Steely Dan was definitely one of the coolest bands ever. You go Jayvee.
My wife hates them because she says they're so sleazy. She says they sound like cocaine.
@@lipby I kinda get that - a lot of the lyrics were a bit dodgy too, especially concerning young women...
The Steely Dan rabbit hole is simply the best.
Yes, it's quite a journey.
Its a long trip indeed but your knowledge will increase greatly.
It’s a deep hole but you will find it enlightening
@@Laura-rm6us
Yes Laura, a very deep hole it is, and one that would make for a delightful journey.
And when you get out of the rabbit hole, go back, Jack, do it again.
Love me some Steely Dan. "And the mourners are all saaangin" as they drag you by your feet, But the hangman isn't hangin' and they put you on the street ..."
"Black Cow" "Deacon Blues" "Hey19" and "FM(no static at all) all Steely Dan tunes you must listen to and react. ;-)
Love love love Steely Dan to the moon and back!! Brilliant band
💖😍💖
This is their best song, in my opinion. It's so distinctive and different from just about anything else they did.
Best by far
I love the fact that you are listening to basically EVERYBODY I grew up listening to! Steely Dan was one of the best studio groups of all time. They strove for perfection in every one of their recordings.
Right JayVee, Steely Dan is Top Shelf with every tune this band delivers. Though they've inspired so many musicians to higher standards, they've likely convinced many others to switch careers because they are so damn far above most of the crowd.
Ain't no bad Steely Dan songs, 'nuff said.
I had the honor of shaking the hand of that guitarist and talking to him for a couple hours.
Agreed
My favorite opening line of any song!
Other Steely Dan songs to check out are: "Josie", "Bodhisattva" "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". Excellent top notch band.
What a beautiful world this would be.
I'd like to second "Josie"... the lyrics are so complex. Would love to see what Jayvee makes of that.
My Old School!
Hey Nineteen
Just checkout the whole Dan catalogue .
O oo o 1972 steely Dan , I had no idea that I would be listening to them in 2020. But I am ,and they still thrill me.
I think I can groove to any Steely Dan song. This one has a Santana vibe to it!
You just can't go wrong with Steely Dan.😊
Please check out
"Reelin' In The Years" 1972 &
"FM" 1978.
Thank you kindly Jay.
He already reacted to Peg and Kid Charlemagne.
@Judi Dipillo
I second those thoughts.
😊👍
that is the first song on the first album of their discography; might as well keep going with Dirty Works; Steely Dan was essentially two guys (Donald Fagan and Walter Becker) and a whole bunch of top notch session musicians' their catalogue is indeed very deep, enjoy the ride !!!!
Steely Dan is so talented! You really can’t go wrong with any choice!
Reminds me of hanging out at the lake on the weekends. Aww man, can I go back for just one day??? Nothin but mellow days, easy nights and Strawberry wine!
Steely Dan has so much great music. Love to see your reaction to "Dirty Work".
That is one of the best songs ever. I love it too.
My brothers in law are both musicians and they have gone to every Steely Dan concert tour. Musicians love Steely Dan.
I'm enjoying watching you enjoy Steely Dan. They are AWESOME. Of course, I've known that for a long time. Great to see another generation of people like yourself, enjoy and appreciate their artistry.
Awesome song! It's an indelible part of the soundtrack of my childhood and beyond. Yep, a very easy song to get lost in, especially for a kid growing up in the 1970's.
Ha ha...whenever I screw something up, my first thought is always 'Go back, Jack....do it again'. Funny how great songs just seep into your brain like that!
The only two permanent members of Steely Dan were Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They only did live shows for their first couple of years and then they became a studio-only band. They worked with a bunch of different studio musicians over the years and the level of musicianship is amazing across all of their songs. Some other great ones to try out are "Deacon Blues", "Peg", "Kid Charlemagne", "Reelin' in the Years", and "Rikki Don't Lose that Number". These are my favorites, but you will get a lot of other recommendations and they will all be good songs.
What about gaucho?
Frikkin love this song! I've known the name Steely Dan all my life, but it wasn't until about 10 years ago, when a friend of mine was playing them at a cookout that I realized how many great songs from my childhood that they're responsible. Although they're not exactly the only band of their ilk, there is a sound and mood that is uniquely Steely Dan. I think Deacon Blues is my fave.
"FM" and "Deacon Blues" should be on your list for sure.
Dirty work
And Aja
Clean...I agree...that's a very good word to describe their music. Steely Dan is perfection! Happy to see younger folks appreciate them. Thank you.
The legendary Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on the solo. Steely Dan were the ultimate song-crafter perfectionists.
Fine choice, fine band. Check out Rikki don't lose that number by Steely Dan, in fact everything they did. You certainly can get lost in their sounds. Try UK band Ace, 'How Long'... another fine outfit.
1972, man...the trip is real. I’m old as fuck and been with them from the very beginning.
You should know that listening to this band is like eating chips...
You won’t stop until someone takes the bag away...
Reelin' in the years, My old school, Peg, Hey 19, deacon blues
Saw them live last summer (minus Walter Becker, RIP) with Keith Carlock on drums. Still OUTSTANDING!
You're right about these guys. They just do everything perfect.
I always wondered what instrument that solo was played on, and finally looked it up. It's an electric sitar, something I didnt know existed.
Edit: they brought in a session musician to play the electric sitar. I can't remember his name. They used a lot of session musicians and vocalists too.
"You went and did it again?!" You're the first person I've seen to react to a Steely Dan song who instantly got the meaning behind the lyrics. Such a great song!
Keep in mind, Steely Dan is really just 2 guys with fantastic studio musicians. Fagen and Becker knew the sound they wanted and stayed in the studio until they got it. A perfect blend of jazz and rock with hints of Middle Eastern and other ethnic vibes. Just a great sound!! So many great songs!!
You got it right, Donald and Walter were perfectionists when it came to production and used only the best studio musicians after this album!
Let's not forget Michael Mcdonald
@Annie Leitch Obviously With Michel though I thought.he was better on his own and they were better and more rockin’, unique before he joined.
A feast for the ears........this song is magic. Then there is the task of understanding the meaning of Donald Fagan’s lyrics.
I discovered this song litterally this last Friday and I can't stop listening to it. So good! I love the voice and the way the chorus is built.
Get yo fill of this band!! Steely Dan brings the fire! The musical talent within this band is just amazing. The instrumentation and the different sounds they produce are AMAZING! You're doing so good w your choices! Keep at it!
This was a great first album.
Steely Dan is just two guys....with an ever-changing array of high caliber studio musicians supporting them.
Two of my brothers were more into Steely Dan than I was though I enjoyed listening to them. I owned very few LP's and only a few singles but the radio kept me going and my family lol. I may forget the names and the titles but I don't forget the music and how it makes me feel. This song is a memory switch like many others and I have to thank you for playing this brilliant recording Jayvee. Take care and stay safe please everyone, love and hugs and Peace Mary-Ellen UK
Reeling in the Years---one of their best.
This tune and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" are my top faves of this band. Delighted that you have such positive reactions to these awesome bands from a different time!
❤❤❤ My favorite song from Steely Dan. All their music is jazzy, funky infused rock. Excellent choice!
Aja, Home at Last, Deacon Blues. Check those out from Steely Dan.
The night that I chase the dragon
Yvonne Graham Time Out of Mind. He needs to react to the entire Gaucho album.
@MICHEAL right
This song reminds me of my dad, he listened to this often in his garage. Great song!!
They have never let me down, always great. music. Thanks for making your RUclips channel. it's my favorite.
So smooth love this song. Rikki don't lose that number is another great tune really good vibe. Just gets you moving to the music love it. Good choice.
Dan is such an excellent group...this song is fire!!!!!!!😎✌️👍
Each album has its own “feel”.... Deacon Blue is a good one to test drive
Listening to this - I feel like I'm back in high school. Fantastic song. ❤
Back to the GROOVY MUSIC OF STEELY DAN...
In really like who mixed this song and definitely top musicians and the layers of so many instruments. One of a kind band. Sounds complicated different than anything recorded in that era. Never gets old
THEY'RE COMPLETELYYYY DIFFERENT FROM ANY CLASSIC ROCK BAND JAY, FOR SURE! :) R.I.P ( PARADISE ) TO THE INCREDIBLE WALTER BECKER :(
My fav is Reelin in the Years by them. Yeah, you can always tell a Steely song...good stuff!
One of my favourites a classic I've listened to it many times always loved it
So many great songs-
Dirty Work
King of the World
Any Major Dude
Rikki Don’t Lose That Number
My Old School
That's a groove.
I have to say, I'm loving your channel! All the best tunes from the old days! Making me happy!!!
The guitarist's are Denny Diaz and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. I could not tell you which one was the better, they are both dynamite. You want to read about an interesting character? Look up Skunk's page in Wikipedia.
I did check Wikipedia. You weren't kiding!
Oh my are you serious? Looked him up and woah!!!!
@@ginnywhat5777 Weird, right?
Just don't forget that Jeff also played with the Doobie Brothers.
Swaggin' groove! Love how you tap right into all the music you do. I can tell you know your music! You really got it bro!👍🎧
They were notorious perfectionists. So much so they deliberately added a little inperfectiom to make it seem a jam session. Listen the keyboard solo.
Almost impossible to go wrong with Steely Dan. Check out 'The Royal Scam' and 'Night by Night'.
Thanks Jayvee...great stuff
Royal Scam is my fav SD album
A song about addictions? Crime, bad women, gambling? Just can't stay away from them. Do it again...
I never knew what this song was about.
Glad you like Steely Dan. . .
Good to hear people getting turned on to their music. .
I've had the pleasure of listening to their stuff for 48 years. . And I still love it every time I hear it. . never grows old or stale. .
The intro sets up the vibe for the rest of the song. ❤
Was jiving to Steely Dan just now on vinyl.
one of the best coolest bands, enjoy...
My Fav Album by Steely Dan!! "Dirty Work" and "Fire In The Hole" two great songs that people seem to forget!!
Ive been a Steely Dan fan for years and years , glad you guys are finally catching up.
Look up a little about them. Every album was different people to fit the specific sound the 2 main guys wanted to create. That is why it is so spot on, because they crafted it to be exact.
This song is SMOOOOOTH!
J, so many Steely Dan essentials... I envy you hearing them for the first time.
Steely Dan wooooow memories!
That entire album. 'Can't Buy a Thrill' is filled with great songs. Only 3 radio hits, but even the B sides were spectacular music. Their musicianship, writing, and production were the best!
Midnight cruiser on the same album- my favorite but gets no love
The late 60’s and early seventies were so good because the world, musically, synchronized. Follow the history of music in the US and you will see bands imitating sounds of the world, but nothing is combined yet. Steely Dan really touched on so many styles in their compositions
Steely Dan rocked our lives for decades
one of my absolute favorites of Steely Dan.
Rhythm guitar becomes a solo guitar and back again. Genius jazz/blues riffs.
The only example of an electric sitar in rock music. Mind bending.
Darn right! These guys are the best jazz rock EVER!
So nice to see a young man enjoying the music that I would torture my friends with in the early 1980s.
Another GREAT song off this album is "Fire In The Hole."
Love these tune, sing on kareoke bar even though they are two vocalist. . love it !!
Steely Dan is unparalleled; tight musicians always at the top of their game. They had that 70s California sound.
I bought the 45 of this song at the record store when it came out when I was a kid.
when i was growing up in the 70's, this band was so overlooked by everyone, we knew their songs but there were sooo many great bands that they were just third rate, but reflecting back now, they deserved more credit. unfortunately , except for the album peg, they sold very few albums, more of an underground thing.
They sold more than 40 million records.
Another great song, love it
A couple of suggestions for future reactions : Het 19 , FM , Josie.
"Deacon Blues!" "Hey Nineteen" - Please. "The Cuervo Gold...……."
U can't go wrong with this band amazing music 🍺🔥💯
Steely Dan and Gerry Rafferty, part of my childhood ❤️
Can't believe many people on this planet haven't heard of this song.
Babylon Sisters. Learn what the “hi-hat” drum beat is all about first. The drumming on this song will blow you away. Same rift is on Led Zepplin’s “Fool in the Rain” and Toto’s “Rosana”. Both worth a listen. Bernard Purdie invented it. It was initially known as the “Purdie Shuffle”.
Love me some Steely Dan! Keep up the awesome job brother 😀
Your comments were spot on for this song.
Back when they were making their albums, they could take a year to make an album. They wanted each album to be perfect. Steely Dan consisted of 2 members. the rest were very talented studio musicians.
Soulfull layered sound of the STeeellllies
