check out...they don't sound like anybody else. Check out the album Aja...masterpiece. it was 2 college friends. And then they would have different amazing studio musicians fill out the rest of the band on all their albums. SO MUCH TO LISTEN TO! Enjoy!

Glad you liked Steely Dan, you should listen to their whole collection: Reelin in the Years, Showbiz Kids, FM, Deacon Blues, My Old School, Peg, Aja, Bodhisattva (especially the live version). There's just so many songs from them you should hear. You may end up being a millennial Dan fan.

@@MarilynMayaMendoza Me, too! I still have this album, that I bought in the late 1970s while in college. It reminds me of lazy California summer afternoons...wonderful memories!
I was lucky to be a kid, with lots of teenagers in the family.
The artists in this duo Feagin and Becker were studio musicians, not a touring act. The production is impeccable. Very tight. The writing is always interesting, not common. Smooooooth. Ear candy.
I did get to see them perform at the Sopwith Camel in Glendale. But you're correct, they didn't tour often. 50 years ago? Damn!
Welcome to the Steely Dan rabbit hole. These guys will always give you the mellow groove with exceptional musicality. I always got to plug in my bass guitar when I hear these guys.
Preach!! They need to react to "Peg", next. 😎
Music to get stoned with in the 70’s. I guess it still is...lol.
@@madhatter5357 No doubt, one of my faves. Glad I had plenty of guy friends in college who would listen to the DAN w/ me. Most girls/women never got into them. Maybe it's because of my jazz roots from a young kid.
Mad Hatter yep!!! I just commented that they do "Peg" next!! Classic!
@@momofeagles Hey there, "Peg" 😎 I'm surprised to hear your gal pals didn't listen to Steely Dan. I was a teenager in the 70's and all of us girls loved them. Maybe a generational thing? 🤔
“...didn’t say not one word for a whole minute...that’s crazy!” Pure critique right there. 🥰🤘
“It’s called a “solo”, son.” 😂
Quite a realization for a youngster!
@@cherylwoodward bridge
P rotoin Here is a fascinating, albeit very scholarly video, on a college course on music arranging(?) using “Black Cow” as the studied piece. It’s kind of long, but the instructions to the students in the beginning are interesting. Good stuff in here. ruclips.net/video/psEFA37_isE/видео.html
If you can't smile and be genuinely happy watching these two young men discover the music of our youth than something is wrong with us. Love you guys!
Classic comment!💕
💞
That's gonna be the next hot shit 😛
Plus they take you back to a time when we all heard these songs for the first time.
“FIRST TIME HEARING Robbie Moreland FIRST TIME HEARING TwinsthenewTrend FIRST TIME HEARING Steely Dan - Do It Again REACTION
One of the best music compositions of the 70ies...... It makes you love life.
@@robinsl27 The Purdie Shuffle!
yeah 'Aja' is one for the time capsule
@@scharlesworth93 Aja and Royal Scam and I'm good on a desert island.
Agreed..........and I was lucky to see them in person as well. First heard them in college in 73 ..........been a fan ever since.
They have a lot of albums. There isn't a boring song on any of them. Enjoy the rabbit hole! It's deep.
@ted ritola ...Preach!
Yess very deep! Steely Dan is a group that seriously addictive to listen to for real!
This song is about addiction...vices....first verse: drugs; second verse: sex; third verse: gambling. Go back, Jack, and do it again.....wheel turning round and round....can’t break the cycle
Did not know that.
@@marlarice go back and listen to the lyrics. Aint not cryptic nonsense, staight drop. No filler. 🍻
Yeah, crazy I’ve heard this song so many times but this is the 1st time I really analyzed the lyrics on a deeper level
There are a lot of other people doing music appreciation videos on RUclips. But, I swear you guys are the best. Keep doing these.
this is music i grew up with in the seventies and eighties. to see you kids grooving to it gives me hope!
Some of the best musicians ever, right there!
There ain’t enough “O”s in smooth to describe Steely Dan. Soooo groovy 🎼🎼🎼🎼
"I just realized he did not say one word for a whole minute" - yep
Just killin it!!!
Haha. That cracked me up. They're called solos, kids. Or guitar breaks. And there were keyboards in there, too. And it was for way more than a minute. But that was a sure sign they were into it. And it was different to them. Fabulous.
It's so much fun watching you both discovering this great music.
Funny as hell
Totally agree, these two guys are priceless ☺
Exactly! This the real music we came up on. When they actually played their own instruments.💙🎶
These guys have stroke. After they reviewd Phil Collins, his record sales shot up. They need to start a business promoting records...... could make bank.
Make these wonderful young men super-famous! Get that fantastic attitude OUT THERE!
@@greendragonpublishing seriously do have exceptional attitude yes totally agree!
💯
I want them to make bank but their innocence is what makes them so extraordinary! I just hope they stay who they are. Willing to experience different sounds with no judgement!
They are already making bank and no one deserves it more these guys are AWESOME
Listen to Chicago's "Twenty-five or six to four."
Truly a must. Make it happen guys!
Yep! I played Alto Sax in our HS band in the mid 70's and we played 25 or 6 to 4:at every football game!
Absolutely!
YES
Face melter fusion jazz is that these guys need!
Hey guys how about you listen to Boz Sacaggs....low down!!! You won’t be disappointed lol

"Reelin' in the Years"
okay, it’s time to hear another one from Steely Dan. How about “Kid Charlamane” (studio version - not live). Larry Carlton’s guitar solos on here are so tasty. Who’s with me on this?
anything steely Dan
No lies in this comment. All truth.

Every Steely Dan song is good
Comment is spot on!
That's Denny Dias playing a Coral electric sitar - an electric guitar that produces a sitar-like sound. It's an outrageously good solo, and the fact that it was played on a Coral sitar just increases the WTF factor. Great choice guys.
Check out Steely Dan's "Black Cow," sampled in dozens of hip hop songs.
Danny Dias' solo blew their minds.
I so love that you love this track, Steely Dan fans are passionate and very cool at the same time..
I love how these two are enjoying some of these old classics!
There are lots of great Steely Dan songs for you guys to check out: "Deacon Blues", "Kid Charlemagne", "Hey Nineteen" to name just a few. They were an outstanding band.
Kid Charlemagne.... "Is there gas in the cahhhrr? Yes there's gas in the caaahhhr...."
Yeah! “Deacon Blues”
"Babylon sisters shake it..."
They still are, minus Walter Becker, RIP.
This music truly is mind-expanding. You kids are giving yourselves a great musical education.
Yep, me walking the street with headphones and the Steely Dan tape in my Walkman 👍
Steely Dan one of the best. Love these old songs. When music was without auto tune. In concert the solos would go on and on. Need to listen to some Santana. Neil Young with crazy horse " Rockin in the free world"
The absolute FUNNIEST reaction video EVER to a great song! The BEST!!!! You guys are great! Love the hat brother! Love this so much!
I luv Steely Dan's music. As an 67 yr. African American grandmother I luv your adventures spirit. You will go far by listening to all music. It opens up your world. I'm surprise this didn't get a million views.
Underrated Steely Dan song you're definitely gonna wanna hear. It's called "Time Out of Mind" I don't see people mentioning it, but it's my favorite Steely Dan tune.

Eh...Babylon Sisters blows.
Steely Dan’s first single was called Dallas and the band themselves called it a stinker. The single bombed and the track was never released on their main LPs. Weird thing is, it’s actually not that bad...
Aw you guys picked a banger! My favorite song from Steely Dan. All their music is off the hook. Love your reaction, classy choice dudes. 💕
Gotta luv❤❣❤ steely dan
You guys are adorable! There is SO MUCH Steely Dan you have to check out...they don't sound like anybody else. Check out the album Aja...masterpiece. it was 2 college friends. And then they would have different amazing studio musicians fill out the rest of the band on all their albums. SO MUCH TO LISTEN TO! Enjoy!
That is one of my favorite albums ever. It really is perfection.
Aja is heaven.
Steely Dan. This was so Popular every where we went you could hear this and if you were in the Club's many of the DJ'S had a way of extending it we would dance for a half hour or more. I'm going to download Steely Dan greatest hit's tonight this will be great for my Exercises.

Steely Dan fans DO NOT own "greatest hits compilations"
we own the entire catalogue and know every song in the correct tracklist.
(well i do anyway)
sad? dont give a fuck,my favourite ever band, and I'm English.
Luv the way you both enjoy the music I've been listening to since the 70's. Make me enjoy them again
Steely Dan is the definition of smooth
The intro on this reminds me of a Carlos Santana song. React suggestion: Santana "Black Magic Woman" and/or "Evil Ways"
Ahhhhhh Yes please, there is nothing like a Santana guitar...
Perfect.
The whole Abraxas album
Love me some Santana
Santana "Open Invitation" is the JAM!!
Soul Sacrifice is a killer track, too!
